[SURVEY] Webserver User Survey
Hi.
I am conducting a survey about what users want out of a webserver
and how the Apache webserver ranks as far as fulfilling those needs.
in order to get a better understanding of it, I thought I would ask you
guys what was important to you, and how you rate the Apache web server.
The survey should take about 10-15 minutes to complete.

IIS error - -2147417842 (0x80001010e)
Hi All
Can anyone please tell me what this error means? Our website is experiencing difficulties serving up ASP pages (IIS5 and IE5). The pages are definitley there, and if you refresh they will often display. We've restarted the service several times but over the period of a few hours the web pages start to 'break' more regularly.
The web pages use .asp code and xml. Any suggestions?

Removing Default SSL port
Hello everyone,
I am currenltly running a win2k sp4 box with iis installed. i am trying to
get something to work here that is a little out of standard practice. I am
trying to install Jakarta Tomcat in order to host some jsp servlets on the
same machine that is running IIS. I want this to be accessible to everyone,
however, i can not use port 80 since IIS is binded to that. I had this great
idea to remove the default SSL port 443 from the IIS configuration and use
that for the tomcat installation. Upon trying to do this, i can not
highlight the default SSL port in order to remove it.
Why would i like to do this? I would really prefer to use this port because
some system admins only allow certain connections through thier firewalls,
limiting only to destination ports 80 and 443.
Anyone have any ideas on how i can accomplish this, possibly through the
metabase? If not, any other ideas, aside from using an isapi redirector?
thanks in advance,

Instalation error
I am trying to install IIS on Windows 2000 Professional and I am having some
problems locating files.
First, I was asked for the SP4 files, which I supplied via a local folder
where I had extracted the SP4 files.
Second, it asked for some files from the Windows 2000 Professional cd-rom
disc. The file "iis_infoctrs.h" could not be found, however, and I could
progress no farther with the install.
Does someone know how I can work around this or find that file somewhere? Tag: IIS and RAM Tag: 364877
Site Traffic Reporting
I have seen various Web hosting services provide reports that summarize
traffic on their hosted Web sites (number of page requests - graphs, summary
stats, etc). I need to provide similar reports internally for an internal
company Web site (available only on our Intranet).
Where do I get started? I would appreciate any guidance on:
1. Are there things built into ASP.NET or IIS6 that would facilitate this
sort of reporting?
2. What are some recommended 3rd Party reporting tools made specifically for
this sort of reporting?

.CSV file does not open Excel
I have a mixture of IIS 5.0, 5.1, and 6.0 giving inconsistant results when
serving up a .csv page. Some of the servers are serving the page up and IE
will open Excel and the page lookes like a normal spreadsheet. Other servers
are loading the page as an HTML page, eventhough it has a .csv extension.
While the page looks OK as HTML, it is not formatted into columns and rows
to import into Excel. I have troubleshooted down to where it appears to be a
server setting. Is there a MIME setting that needs to be made if you want to
server a .csv page and have it opened as an Excel file within IE?

web folders http 405 error
Hey folks,
I can't seem to figure this one out and it recently cropped up, perhaps
as a result of some recent IE security updates. I have a web folder that I
am trying to access via a URL as <a href='https://domain/folder'
folder='https://domain/folder' target='_blank'>Folder</a> that has always
worked until recently. The webfolder opens just fine manually within IE, but
not with the href as folder=. Has something recent changed? Any way to fix
this?
Thanks,
Dave

Installing root certificate & chain
Please excuse my loose expression but I am not IIS & PKI specialist. I
need to establish SSL with root certificate from local CA. To do so, I
need to install the root certificate chain on the server, so the client
certificates can be accepted. I have the der encoded certificates in
*=2Eder files. When I step through the Server Certificate wizard in IIS,
Directory Security the options are:
- Create a new certificate
- Assign an existing certificate
- Import a certificate from a Key Manager backup file
If I choose the second options, the dialog lists the certificates in
the repository. Maybe I can add the certificates from the chain to this
repository?
If I choose the third option, I need to create a Key Manager backup
file. Is this possible? How can I start the Key Manager - I saw plenty
of topics about it, but I don't see an executable with this name. Is
this a separat=D0=B5 program? Or maybe I have to install MS Exchange - I
think it has a feature with that name.
Thaks all of you, I hope you can help me. Tag: IIS and RAM Tag: 364858

Problem: Delete Folder with IIS - Access Violation
Hi,
I am developing a Web Application, some parts of this application manage
folders on the web site.
When I send a DeleteFolder command (FileSystemObject) it succeeds and
deletes the folder, however, the IIS process (in my case w3wp.exe) keeps a
handle to this folder and actually does not allow re-creating the folder or
accessing it. (closing the handles manually or restarting IIS resolves
this).
Why does this happen, and how can I avoide this? these are not virtual
directories just folders located under the web site.

Inetinfo running at 100%
Hello,
I have a W2K server running the most currenty SP, with IIS installed (I have
this same configuration on 6 servers on a Citrix Farm). On one server, the
"inetinfo.exe" is running at 60-100% and causing terrible performance on that
system. When I shut off the SMTP services, everything works great. There is
no email in the que or any other of the mail folders in Inetpub.
I only have one customer who's data resides on this server. When I move that
customers .mdb file to another server, the problem moves with it! This
customer's data file, other than being larger than most, is the same as all
my other customer's files.
Is it possible that port 25 is somehow being hijacked? Could it be hijacked
through my customer's office somehow - someone relaying spam on my systems
through my customers network??? Any tools/utilities you can recommend to help
me track this problem down?
Thank you all for your help!

IIS system requirements and licensing
Hi,
I would like to enable IIS 6 on our Win 2003 server to develop ASP .NET
applications. Prior to this update, I would like to estimate the hardware
capacities used by ASP .NET and IIS 6.
So, I'd like to have figures on :
- How much memory and processor uses IIS 6 + ASP.NET without any active
connections
- What could be an order of (minimum/maximum) size for system usage (memory,
processor...) for around 30 users working with ASP .NET applications
(connection to SQL server 2000 databases).
Concerning licensing :
How works licensing for ASP .NET web applications? Is it the same as with
standard Windows applications?
Thanks a lot,

ADSI - IIS Admin Objects
I need to use the ADSI IIS Admin Objects to connect to IIS 5.x and IIS 6.x
servers and retrieve the configuration.
The problem is the Windows 2000 workstations that will be utilized do not
have the IIS Admin console, so the IIS ADSI provider is not available. The
end user does not have administrative rights to the machine and will not be
allowed to install the IIS console. WMI is not an option, as 5.x servers are
involved.
Is there a way for me to create a VB script that is essentially standalone,
and can be run from a workstation that does not have the IIS console? I'm
thinking that I might be able to include the appropriate .dll or other files
and reference them.
Any other command line tools or alternatives to report on an remote IIS
config?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Application pool shutdown - scheduled admin script reading metabase
We are having an issue with the application pool being disabled due to
rapid-fail protection. My best guess is that a routine admin script which
is supposed to walk the metabase and copy the previous day's logs to an
appropriately named folder on an archive box for stats, is locking the
metabase. So far, I have been unsuccessful at correcting the problem.
Basic situation is a stand alone shared hosting box set with each
customer's sites being set up in an account specific application pool.
(Might be more than one virtual server per application pool depending on the
customer.) The application pools are set to shutdown worker processes after
being idle 20 minutes. Some of the sites are just not very busy so they do
shut down.
And it is those which seem to be having the application pool failure. The
W3svc log for every one that has failed shows no activity for an extended
time. The System log shows Event ID 1009 five times in less than a second,
("A process serving application pool 'xxxxxxxx' terminated unexpectedly. The
process id was '1604'. The process exit code was '0xffffffff'.") and is then
followed by event 1002 shutting down the application pool. It looks like a
spider, script kiddie or random visitor timed their request perfectly so the
scheduled task was finishing.
Last night, the Application pool failures were 9:08:26PM to 9:08:27PM. The
scheduled task running the admin script started at 9:07:00 PM and was logged
off at 9:08:30PM. Actually, it should have been done by 9:07:09PM -- that
is when UPHClean logged an entry it had done cleanup. The script is using
ADSI, nothing really strange, nothing that should be changing the metabase.
But from the evidence of the crashing application pool, seems to be locking
the metabase anyway.
[section of code where it starts finding the sites -- just in case I am not
explaining this script adequately]
Set objW3SVC = GetObject("IIS://LOCALHOST/W3SVC")
'Walk through the metabase, and pick out web servers only.
For Each objSITE in objW3SVC
If objSITE.class = "IIsWebServer" Then
servNum = objSITE.name
For each port in objSITE.ServerBindings
I could not see anything in the documentation indicating that this should be
a concern. Can someone help and point me to relevant docs? Is there a
read-only way to do this. Or is this a bug with ADSI and IIS 6? Are there
alternatives that would avoid the locking?
Thanks.

SSL with IIS 6 and Microsoft Cert Server
I have installed IIS 6 and MS Cert Server on a Windows 2003 server. When I

get the prompt:

The security certificate has been issued by a company you have chosen not to
trust. View the certificate to determine whether you want to trust the
certifying authority.
---
If I view the certificate and go through the wizard to install it in the
"Trusted Root Certificate Authorities" I will still get prompted every time
I visit my secured web page. If I go back to my IE clients and check my
installed certificate, my certificate from my IIS site is not under the TRCA
group or any other group.
I know that I can install certificates on my clients without a problem form
other sites because I see a bunch of new ones from other CAs. I have tried
this from Win2000, XP, and 98 clients and none of them seem to be able to
just install this certificate.

Http Posting Issue
Hello,
We are performing an Http synchronous post using the msxml4.dll (sp2) on
WinXP client machines to post information to a Windows 2003 server using asp.
We have been very successful using this method and have had no issues with
this configuration until recently. There are two issue that we are
experiencing on various machines
1. Workstation will post but then hang and not return.
2. Workstation will post but return 3 - 3 1/2 minutes later with a message
"The download of the specified resource has failed."
On the server side in the IIS logs we see a corresponding http 400 entry
with zero bytes sent and an sc-win32-status code of 64 which indicates (The
specified network name is no longer available). We also know that these posts
have been processed on the backend but fail to make it back to the client.
I have to believe that this is a network related issue and am having trouble
determining where to look. My questions are:
I have read that Http 400 errors refer to a client side problem or network
related issue. Is this true ?
Could this condition occur under high volume or network staturation at the
client site ?
How can we go about debugging what the root cause is ?
If someone could answer my questions and/or provide some feedback I would
greatly appreciate it. Tag: IIS and RAM Tag: 364779

Are you participating in the IIS Debugging Week?
The demand for a dedicated presentation on IIS debugging has been high for
years. The IIS Webcast Series is going to deliver with a special week long
presentation entitled - IIS Debugging Week. This is a great time for many
IIS administrators and developers because Microsoft has spent two years
architecting, designing, and implementing a touch all tool in the debugging
space - welcome to the debugging party called Debug Diagnostics 1.0.
Last week at TechEd 2005 in Orlando, FL, the developer of Debug Diagnostics
1.0 delivered a compelling and very well received presentation on how Debug
Diagnostics 1.0 might just be the future to debugging IIS (and other
products) crashes, hangs, and memory leaks. He didn't only back this up
with slides outlining critical points in each type, but he showed them in
action and how Debug Diagnostics 1.0 will save days, if not hours, solving
complex web application problems.
In this debugging week, the design team will participate and take your key
feedback on how they can make this tool even strongerl for you. It isn't a
tool designed just for this platform or that platform but is designed to
resolve key problems across all IIS platforms: 4, 5, 5.1, and 6.0. The
debugging world will begin to understand how DebugDiag can make there lives
easier and how extensibility is the key to this tool moving Microsoft in the
right direction with product support. It would be great to see all of you
there next week asking questions, learning about Debug Diagnostics, and more
importantly providing feedback on this tool that the IIS team feels is the
answer to many customer's "prayers."
Let's talk about customer feedback at TechEd 2005 -
"It was a shame that presenters ran out of time before showing final demo
on DiagDebg tool; however, i am looking forward to future releases,
webcasts, labs, etc."
"Excellent Presentation!!!"
"Debug Diagonistics looks like a great tool, cannot wait to start using
it."
"Excellent presentation on what looks to be an exciting new tool that
will allow admins to debug IIS."
"I can't wait to use this product on my servers! I know this will save me
so much time troubleshooting production issues that this session made
tech-ed worth it for me."
This is only a snapshot of the feedback given by the 800+ in attendance at
this breakout session. Your opinion counts, make sure that you have
downloaded the tool, fired up your server, and are listening diligently on
Monday and not stopping until Friday and provided your opinion on how
Microsoft can make your life easier and your day more efficient!

WMI Script Error - No Such Interface Supported
We are using iisapp.vbs (c:\windows\system32) to execute AppPool recycles via

set nodeObj = refWMIServices.Get("IIsApplicationPool='W3SVC/AppPools/" &
apoolID & "'")
nodeObj.Recycle
Error is "SWbemObjectEx: No such interface supported"
This must be a server-specific configuration, as the other servers work just
fine. However, I am at a loss as to what to check.
Any ideas? Tag: IIS and RAM Tag: 364770

The World Wide Web Publishing Service service terminated unexpectedly. It
has done this 25 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in

I am also getting the same error for smtp service and iis admin, they are

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IIS Cache Problems
I have a customer who is having problems with his ASP pages serving a updated
page when he makes updates to it. No other customers on the webserver have
problems. To give a short example of the issue here is what happens:
The page gets updated and when he clicks to view the updates he still sees
the oringinal content. If he clicks on the refresh button then the updated
content appears. I have been through many different articles on the
Microsoft site dealing with Caching issues on IIS 6.0 and have had no luck
with any. The only thing I can find that is almost exactly what is happening
requires a phone call to get a hot fix. Has anyone ever used this and do you
know if it will work, and is there a charge? The link is

Direct Metabase Edit
What can be changed in the Metabase using Direct Metabase Edit that
will be picked up immediately on saving the file? So far the only
thing I have found that will actually work is changing the location of
a redirect for a resource. Is there a list somewhere of what changes
are actually supported in this way?
TIA,

IIS uninstall
I uninstalled IIS from a Windows 2000 Server, as there was no need for IIS to
be on it. Uninstall caused explorer.exe to stop, so desktop icons & taskbar
disappeared.
There were no other programs running during the uninstall, and I was able to
go into Task Manager, New Task and start explorer, bringing the desktop back
and the server is running fine, however I havn't rebooted.
I've searched google for any clue as to what would cause this but coming up
empty handed. Does anyone have an idea what happened?
(Server has up-to-date virus definitions, daily scan, no problems there).
Thanks in advance. Tag: IIS and RAM Tag: 364744

Anonymous remote database calls
Prior to SP2 for XP our application was able to launch remote query to an
access database through IIS in a non domain environment. Now all we get is
'Access Denied'. We've allowed all access permissions and have 'Execute
includes Scripts' for application permissions. As far as security we have
always used 'Intergrated Windows Authentication' on all the computers. Most
if not all of our users logon with no passwords and all have Admin rights.
Have played around with Firewall settings and RCL permissions, but nothing
seems to do the trick. Does anybody know what kind of changes SP2 for XP
might have changed? Tag: IIS and RAM Tag: 364737
Installed IIS first time ever
Just installed IIS on a WinXP Pro machine, and I can not get any ASP pages to
show, and that includes the ASP help files. HTML shows up fine but nothing
else. .NET is installed both 1.1 and 2.0. SP2 is installed as well as all
latest Updates.
I ma familiar with Coldfusion server, so I have a decent idea on how web
servers work, I am not sure what the deal is.

Hi,
Someone knows if there is an utility to monitor the ram used by IIS or
