The server running www.bink.nu (Windows Server 2003, IIS6,
ASP.NET 1.1) has been working perfectly for the last 2
months+ with no change. Last night, the site showed the
dreaded "Service Unavailable" error. When I went on the
server, we had three messages in the event log:

And every time we try to start the WWW Service, we get
those errors. We've tried uninstalling IIS, and deleting
the metabase file, and then reinstalling, but we still get
that error.

Anyone have any sugestions?

Do you have 'Enable direct metabase edit' option turned on? It's a long
shot, but it may seem it could have sth to do with it, at least that message.

That didn't fix it :-/. Direct Edit was disabled, I
enabled it, and the WWW Service did not start. (I have
now unchecked it.)

The wierd thing is, FTP is running fine - just WWW is
broken.

We really want to avoid formatting this box, so any
suggestions?

If the IISADMIN service will not start, this points to corrupted METABASE.
If the IISAMIN will start but the W3SVC will not start this points to
missing METABASE information. IIS automatically backs up the METABASE xml
file and the xml schema and stores them in "system32\inetsvr\history" folder
in a numbered order. You can also do manuel backups which are kept in the
"system32\inetsvr\metaback folder. There is also the Inital METABASE backup
here from when you first installed IIS.
In the "system32\inetsvr folder is the files for IIS like inetinfo.exe
along with the working MEATBASE xml and schema. If IISADMIN will not start
you can rename the working METABASE.xml and MBschema.xml and copy and rename
a backup pair from "system32\inetsvr\history" folder.
If IISADMIN is running, then from IIS manager you can right click on
machinename(Local Computer) under ALL TASKS choose BACKUP/RESTORE
CONFIGURATION and select a previous copy.

We've reinstalled IIS several times already - the metabase
isn't the problem, its a default install now with no changes.

So, you're saying that you reinstalled IIS6, made sure that the inetsrv
directory is completely deleted between installations, and it's now not
working after installation?

Then, I would look at %SYSTEMROOT%\iis6.log for any setup errors. If there
are no setup errors, then I would look at the event log messages.

I think your original problem could have been solved by restoring a backup
metabase while you tracked down what caused the issue (I think you may have
had anti-virus or backup software that somehow locked up the metabase.xml,
preventing IIS from writing to it, and causing some sort of corruption --
and just restoring the backup metabase file would have been sufficient).

Gino's assessment is correct -- if IISADMIN service is able to start, you
have a metabase but just insufficient information for W3SVC -- especially
since you said FTP, which also has configuration in the metabase, is still
functioning. Since metabase.xml is a text file, you can look into it to
make sure that the W3SVC and W3SVC/1 nodes exist and are well formed.

Also, the error about being unable to place change notifications on a file
make me suspect that you have some other process running on the server that
is preventing IIS from functioning, no matter how many times you
reinstall -- you'll have to find that culprit.

Unfortunatly there are no backup files in history folder before the issue
started, there is a backup file in the inetserv\backup folder but don't know
how to restore that.

We can conclude that metabase is OK, IISadmin, smtp and FTP runs fine, I ave
run Mcafee stinger to detect trojans running but it found nothing.
3rd party tools are uninstalled: Perl, AWstats.
URLscan 2.5 is uninstalled.
No other service is trying to listen to port 80.

When trying to start WWW in services, the following error appears:

Windows could not start the World Wide Web Publishing Service on Local
Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a
non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to
service-specific error code -2147467262.

and the eventlog messages mentioned in 1st post of this thread..

Last thing I remember that I did before the issue started, I upgraded MBSA
1.1 to 1.2.
Then I ran the security analyzer and set it to scan local machine, it seemed
to hang after that. I kept it running hoping it would go on, then I forgot
all about it (afteral it was weekend) that night the probems started.

I hope this extra information gives someone an idea what might be the issue.

Thanks for your time,

Steven Bink

1. Please check whether the nodes "W3SVC" and "W3SVC/1" exist in your
current metabase.xml.

2. Also, on the commandline, run:
CSCRIPT %SYSTEMDRIVE%\inetpub\adminscripts\adsutil.vbs enum w3svc/1/root

Please report what happens.

Re: IIS6 Fails To Start - WWW Service Error out of no where by Dev

Tekmaven,

If your server is crashing or hanging you might want to
download our ReJuvin8 tool. It's free for the first
15-days. It can keep your site running despite problems.

It's designed to detect problems then restart or reboot.
It can restart ANY programs, services, or processes in
precise order. It doesn't fix bugs but it does give you some
breathing room while you are finding them. ReJuvin8 also
gives you email and telephone alert messages and graphic
status reports. It runs as a Windows Service.

It can also test, alert, and report on URLs running anywhere
on any server on your net connection. So if you use multiple
servers you can use them to watch each other, too.

ReJuvin8 has both an automatic and a custom mode. In the
auto mode you make all the settings by pointing and
clicking. This will handle most applications.

The custom mode uses heartbeat synch files to get absolute
detection that key processes are working. Tools and
instructions are provided to help you do this. We also offer
customization as a contract service.

Charles
