    - Access to cmd shell thru asp-security question Hi, We have need to run server based .vbs files and other OS commands through active server pages i.e... Set oShell = Server.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") oShell.Run("c:\somecmd.bat",,True) Under Windows 2000 the EVERYONE group had read/execute rights against cmd.exe. Under 2003 this has been removed and in order to get my .asp file to execute the cmd shell I must grant the IUSR acct read/execute access to cmd.exe on the web server. Is there a better approach or "best practice" to properly secure my web server and still be able to shell out to cmd.exe from asp? Thanks for any insights!!!     - Novice seeking help re DCOM I've strayed into this unfamiliar territory while trying to track down various problems (implicating some problem with WMI) on my XP Home (SP1) PC. Could someone here kindly advise me how to interpret and hopefully fix the following please. In Component Services (Run DCOMCNFG.EXE) I left clicked 'COM+ Applications' and that gave me this error message: "An error occurred while processing the last operation, Error code 8004E00F - COM+ was unable to talk to the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator. The event log may contain additional troubleshooting information" In the Event Viewer, looking at the COM+ line, I see this: "The run-time environment was unable to initialize for transactions required to support transactional components. Make sure that MS-DTC is running.     - Unable to download files from https with Internet Explorer Hello, I am using tomcat with SSL connection which is running fine, however I have a problem to download an excel files with internet Explorer. In fact I am using a servlet which stream data in the correct format to create an excel files. This servlet is working fine when I am executing it from a non secure connection but when I am under Https I am having error message. If I want to open the file with excel, I get: Impossible to open: https://localhost/.... then another popup message: Microsoft Excel cannot access the file 'https://localhost/....' There are several possible reasons: The file name or path does not exist. The file you're trying to open is being used by another program. Close the document in the other program, and try again. The name of the workbook you're trying to save is the same as the name of another document that is read-only. Try saving the workbook with a different name. And if I try to save the file, I get: Cannot save target. Internet Explorer was not able to open the web site. Web site cannot be found... However, I can open and save the file under secure connection using FireFox and Opera Explorer.     - w3wp.exe keeps crashing Hi there, I have a Windows 2003 Web Edition server, with all lates patches that keeps crashing every hour or so, resulting in all sessions to be lost, so all my thousands of users have to login again. And offcourse, this is annoying. Wheneven this happens, I get this error in my eventlog : "Faulting application w3wp.exe, version 6.0.3790.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000. I think this error has been much, much more frequent since I patched the server on the 13th of october 2004, when Microsoft released a bunch of new patches.     - shortcuts all lead to new windows being opened please forgive if i've posted in the wrong area. over the last couple of weeks, i seem to have turned on some feature that opens a new internet explorer 6.0 window every time i link from a shortcut in my email or a link embedded in a web page (even the ones that aren't supposed to open new pages on purpose). i've already tried unchecking and rechecking the box in internet options that says to reuse windows for shortcuts (or something like that) but it isn't working. i'm open to any ideas! it's getting a little bothersome on a laptop with no mouse closing the zillions of windows and i'm losing my ability to go forward and backward through my pages visited due to this. thanks so much!     - IIS6 + ASP.NET : Performance Problems In the past days, i have programmed a complete site using asp.net . I put it on my server and most worked like expected. After correcting the last erros, i mentioned tha every time, when the site unvisted for some minutes, it takes lot of until the site is loaded. When i click several links in a short time, everything works fine - and if i pause 10 minutes, the first loading lasts nearly 20 second. During thing 20 seconds, the cpu usage of the server is relativ high. Is the server compiling the asp.net pages every time ?     - How to use link transalation for 'web folders' We make extensive use of ISA 'link translation' to hide multiple IIS servers behind a single external URL (simplifies access and cuts down on SSL cert costs). This works fine when accessing folders on an internal server using a 'simple' URL. eg https://external.domain.com/staff maps to http://internal.domain.com/staff and link translations correctly changes the URLs sent back to the client. Everthing works fine and you can drill down to sub-folders, open doc etc etc. However problems occur when we try to open a folder using the 'web folders' system (ie the one that displays nice icons in IE). If you try to do an 'Open as web folder' on https://external.domain.com/staff the top-level folder works just fine.....but if you try to drill down to anything Subfolder or document) the link fails as the system is trying to open https://internal.domain.com/staff/sub-folder which is not accessable over the internet. Is this a known issue with web folders? It seems as though the ISA link translation is not managing to translate the links that are encapsulated in the 'web folders' (in my limited understanding of the process).     - II6 Download Prompt Window When you click on a download link you normally get the box that asks if you want to open it or save it well I accidently clicked the little box that says don't show this anymore and then whenever I clicked on a download it would automatically save it to a temp folder. This error is written to the event log when attempting to create a new asp.net application in VS.net 2k3. Then I reinstalled them is this order... IIS, asp.net 1.1, VS.net 2k3. Now I'm back to the original error above.     - File download performance issue Hi! I've tried installing several online forums/communities at my server running IIS 6 on 2003 web edition. The problem I have is that when the forum (php-based) rename the file extensions (.ipb instead of .wmv, or .attach for the same extension in another forum) performance seems to drop. First I thought it was a mime issue, but changed that and it didn't make any diff. The difference between the same file can be: 100KB/s instead of 650KB/s. Several times I've added two posts in a forum, one containing a url to the file and the other using the forum attachement feature (POST feature in php, file renamed to .attach, forum then rename the file correctly when requested for). The result is that I've always had at least 300% better performance when not using the .attach file - i.e. using the file that's not been renamed by the forum. My best guess was Mime, but it didn't do any good. Any suggestions?     - SMTP Email Address Size Limitation I have setup my Windows 2000 Server as a SMTP server to forward email. I have confirmed that there is a limit to the size of the From and To email addresses that can be used. It appears to be a limit of 32 characters total. I realize this seems like it should be large enough, but unfortunately, we have some people that we send email to that have email addresses as large as 50 characters.     - Executing a .EXE CGI program About a year ago this thread (of which this was the first post) appeared. I know some folks who are now in exactly the same situation. Does anyone know if there has been a satisfactory workaround for this, or if Microsoft has added a feature in IIS to make it possible to run cgi-programs in IIS that DO NOT have a .EXE extension.? (I'm a Linux/Unix person myself, and I was pretty surprised to find that this was a problem in IIS.) It's these folks-I-know's server provider who says they have to serve up all cgi-bin files with .EXE extension, versus these folks-I-know's client who says they cannot and will not let any files with a .EXE extension through their firewall. The server provider is also the provider of some extremely-industry-specific software that is running on this provider's server (basicaly a really specific-industry-specialized database) for which these folks-I-know have already shelled out a great deal of money. No hope of changing providers as the server, the service, and the software are all one paid-for package, run by the provider, but the provider is obviously running IIS. Any help possible? It would be greatly appreciated! (No, it's not me who has the problem, but these are REALLY good friends of mine!)     - Counters I wanted a counter of some kind to count all visits to all pages within my company's internal website. I was looking at ASP code but everything I looked at required that all my pages be asp pages in order to work. I need something that will work on htm(l) pages as well as asp pages. Someone in another NG had this to say: "In IIS you can set .htm and .html extension files to act like .asp files and be processed by the asp engine.". I don't know how to do that.     - Technical help for iisstate log and ASP.NET error needed Dear list! We are running IIS6 on W2K3 Server with all recent patches. According to iistate, a single ASP.NET application throws constant errors (access violations) upon usage. The errors influence another ASP application resulting in the associated application pool being stopped and the ASP app not being available any more. Luckily this influence is fixed by applying the Jet-Patch, but the inital errors remain. The vendor says that such errors are normal in any ASP.NET application and if not then at least in any installation of his application. We should not pay attention to the errors or by a separate server dedicated for his app. But I cannot sleep very well with an application throwing tons of errors on my servers. Unfortunately I do not have enough insight knowledge about ASP.NET to be able to judge the vendor's statement. Can anybody say what is going wrong on the server? here is the log.     - using Sleep() in server-side environment and high CPU utilization I have an ASP application that performs following task: User submits data from ASP page, ASP page calls VB6 component that creates a file based on user input and then calls external program (call it "P1") to send that file to back-end via TCP/sockets. Component waits for some time (about 20 sec) and checks whether output file was generated by external process "P1". Then component reads the output file, generates response for ASP page and displays that result to the end-user in the browser. While external process "P1" is working, I use Sleep() function in VB component to wait for file generation. Webserver is Windows 2000 with IIS 5. Customer experiences high CPU utilization, system gets slow and eventually hangs... I was suggested that using Sleep() in server-side environment is a bad idea. And 20 seconds of Sleep is too long. Why is using Sleep() such a bad idea? I thought Sleep() actually releases CPU time for given thread letting other threads work... What is the reasonable time to Sleep? What alternative to Sleep() can I use? Remember, I need to keep browser session open to be able to display result to the user after output file is generated by external process...     - HTTP.SYS bug with POSTS? I have read some discussion of a known HTTP.SYS bug that could prematurely time-out POST operations in IIS6, and I may be a victim of it. My servers need to receive lots of http POST's from a desktop client application that migrates data up to our server. These POSTS are small (about 200 bytes each), each requires a few seconds of server side processing, and they are sent by the hundreds or thousands from the client. All works well on IIS5. Newer IIS6 boxes raise Timer_ConnectionIdle and Timer_MinBytesPerSecond errors in httperror log, and client is disconnected before the transaction is complete. I understand that these would look like a DoS attack and appreciate having the option of blocking them at the server, however they are not, and I need these IIS6 boxes to correctly receive the entire series of POSTS. Does anyone know if a change to MinBytesPerSecond would correct this, and if so, which way to adjust this value? Or is this the known bug and, if so, when and where is the fix? All pages were working just fine on my previous Windows 2003 server, I recently moved to a new server and now when I try and load these pages, I get an error that states that these files cannot have ".."     - IIS using reading catalog via intranet Hi, I've got the task to build an intranet for users, who require a search function in our archive. The Archive is about 60GB, and i made an catalog (called archive) I'm able to search in the archive on the local server (as a admin user) But when i try to search from a werkstation, i get the "access is denied" error. As a search form i use the "C:/[windowsfolder]/Help/ciquery.htm" It runs perfectly on the server, but somehow the workstation isn't allowed to search through the catalog. I gave this user full rights and changed the permissions on several files as mentioned in other groups. Perhaps the path to the catalog is wrong, but i don't know the syntax to call a catalog from the network. Can anyone help me? Hi folks,
Our problem is that the behavior of Date/Time Format Differs When Accessed
from Active Server Pages. For example our regional settings are dd/MM/yyyy
but when an ASP page is accessed it writes the date as MM/dd/yyyy. We found
an article on the Microsoft website and followed the instructions as you can
see here, http://www.barrowvale.com/IIS5DateTimeDiffers/. It still hasn't
solved the problem though.

Has anybody any ideas
