    - IIS 5.1 500 Internal Server Error I have an error very similar to others here but steps i have taken have failed to rectify the problem. When I try to display an asp or html file in my localhost i get the 500 Internal Server Error. If I turn of the friendly messages it displays: Server Application Error The server has encountered an error while loading an application during the processing of your request. Please refer to the event log for more detail information. Please contact the server administrator for assistance. This is the error report from the Event Viewer: DCOM got error "Overlapped I/O operation is in progress. " and was unable to logon .\IWAM_BEN in order to run the server: {3D14228D-FBE1-11D0-995D-00C04FD919C1} And the warning: The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT'. The error was 'The server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect. Check the username and password. '. I have previously had this working but does not work any more.     - IIS web proxy Hello All, I want to publish my website from behind a firewall, how can I do that? Here is my setup. I have a small intranet which is configured as follows Router facing the internet configured with NAT so port redirect has been configured. IIS is installed on a SBS2K server behind the Router, there is an ISA firewall running on the SBS2K server. port 80 and 8080 is being used by ISA web proxy, so IIS sites are running on port 801. Now I redirect port 801 from router to the IIS to service one website on the SBS2K, works fine. Now I also have a separate development server on our intranet from which I want to publish a website. Since router can only publish websites from the IIS installed on the SBS2K, the only way I can think of publishing a website from the dev server is to use a web proxy somehow, like one provided in Apache webserver. i.e request comes to IIS of SBS2K which does a proxy for the IIS on the Dev Server and services the website. Is there a way to do that with IIS? if not is there an alternate solution without compromising the security of the network?     - Good Windows 2003 server firewall I'm looking to add a firewall for a Windows 2003 web server that's running IIS, FTP, and SQL Server. I've looked at Kerio Server Firewall and I like their intrusion prevention and application hardening features. However the price tag looks to be a little high, at $600 + subscription fees. Are there good alternatives that you guys can recommend? Free would be even better of course.     - SMTP AUTH not happenning I have IIS 5.0 configured to send everything to a non-MS smarthost. Outbound Security is Basic Authentication w/user+pass over TLS. This has been working fine for 6 months, but stopped working the other day when the smarthost's root certificate expired. I deleted all traces that I could find of the old CA cert from the IIS machine, and installed the new one in the Local Machine \ TRCA branch. Now IIS will STARTTLS okay, but it never tries to send an AUTH command. The other side is offering LOGIN and PLAIN. The smarthost is working for other clients, just not IIS. What could be wrong?     - Japanese File name is getting junk in file download dialog hi, My web application has a link for file download (This file is stored in Database in Binary format). After clicking on which "File Download" dialog will appear. In this the file name is getting junk. Please note that Its a Japanese web site and the web application is hosted on Win2K advanced Server (Japanese version).     - Log File Reports I have a Windows 2003 Standard Edition Server running IIS. I have enabled loging for my websites and it logs all site activity to daily files. All hosting companies, that I have seen, have an "Admin" section for thier users that shows them site statistics such as number of unique visitors, most popular page, etc.. . How can I do that for my server? I have searched Google for an answer with no luck. Is it something built into IIS that I am mising or is it a third party app?     - IIS5 and FP 2000 Extensions I cannot seem to get FrontPage Extensions working on a Windows 2000 Server we have. It has IIS5. I have removed and reinstalled them, but when I go to another computer and try and add it to my network places, it tells me this is not a valid location.     - IIS Authentication Issue We have IIS 6 running on an Exchange 2003 server (Win2K3) with an extension called Public Folder Viewer. All users can access the website but when a topic is expanded and a link to a subject is clicked on a Windows authentication dialogue appears entitled "Connect to <NameOfExchangeServer>.company.com.au". If a user clicks on cancel they then see the resultant topic in the right pane of the web site and can download or view any linked documents in the topic. So the problem only occurs when they click on a link to a topic and it doesn't stop them from accessing the topic. Users accessing this site using IE 5.0 or 5.5 don't have this issue and users with IE 6.0 can avoid the issue if "Enable Integrated Windows Authentication" is turned off. I wouldn't have thought that it was a kerberos issue as the IIS server and Exchange server are the same box. Sharepoint Services have *not* been installed on this server, so that can't take the blame. Using adsutil.vbs to check the authentication method returns "The parameter "NTAuthenticationProviders" is not set at this node." Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Doug.     - Unable to have a FrontPage form e-mail results. I have created a new site and imported the original site in from another server. I am having a problem with the forms, I am unable to add an e-mail address for the results to be sent to. When I try to add the e-mail in FrontPage I recieve the following message: "This form cannot be configured to send results via e-mail. The Web site may be located at a disk-based location, or on a server that has not been configured to send email. Contact your system admin or ISP for more info, Would you like to remove the e-mail reciepient?" - I have tried creating a new form with same results. - I have created a new form in another web sit eon the same server and I dont have the problem. - I have confirmed that FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 Server Administration page has a my smtp server which is the same as the site I mentioned above this note.     - IIS Out of Memory I have a website that uses ASP and VB6 SP5 DLLs. The DLL uses winsock APIs. About every two days, the lookups that I am doing stop working and I get an error message "out of memory". When this happens, I can still call the home page, enter lookup criteria, and attempt the lookup. The error comes from the DLL, and I cannot figure it out. I've made sure I am destroying all objects. Also when the lookups are not working, everything else works just fine on the website and computer memory is OK. Since I have tried everything with the DLL I know, I believe the problem to be with IIS. Can anyone offer suggestions of how to determine where to go to fix this or get more information?     - Hidden Form Fields expire Hi, Tried looking for similar problems, but cannot locate any previous posts.. I have a simple app that uses hidden form fields (userID,password) carried from page to page with a POST and retrieved on the next page and validated against a file. All works well, except that every so often, usually after the session is open for more than say 10 minutes, the hidden fields are cleared out and arrive with no value after a POST. This can get to a point where every second POST looses the data. Deleting Temporary Internet Files in IE6 can improve this, but it does come back eventually. https:// sessions seem to be more affected than http://. It started about mid 2004, I'm thinking some upgrade to the Win2000 Server (SP4)? Could this be some sort of security expiry "feature" that I can turn off on the Server?     - IUSER and Write Access Problem I am having an argument with someone right now about permissions and the anonymous IUSER. This person has insisted that I give the IUSER write permissions to a web site he is developing so that he can get his ASP code to work. I have compromised by creating a subdirectory for him. My ideal setup would be to have his ASP pages in the root of the web, and then have those pages use this sub-directory to create and write these temporary data files he needs. Instead of modifying his code he has simply moved all of his ASP pages into that subdirectory to run. I want to prove to my manager that this is bad and that our developer needs to secure his code. Anybody know of a good exploit I can demo? How can I write a file to this web site as if I were an anonymous user?     - Add a second iis node to nlb Hello, I need to add a second front end IIS 6.0 server to my configuration. I have a first front end IIS 6.0 server (87 web sites) and the nlb service configured, a domain controller for authentifications, and a file server used as an unc web share. I need to figure out how to add a second front end node. Do you think that using iiscnfg in copy mode is the right way to go?     - Index Services Logs I know that IIS logs search keywords used from referring sites like Google, Yahoo etc. However when using Index Services as the internal search engine using an ASP search page as the front end, do the search keywords get logged in the IIS log files?     - Website logon window Server 2003, standard. I have installed the internet information service component that allows a website to be created and placed into the wwwroot file. My only problem is that all user's internal, external or logged onto the domain need to enter a username and password. The site is only available using the IP address and i don't mind occasional browsers. Is there a way to have it as an open site so anyone who enters the Ip address can see the homepage. Then from here i plan to use the NTFS security settings to allow access to differnet pages, with some pages open. I have managed to use this to disallow access to some users who have been dissallowed viewing of a page - they are presented with a login window and prompted for alternative credentials. to summarise, is there a way to configure my site so anyone can access the homepage without been required to logon. the place the site will be used most some how have blocked the login window from popping up giving me the unauthorised page straight away with no way to logon. all suggestions are welcome.     - Appropriate ports for 1 IP many SSL sites? I have multiple websites on IIS 6 that I want to have SSL. I discovered that I must use a separate SSL certificate for each website. I have only one IP so I'll have to use different ports for each website. If I go this route, then my question has to do with ports. I know 443 is the default so I won't use that one. I want to choose an appropriate port number for each SSL site. I found a site that lists all the ports at http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers but... What are appropriate ports to use?     - Certificate Authority Removed Hi all, I removed our win2k Pki root authority certificate server some time ago where root iis5.0 web server exists, now seeing crypto errors in W3svc root log for the old authority like it still exists but can not connect to it. Tried removing any old root server certificate store objects from AD with Ldp showing no results. It looks like iis5.0 metabase still referencing this old authority?. The root web has no/never had certificate selected for security, not sure where these repeated messages come from but it clogs the logs daily hourly and would like to clean it up or know why this has occurred.     - DLL / Update without restarting Web Service? I have setup a website which uses an old DLL file (created with Delphi 6.0) created by another individual. What I would like to do is: Be able to update (over-write) the DLL file with an updated DLL file from time to time (this is an automated process - anytime the file <dllname>.update is put into the host directory, it automatically renames <dllname>.update to <dllname>.dll. To achieve this, I have had to use a NET STOP W3SVC nad NET START W3SVC commands - this allows the DLL to be freed up without restarting the entire IIS service. At any rate, what I would like to do is to find a way that we could perform this update WITHOUT resetting the W3SVC service. I have read some about using COM+ modules, but am confused on whether or not I could us the delphi-created DLL file to put it in the COM+ module (I get an error everytime I try). Simply put - the DLL keeps track of how many active connections are using it. I would like to modify my VB app (which checks for the <dllname>.update file - if it exists, it then stops the W3SVC service, backs up the <dllname>.dll file for backup, then renames the <dllname>.update file to <dllname>.dll, then restarts the service). I would like to modify this VB app so that it could somehow allow any active sessions on the DLL to continue as they are, but that the update could continue and any NEW sessions would be using the new DLL. Will my current setup allow this, or will restarting the W3SVC service axe all the current sessions. Is there a way to accomplish this? Is there a way to us the Delphi DLL as a COM or COM+ component? I know I probably have been too clear - this is a totally new area to me. Please don't hesitate to ask for clarification or further information if it would help my cause.     - Problems configuring IIS for ASP.NET Application I am trying to install an ASP.NET application onto a Windows XP Laptop for demo purposes where there is no internet connection available. The application has been deployed on servers and is known to work. I have very limited experience with IIS configuration -- I normally handle the software dev and db side of things. The laptop did not have IIS installed, so I started with that. I then confirmed that IIS was running by hitting the localhost page -- and all was fine. I went and created a virtual directory in the IIS manager, and put required files in place. I went to hit the home page -- it is an html page that opens up a couple of frames -- it was served up correctly, but any of the ASPX files are not executed, but instead display their source text.     - Configuration Database I installed sharepoint services about six months ago and all was fine until yesterday...."The Web site that is referenced here is not in the configuration database" comes up instead of my top level website. I tried to do everything related to this error that was in the knowledge base but nothing wants to give, message is still there.....     - Samba Share leads to error 500 I have a Samba share that I've created from a Linux box. I've mapped this sucessfully to drive in Windows 2003 server. I'm also able to read/write to it under Windows explorer just fine. It's using user security so I have to enter the username and password defined in the Linux box when connecting to this share. I then mapped a virtual directory under IIS to the UNC name of this Samba network share (\\MachineName\ShareFolder) and saved the Samba connection login. This is when the problems began. Now whenever I goto my browser and type the url to that folder I get an error 500. The IIS log file shows this: 2005-02-03 14:29:11 192.168.1.150 GET /test/test.jpg - 81 - 192.168.1.150 Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+MSIE+6.0;+Windows+NT+5.2;+.NET+CLR+1.1.4322) - 500 16 1326 15 "/test/" is the virtual directory that I've mapped the Samba share to.     - Connection timeout or what? I'm executing an ASP script wich needs at least 8,5 minutes to generate a file (.csv) on the server. After exactly 2 minutes the server returns a DNS error page to the browser. The script execution continues though and after 8,5 minutes you find the generated file in its folder. I'm on a hosting company and the suppot told me connection timeout is set at 1,200 seconds (more than I need) and http-keepalive is checked. Any idea... Thanks.     - AdminACL Hi, I've installed and configured an IIS 6.0 support server in other site (City) that production IIS server. Each server has one different configurations than other (IP-Name) I use domain users, not local users, like iusr_... and iwam_... I only want to restore some web sites not all in the server -In production server I used: iiscnfg.vbs /export /f :\backup.xml /sp /LM/W3SVC/123456789 /children /inherited After that, I change server 1 IP address by server 2 IP address in backup.xml file -In Standby server: iiscnfg.vbs /import /f c:\backup.xml /sp LM/W3SVC/123456789 /dp LM/W3SVC/123456789 /children /inherited If my production server goes down I have only add an Alias (CNAME) in DNS Server EVERYTHINK SEEMS WORK FINE but I can see AdminACL is different in metabese.xml file in the target server. I need to know if I will be problems with differents AdminACL values What is meaning of AdminACL?     - Regarding the IIS Utility components Hi We have migrated from IIS 5.0 to IIS 6.0 and noted that the IIS Utility components are not installed by default. I read in the "What's Changed in IIS-document" that: "You can obtain copies of the utility component DLL files from the IIS 6.0 Resource Kit" I then tried downloading the IIS 6.0 Resource Kit, but found no references to these DLL-files (and no files either). Am I blind or are they missing? If so, does anyone know how you get them?     - IISState confusion I've installed IISState according to the instructions on www.iisfaq.com But I'm confused 1. Where can I find the dll's that need to be copied to \iisstate? I couldn't find them at the mentioned link. What about the files that got installed with the iisstate installation? 2. I installed the Windows Server 2003 DDK and the Windows Server 2003 Symbols from msdn downloads. But when we monitered the network packets between IIS server and the browser, IIS 6.0 seem to be sending the page, line by line while IIS 5.0 is sending the information a page at a time.     - IIS can not start - port 80 has been used by other application I am using IIS 5.1, and it is set to listening to port 80. Now IIS does not start when I reboot and login using my user profile. I can not start it manualy either. It shows "Unexpected error 0x8ffe2740" consistantly. This is not happen when I use Administrator to reboot and login. I found that another application already running on 0.0.0.0:80 local address if I am using my profile. If I login as Administrator, the 0.0.0.0:80 is not used and IIS is running fine.     - IIS6.0 + Win2003: Need basic 101 help Hi all. I have a working website on a shared account thru my hosting company. I'm now moving this to a dedicated server running Win2003 and IIS 6.0. Part of the "plan" that I've opted for requires that I become the server administrator. I am **not** a server person, but can learn quickly (all my career's been in the appdev side of things). Looking for the following: 1. Recommended quick reading for an overview on what IIS actually is; i.e. what a virtual directory is and so on. Need to find out what the various terms (e.g. isolated user) really mean, and more - what are best practices for a newbie. 2. Help!!! After configuring IIS (with assistance from the hosting company's walk-through) and setting up a default web site location (and ensuring FP Extensions are installed), I cannot access this site via FP 2003. FTP works just fine. I have ensured the home path folders have perms that allow me full control (when I'm logged in as an admin on the box). If I try to open a site via the IP address, I don't even get prompted for logon credentials. Instead, I just get an instant error from FP stating that "the folder "http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/" isn't accessible. The folder may be located in an unavailable location... blah blah blah". I'm not sure if this is an IIS configuration issue, a FP 2003 issue, pure stupid/ignorant user issue or some combination of all three. The helpdesk people at the hosting company were also confused, they also could not open or create a site via FP 2003. While this has been escalated at the hosting company, I need to know more about what's up. 3. For the moment, just looking for a "by rote" answer on how to create a web on this new box. I am hoping to use IIS 6 and BITS as a mechanism to upload files from remote
sites to a centralized server. I've done some test configurations, and the
bandwidth throttling features of IIS 6 seem to affect BITS downloads, but
not uploads. Is there some other way to affect the upload rate of BITS at
the IIS server?

Hi mrxether,

You may need a front-end ISA proxy server to perform such task. As I
know so far it's the only solid way to manage incoming connections'
bandwidth throttling. Please refer to the following article:
