    - Slow AD query Hi there, I'm creating a little application that between other things will get the logged user information and will do a AD query to get his distinguishedName attribute but that query is taking too long (about 8 seconds).     - Interop problems using VFP 6.0 and Framework 2.0 beta Hi All, There is a incompatibility between VFP 6 and Dotnet 2.0. we have a VFP class called message.dll, initially this was compiled in VFP 6.0 we did the folowing 1) use regsvr32 "message.dll" and register on client machine 2) used tlbimp message.tlb /out:messageDotnet.dll to convrt it to a dotnet DLL the above two steps gave no problems We then referenced the messageDotnet.dll class from dotnet 2.0 and whenever we executed the code it returned the following error "user-interface operation not allowed at this time". the funny thing was that when we tried to reference the original VFP 6.0 dll i.e "message.dll" from vb 6.0 it didnt throw any error. Now on a hunch we RE-compiled the VFP message.dll using VFP 7.0 and re-added it to the Dotnet solution, after recompiling as outlined in the steps 1 and 2; and Viola there was no problem and all worked fine What is this weird behaviour about, please enlighten us !!!!     - Code runs with breakpoint, but without bPoint gives StackOverflowE Okay, I have this app. On load it runs an initialization routine on an unmanaged .dll. The code has a button. The handler calls a function 'FillCameras'. If I put a breakpoint at that line (Call FillCameras) the code runs fine, even if I don't walk through the code after that. It seems to just need to pause. I can then remove the breakpoint and click the button as much as possible, and it fires as expected. If I do not have a breakpoint at that line, or any other line, and let the button fire on it's own, I get: An unhandled exception of type 'System.StackOverflowException' occurred in mscorlib.dll Any ideas?     - Visual Studio Functionality We're having a bit of a quandary at my office and this seems to be the perfect place to get the answer and perhaps some clarification. Currently, the "official" architecture for my organization is J2EE. It is my understanding that the .NET framework serves essentially the same purpose and that it exists as part of the operating system in Windows. In the past there have been a number of applications developed in either MS Access or Visual Basic. Many of these may never be converted to Java and it certainly won't happen anytime soon. As a result, some people are asking for newer versions of Visual Basic (i.e. .NET) in order to maintain and improve these existing applications. Is it possible to use Visual Studio and only develop "straight" VB code that does not use the framework (this has been specifically prohibited by upper management)? Do all versions of Visual Studio give you access to the framework or only the enterprise versions? If all versions give you access is it possible to determine if/when you are using the framework?     - System.Web.Mail Transport Error This question falls into the category..."nothin a reboot won't fix"... The exception I receive is as follows: "The message could not be sent to the SMTP server. The transport error code was 0x800ccc14. The server response was not available." If I want the exception to stop occurring (for a while), I just reboot the machine that the app and SMTP Service is running on. Note that SMTP Service start and stop does not help. Please note that I never know how long the app will run until the error occurs sometimes 1 hour, sometimes 8 hours.     - Code generation for array of components Hello all, I am trying to create a custom component which contains an array of another custom component. A property is added to wrap the array - this allows .NET's built-in property editor to provide a comfortable means to populate and edit the array. The problem I have run into is that after all this is done, the array itself is never generated into code and all the created objects simply spill onto the form as well - which can be a problem because of the size of the array I would like to create. I would prefer not writing a custom editor and code generator because I think .NET should have all I need, I just need to figure out how to control it. Hopefully this example might clarify what I am trying to do. Assume I create a new component, and add the following code to it: ************************** private System.Timers.Timer[] tarray=null; public System.Timers.Timer[] TArray { get { return tarray; } set { tarray=value; } } *********************** Now, after I compile the class and add it to the toolbar and drop an instance of the component onto my main form, it has a TArray property. I can click on this property's ellipsis button ("...") and populate this property with timer objects. As I do this, 2 problems occur: 1 - when I'm done and click OK, the array is never created in code - it remains null regardless of any editing that occurs - so the next time I edit my object's TArray it is empty again 2 - the timer objects are created, but apart from the array and they appear separately in the form editor In this example, I would still like to be able to create timer objects outside the TArray property and have them appear on the form - only timer objects which are created inside the array should not appear separately.     - problem moving console appliation to send email to server I created a console application using .net to email information out on a monthly basis. My problem is this. It works from my pc and anyone else with the visual studio .net, but not from the web server. Was i supposed to do anything else other than build my solution and copy my exe to that server.     - Monitor class not working as specified Hi! I have trouble with the Monitor class. I did some troubleshooting and finally figured out the problem. The thing is, the Monitor class simple does not work as specified. Better said, if used by the framework through lock( obj ) statements it works fine, however if used through Monitor.Enter( obj ) and Monitor.Exit( obj), deadlocks can occur. Here is a simple example that shows this behavior. If the example is run as specified everything is fine. If the lock statements are commented, and Enter & Exit statements uncommented deadlock occurs. Why this happens? .NET framework help specifies that this should be the same. I found in the help, that Monitor maintains Waiting and Ready queues of threads for each object, but I haven't found the clear explanation of the meanings of this queues.     - Problem converting OLE Metafile to Bitmap I'm having issues converting a metafile into a bitmap. The metafile is the presentation data stripped from an OLE object. The OLE headers have been stripped off and what appears to be the MetafilePict header has also been stripped off. The metafilepict header, though, contains all of the sizing information (which I need) in order to keep the resultant bitmap the same size as the original presentation metafile. When I try to force the metafile into the given size, the resultant bitmap always looks as if the text within it has been scaled down (and so the bitmap text looks nothing like the original presentation of the OLE object.) This only seems to affect the text. More complex objects (with graphs, etc), seem to translate OK. I've tried numerous different methods for converting the files , none of which seem to work. From basic ideas like: Image i = Image.FromStream(fs); Bitmap b = new Bitmap(i, new Size(pictInfo.xExt, pictInfo.yExt)); // gives correct size, but text is sized incorrectly To more complex ones using hardware device contexts, sizing rectangles for the metafile, etc. Nothing seems to make the text size come out right (or in the case of the hardware device context -- not at all. I'm sure I've got issues there.) Is there an easier way to: 1) maintain the correct text size in the metafile to bitmap conversion? 2) dump the metafile to some other graphic? -or- the point of this entire exercise 3) dump the presentation data of an OLE object (as it appears in the application) to a file that can be viewed (jpeg, bitmap, tiff)?     - Application Icon In a VB.net project's property pages you can set the application's icon using <ProjectName> Property Pages -> Common Properties -> Build -> Application Icon. This allows you to choose any icon that is already within the project (or you can add a new icon to the project from an existing file and choose it automatically). But all my icons are stored in one central "resources" project which is used by many other "code" projects. I don't really want to copy and duplicate the icons from the resource project into the code projects because this will give my a maintenance headache if any of the icons change.     - Compiled Regex in 1.1 & 2.0 Hi, I had a problem with a rather complex regex expression that didn't return the same results in 1.1 and 2.0. I first thought that I could make a utility assambly that referenced the 1.1 version of mscorlib and the use that from the 2.0 application. But that didn't work so I drew the conclusion that the problem was the runtime. That was wrong. I've compiled the regular expression in 1.1 into a physical assembly using Regex.CompileToAssembly and it works fine when referenced from the 2.0 application. The problem seems to be the actual parsing of the regular expression in 2.0. I don't know what goes wrong, but I now have a working workaround so I'll let it drop. Now I'm just wondering if somebody at Microsoft would like to pick it up to ferret out the possible cause.     - C# and VB.NET Why does C# seem to get more "play" in the .NET world? Don't both of these languages compile to the same IL language. I know both languages has its own little features; but when I look at job postings I get concerned when I see verbage like "C# is a Must".     - Unsafe code: Converting "byte *" to "[] byte" I've converted "[] byte" to "byte *" at times, using 'unsafe' and fixed { .... }, but the reverse does not seem to work. In this case, a C++ DLL returns a byte * and a length. What is the best way to convert these to straight C#-compatible straight "[] byte" arrays? PS: The C++ DLL is actually managed and I have access to the source. Perhaps there is a simpler syntax for doing the conversion there, and returning a C# compatible array rather than a pointer?     - Dataset.Merge Concurency Violation I am using SqlClient and OleDbClient classes to copy data from an msaccess db to a sql server db. These two dbs have the same structure.I want the changes that have occured in the records in the msaccess db to be updated to the sql server db. I am loading data from a table in msaccess into a dataset(dsSrc) and loading the same table from SQl Server into another dataset(dsDest). then i am calling the dsDest.merge method to merge the changes in the two datasets. i'm using hosting service and want to query the windows 2003 version at
runtime and output it to the response (asp.net)
how can this be done? (web edition etc)

is there behaviot defferences i might expect from different version of
windows 2003 server? i experience a problem with the code validatior add to
the result HTML, and want to search for the difference source.
i use XP Pro for dev and windows 2003 hotsing for production.
and the code the framework generates in the HTML have differences.
what might be the source for that?
