Hello,

I wanted to know if there is something here I am missing
in my server config to help this situation, or am I to
look elsewhere?
I currently have an upload speed of 512kbps which is ok
for me and what I do. However when I download a file from
my site the tranfer rate in the dialogue box shows 58
kb/sec where is the descrepency or is this correct?

Thanks
Joe

I think you will find that the dialog is saying 58KB (bytes, not bits)
With overhead, 58K seems about right, an overhead of just about 10%.

to add onto mr.hipson's reply, 512kbps is bits, there are
8 bits to a byte. 58KB/S is bytes. so that is the
correct speed for your connection.

Anything I can do on the server side to help out?

One other thing is... your download will only be as fast as the slowest
connection to you, meaning if you are downloading from somewhere else in the
world and that server that you are connected to is only on a 64 kb line then
that is as fast as it gets. You will always connect to a server at the
slowest line speed that is taking you to that server, if you were on a T3
line and the server you are connecting to is on a 56 K v.90 dial up modem
you'll be lucky to see 2 kb/sec. Weakest Link Syndrome!

To help with what?

You have a connection of 512 kilobits/second
Now 1 byte = 8 bits
So, 512 kilobites/second = 64 kilobytes/second

There is some overhead in TCP/IP (some of the bandwidth is used for
addressing, error correction etc), so 58 kilobytes/second of data is
probably your full bandwidth speed.

Cheers
Ken
