    - Cancel Constructor (Me = Nothing) Hi, Most of my Objects have a constructor like this "Public Sub New(ID as Integer)". But when this ID isn't valid, I end up with an instantiated object, that doesn't contain values. Is there a way to kind of cancel the constructor when it detects that there isn't an object with this ID? The main reason is that I like to test on: "MyObject Is Nohting", but in these case is isn't nothing, but doesn't contain any values...     - Configuration problem depending on startup method Hi all, This is a little in-depth, so bear with me. I have a client application that uses the MS Config App block. Everything works as expected under normal circumstances and the ConfigManager is able to read items without problem when simply running the app. Here's the issue. We have also entered a registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\<MyAppName>\shell\open\command" that allows us to go to the IE address bar and type "MyAppName:<someargumentInfo>" and have it find our app. Problem is, when the application is started from this method, the Config Manager is unable to read any config data. It's confounding. My thought is that it's because the App starts out in the IE process, that the Framework isn't finding the App.Config file. When the App starts out in it's own process, all is good.     - windows app to retrieve data from asp.net I have an ASP.NET Web App that generating some files in realtime and it does a bunch of other processing stuff. The user then will launch a desktop Windows App to print the files that were generated from the ASP.NET Web App. According to my research I have to either use activex or there is not way to automatically download some files from the Web App to the user local machine. (I'm told Activex is out of the question.) I then decided to pull the files from the server. I've used the WebClient and there is a DownloadFile method which allows me to download files from the server to the local machine programmatically without user interaction. However, the file name is dynamic and generated in realtime. Is there a way that I can at least transfer or pass a string or variable from the ASP.NET to the Windows App or vice versa?     - Hi, how do I create a partial trusted sandbox of an embedded scripting Hi, I'd love to enable the writing of custom scripts by users. The main purpose is to do smart merge tags for a mail merge. Each such smart merge subroutine will add an additional dimension in transforming the looked-up substitution value. For example, one such sub routine would derive a suitable default naturalized salutation in Spanish when the looked-up value is a DBNull. It would be nice to cache and host the scripting engine and serve the execution via web services. The web service would take script snippets matching a certain call signature. Verify it * doesn't try to get out of the sandbox; * makes use of a small selection of safe libraries; * enjoys completion within a certain amount of time, free of infinite loops The web service would then pre-compile the snippet and cache it for calling on the fly. Script updates would prompt recompiles. The web service will then field directives to call these subroutines. These web service calls will provide the parameter values. The web service is then responsible for loading the embedded scripting engine environment, calling the script, and then returning the value. The web service may cache the scripting environment to eliminate unnecessary initialization. I have been made aware that we should investigate CRL concepts such as AppDomains with partial trust domains. And to study recent articles embedding IronPython into MDbg. But has anyone had to do something like this? With IronPython or another scripting language engine? Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated, thank you ahead of time!     - Click Once - Additional actions on file download Hello all. I have an application that will be deployed remotely on tablet pc's. It uses SQL Server Express for storing it's data. I am planning on deploying the application using click once but I need to make sure first that it provides me with certain features I cannot live without: I need to be notified every time a new application file is downloaded so that I can perform some custom actions. For example, I keep the database schema definition in an xml file. Whenever the schema changes, a new xml file will be distributed to the clients. When this file is downloaded by a client, it must be provided to a SchemaUpdater class which will handle the uprade of the database schema.     - hosting controls in IE, best practice for disposing of memory? Hi, I'm currently looking into an issue I've noticed with the .Net framework and hosting controls in IE. We have a webpage which has 2 frames, the topbar frame hosts a .Net control that acts as a client and talks to a server. The bottom frame hosts various java views and some .Net views to display the information in the client control. I noticed whilst debugging that when the page is moved from one view(control) to another the old one is still running in memory, in the background, I saw this by some debug traces that were still in the code. it appears that when the page changes it doesn't actually dispose of the controls but just disposes of their Handles. Thus all arrays of data etc stored in them sit there gobbling memory. Take for instance, initially IExplore process before a "view" is loaded consumes approx 40mb with the topbar .Net client loaded... I then load up one of my biggest controls/views and this jumps to around 85mb, I then switch to a java view, which is another webpage, and it drops to about 83mb... hardly any memory recovered what so ever... Once I realised this was happening I overrode OnHandleDestroyed and cleared out my arrays, and regained a lot of the memory, down from 85mb to about 60mb... So my question is, is there some documentation somewhere about this? Best practise for disposing of .Net controls hosted in IE, as they consume memory when really they should be disposed and the garbage collector (or whatever it's called in .Net) be regaining almost all the memory.     - Problem with DirectorySearcher.FindAll() Hi, I have a method which retrieves all users from Active Directory 2000. The problem is that i don't get all the users but only 1000 users. I've changed the search query limit from the AD itself to 20000 - via the Group Policy and verified also in the registry as instructed from this site http://www.petri.co.il/active_directory_search_limit.htm. But still that didn't help, i still get 1000 users in my search query (i've also restarted the AD machine).     - BadImageFormatException on framework 64 bit My application uses a win32 DLL (unmanaged code) and it works well with .net framework 32 bit. Now I'm testing it with .net framework 64 bit on a pc with windows XP 64 bit and as soon as the application start I get this error when the program load the win32 dll: System.BadImageFormatException: An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.     - Invalid postback or callback argument Hi all, I know this question has been posted all over the place, but it doesn't look like there are any definative answers, especially for the scenario I am using. I have a site with a masterpage. In the header of the masterpage, there is a text box with a search button. This button adds the value of the text box to the session state and then forwards the user to the search page. The search page inserts this value into the text attribute of another text box and runs a site search against the MS index service based on the text of this second text box on the webserver and populate a datagrid with a template column with the results. This is, I think, a fairly standard site search scenario. When doing one or two searches from the header, everything functions fine. After the third or fourth time though, I get the famous "Invalid postback or callback argument" error message. I have tried turning eventvalidation off in the web.config, although I would rather keep it on. I also tried manually registering the buttons for eventvalidation in the render methods of the pages.     - Issue with multiple GUI threads on .NET 1.1 Hello! I am writing a desktop application that uses multiple GUI threads to interact with the user. Secondary GUI thread creates a main form for this thread, having application's main form as its parent and calls System.Windows.Forms.Application.Run() with this newly created form. The problem is that, under certain conditions (described below) secondary GUI thread strangely crashes after it has exited the 'threadstart' function. The crash is 'Unhandled access violation exception' (0xc000000a) in ntdll.dll with the following call stack: ntdll.dll!_RtlFreeThreadActivationContextStack@0() + 0x1eda4 kernel32.dll!_ExitThread@4() + 0x39 kernel32.dll!_BaseThreadStart@8() + 0x3d My environment is .NET 1.1, Microsoft Windows XP SP2. Condition for crash is that thread crashes only after I create and display a modal dialog box (another custom form), heaving main form for GUI thread #2 as Parent. This dialog box is used to display messages to the user instead of System.Windows.Forms.MessageBox (it has enhanced functionality like "Don't show this anymore" checkbox and timeout timer allowing it to be dismissed if user haven't clicked any buttons. When I switch back to System.Windows.Forms.MessageBox everything is fine. As this issue occurs in a big solution, I created new simple little CrashTest Project to isolate and simulate this behavior, but so far I haven't succeeded.     - System.DirectoryServices and WinNT provider I am trying to clean up the remnants of an old NT4 domain and am trying to create a DirectoryEntry object referring to an NT4 group via the WinNT provider. That part works fine, but I cannot find a way to get the membership of the group. The same kind of operation works fine on members of an AD group via the AD LDAP provider.     - Unable to get service to install automatically with custom actions I have not been able to determine why my installer package will not execute the custom actions that create the windows service when my service is installed. I even stuck a service notification message in the ProjectInstaller code and see nothing to indicate it is being executed. For my development environment I am using Visual Studio 2003 with the .Net Framework 1.1. I on Windows XP Professional. I currently have all Windows patches installed except for the .Net 2.0 framework. If I compile the service and manually run InstallUtil then the service is created and can be run successfully. That's how I tested the service. This does NOT seem to utilize the ProjectInstaller class within the executable; it works with or without this code. If I run the msi from the compiled installation project then the program itself is installed but, as far as I can tell, there is no attempt to register the service. There is only one service in the project. I created the ProjectInstaller.cs for my service and it has everything I would expect to be there including adding the ServiceProcessInstaller and ServiceInstaller to the Installers object. Each of the 4 tasks in the Custom Actions points to the primary output of the service. Each has the InstallerClass property set to True. I noticed that each of the custom actions actually uses the obj directory for the source instead of the bin directory but I don't know if this is normal. The service executable has the startup object set to the entry point. There is a file called servicename.InstallState in the install directory after the install that I don't recall seeing in past projects. It has SOAP code in it.     - Form resource files Hi there. I apolgize for posting this again (from June 2nd) but I've been researching for many days now with no success. I have an app that will be reading arbitrary ".resx" or "resources" files passed on the command line for instance. Given only a resource file IOW, does anyone know: 1) How the app can determine if the passed resource file contains (localized) form resources (i.e., it stores a form) 2) If it does contain (localized) form resources, how can I then generate that form dynamically Note that the native .NET utility "Winres.exe" is able to do this but I can't figure out how (not without using techniques that appear to be undocumented).     - Remove unused methods and properties from the assemblies. Hi, My application is splitted into more than one assembly. And I want to clean up the methods which are not called or not used among any of the assemblies. And also I want to remove the code for those methods which are not called in any of my assemblies. 1) I want to remove all methods (either private, protected, internal or public) methods which are not called (invoked) among any of my assemblies. 2) If public access modifier is not required for that method then I want to make it either internal of protected which ever is applicable. 3) If no method is overridden in the derived classes which are marked as virtual in base classes then I want to remove the virtual keyword from the method signature in the base class. It will be great if any one suggests me the tool which does all of tasks and it will be great if that tool can remove the code from my source code as well. Otherwise it will be great if any of the tools generates a report based on my conditions. Can any one suggest me the tools available to find and remove the un-used methods or members?     - Displaying video/images on 2nd monitor I want to create an application (.NET C#) to run on a laptop with XP which will allow me to select an image or video on the 1st monitor (I.e.. the laptop's LCD screen) and for that selected item to be displayed in full screen on the 2nd monitor (I.e.. the laptop's external monitor port). I have found the following: 1) Open a SerialPort which happens to be a USB RS232 converter device. 2) Data can be sent and received OK. 3) Pull the plug on the USB device and CPU usage goes way up and memory starts to leaking. 4) The only way to stop the leak and free the resources is the exit the .NET application then GC seems to clean things up. 5) Somes time you might event get a BSOD and the OS creashes (Win XP). 6) The type of USB harware does not seem to make any difference. I belive this is a problem with the .NET 2005 framework as this problem does not happen in VB6 or when using HyperTerminal. I managed to stop the BSOD by inheriting the SerialPort Class and Overriding the Dispose method. When can we expect this problem to be fixed? Will it be in SP1 for NET 2005?     - Threading problem I'm using System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker to do some drawing in my application. The thread seems to run fine but it runs twice and I can't see why.     - Dumb question about application protection/cracking... Hi, If this is a stupid question, please accept my apologies! I want to create 'trial' based software that expires after 30 days unless the user purchases a licence. However, it generally doesn't take long before some smartass has cracked the software and posted in emule/edonkey, etc! Generally these cracks come in the form of a replacement .dll that has bypasses the checks made in the original .dll. Since it is possible to strong name all libraries in your application and make the application die if the correct strong name is not applied to one of the libraries, does this make .net applications more/less/as secure than 'traidional' EXEs ? I guess where I am leading is... "What is the most effective way of protection applications from cracks?" I appreciate that absolutely nothing will keep the crackers away if they are persistent enough but I am looking for something that will make cracking my app as difficult as possible. Any ideas?     - Runtime Security Permissions Hey All, I've got a program running on a Network share. It works without any problems when I add the \\server\* with Full Trust in the .Net Configuration MMC. I also export this security set as an MSI to be installed for users who wish to run the program. The question is, is that sometimes a user will simply go to the share and try running the program sometimes (start -> run -> \\server\share\Program.Net.Exe). This will cause the application to fail, and an unfriendly message to be displayed. I would like to do a test to make sure the program has the correct permissions to run, but it doesn't even reach the On_Load event. I have a VB.net 2005 Windows application, which consists out of 1 exe file and al lot of DLL (classes) which reference to each other. When I compile the lot and start the application form a pc where the VB2005 is installed, or the 2.0 SDK, the application works fine. On a pc with only Framework 2.0 installed, it doesn't work. When I then install SDK 2.0, the application works. The error is get is when a part of code references to one of the classes. when my .NET 2.0 application runs. I compiled the application using NGEN
which compiled successfully without any errors. How can I determine the
path/name of the missing file?

debuggers are fine for the development world, but don't see how that's going
to help me in a production environment. I guess the real answer to the
question is "No" you cannot find out which file is missing, only that a
missing file caused the error. That should be a nice feature that MS could
add to then exception processing. After all knowing that a file is missing is
just as important as knowinf which one. Really this is no different that the
old VB6 file not found error number, a rose by other name....
