        • Log Parser 2.2 Released Log parser is a powerful, versatile tool that provides universal query access to text-based data such as log files, XML files and CSV files, as well as key data sources on the Windows® operating system such as the Event Log, the Registry, the file system, and Active Directory®. You tell Log Parser what information you need and how you want it processed. The results of your query can be custom-formatted in text based output, or they can be persisted to more specialty targets like SQL, SYSLOG, or a chart. Most software is designed to accomplish a limited numer of specific tasks. Log Parser is different... the number of ways it can be used is limited only by the needs and imagination of the user. The world is your database with Log Parser. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=890cd06b-abf8-4c25-91b2-f8d975cf8c07&displaylang=en Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353880

        • IIS running JSP pages Is there a .NET plug in or other component that allows IIS to run JSP pages? I know that I can use the ISAPI filter to pass JSP pages to another server (eg Tomcat). But I am wondering if there is anything else available, that would allow IIS to run JSP directly, without having to have another webserver present. Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353877

        • 2003 Server ASP.NET Problem (IE Only!) I have an ASP.NET application that works fine on most Windows machines. I installed it on a new 2003 server and now I am having problems. I set the security settings in IIS to serve ASP, and almost everything else. When using our app, the user enters his login and password on the first screen and clicks "Login", but the app doesn't do anything. No postback, no error, nothing. When I run the app locally on the 2003 box, the user clicks "Login" and all of the validators on the page show up (they shouldn't), and it still does nothing. When I try to run the app using Firefox instead of IE, it works fine! Any ideas? Chris Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353876

        • Unable to create virtual directory from file Hi, I'm trying to export/import a virtual directory in IIS6 running on a Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition Service pack 1 RC1. I've done this before on other machines, and it usually works like a charm. (btw. this is what I'm trying to do: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=817379) Exporting a configuration works, but when I pick a file to import and klick 'read file' nothing happends! No errors, no dialogs just nothing! I also discovered that if I choose to encrypt the configuration when I export it, it is saved as plain xml anyway! I suspect that this has something to do with service pack 1, but I dont think it's worth uninstalling SP1 just to find out. Everything else seem to work as expected. Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353875

        • Timeout of an ASP.Net request in IIS Hi, in our ASP.Net 1.1 application we do some time consuming tasks (they take up to 15 minutes) by calling some SQL Server Stored procedures for archiving matters. This is done by a HTTP request in server sided SAP.Net code. Some of our costumers always gets a time out error on his machine: HttpException (0x80004005): Zeit für Anforderung überschritten This happens after at latest 5 minutes after starting the task, even though we have set the connection timeout for the standard website in IIS to 10000 seconds on his machine. Is there another possibilty to increase the time out for ASP.Net requests? For any help many thanks in advance! Best regards Henry Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353874

        • IUSR password needs resetting every reboot Every month or two, our W2K web server gets rebooted, and more often than not, the first time you view our web site (IIS 5), you see a login prompt asking for Windows credentials. I've found that the only way to view the web site is to change the IUSR_MACHINE password in compmgmt.msc and then update it in inetmgr under Master WWW Service Properties | Directory Security tab | Anonymous account account. To get a few .asp pages on the site also working, you have to update the IWAM_MACHINE password in compmgmt.msc, and then update that in Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Component Services | My Computer | COM+ Applications | IIS Out-of-Process Pooled Applications | Identity. With the IIS password, after having updated it, I always check "Allow IIS to control password", but this problem continually recurs. Does anyone know why this might be happening? I've got a sneaking feeling it may be that there's some local policy that's been altered that might be causing this (perhaps by preventing IIS to manage the password), but don't know which one. Could it be that with complexity requirements enforced, IISs attempts to manage the password fails? Thanks. -- Aidan Whitehall Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353869

Recently there is a problem where the aspnet_wp.exe process is running consistently at 50% CPU across 2 CPUs of the server. Over the IE, users are experiencing this error -> "Timeout, expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." Tried to restart the WS2003 and everything is back to normal. Is there anything wrong with the aspnet_wp.exe process. How to ensure this problem will not repeat? Also am I facing some generic problem which other users have faced before? Thanks. • Https only? Hello, I have an ASP website setup on IIS 6.0 on Windows 2003 Enterprise edition - everything is working as ecxpected, and I have installed a temporary SSL certificate from Thawte. The problem I am having is that the site responds to both http and https requests - I need it to do https only . I haven't done a lot of these, but it seems IIS 5.0 had a checkbox for this functionality, but I just cannot locate in 6.0. Any assistance would be appreciated Regards Paul Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353838

        • Unable to start debugging on Web Server I get this error when I run this application from Visual Studio .Net: "Error while trying run project: Unable to start debugging on the web server. The Com+Registry database detected a system error. Would you like to disable future attempts to debug asp.net pages for this project.?" It runs fine is I run without debugging. Other Projects I installed from Book CDs, run fine in Debug mode. Please let me know where I can set it up. I checked in Properties for my project in IIS - looked fine or the same as other projects to run ok in debug mode. Joe Burgos Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353837

        • loading html pages in frames We have a fairly simply web app that for some reason is having problems on 2003 IIS 6 Basically if the htm file exists in this directory we show a link on the web page for the user to click on. It then loads that htm in the second frame. We have this working at several sites. We have named the frame and when we create the link we set the target to the name of the frame. Now then that link is in a virtual directory that is a subdirectory of another virtual directory . I added the first virtual directory to the default web site.( ie. To the default web a virtual directory call temp and then added a virtual directory called data in temp.) When setting up the virutal directories I used the defaults Read and Execute Scripts and made no other changes. On the actual file folders I have given Everyone and IUSR account full access. In WebServices extensions I have allowed Active Server Pages. On the server when we click on the link we get a momentary downloading window like you get when the browser is downloading a file it can't handle itself and then it loads it in a new browser window. The address bar doesn't show the actual url but shows the actual path in the temp directory(ie. c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp....) So it does download the file. I have found that even if I copy the shortcut and paste it in the address bar I get the same behaviour. It momentarily shows the file download and then launches it from the temp cache. So I get the same the same kind of behaviour so I don't think it has anything to do with the link. On any other computer when I click on the link nothing happens. I've even checked the web server logging files. No request is ever sent to the server if its not initiated on the server. If I copy the shortcut to the address bar, the html file loads correctly in the same window. Now I've also just tried putting an html file in the temp folder and trying to load it but I get the same behaviour as trying to load from the temp->data virtual folder. The html file does load if put in wwwroot. Now for the weirdest part of this. Say I decide to create a new virtual directory off the default web and will just say I call it dummy and then I add a data virtual folder to it. These virtual folders point to the same folders the others did. Sometimes the html page will load correctly on the server with the link. It won't work on any other computers though only the server. Now another catch if I try to load a different htm file out of the folder it displays the momentary download and displays the html file in a new browser window. Now I thought this might be a problem with the temp cache so I closed out of IE. the opened it back up and deleted all the temp inet files. I can still load the original html file in the browser like it should but the second file still has to download and launch a second browser. I'm not sure if this is some sort of user rights problem or setup of the webserver. I've removed the default website, restarted IIS, rebooted the machine, reentered everything. I am doing the same thing on another 2003 server and it works like it should. I'm at a loss as to what to do next...hopefully this is something that someone has fixed before. • local authentication problem I have a windows xp, sp2, workstation with iis installed in a corporate intranet. I use windows authentication to determine the user and it works fine. • all session restarted when script is run to build new web site hello all, I inherited a script which builds new web sites (windows 2003), it does a bunch of work but in essence - copies files - edit folder rights - adds the dns entries - uses osql for executing stored procedures - adds the web site (iisweb.vbs) - adds 2 virtual web directories (iisvdir) - reads from the metabase to set up web log program (var query = "SELECT Name, ServerComment FROM IIsWebServerSetting WHERE ServerComment='" + serverComment + "'"; var providerObj = GetObject("winmgmts:/root/MicrosoftIISv2"); var sites = providerObj.ExecQuery(query); ) 80% of the time this script is run all of the current sessions die on the computer. what command would cause this? as we build more and more sites it is becoming a real problem. any help would be great, nicholas.gadacz Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353822

The function of this tab would be to allow the administrator to deny admitance to requesters from particular countries. Can you point me to documentation that explains how to add a tab to the page, and any other aspects of this project. I already know how to identify the country from which the request originated. • Thought I would share something I have been hounded by the higher ups to make data mining our IIS hits into something meaningful for them for months. I have tried to use some of the built in reports in Crystal Reports, but they needed a lot of customization and took for ever to run. I just got this program called 123LogAnalyzer from the .com site by the same name and it was wicked easy to use. I created a batch file that runs the program from the command line every night and it created web page reports for the past day, 7 days, week to date, month to date, last month, last 30, 90 and 180 days. I dump each of the web reports into its own folder and I have a web page on my site that links to the reports so all the managers have to do is fire up the web page and see all the reports. I am pretty good with learning a program and I know how to do a little web page editing. I got this thing and in two hours I made it so I never have to do another thing again. It is pretty cool. This isn't any kind of promo. I just thought I had to pass this on because I have been having a hard time finding something like this that was not made for a huge company. • Website not loading Hi, I'm having a strange problem that I can't seem to find that answer to. We have two websites running off of one machine and 1 of them is running fine without any problems. But the other one, when we type in it's URL, the following message comes up: 220 Serv-U FTP Server v5.0 for WinSock ready... 530 Not logged in. 530 Not logged in. 530 Not logged in. 530 Not logged in. 331 User name okay, need password. 530 Not logged in. 530 Not logged in. 421 Maximum session time exceeded - closing. I'm not sure what that is supposed to mean since from what I can tell, we don't have Serv-U FTP server on our webserver. We use something called EFTP. Any ideas on what is keeping our webpage from loading? The site has been working without any problems. The only thing that happened was that the computer was rebooted. • FTP User Isolation Mode Questions I have a few questions regarding the new FTP user isolation modes introduced in Windows 2003 Server / IIS 6, specifically with the "Isolate users" mode, rather then the "Isolate users using Active Directory" mode. I would like to set up anonymous access on my FTP site, however, I do not wish anonymous users to have upload permission. If I disable write access on the FTP site's properties window, I can achieve this goal but, it also disables write access for all authenticated users. Is there a way to turn off write access for anonymous users only, without switching to an Active Directory setup? Also, is it possible to get the FTP service to follow shortcuts used as home directories or placed on the root of a physical home directory? The service does not resolve shortcuts, rather, displays them as binary .lnk files. Lastly, what is the minimum permission needed to grant a user access to their home directory? Some experimentation has shed some light on this question, however, I was hoping there is some Microsoft KB article or reference that states explicitly what permissions are needed so I can lockdown directories and files in the most secure fashion. - Harry Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353762

        • IIS Integrated Security Problems The issue boils down to the user name not being authenticated on the web server. The reason for this is yet unknown. I will do my best to explain the architecture and the problem. Domain: Win2K AD (recently migrated from NT) IIS Server: Win2k (member server) SP2 Client OS: XP SP2 Application setting in IIS: Integrated Security only. When the site was first hit, I was getting no authentication at all against either the FQDN or the NetBios server name. Having faced this issue before, I created an entry in the hosts file on the client for the server to make it think the server is in the Intranet Zone (which has corrected the issue in the past). This time after creating the hosts file entry, I did not get the expected results (having my user authenticate). When I hit the site for the first time through IE, everything seems fine, and the pages are returned. A few clicks into the web site, however, I start getting 401 errors. These errors happen at no particular time and on no particular page. When I look at my IIS logs, I see this: Date time IP mydomain\myuser GET pagerequested... 200 Date time IP mydomain\myuser GET pagerequested... 200 Date time IP - GET pagerequested... 401 In other words, the log files show that suddenly the requests lose the user authentication that HAD been working fine. Thus, I start receiving 401 errors. The event logs show nothing. My issue seems similar in nature to one posted a few days earlier discussing XP SP2 and Integrated Security: Search for: "IE automatic logon does not work after XP SP2" Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353760

        • Sharing Violation with xcopy -after adsutil.vbs APPUNLOAD & iis st IIS6.0 (noticed a similar post in IIS4.0 with no solution posted - thought I'd try my luck...) I'm working on a deployment issue for IIS. We are trying to copy in new files to the web server and keep getting sharing violation. • IIS (local) with MSSQL very slow Hello all, I'm running IIS 5.1 on Win XP Pro SP2. I have a simple ASP page (not .Net, the old version) that connects to a SQL box, runs a simple query and displays a list with the results. The thing is, it takes up to 1 minute to do this. SQL is out of question, it runs on the local box too, the query is on a table with 10 rows, IOW it returs the results instantly. The problem really seems to be within IIS. I used to have the exact same config on a Win 2K box and the results were instantaneous. I'm a SQL guy and don't know much about IIS. Any hints ? TIA -- Wumpa Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353756

        • Accessing IIS with FP on LAN I have installed Win2k3 Enterprise edition with IIS 6.0 and the Front page extensions are installed. Also enabled on the system is the ICS and Windows firewall. I have opened all the default ports on the firewall. My network is setup as a workg group. I am able to access the websites via the LAN and internet without problem. I have Frontpage 2003 on a workstation running WinXP SP2 and am trying to edit a website on the server but am unable to log in. I have set the user names and passwords using the share point administrator. If I try to log on with http://servername/website it want to log me in as servername/guest which can not be changed. If I use either the server IP or the website name using servername/user it just keeps not letting me in. My first guess is a firewall problem but I know the ports are open so I am at a loss for what to change next. Does anyone have a suggestion? Regards, John Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353751

        • W2K3 IIS 6.0 ASP.NET Requests Per Second Limits? Hi Guys, How are you? I have recently begun some testing on IIS 6.0 in regards to an asp.net application. After lots of testing I decided to create a simple 1k page size webpage to find out whats the max rps I can achieve. So I installed Microsoft Application Stress Tool (WAS) and started testing. I setup basic 2 tests page does no processing whatsoever: TEST 1 ====== Page : Page1.aspx - 1k in size WAS : 50 threads | 1 socket per thread | Test run 1 minute Server: 2 processors | W2k3 - IIS 6.0 TEST 2 ====== Page : Page2.aspx - 1k in size | 1 sec delay on webpage WAS : 50 threads | 1 socket per thread | Test run 1 minute Server: 2 processors | W2k3 - IIS 6.0 In TEST1 I managed to get around 800 - 1000 requests per second but in TEST2 I can only get 32 requests per second. The test was run on the same network using Private ip address 192.16.1.x So I decided to run TEST2 on another machine but this time on had 1 processor and I could only manage 12 requests per second. The above results were verified by performance counters and leads me to believe that there must be a limit imposed somewhere to restrict the number of requests per second based on processor. e.g 1 processor = 12 2 processors = 32 4 processors = xx My question is are any such limits imposed on w2k3? Am I doing the wrong test or misinterepting the results? Can someone suggest if I had a 1k asp.net page that does no processing except sleep for 1 second what type of results I should expect? Basically if I use no caching, no tricks what can I expect? Does changing machine.config settings help in this case? Regards DotNetShadow Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353735

        • IIS FTP server: 530 Login failed This is a repost from a post I made on microsoft.public.inetserver.iis.ftp. I have just noticed how little traffic there is there and this is becomming rather urgent. Hi, I am trying to set up an FTP server on a Win XP SP2 machine that has the firewall disabled. Our router has been set to forward port 21 to this machine. The FTP site is set to accept only anonymous connections using the following account: MACHINENAME\IUSR_MACHINENAME and IIS is set to control passwords. The user mentioned above has Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read and Write permissions on the Home Directory. The user also listed in the 'Local Security Setting - Log on locally' dialog. When I try and use ftp.exe to connect to the server (incidentally its on another machine in the same domain) I get the following: 331 Anonymous login ok, send your complete e-mail address as password I then offer it test@test.com but I get: 530 Login failed. I have Googled this to death and apart from being told to ensure that the user has the correct permissions on the folder and has Log On Locally enabled I have found nothing! Any ideas why this isn't working? TIA Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353731

        • Frequent IIS restart required with web service / ado.net Hello All, I'm looking for additional troubleshooting ideas on a persistant problem that is cropping up 'randomly' when a web service is communicating with the SQL server. Both machines are running win2k Server with the most recent service packs + .NET 1.1. The Web Service provides data to client software by connecting to the SQL server and executing stored procedures. A fairly common scenario I'd think. Anyway, at random points - or so far as we can determine, IIS reports that access to SQL server was not found or access denied. This condition will persist until you restart IIS after which everything resumes working as expected. I've verified that the machines have the same mdac version, .net version, and we've even looked for stuck open connections. I've recently setup an entirely new domain with clean installs and the same behavior occured. There are no error messages logged in SQL or IIS - or the event logs for either machine. Where else can I go with this? This feels like a fairly generic error and the apparent random nature hints that there is a specific set of conditions that have to be met to repro the issue - but I can't identify them as yet. Thanks for reading and a special thank you for your valuable time. Chris Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353686

        • new site and virtual directory Hi, I am confused with new site and new virtual directory as I am reading the documentation from weblogic about how to use IIS with weblogic: "To proxy requests from multiple Websites (defined as virtual directories in IIS) to WebLogic Server: "............... what's the difference? Thanks Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353684

        • Frontpage Extensions (2000) and Restricted Groups Greetings, we have a Windows 2000 DC which was upgraded from NT4 running IIS 5.0. I have just recently configured restricted groups for trusts to other domains and since I have done that only users who are members of domain admins can logon to their frontpage enabled web site (for editing)? Can anybody tell me why this is so? Perhaps you could point me to some good documentation on Frontpage extensions. The Win2k resorce kit has very little information on properly deploying Frontpage! • Process Accounting Removal We have had Process accounting turned on for several years here. Are there any tools to remove the process accounting information from the log files? I have some 50,000 logs to do this too, manually seems not the way to go. Just checking before I script it. Thanks Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353675

        • Managing IIS in large scale enviroments I was wondering how do you admins that run large scale web farms that use IIS ,mange them? Right now we have 15+ web servers that we use. Each is basically a mirror of each other. When we need to replicate files, we use robocopy scripts. But sometimes it can be a pain in the rear when we need to distrubute dozens of different files in different directories. And sometimes we might need to add or remove a virtual site or directory and it becomes a pain staking task to replicate the change on our web servers. I was wondering, how do you guys go about managing your iis servers? Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353674

        • IIS Blocks Subsequent Requests of Same SessionID We have an IIS challenge that has been bothering us for some time now. Both in ASP and ASP.NET, if a client requests a page, lets say a query that takes about 30 seconds, all other requests are blocked JUST for that session UNTIL the first request is completed. Other clients can browse the site just fine. We turned off the session on that application space, and then it fixed the issue. Can somebody drop some knowledge on how to fix this? • 2 SERVERS, 2 WEB SITES, 1 IP I have two servers (W2k Sp4 w/ IIS 5.0 on each). Each server is running IIS. Each server has a WWW site setup. Server1 has the primary www site on it that is accessed via www users by entering our domain name. I want a virtual folder inside of IIS on Server2 to be accessable to all www users. For example: http://www.url.com is the address for Server1 http://www.url.com/IISDirOnServer2 is what I want all www users to be able to reach. Any suggestions on how to have Server1 IIS read the www pages from Server2? Thanks in advance... Jason Tag: IIS + ASP.NEt Tag: 353665

        • Funny Stuff in Regmon and Filemon Has anyone ever seen one of the following while monitoring a webserver? w3wp.exe:4224 OpenKey HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\ConnectTo NOTFOUND Or w3wp.exe:4224 OPEN C:\inetpub\wwwroot\Default.htm FILE NOT FOUND w3wp.exe:4224 OPEN C:\inetpub\wwwroot\Default.asp FILE NOT FOUND w3wp.exe:4224 OPEN C:\inetpub\wwwroot\index.htm FILE NOT FOUND The confusing part is on this webserver I am not using the default website. All the traffic I am generating is with a specific url and appears to be working fine. Also I do not have the SQL client installed nor am I using ODBC to connect to SQL server. • IIS 5.1 stopped working after hotfixes Alert? To ALL I had Windows XP Home Edition on my computer to find that it did not support IIS, so everyone said that I would be able to upgrade to Windows XP Pro and that failed badly. I had to reformat and start from scratch. I then installed IIS and I was able to do http://localhost I then continued to install the same software that I had on Home Edition. Several third party programs including Mcafee Security Center but I had that installed from the beginning and it was working. I did install Office XP downloaded sp3 and apply security fixes then SQL 2000 Developer SP3a last Frontpage 2003. I now get Cannot find server or DNS Error Internet Explorer I even placed an htm file and tried http://localhost/test.htm that also failed I thought I was going to be able to use IIS for my web developement and now I do not know why I wasted two days upgrading to XP Pro if IIS does not work. I stopped as many services as I could without shutting down xp but it still fails. Does anyone have an idea what I can do? I am at witts end and still up at 3:00 AM trying to get this bloddy thing to work. 1. World wide web publishing service is running 2. no proxy sever is not enabled in IE 3. Yes I use Mcafee antivirus and Mcafee Personal Firewall 4. http://127.0.0.1 does not work I can ping that address from a cmd prompt on my computer 5. I do not think it does just one network adapter is installed Any other ideas I also installed a lot of security fixes yesterday could that be a problem? I did have the antivirus and firewall installed and IIS was working. Here is what installed Update for Office 2003 French GRammer Checker KB873381 Office 2003 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Office XP Wordperfect Converter KB873379 Hotfixes KB885884 KB885836 KB885835 KB873339 KB834707 KB886185 KB890175 Any thoughts? • IIS hanging on .asp requests I've recently started having a problem with my server where it will hang/time-out on requests for any active server page. I can hit static .htm pages when this hang-up is occurring, but not a single .asp works. I figure there's some rogue .asp causing problems, but I can't figure out where. I downloaded IISState and THINK I have it working properly, but I've been unable to make anything out of it other than there are some really high times on some of the threads. If anyone can see anything in this that will help, I'd greatly appreciate the assistance.
