    - IIS6 Website stops responding - App pool problem? Scenario: ====== One of our online applicaiton website that runs 9 to 12 virtual directories and share a common application pool. The applications (within the Virt.directories) are ASP and ASP.Net based and they share sessions. Sessions not stored outside. Now, we moved this webserver to production couple of weeks ago, after testing. One thing that wasnt tested though is load testing. The online applications get 3000 hits per day, in total. App pool settings: =========== We had left default settings as is initially, except that we had setup specific identity to run the pool. However, we have changed the settings a bit as follows: Settings for the app pool: Assume what is not mentioned to be OFF Recycle worker process(in minutes):3740 Recycle worker processes at 2:00AM everyday Shutdown worker processes after being idle for: 20 min Limit Kernel request queue: 20000 (number of requests) Max. number of worker processes: 1 (web garden) Enable Pinging: every 30 seconds Enable rapid fail protection: failures- 5; Time period -5 Startup time limit: 90 seconds Shutdown time limit: 90 seconds Problem: ====== The website stops reponding suddenly at some times. It happened 3 times during last 2 weeks period. We had to recycle the app pool and immediately it would come back up. Then we made some adjustments to the app pool config from defaults to the above mentioned and still not great improvements. Event log reports ID: 1013 Source:W3SVC Description: A process serving applicaton pool 'xyz' exceeded time limits during shutdown. Process id was 'xxxx' (xyz is the applicaiton that we are talking about ) Same Applicaiton used to run just fine while it was hosted in IIS5 for nearly 4 years. Questions: 1. What configuration setting is needed in the app pool to make this work fine. We are ok with recycling it in the mid night 2. I am also concerned about the sessions being lost (but its a different issue) 3.     - Virtual directory on non-default web site I've a w2k with iis5. I had a application running on the default web site. I install a new web site running in other port, only for tests. I disable the default web site and change the porta of my other site to 80. Then I'm able to use this site. In the Internet Information server configuration, I change the default web site to my new site. Then, I deleted the default Web Site. Now, I'm having some problems. I couldn't create any automatic virtual directory. For example, when I try to install a application made in asp.net the virtual directory is not created. Anyone can help-me?     - xp pro sp2 iis issue Hi all, I just recently installed Virtual Server 2005 on my XP Pro SP2 machine which has IIS on it. VirtSvr05 installs a virtual directory with scripts & executables permissions and windows integrated authentication. The problem is everytime I try to launch the web admin tool for it, I get a 404 error.     - About client autentication with smart card on iis 6.0 Hi, i have one server with windows 2003 and iis6.0 that have a website that for the directory /x509 use a smart card to authenticate a client and it's' work. I have configured another server with windows 2003 and iis 6.0 for make the same authentication with smart card for the directory /test but not work and when i type http://myserver/test a windows show but show nothing certificate. If i type the same http://myserver/x509 that work and a window for select a certificate show. I have select also for the directory test > tab "directory security" > Secure communication > "require client certificates" but not work , ho certifacte for select showed.     - Metabase.xml self pruning? IBIS has a value, AspMaxRequestEntityAllowed=204800 as a default. We definitely want to allow larger files and do not want this limit to apply at all. We control the uploads programmatically. A few days ago I changed AspMaxRequestEntityAllowed to 80 Mb. Today that line was missing from metabase.xml. Since then I have mad numerous changes through MMC such as adding virtual directories, but nothing that should have modified this. Yesterday I also rebooted the server. This morning I copied the AspMaxRequestEntityAllowed line back and set the value to 71680000. Is there some kind of an absolute limit? Can I expect this value to stick?     - Geting physical path of IIS directories Hi, Im trying to get programmaticly the physical path of each directory displayed on IIS Console. If the SchemaClassName is "IIsWebVirtualDir" then I can get it (i.e.: "C:\..."). Trying with the "IIsWebDirectory" schema, I get a url like follows: IIS://DAGOSERVER/w3svc/1/ROOT/DagoSite and not the common physical path like "C:\...". If I put both on the browser, they run well.     - ASP not working Hi, ASP.NET doesn't allow me to load old projects or create new ones. It just happened one day & has been like this since. It's killing me. - I've run the utility to reinstall ASP with no luck. ( with /i switch) - I removed both framework 1.1 & visual studio & reinstalled in corect order - I checked that IIS works by browsing a simple ASP file from a virtual directory in IIS without problems. but still receive this message: "Visual studio.net has detected that the specified web server is not running ASP.NET 1.1. You will be unable to run ASP.NET web applications or services" As stated above, I am running framwork 1.1. Is there a seperate ASP.NET 1.1 that I should be aware of?     - Usage Analysis Hello, I am having problems trying to turn on Usage Analysis on an IIS6 frontpage extension 2002 web server. Most instructions like this one: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010563991033.aspx claims that you can go to 'Site Administration' and be able to change usage analysis settings. Other documents also say that you have to enable logging in W3C Extended Log File Format under the website properties. I have check 'Enable Logging' and made sure frontpage is extended but am not able to enable or see 'Change Usage Analysis' setting under 'Site Administration'. I also checked the roles and made sure I have rights to manage usage analysis (administrator). I have search here and also on the internet but have not found any solution to this. Can anyone help?     - Post string exceeding 158 kb = error Hi Running IIS 6, Windows Server 2003 (standard ed). I'm using a form (method post) to send data to our web server. As long as the posted string is less then 158000 bytes long everything works fine. As soon as the string exceeds 158000 bytes I get a "The page cannot be displayed" error. I've tried to break up the string in several smaller pieces (as suggested by Microsoft in article Q273482) with no luck. Any help is deeply appreciated. Following KB299525 I should be able to select Web Server for the type of certificate but I can only select User. I removed the CA server and reinstalled everything, but nothing changes.     - IIS 6.0 Configuration Problems Hi, We are facing a problem with our Web Server running Internet Information Server 6.0 (IIS 6.0) configured on a Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition with Service Pack 1 and all Critical Patches. We are able to access this web server from all the clients inside our Network. We assigned a Public IP Address (Which we got it from our ISP) to access this Web Server from Outside World. But from outside network (Public Network) we are not able to access this Web Server, giving a time out Error. To check the possibility of firewall configuration problem, we configured the same public IP to an other webserver running Windows 2000 Server with IIS 5.0 and it is working fine.     - Generate a dump file for IIS 6.0 Hi, I am trying to create a dump file to inspect a process before it is recycled and the process terminated and have followed the instructions to the letter as per Microsoft KB article 828222 (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=828222). I have given the Network Service and even the Everyone group full access to the batch file created and am now receiving the following eventlog message. "A process serving application pool 'DefaultAppPool' was orphaned but the specified orphan action "iisdebugbatch.bat" %8196% could not be executed. The data field contains the error number."     - session timeot I have session.timout set to all day(1440 minutes). But if my application has been idle more than 1 hour for example, my usser losts the session. So, I checked the IIS properties. I found the DefaultAppPool idle timeout property, which was set to shout down the worker procces after beiing idle for 20 minutes. Should I set this property to 1440 minutes? Does it has something to do with session? And there is some other property: health - shuth down the worker process after 90 minutes.     - SMTP Monitor Software ? We currently have a number of application servers that send mail out to opt-in email lists for clients. All email is sent through a server running IIS 5.0 SMTP service.     - IIS screwed up totally... how do I fix this. I have a nachine with Win2k sp4 server, it's running IIS. Well was running IIS; it is not a web server so i used it for testing a long time ago. I decided to do it again, but there's a problem. IIS is not working. Localhost isn't responding via hhtp; when I try to launch IIS admin, I get "System cannot find a path specified" when I try to ocnnect to the server to manage it. When I shut down and restert IIS Admin and Web Publishing services, an error appears in event log: Unable to query the W3SVC (HTTP) service performance data. The error code returned by the service is data DWORD 0. I ma not sure if this error is related to the problem cause its descriptions on MS site and forums are irrelevant...     - Migrating Newsgroups to another server Apologies in advance if this question has been asked before, but my search has left me high and dry. I am attempting to migrate some newsgroups from a Windows 2000 server running IIS 5 to a Windows 2003 server running IIS 6. So far, on the new server, I recreated all of the newsgroups. Last night, I shut off the news servers on both servers, and copied the contents of each newsgroup directory found in inetpub\nntpfile\root from the old server to the new server. When everything came up, I found my newsreader saw all the messages as expired, and would not allow me to post a new message. At this point, I've reverted back to the Windows 2000 server, but I need to have this service migrated within the next week as the Windows 2000 server will be disappearing. My desired result would be that when I do this migration, that there would be no difference to any of the users that use the server, however, if necessary, I am willing to give them advance notice that they may need to reset their newsreaders (we've had to do this before).     - Mime Types in IIS 6.0 I though that if there wasn't a MINE type specified Globaly or locally in the ISM the user would get a 404.3. I can't get this to work with .mpg files. I remove the Mime type and the user gets a dialog box to either save or open the file, along with a 200 code in the logs. I recyled the App Pool and WWW Service just in case.     - IIS 6 and ASP pages HI I'm having a weird issue. I checked in Web service extensions to enable ASP. When I go to my site via www.sitename.com I get the page that's serviced by default.asp fine. Now, if I specify www.sitename.com/default.asp I get a page that says The system cannot find the file specified. And any other ASP pages that I specify gives me that error.     - Authentication Problem in IIS6 Hi I have an application hosted in IIS6, Win2003 server. It is supposed to work as an extension to MSCRM. Both MSCRM application and my app is set to the same application pool. Windows authentication is used to login. The user should log in to crm using window authentication and then should able to access my custom pages. The problem is when i login into mscrm using windows authentication, i can access all the links related to crm. But the moment i click on the link to my custom pages, it asks for windows authentication again. I dont know why this happens. Previously this application was deployed in IIS5 and it worked fine. Once logged in it wouldnt ask for login till the browser is closed. I tried various things like syncing time of the Webserver with DC, since someone had suggested that this might be cause, due to kerberos issue. But did not workout. Anyone any clue how this can be solved, so that as soon i as log into to the first app it does not ask again for authentication clicking to the second link.     - Content from Inherited dll Not Appearing in ASP.NET Site Under IIS6 I have recently migrated from IIS5 to IIS6, and am having a few problems setting up a number of ASP.Net sites. All static sites, and most ASP.Net are working fine, but there are a few which are not, each of which have something particular in common, which is that they all have their main content generated by an external compiled dll. In other words, I have a compiled dll which has in it base page classes from which the client application's pages inherit, providing general markup for such as a page header, menu, footer etc. The inherited pages define their own content, which is then combined at runtimw with that of the base page. Under IIS5 this was working fine, however under IIS6 none of the content which is generated by the base classes is rendered to the page - only the markup explicitely declared in the child, inherited pages is shown. No errors are shown (permissions, file access etc.), the content is just missing. Is there anything I need to know about inheriting from external dlls in this way in IIS6, or are there any general dll restrictions that need removing? Any help would be gratefully received.     - Two replicated websites I used to have only one Windows 2000 + IIS server in my intranet with lots of ISAPI and ASP applications. As my LAN grew up, I bougth two W2k3 + IIS servers. The idea is keep this two websites replicated. I installed Network Load Balancing and my questions are about replication. When I have to updated them I guess I'll need to: 1) Drainstop SERVER A (NLB command to finish current actitives and stop working), so B will handle all new traffic. When A it's ready, update web server files, obviously unloading all ISAPI applications first. When I'm done start it again 2) Drainstop SERVER B. A receives all new connections with its updated files. Update servers files in B. Start it again. So, my questions: a) Is it correct the way I'm supposed to handle replication? b) Is there any application to help me automate this tasks?     - IIS6 not logging Authenticated Usernames Hi, A part of our website is password protected. People need to create accounts in order to gain access to the secured website. The username is email. After the user logs in a session cookie is created. On each secured page a check is made for session cookie. If this session cookie exists then a user is allowed to view secured page, if not they are redirected to login page. In IIS 6, I checked â??extended propertiesâ?? of W3C Extension Log File Format and noticed that all the fields have been selected (including cs-username), but when I look at the log files I see this field showing dashes (-) meaning IIS 6 is not login usernames.     - Port blocking senario I have a web server(webcam server) running on my home network. I would like to be able to view webcam from at work. My service provider blocks port 80 inbound.     - IIS 6.0 - Enabling printing I have set up an Intranet based application(written in ASP) on Server1, using IIS 6.0 as its web server. The application needs to use the organisations printers to print reports. All of the printers are attached to a print server. I added the printers to Server1 and attached to the application.     - Setting up a secure site Hi, I need to setup a secure site. I checked with some CAs and they told me that the certificate would apply to a whole site, but what I am interested in doing is securing only a section of the server. I checked on MS Tech Net and found how to create new sites. I think I can only have it by either a distinct ip address/port combination or by name. What I would like to have is this: http://www.mydomain.com https://www.mydomain.com My question is. If I issue a certificate for www.mydomain.com, will that give me the result I want? or will I end up with my entire site secure (ie I can only use https://www.mydomain.com)?     - COM+ Crashes Hi, I have an application running in production on Windows 2003 Server and SQL Server 2000 (clustered). The app server is hosting my COM+ dll which is being called by ASP 3 pages. Its an Intranet application. What happens is: suddenly users get themselves out of the system and unable to get back because it throws the error: "Connection cannot be used to perform this operation. It is either closed or Invalid in this context". Now this error occurs when you try to use the database connection which is closed. And if the connection is closed, even then it should not be closed for all the users and even for new requests it should issue open a connection if its closed. Its not frequent error and happens twice this month in 15 days. The only solution to this problem is going to COM+ Applications and shutdown then Restart the dll. As its a production server so its not easy to repeat the process. I have reviewed the event logs and nothing suspisous has been found except everytime first Secli Surity Policy applied event is found and after that application stops bahaving in this fashion.     - Content-disposition: attachment header in IIS6 not working with IE6 Hi We've got an ASP.NET application which writes file output directly to the Response stream. It uses the content-disposition attachment header to force the browser to display a "Save/Open" dialog for known mime-types. When running in IIS5 on Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP Professional (i.e. our development PCs) and using IE6 this works fine. When deployed to a Windows 2003 server running IIS6, and accessing the page using IE6, it all goes wrong. Instead of the specified filename, the name of the aspx page is given, along with all the usual warnings about script etc. (Accessing the page with Mozilla Firefox works fine.) I created a test application which reproduces this behaviour, and noticed something even stranger: when I open a new browser window and enter the URL, I get the bug behaviour. If I click cancel, and then press enter to load the page again, it works fine.     - CGI Problem on MS IIS 5.0 - Trying to access files on other machines Greetings, I'm working on a CGI program that will run under MS IIS 5.0 and will browse folders on three other machines, building HTML pages that will provide links to these folders. Essentially, the CGI will connect to each machine in turn, doing the FindFirst/FindNext process based on the current criteria. It will select certain files/folders, and build an HTML page as it goes. The premise is fine. If I run the program from the command line, it seems to work fine and I get my HTML code out. I can copy the code into a separate file, open it in the browser, and all appears right with the world. However, when I try to run the CGI from the browser itself, I get all kinds of problems. The first one I got was a 1312, "A specified logon session does not exist. It may have already been terminated." After doing some searching, I began to investigate impersonation of a logged on user. but I don't have the IIS icon in Administrative Tools nor can I run iis.msc

First off - Windows XP Pro has IIS 5.1 and not 6.0 which is only available
on Windows 2003 Server

If you are missing this shortcut then I can only assume it was deleted.

You can create a new MMC file for IIS.

Type "mmc" into the Start-Run dialog.

On the file menu select "Add/Remove snapin"
Click Add
Select "Internet Information Services"
Click Add
Click Close
Click Ok
Click File-Save

Give it a Name such as "Internet Information Services"
