    - Threadpool and Sockets Hi All, I don't know in which group my question needs to be posted so here i go: I know that the socket 'begin...' methods uses the threadpool to call the callback function but does that mean that the sockets can't handle more than 25 concurrent 'begin...' methods that complete since the threadpool only has 25 threads to process the completion?     - UserControls in a different directory I have my UserControls in a subdirectory called usercontrols. However, when I open the page, the Response.Write() and Debug.Write() lines both output 'images/bannerad.jpg' but the value that gets assigned to lnkAdvertisement.ImageUrl is 'usercontrols/images/bannerad.jpg'. Why is a different value being returned by Me.Page.ResolveClientUrl(value)? My main goal is to make the paths I pass when using the UserControl to be treated as relative to the path of the Page containing the UserControl, not the path of the UserControl. What should I do?     - Using ASP.NET 2.0's ImageMap Control I am using ASP.NET 2.0's ImageMap Control to create 2 imagemaps, one directly below the other. When I do this a thin blank space appears between them. After several days of frustration I realized that the difference between what the ImageMap Control outputs and the html on the page I was trying to reproduce with ASP.NET 2.0 was the following: Handwritten HTML imagemaps (no whitestrip between them): <table> <tr> <td> <img/><br/> <map> <area/> </map> <img/><br/> <map> <area/> </map> </td> </tr> </table> ASP.NET 2.0 generated HTML using the ImageMap Control (whitestrip appears between the two ImageMaps): <table> <tr> <td> <img/> <map> <area/> </map> <img/> <map> <area/> </map> </td> </tr> </table> In case you didn't see it, the difference is that the handwritten HTML includes a <br/> between the <img/> and <map> tags. However, this is not achievable (at least not using any technique I can think of) using the ASP.NET 2.0 ImageMap Control. What can I do?     - Serious Socket Programming Problems hello, I just started working with this class at the low level and am having issues. 1) I am instantiating a StreamReader and feeding my NetworkStream to its constructor. the bytes that the StreamReader reads from the server are perfect. however the StreamReader never stops reading / listening! even after the last byte has been received! it just keeps blocking and freezing my client app. does anyone know why this is and what can be done about it? 2) as a workaround to 1), I am parsing the server response to find the last byte. when I do I manually stop the StreamReader. is this really a "workaround" or is it basically what the System.Web.HttpRequest object does behind the scenes? 3) using the process described in 2) my client runs fine - but only in debug mode. in release mode the server response is empty. this seems to be due to bad code.     - Single Sign On / Authentication System? Hi all, I'm looking to implement a single sign on solution for .NET applications. This single sign on solution will need to work against a variety of back- end databases (i.e. SQL (mainly), Active Directory (some), Custom Data Sources (XML, MDB, Custom Web Service, etc). Is there any sample code on implementing a simple single sign on service? The app would need: -Log in Users from the web, desktop clients, custom applications, etc. -Have granular permissions -Be compatible with other web services, desktop apps, and remoting (basically any sort of client/server) -Have the ability to add trusted sites (i.e. servers, viewer consoles, etc) -Work with .NET 1.1 (most of our apps are still 1.1) I was thinking of doing the following: 1. Build a security web service 2. Users would log into a web service to retrieve a token 3. Once a token is retrieve, it is used for all future communications 4. Applications check security against the security service via the Token i.e.: CheckPermission(ByVal Token as GUID, ByVal Permission as String) as Boolean 5. The Web Service would manage a list of valid tokens (time outs, errors, etc) Ecryption would be done primarily on the transport layer - but the token could be encrypted too. What do you guys think about this solution? It's simple... However, how do you handled "trusted" sources?     - Change password giving errors Hi This is my third question today. Seems like I have run into some problems with AD. I am using the native IADsUser interface to change the password. IADsUser dsUser = DirectoryEntry.NativeObject as IADsUser dsUser.ChangePassword(old, new); The password gets changed. Alls fine till there. The trouble comes when I login again. If I use the old password, the error I get is "The server is not operational", instead of a "Logon failure " message. Instead If i use a random string like "abc" to login, I get a correct error "Logon failure". Can anyone tell me how to fix the former case.     - .NET Runtime Optimization Service causing Web Service to stop responding?? I'm hoping somebody out there can help me. I have developed a web service in C#.Net 2.0 and have it running on a Windows 2003 Server (Standard Edition).     - Question abt Password Expiry Hi I have to implement password expiry in my application, in the same way as Windows does it. If a user's password at Active Directory is expired or reset, a window is displayed that allows him to change his password. The problem is that if password has expired, then DirectoryEntry.Invoke("ChangePassword", new object[]{old, new}) throws an exception with the message "Logon Failure: Incorrect user id or password." Another complication is that I cannot pass the passwords in cleartext. Do let me know what can be done about this.     - Error decoding ISO character 147 Hi I have a byte-array, in which one of the bytes has the value 149 (hex95) which represents a dot ( ? ). The same character has the unicode value of 8226 (hex 2022) But when I try to decode the byte-array into a string, that character is not converted into the correct value. If I use the following code: byte[] b = new byte[] { 147 }; char[] c = System.Text.Encoding.GetEncoding("ISO-8859-1").GetChars(b); c now contains the character value 147 - which is an illegal unicode value. What am I doing wrong (actually asp.net is doing it wrong as well, because if I enter that character in a text-field, then the wrong value is stored in the database.     - Interesting problem with SmtpClient in background thread I'm experimenting with the SmtpClient class in c# and I have run into a knotty problem. I'm using the ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem to queue a delegate which creates an SmtpClient and attempts to send an email. Basically, If I try and create a new SmtpClient object in a thead managed by the threadpool the application exits without an exception being thrown/caught. However, if I create an SmtpClient in the main program the pooled thread can create the SmtpClient but it then blows up trying to send an email.... Anyone got any ideas.....     - RSA 1024 Bit Decryption with *.Pem Key Hi guys, We have created a key pair (privKey.pem, pubKey.pem) with OpenSSL as our partner requested (they use this format). They encrypted a string with our public key and then base64 encoded the string. We want to use Visual Studio.net 2003 to base64 decode the string, and then decrypt the string with the private key (*.pem format). It seems that VS.Net uses xml keys for this natively.     - searching byte arrays and RTFreaders Hi Does anyone know of a .net technique that can quickly find a particular byte value within a byte array and return its position, much as instr does for strings in VB.NET? I'm writing my own custom RTFreader by having my class inherit the .NET System.IO.BinaryReader. My goal is to have a stream reader available in .NET that returns the text portion of an RTF file stream - less any formatting. Being a binary reader, my custom reader loads n-bytes into a byte array. It then loops through this array and only returns qualifying bytes to the calling routine. Some RTF files contain embedded graphics and objects, and these can be made up of hundreds of kilobytes of data. When my custom reader encounters one of these blocks, it spends alot of time looping through the object's bytes just to bypass them. This can cause a significant delay for my reader to return from a call. To speed things up, I thought I could calculate the offset to the end of a block. Each object and graphic in an RTF file is described by a \pict or \object group. These also have tags that describe the object's dimensions. I thought I could take the dimensions, multiply them together and divide that by 255 (because the object data is byte-64 encoded) and multiply by two (because each encoded byte is represented by two hex digits - A5, EF, FF etc) to give me the length of the RTF file's encoded block. This would have worked, except that the width and height dimensions in the RTF file are in twips and not pixels. So, I'm back to looping through the byte array to find the delimiter that marks the end of a block. Is there a facility in .NET that can perform this search at machine language speed and return the location of the found byte? When using 'Refactor-->Encapsulate Field', I'd like to have an option for the references not to be updated anywhere in the project. It would be very useful for me (and probably others too) because I use this feature to generate my properties from my member variables. So I type all my member variables and then take them one by one and encapsulate them... When the project is small it's quick and efficient, but when the project becomes bigger it can take many seconds and sometimes minutes because it searches in all the assemblies of the solution to update the reference to a private variable that is not used anywhere because I just created it. Moreover, it would be nice to take a block of member variables and tell Visual studio to encapsulate them all. It would save a lot of time (and money too).     - Problem with timeout in TransactionScope Hello, I'm porting my application from ServicedComponents to TransactionScope objects. One of the most fun features of new tech is that it allows transaction timeouts more then 10 minutes. My application has many layers and using SqlTransactions is not convinient. As I undestand if TransactionScope is created with TimeSpan.Zero timeout then transaction manager doesn't control transaction time. But actually the transaction is aborted after 10 minutes timeout set in Machine.config. It is true for both SQL 2000 & SQL 2005. If transactions were created explicitly via CommitableTransaction class, this limitation didin't appear ( but only for SQL 2005, SQL 2000 transaction still were aborted ). After explanation of System.Transaction code via Reflector utility I found that TransactionScope always checks timeout via TransactionManager.ValidateTimeout method while CommittableTransaction doesn't. I guess the the problem can be resolved by changing maximalTimeout in machine.config but it is not applicable in the concrete case. I'm wondering is such behavior of TransactionScope designed?     - GC problem with large object - .net 1.1 Hello, I have an applications witch works with bitmaps. Such bitmaps are in windows (forms) sizeable. Each time it is neccary to allocate new bitmap with any size-step, because the bitmap is generated. So there is the following situation under .net 1.1 If the window (bitmap) is sized for exampel 10 bitmaps are generated and disposed in 2 seconds. Because the GC does not make garbage collection directly, this costs 10 MB ram instead of 1. If it is exreme, an application which needs realy 10 MB - you see in the taskmanager 50 MB. But this is the first layer of the problem. Now some time later, maybe the GC makes a garbace collection. Now GC-Memory has 10 MB used and 40 MB free. BUT the GC does not give the memory back to the system. (sometimes GC gives a little back to the system, but not all). Means: for a long time you see 50 MB RAM resources used in the tasks manger, what is not the reality, it's only 10 MB. This problem is very hard, because customers see this in the task manager und do not buy the product. So question: Is there any way under dot net 1.1 (.net net 2.0 is absolute impossible in the moment because of many reasons), to reduce the shown used Memory, which is wrong in the taskmanager for this app. Means is it possible to solve the problem when the bitmap is sized that memory is not accumulated, because with each new bitmap the old is disposed. I think there will be no solution under .Net / C#, but would be fine. But also a solution using C++ / unmanged code would be nice. (for the allocation of memory of the bitmaps only). when I tried to stop IIS Admin manually, I get this

Coukd not stop IIS Admin Service on Local computer
Error 1053: The service did not Respond to the Start or Control in a timely
fashion.

So I manually disable the World Wide Web & SMTP, rebooted
but SMTP still shows up in IIS Admin's list..... SMTP is showing
"stopping" but for 10 mins?

Any suggestions? Oh and I'm no longer able to launch IIS Admin (which I
use to be able to BEFORE installing service pack 2 ..... knew that was a
baaaad idea)

Try to repair .net framework. Then stop IIS, and uninstall FW
afterwards.
