Hi,

A team is putting together an application running on II6 that uses mysql +
php. Someone suggested using Apache to host the application as it free.
Barring the fact I don't have much experience with Apache im finding it
difficult to justify running IIS6 because of the cost implications. Im far
more comfortable with IIS as I have far more experience with it but I could
probably delegate the project over to someone with Apache experience with
reduced cost - although it would have less control over the project.

Thanks for any advice
Ed.

Will you run it on Windows no matter if you use Apache or not? If you will
run it on Windows, there is no additional costs running IIS (unless you need
licenses for authenticated users).

Assuming you are running on Windows, there's no cost to IIS either.
Your suggestion may actually have been to run it on a free Unix clone
such as Linux or FreeBSD, using Apache as your web server.

I'm not sure what you're asking here. If you're asking my opinion,
then evaluate the systems and solutions based on your organization's
needs. Anything else is irresponsible. Just because I run IIS
doesn't mean you should, and just because Apache on Linux is free of
licensing costs doesn't mean you should run that either.

Good luck either way, and if you need the support in IIS feel free to
stop back.

Hi Ed,

I don't want to compare Apache with IIS. What I'd like to mention is:
Sometimes users don't notice when using Windows platform and IIS,
there are many integrated services may bring them some value added
benefits. For example: with IIS and Index service, we just need to
create a very simple .idq file and .htx template, then a full-text
search function like search.microsoft.com is implemented on the site:
How to Perform Static Queries
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnpro
asp2/html/howtoperformstaticqueries.asp
