Newbie Question - DOCRoot
Hi
I come from a unix background of web services and now I'm working with an IIS box. The site that is being administered is compiled of ASP pages with COM components on another server. A web user navigates to the index.asp page. This page is compiled and then creates an HTML string that is sent to the web user's browser. I want to know where is that HTML string stored. In Memory, or on the server in a location.
in unix, it would be stored in the DOCROOT.
The reason I ask is because I want to be able to cache many pages on my site. Since most pages are updated only twice daily, there is no need to process the ASP page every single time a web user navigates to that page

REmote access from web to internal site
Hi,
New to 2003 SBS and IIS. I have installed SBS and IIS. I
have a software firewall (WinProxy) on another machine
that is port forwarding any inbound port 8080 request to
port 80 on the SBS. I use NO-IP.com redirecting port 80 to
8080 of the home firewall computer. When I browse to the
NO-IP URL I see the default web of the SBS no problem.
When I try to select/connect to "My Company's Internal Web
Site. The URL becomes http://coompanyweb and fails
with "The page cannot be displayed". This is the same for
Remote Web Workplace too. I have given myself anonymous
access in the permissions. I have a book on IIS 6, but
alas it's the pits. Any general/specific help would
greatly appreciated. Book suggestions, etc. I just want
expose my company files to the internet and I have been
completely stymied for about three weeks.

Updating to IIS 6 (Windows 2003)
Hi,
I have a large IIS application (ASP)
It is written in a combination of ASP (old, not ASP.NET) Javascript,
VBScript (Some client side, some server side) and VB DLLS.
It is all based on an SQL Database
What kind of incompatibilities will it have with IIS 6.0
I realise this is a big question and that I'm not supplying all the
data, but, I would be glad for any quick pointers, or where I can find
specific info.
Does IIS 6.0 support old ASP, or does it only support it in the IIS 5
compatibility mode?
I use ASP/IIS session to manage user information, is this behaviour
affected?
I would like to avoid working in comaptibility mode, is that at all
possible without completly re-writing my code to be ASP.NET?
Thanks

Pricing Confusion.
In general, what are CAL's and how do they work
How does this relate to client licenses for SQL Server, if at all
The explanation on the Microsoft site is a bit confusing. Want unlimited outside internet traffic to hit on regular and also secure website. Assume all on one machine for now
Also may want at least 10 users to be able to administratively edit an SQL Server simultaneously. These users would update from outside as well utilizing middleware calls to SQL Server perhaps, so I don't think additional client licenses would be necessary for SQL Server in this instance
Can someone tell me the cost of such a setup in more general terms. Maybe direct me to current simple setup flowcharts that demonstrate costs. Or perhaps just in simple terms based upon the above
Apologies for the questions, but just curious about the costs. Tag: Cannot find IIS 6.0 on the microsoft website Tag: 322194

Remote Hosting?
I am self-hosting a small website. My setup is:

Windows XP Pro w/Service Pack 1

I am Using FrontPage2003- and I am currently publishing
the web site http://localhost
I would like to get the webpage published to another drive
on my computer - Drive H. This is a parition on my master
hard drive.
I have spent some time in the FP Users Group and I set up
a subweb, called gradyweb, under the default web. And in
the subweb, I set the Home Directory to either
H:\gradyweb, or http://localhost/gradyweb. In neither case
does FP accept the path as a valid remote directory. I get
an error message: You can not convert a

So I guess my question is: Is it possible to host a
website from a position other than c:/intepub/wwwroot?

Very Slow Performence
Hi
I used frontPage 2000 to build my websites which is hooked to MS SQL server 2000. Once I create an application from frontpage with the appropriate database settings and save it and finally Click "preview in web Browser", It takes too much time to display. I don't know when it will be displayed. The internet explorer 5's progress bar shows a fast performance intially and at some stage doesn't move and stays static. Once I stayed for over 1 hour to witness the result, but was in vain. It was still staying static. (note: Internet Speed is averagely faster which is using an ADSL connection) When I run my CGI applications, IE gives a "Internal Server Error" at some times or else produces "XML Rowset not found". IIS Permission Problems
I have a problem at work with IIS. I have an application sitting on a webserver with IIS 5.0. Today, I tried to alter the permissions of the application's folders so that a user authentication box would quit coming up when I pull up the application online. I basicly want anyone in the world to be able to access the site. I don't know a lot about permissions, but after I made changes which I thought were making the site available to everyone, now I don't get the user authentication box. Instead, I automatically get an error page saying that I'm not aloud to access this page. It no longer even checks for my username and password, it simply tells me that I don't have access. Does anyone have any idea what I could do to fix it? This is very important at work and I'm lost. Thanks! Tag: Cannot find IIS 6.0 on the microsoft website Tag: 322123

iis 6.0 / asp.net application / slows down periodically
Hi there,
We've developed an application that reads xml from a database and
converts it to html using xslt. It works fine most of the time but the
users are experiencing a problem. Periodically, a single page can take
as long as 15 seconds to load and then everything will speed up again
and will work fine for a while before doing the same thing again.
At first i thought that maybe memory was leaking and that the process
was being recycled and the page recompiled but there is nothing in the
system logs to suggest this and the w3wp.exe process id remains the
same.
Because of the nature of the system I cannot provide configuration
info etc but advice about how to identify the problem would be very
helpful indeed. Take care and thank you for taking the time to read
this message.

IIS servers
Hello,
Our organization is constantly faced with an ever growing number of web
based applications that require full installations on our IIS server. What
we have done is install each application on our IIS server. Each app
usually creates its own web underneath the default web site. And with all
these applications comes updates, patches, and upgrades. All of which
usually mean running setup.exe on the IIS box and letting the installer do
its thing.
Not being a seasoned IIS veteran, I'm wondering if we should change course.
I was thinking about moving some of these apps to inexpensive 1U servers, so
that each app gets its own server. What's the recommended practice, and
what are some things I should be thinking about?
With each change, and each new app, I get more worried that one of these
days an app is going to hose the whole server, or maybe break the
functionality of another app. Some config changes require messing with DCOM
settings, etc. It just gets me uneasy.
Let me know if you have any thoughts for a novice IIS admin.
Thanks,

CDONTS - Newmail corrupt attachment
I have found that if an attachment whose size is n*45+14
is attached using NewMail, the attachment is corrupted,
and can not be read by the recipient. If the attachment
is an RTF file, Word 2003 refuses to open it at all,
giving a pop-up saying "Word experienced an error trying
to open the file." Wordpad opens the file, with a bit of
garble at the end.
We have worked round the problem by checking the file
size when it is generated, and if appropriate adding CR
LF to the end (outside the RTF terminator).
The problem seems to have been introduced when Service
Pack 3 for Windows 2000 Server was installed in June 2003.
The problem can be reproduced with the following .vbs
script, run with cscript:

If the file attch.txt is exactly 59 bytes long (or any
other size that is n*45+14), the attachment to the email
will be 69 bytes long, with the last few bytes corrupt.
The cause is that the attachment is sent uuencoded, and
if the number of bytes to be encoded into the last data
line of the uuencoded stream is 14, the first character
on the line is ">" when it ought to be "." . On my (UK)
keybourd these are on the same key - I wonder if there is
a lookup table with a wrong value in it? Tag: Cannot find IIS 6.0 on the microsoft website Tag: 322014
ie 6 / office 2000 caching problem ...
Hello,
on one of our customers sites we run a asp solution, where users share
documents on a central document store through our application. the uploaded
documents are stored in a central folder, named with a prefix (date+time)
and original document name, so that we get singular document names for each
document and can host duplicate document versions.
on showing the document in the web application the app copies the selected
document to a temporary folder and renames it to the origianal name, so that
the users gets it in the original condition.
with a response.redirect the web application delivers the document to the
client over the http protocol and the client opens the hosting application
(word, excel, powerpoint, acrobat reader, ...) and finally shows the
document for the user.
this works fine with pdf or graphics documents, but with office documents
the office client caching works contraproductive ... - office opens the
first document, which is in the client cache, this could mean, that the user
becomes not that one, he or she selected in application.
we tried to use various meta tags to tell the web server, that the web page
has to be reloaded, but this is no solution, because the web application has
always done the right thing. in the temporary folder is always the right
document version, but the client show eventually the wrong one, if there
already is a document with the same name, in the client cache.
does anybody know, how we can influence the way of working of the office
cache on the client????
the system environment we face at the customers site is:
> @Server:
- Windows 2000 Advanced Server English + SP3
- IIS5
> @Client:
- Windows 2000 German + SP3
- Office 2000 German + SP3
- IE 6.0 German + SP1
thanks for your advice!!!
yours, Christian

Hi,
Need a bit of help working out what I need to set this up.
I have a Windows 2000 server running, with 10 PC
contacting to it on a local domain.
What I want to do is collect all are incoming mail on our
server scan it for spam and virus's and all that, and
they our local pc look at the local server to get there
mail.
What type of systems do I need to run to do this? Tag: Cannot find IIS 6.0 on the microsoft website Tag: 322005
What services can I turn off?
Hi Folks,
I am coming from a UNIX/Linux world here, so please be kind!
I have recently installed IIS 5.5 under Windows 2000. I have patched
this server with all the service packs and hot fixes available, and
followed many security guides on how to lock the server down.
Under UNIX/Linux, I would normally disable all services and software
that isn't needed, so for instance if the server was running Apache I
would turn off finger, SMB/Samba and NFS etc. etc.
I am aware that I can do this under Windows 2000 from the Services
control panel, but what I can't find is a guide to what I can safely
turn off for the web server to just be a web server. I did try and
turn things off that I thought wouldn't be needed, but I ended up
getting into a bit of a mess with dependencies and chose to re-install
the server rather than work out what needs what :)
Most or some of the services are self explanitory, but can anyone
point me out to a guide where I can learn more about the services, in
particular what I can safely turn off on an IIS server that is only
serving web pages and isn't part of a domain or used for anything else
oher than serving web pages.
Thanks,

403.1 Error
Running Microsoft Content Management Server 2002 with SP1a on IIS5.1 on
Windows XP Professional with SP2, which is a development environment. The
database repository is a SQL Server 2000 with SP3a on a Windows 2000 Server
with SP4.
I had no problem with Viewing the website, or editing the website, but when
I am on "editing mode" on MCMS2002, if I click on the "Channel Properties"
or "Page Properties" link, I get a 403.1 error: Forbidden: Execute Access
Forbidden
Internet Information Services. I defintely did *not* do any manipulation to
the MCMS virtual directories/applications on IIS MMC, other than additing a
CMS virtual directory under my CMS application called (website), pointing to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Content Management Server\Server\IIS_CMS

Tracing an Access Violation in ISAPI dll
We are getting an intermittent access violation in our ISAP dll, we're
suspecting it's when new thread(s) are being created but as we cant
reproduce it in our test environment, even using Homer, the stress tester
we're having problems tracing the cause.
I've been looking at IISState over at iisfaq.com. Will an access violation
in a thread be caught automatically by IISState if I start it using
hardcrash (-hc) or softcrash (-sc) or will I have to wait till the client
reports the exception and run iisstate manually. Do I need to create a full
dump file, and will someone from this newsgroup be willing to help me
diagnose the output from IISState - if so what do i need to post and where.
Any help or advice on tracing this problem please

Seeking Advice - IIS 5.0 or Apache
Looking for advice, thoughts, pros & cons, etc. I'm considering
setting up a web server, at home, on a third PC running Win2K Pro and
either IIS 5.0 or Apache software.
The server would be connected to the net via my router and a cable
modem and I am thinking of trying out the TZO.com premier package that
would give me a static IP address.
There's no particular reason to do this as opposed to using a web
hosting service other than I just want to learn about web servers,
email servers, etc. Maybe even do some small scale web hosting of my
own - again just for the experience. I have no prior experience with
web servers, but I would like to check them out.
So, my questions would seem to be:
1) Am I nuts? (Not a general question, just confined to this project)
2) Should I use IIS 5.0 or Apache? (Leaning towards IIS 5.0)
3) Any particular hardware considerations? (Currently have my old
game machine available - 1.8GB P4, 512MB RAM, two 60GB
HDs (IDE) with Win2K installed). Sufficient to task? More RAM?
4) Any other considerations?
Any and all feedback appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Bivar Tag: Cannot find IIS 6.0 on the microsoft website Tag: 321974

What Operating System are you running?
For Windows 2000 (Pro and Server), Windows XP Pro, and Windows 2003 Server,
IIS is installed via the Add/Remove Programs control panel (click Windows
Components -> IIS or Windows Components -> Application Server)
For Windows NT Workstatation or Windows NT Server, you can download the NT
Option Pack from the MS Website, however you will not be able to run ASP.Net
pages on that version of IIS (v4).
Cheers
