Win Server 2003 -- IIS Problem
Hi IIS gurus,
I'm trying to learn ASP.NET, so I installed Windows 2003 Server. Visual
studio.NET is installed on a new workstation.
The ASP.NET book I'm working from goes through setting up a virtual
directory and adding a subweb. It actually describes how to do it on a
workstation, but I figured it would be the same on a server. I can
successfully create a virtual directory, but I don't seem to be able to
create a subweb. I'm trying to do this on the server so I can access it from
any workstation.
According to the book, I right-click on the Default Website, select New -->
Server Extensions 2002 Web. (Funny, I thought I was using 2003.) Anyway, I
get prompted to login, which I do as domain admin, give it a password, and
bingo, the [Create a Subweb] page appears. I enter the name of the subweb
(the same name as the virtual directory), and am prompted to login again. I
do this using the domain admin account (as before), but it will not accept
the login, saying I don't have sufficient permissions.
Frontpage 2002 Server Extensions are installed, but I am not able to check
them. On the [Check Server Health] page (which I logged into using the
domain admin account), I tick all the checkboxes to test and repair, click
OK... and nothing happens.
Recalculating the web seems to complete OK.
Any help you can offer will be gratefully accepted. :-)

Scheduled tasks
Hi there,
My web app needs to run a schduled task - every hour it
needs to scan the DB, find any updates and - if there are
updates - send an email to an address list, notifyling
them of the change.
I know how to scan the DB for chnages, how to send and
SMTP mail to an address list, and how to set this mail up
such that it gives a simple link to the appropriate place
in the web app - the only thing I lack experience in is
setting up scheduled apps. This would have to be done on
the server (Windows 2000).
I am posting thios question to both the distributed apps
and the servers newsgroups, as it may be appropriate for
either.

NT AUTHORITY/NETWORK SERVICE missing from IIS_WPG
I have a fresh installation of Server 2003 as a Domain Controller,
SharePoint, and Unix Services for Windows 3.5. I tried to install a .NET/DB
application and received the common error that "Logon failed for NT
AUTHORITY/NETWORK SERVICE." Typically when I receive this error I simply add
IIS_WPG to SQL's logins and all is well. However, this time it didn't work.
Upon further investigation, I noticed that NETWORK SERVICE (and the other NT
AUTHORITY accounts) were missing from IIS_WPG. When I tried to re-add the
NETWORK SERVICE user as a member of the IIS_WPG group, I was not given the
option of adding an object of type "Built-in Security Principals" so the
object was not found. I'm not exactly sure how NETWORK SERVICES got removed
from IIS_WPG in the first place, but now that it's gone, how do I add it
back if I can't get to it?

ASP Pages no longer load
ASP pages worked on an 2000 Professional computer running IIS 5. I loaded some security updates and now I can load html pages that call ASP pages but when I try to load an ASP page directly (stored in the same directory) it cannot find it. The browser just seems to be searching for it. Further more after trying to load an ASP page directly, the html page that calls the asp page that worked before will not run anymore. The only way I have found to "reset" it is to reboot the computer. Does anyone know what is going on

IIS 6.0 ASP pages run very slow
I am having trouble with our custom web application. We
just upgraded to window 2003 and have seen a decrease in
performance running the web off of this server. It is
not consistent though, because XP users and some W2K
users have not seen a decrease in performance. All W2K
users are running SP3 and have the latest version of IE.
I have seen in some instances where adding the Qos Packet
Scheduler service to the local area connection did bring
the slow clients up to speed, but for others it did
nothing. I also looked into the buffering issue, and
when buffering was turned on it did help, but due to our
code this is not an option. I would really like to know
what the real issue is here, because if it is buffering,
why are there still mixed OS clients still running the
App at normal speed. I would appreciate any info or
tips....thanks Tag: Change IIS Instance ID Using WMI Tag: 323438

IIS 5 - Timeout Setting questions and problem
I have a question about 2 setting in the Internet Services Manager for IIS
5.
In the properties on the default website, on the WebSite tab. There is a
section called Connections with a Connection Timeout value of 900 seconds.
On the Home Directory Tab, in the Application Settings section, when you
click on Configuration, then Options Tab. There is an Enble Session State,
that is checked with a Session Timeout of 20 Minutes.
First question is what is the difference between the connection timeout and
the session timeout for the application settings?
Second, using basic authentication, if a user logs into a site, and sits
idle, no activity between IIS and the users browser, for a time longer then
the timeout values, shouldn't they be prompted to relogin to the site?

how to pass parameters to iisext containing quotes (W2003)?
I am doing the following on a Windows 2003 server.
I am trying to set up a web service extension through the use of
iisext.vbs. I need to add the following as a new extension:
c:\programs\python23\python.exe "%s"
Please note the quotes around %s.
To do this I tried the following (on one line):
cscript.exe %systemroot%\system32\iisext.vbs
"c:\programs\python23\python.exe ""%s""" 1 PythonScript 1 PythonScript
It executes fine but the quotes get stripped off so the net result is
that I get ...\python.exe %s
which does not work.
How can I make sure that the quotes stay in place when I execute the
script?

How to enable a web application using CGI on IIS6 & W2003?
I am trying to get an application running on IIS6 on a new Windows
2003 server. The application is a web viewer of a software versioning
system repository (CVS). The viewer is named ViewCvs and is programmed
via CGI using Python as the scripting language.
I have been successful in automating the install on IIS4 and IIS5 on
all previous NT class operating systems. But when I run the
installation on IIS6/W2003 and then try to access the application it
gives me a 404 error.
I have checked that the Virtual Directory gets created successfully
and that all settings that were needed for IIS5 are also there now.
But still the access is denied.
I have been pointed towards the Web Service Extensions setup, but I
have two problems here:
1) In the IIS Manager page for Web Service Extensions I don't
understand what to really do... I cannot relate to the terminology.
What is a WSE in the first place? The 3 letters 'CGI' or what?
2) I must do the setup programmatically so I have been adviced to use
iisext.vbs to do this. But when I try to follow the online guide I get
caught by the terminology again. :-(
Can someone please help me by advicing which calls to iisext.vbs I
should make to enable the web server to allow access to the cgi file?
The virtual directory named viewcvs is created at:
C:\Programs\ViewCvs\VDIR
The application that runs the viewcvs.cgi file is located here:
C:\Programs\Python23\Python.exe
This is all in the virtual directory properties and look fine to me...

Problems to see "Default Web Site" with a user who's not "Local administrtator"...
Hi,
I had install IIS 5.1. If I work with a user who's "local administrator" I
see the "Default Web Site" in IIS console and I can modify properties.
I create a second user with the "read, write and execute" privileges in the
wwwroot. But It was not a "local administrator". But it's an Operator of the
Web Site and it's in the "administrator group" who can create en manage web
site . When I log a session with this user, I can't see the "Default Web
Site" in IIS?!?!?
With the same config in Windows 2000 and IIS 5.0, I can see the "Default Web
Site" with my user without "local administrator" privilege.
Do you know the difference between these two different setup and why I have
a problems in Windows XP? The security rules had change in Windows XP versus
2000?

Order of Logged Options
I'm currently using AWStats (www.awstats.org) to analyze our logs and
report. We recently upgraded to Windows Server 2003 (and obviously IIS6) and
I noticed that while the same logging options are selected, the order of
those options has changed! In fact, it doesn't even match the order of
columns shown in the W3C log properties.
What has this changed? Is there some way I can change the order, perhaps by
modifying the metabase or hacking the registry? It's important that this
gets changed because AWStats expects a certain order and, unfortunately,
doesn't include a custom format option for the cs-method logging option (at
least by itself, since it has moved positions).

How do you.. ?
I've been tasked with modifying our company's web site (just simple

I've got ftp access so I can just download the file, modify it and then
upload it.
As I am a beginner, I was wondering how the pros would achieve the
following:
Download all the files which make up the web site (which is easily done).
The challenge is, how would I go about setting up the site LOCALLY so that I
can make changes and view them without interfering with the LIVE version
until I am ready to upload the changed files again. The 'local' site should
behave like the 'live' site as much as possible.
I have viewed the source to a few of the HTML files and it looks like it
refers to external web links and data quite a bit.

Win2K/IIS 100% CPU utilisation requires reboot
Folks,
I have a Win2K server running IIS with all SPs and Windows updates. The
server is not under any significant load and is mainly used for local file
and print sharing for about 6 users, plus it runs a simple Intranet and a
perl script that provides a web-fronted test engine for online exams.
The server runs fine except that perhaps 3-4 times a month the inetsrv
process will shoot to 100%, file and print sharing services stall and the
only way to calm it down is to reboot the server. This generally happens
when someone's running the perl script to do a test or do some test admin.
I have done some basic research on this and spent a small amount of time to
try and identify the root cause of the problem but as an interim measure, I
moved the script to a Linux server running Apache where it's run fine for 3
months with no downtime and no problems.
Since the Linux server is 'doing the job' fine I've not spent much time
'fixing' the Win2K server but I'd be interested in knowing whether anyone
has any specific advice that might result in a near-instant fix!? Trouble
is, since the testing engine's stable where it is, there's no incentive to
spend any significant time debugging the Win2K side of things at any
significant level.
Any takers?
Thanks

IIS and Frontpage
I have a 2k server with IIS 6.0 and 2002 FP server
extensions installed. It contains one site with a sub-
web. We can edit the main site fine with no issues, but
editing the subweb site causes problems. We are using
Frontpage (problem occurs with FP 2000 and 2002). The
page looks fine, until you open it in Frontpage. It then
changes structure (it breaks the page up into frames,
removes the heading, etc). You don't even have to save
the page; just openning it screws it all up. I tried
removing IIS -- no help. ANY IDEAS?? Tag: Change IIS Instance ID Using WMI Tag: 323262
Is there a way to change the Instance ID of a website using WMI. It is no
problem using ADSI's "movehere" command but how do
I do it using WMI?
