 - Deploying App...Strong Names I have added references to the Data Access 2.7 and the Interop.MSD.. COM files and when I deploy the app i get all sorts of errors. Basically, the system is requesting that I make the Interop file a 'Strong Name' file which TOTALLY does not work and Microsoft's documentation on this SUCKS!! It's my understanding that this assembly was created by .NET b/c it uses the oledb32.dll and so it creates this Interop.MSD.. assembly for distribution purposes. I have gone as far as de-assembling the Interop.MSD*.dll and tried to manually copy public keys into the file, then verify the file as a strong name but not even this works.  - System.TypeLoadException Could not load type System.Configuration.SingleTagSect This is interesting, I have attached my web.config file and the exception I have been logging. I created a library which provide data access to a database and a control system. The library is written in C#. I created a small .exe file to test that the library builds propertly from configuration and that it communicates properly. This work great in the System.Windows.Forms. However, when I use the library in a web enviroment things don't go so well. I copy the unique instruction in the app.config file the the web.config file. Bellow is the exception generated, essentially the system crashed when it tries to load Systetem.Configuration.SingleTagSectionHandler which I used in the web.config & app.config file. Now WHY does the config file work in a desktop app enviroment and when in a web enviroment I get problems! Any suggestions on how to fix the problem would be much appreciated.  - Memory Management Problem? Forgive my rather wide posting of this note, but I was uncertain of where I would find the best help. I am working on a class that is basically providing a secure location for name/value pairs to be stored by the application. I am using TripleDES encryption and having a very odd problem that appears to be related to a memory management issue in the CLR. I have the 1.1 .NET Framework installed and I am using VS.NET 2002. Then I save it in an encrypted manner. This works fine. The second time I run, I decrypt the file just fine. Then, as soon as I instantiate a new memory stream (xmlStream) and make the following call: xmlDoc.Save(xmlStream) my encryption vector (iv) is "flushed" (all bytes set to 0). Since the variable is defined ReadOnly and I am not doing anything even remotely related to the TDES object, I am thinking that the unused, tail-end of the memory stream being used by xmlDoc is overwriting the vector array. As a result, when I decrypt my file the next go around, the first 8 bytes are screwed up. As a test, I moved the declaration of the key and vector arrays to be inside of the encryption function, and it all works flawlessly. Is there something I am missing here, or does it look (as I suspect) like the CLR is allowing a memory stream to overwrite an existing, used block of memory? Tony Tag: How to save as MHTML Tag: 61731

 - .NET site - Need help getting started!!! This si a repost, I apologize but perhaps my original inquiry got buried under all the usenet spam... I need some help getting started with a .NET web project for a commercial site. I am new to .NET and my understanding of some (but not all) of its concepts is a little sparse. I apologize for the length of this message, but hopefully it will help someone here give me the most concise and useful information, and perhaps help others out as well. :) It's been a while since I've had to design anything "real" for the web. I think the last time was just before the HTML 4.0 standard came out. I am a professional C++ developer, and I am now taking on some web work, and kind of need to hit the ground running with .NET. I have some general site / application design questions that I'm hoping someone might be able to answer to help me to that end. :) I want to emphasize that this is a "real world" application I'm developing, and as such sometimes some of the more academic constructs used in the text books give way to better and cleaner-looking solutions (for example, nobody "really" uses the familiar MS access-style data grids in their commercial productions.) Overall, the site I am working on is pretty straightforward, and my only real motivation for using .NET here is that I want to become more proficient with it, and migrate to it as a means of development... all of that said... My website will provide information and interat with the user in the mortgage business. So, it wil do things like quote current interest rates, as well as calculate payments and employ a few other business rules objects that I feel .NET will be well suited for. What I am having trouble learning is where the "marriage" comes in between the server-side stuff that .NET does, particularly with web forms, and the HTML structure and formatting stuff that makes the page look nice. As much as I detested the design-time controls in VS6, they, and the site templates at least took care of some of this for you, even if the designs did look kind of chesey right out of the box, and a pain in the butt to modify or author your own. Consider this: Physically, all (or at least most) of the pages on my site will be laid out with a coloured bar down the left side of the page, which contains button images I've done up in PhotoShop. The remainder of the page is the "body" area, where my non-scrolling background will go, over which I will place the content for the page. As the user navigates the site, the buttons on the left will change to reflect the options available at that point on the web, and of course the content in the main page area will change as they navigate as well. When users first enter the site, they will be asked to provide logon information that will be used throughout the sesion to provide customized content (ie information relavent to their customer profile, pending loan application, etc.) In the good ol' days of HTML, we'd accomplish this most likely with frames, and using an HTML FORM to post the logon data back to some script on the server (ewe... CGI... Yuck). With .NET, we seem to have these things called webforms (aspx files), and it seems pretty straightforward to design one. I had no trouble making a nice cheesy login screen and pulling up the info out of the database for the customer... the concepts of the data connections, datasets (I think we used to call them "recordsets")... all that is pretty simple. But what about the visual aspect of this? Should I use a FRAMESET on my site, putting the .aspx pages in the appropriate frames at the appropriate time? Or, Should I visually build the TABLE structure on the default.aspx page and then write code behind it to put the right things in the right parts of the table at the right times? (ie the proper buttons in the left table section, and the proper content / form controls in the right-hand section) - This concept is employing a full-screen table to break up the browser window into the logical components I want. I don't know if this methodology is outdated, which is why I'm asking all of this. ("once HTML, always HTML" LOL) On one hand, the latter seems to be in the spirit of .NET - One page, from the user's perspective, that dynamically serves up all the content for the entire session... Or should I be attacking this in a different way? How, for example would I include a web form inside of a static HTML element, like the TABLE, to yield the nicely formatted results I'm looking for, or what .NET approach should I be using instead? I know that the old .asp approach to things was to have the global.asa file contain the data objects (like the session information) for the site, and then .asp files within the site could refer to that global information to pass data such as your logon / account information from one page to another as you traverse the site. I don't really know what mechanisms should be used for doing this in .NET and, what makes it worse is that I'm under a real time crunch on this particular project. Thank God I'm a quick study. :) .NET does not seem to employ traditional .asp pages. I mean, while it seems to parse them fine, there is no template for creating a new .asp page, only a webform (aspx), unless that is the approach to be used for presenting all content? Hmm... These are the things I really need answered. :) I could probably get myself through this, hard and hand coding around the files to force it to do what I want, but I'd rather do this the "right" way from the get-go, so that growing and maintaining the site will not be come and ever-increasing chore. I want to thank anyone who's had the patience to read through all of this for your time. An example of a project would be a GREAT resource, but if you can at least give me concise enough information to get me pointed in the right direction, I can figure out the rest I am sure.  - web deployment issues / runtime errors This si a repost, I apologize but perhaps my original inquiry got buried under all the usenet spam... I am having some problems deploying .NET content. My first guess is that I am probably not using the correct approach to something here. Hopefuly someone will be kind enough to get me back on track. :) I'm hosting content on my own equipment. I have two machines - One Win2K server acting as a PDC running DNS, IIS, and SQL Server 2000. I have one other Win2K Professional machine that I use to serve up the files for the web content. This is partly because this second machine has a HUGE hard drive and is also my desktop PC, so it makes editing conent easy and straightforward. The sites I host are very low traffic for the moment, so there are no load-balancing or bandwidth / performance issues as this time, and we'll deal with those once we get the technical aspects of deployment worked out. Ah, the joys of working on a budget! Anyway... the problem.... All this equipment is inside our private network, with a router providng the inbound connection from the T1. So, my two machines are server.office.local and workstation.office.local in the DNS. On my workstation (ie fileserver) PC, I created C:\webs\MyWeb and made it a share (\\workstation\MyWeb) for holding all the site content. Back on the server, I created a new web site in IIS, set its host header and all that, and then set it's home directory to \\workstation\MyWeb. When I do this, I get warnings from the FrontPage server extensions telling me that anyone can edit my site, and that I should use an NTFS drive... bla, bla, bla... but that share IS on an NTFS drive. All of my partitions on all machines are NTFS partitions. Moreover, when I attempt to browse to the site, I get security warnings from .NET. The pages I've put up so far are very simple web forms that do stuff like put up a data grid of some stuff out of the pubs database.... So I don't know what the big deal is. If I enable IIS on \\workstation, and then browse to localhost\MyWeb, it works just fine. However, if I try to go through the IIS server on \\server, it won't work. If I move all of the web content off of the file server, and put it into C:\inetpubs\wwwroot (or some other subfolder) on \\server, then it runs fine. What's going on here? Surely that can't be a limitation of the server and IIS... I know almost no commercial shop that physically hosts everything on one machine. Once again, it's probably something small I'm overlooking here, but the darn error messages are so cryptic and usually have NOTHING to do with what's "really" the problem.  - Getting directory infrormation from Novell 5.1 I am developing a VB.NET/ASP.NET app and need to validate users, get their groups and other such login/password tasks from out company directory. That information is stored in a server running Novell 5.1. I have ben digging dee into the system.directoryservices spec but most of what I am seeing relates to AD. The Novell stuff shows lines such as: Dim objDE = New DirectoryEntry("LDAP://DC=onecity") console.writeline(objDE.Properties("currentTime")(0)) This code produces the error: "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted". The code stops on the SECOND line, which I think is strange. I checked with our network admin for the correct base tree on Novell and typed it in place of "onecity" in the above example.  - web service development hi, I'm using win2k professional, and i'm having trouble whenever i try to open a web service project in VS.NET 2003, I'm always getting this message: "Visual Studio .NET has detected that the specified Web server is not running ASP.NET version 1.1. You will be unable to run ASP.NET Web applications or services." The funny thing is that I never had that message before, It just started one day(I must have done something.. don't know what). So i tried executing C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322 \aspnet_regiis.exe -i didn't help .. so I remove all .NET components and VS.NET 2003, and did a reinstall... same error!  - Can I allow varying types on a MustOverride I am looking to have a base class which provides that all inherited classes MUST have some property, but that they can each define it as whatever type they want. So maybe three class inherit from the base class, each MUST have a [Type] property, but one defines it as OracleType, one as SqlType and one as DB2Type, for example. I know i can just declare it as Object, and then have the classes each do typechecks on value assignment, but this is late-bound. I would like some way to implement this so that the type-specificity of each class is early-bound, allowing for compile time type checking. Is this possible?  - Assembly Reference Version Question I built several .NET dlls with assorted classes in them. My app references these DLLs in its reference section so I can use the classes. Is there something I can put into the AssemblyInfo or somewhere to tell the app that it should reference the latest version of the dll? It alwasy uses the one that it there, but if the version is different, I get a compiler warning about the version conflict. I was hoping to get rid of this. I saw that if you put it into the GAC, you can provide a publisher file that tells the system to upgrade the version. I don't want to put my stuff in hte GAC. Thanks.  - Shared Dlls and Recompiling Hi There, Im currently working on a project with another developer. We've making two websites, both of which will share a common code library. Though the library is quite complete, we still find extra bits that need adding to it from time to time. Both web projects have the dll set up as a reference, but when that dll is recompiled, the web projects do not seem to notice that the dll is a newer version. It has problems with parsing certain pages and raises errors for these when perhaps it shouldn't. Another downside is that it only supports the out of the box Microsoft controls. The people who are producing NUnitASP haven't been able to create another release for almost a year now. I was thinking how an impetus good be given to them to improve it and keep working on it. One such way would be to encourage makers of ASP.NET Web Controls to supply tester objects to be used with NUnitASP. For example I have been using ComponentOne's Suite and found it to be quite good. However I'd like to unit test the web pages with NUnitASP. I have asked ComponentOne to supply tester objects to be used with NUnitASP. IF third party suppliers supply support for unit testing then I think this will help generate the support needed to improve NUnitASP. Perhaps if it where funded to be maintained then we can get a better product and more reliability in testing of web pages. Interested to also hear about any other thoughts on this.  - No Touch Deployment: Force Refresh of Assembly Download Cache My applications are being run using no touch deployment from a hosting web server. The client program calls AppDomain.ExecuteAssembly to start execution of the application. Most of the time everything works fine. However, my applications make use of a third party component and everytime they make a new version available they don't change their assembly version number but just the file version number. So whenever new features are added and one of my apps begins using the new feature the no touch deployment of the app is broken because the newer version is not detected on the web server and loaded over the previous version in the assembly download cache. Is there a way I can force ExecuteAssembly to not compare assembly version numbers and just overwrite all existing assemblies it needs to load?
