    - TraceSwitch XML file error I am working through the Windows Applications with C# book by Amit Khalani for the 70-316 exam, I am using VStudio version 7.1.3088. In the chapter on Testing and Debugging there is an example where you are asked to do as follows..... "In Solution Explorer, select View All Files from the toolbar. Navigate to the bin\debug folder. Right-click and Add New Item. Choose to create an XML file and name the file StepByStep12_3.exe.config". You then add some xml code to specify a trace switch. The rest of the project is a basic Form with code that aims to demonstrate various levels of output from the TraceSwitch class by changing the value of the switch that was set in the XML file above. The following variable is declared in the Form... static TraceSwitch traceSwitch = new TraceSwitch("FactorialTrace", "Trace the factorial application"); I managed to do add the xml file to the debug folder after figuring out that you have to choose to select 'Include in the Project' for these normally hidden folders to be available in the IDE. However when I Build the project the new XML file is deleted and therefore the switch value is not picked up. Has anyone come across this behaviour? Maybe there has been a change since the book was written. I have downloaded the errata for the book from the Que website and there is nothing about this chapter being wrong.     - Struct with fixed-length array member - is it possible? Hello, Can you provide some hints on how would you solve a problem like this? I'm out of ideas... Here's the problem: Let's imagine a C structure containing a fixed-size array struct XYZ { int V1; int V2; double V3[50]; }; This structure, when allocated, occupies a contiguous block of memory (408 bytes in my compiler). Now I would like to have the same structure in C#, such that it would have THE SAME MEMORY LAYOUT as the C structure. The memory size does not need to be identical as in C, but the structure should occupy a single memory block and all data, including the array, should be placed in this block. There is no possibility in C# to declare a fixed-size array and to 'embed' it completely in a struct. When I make a declaration like this: public struct XYZ { int V1; int V2; double[] V3; } the V3 member is a reference to array object, not the array itself.     - Monitor Exchange 2K queues I'm trying to Monitor my E2K queues, using C# and WMI I'm having a couple of problems. 1 - Exchange seems to dynamically create and destroy queues :( How does my Exchange Manager know the name of the queues, that it shows? 2 - After creating a class via the server browser, I can't figure out how to get ExchangeQueue.GetInstances() to work, when I'm working on a computer that is remote from the server.     - Databinding w/Update Hi All, I am under the impression that databinding allows a control to be updated automatically by the interface when the underlying value changes. However, many of my controls will not update after the initial display. If I have a boolean property and I bind it to a checkbox's checked property, I should be able to change the boolean from true to false and observe the checkbox go from checked to unchecked. One puzzle is how to write a regular expression to find out and remove all the redundent blank spaces. However, those blank spaces that are in the comments should be kept intact.     - Error When Interop'ing to COM+ Managed Object with Library Activation I have a remoting server that is on the same local box as a COM+ managed object with Library Activation. When I try to activate the object from the remoted assembly, I get the following error: "The specified activation could not occur in the client context as specified." The security context of the service application that is activating the object has the proper credentials. It's been years since I've had to deal with COM+ and I'm a bit rusty.     - HttpWebRequest & SSL problems I have a HttpWebRequest connecting to a SSL server. The server has a valid Verisign certifcate installed, so no client-side cert is needed. I am getting intermittent errors when connecting to the server. One in every five times I try to connect, I see the error: "The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish secure channel for SSL/TLS.)" I tried using a ICertificatePolicy to allow any certificate, but that didn't work. The funny thing is when I load my own certificate using: request.ClientCertificates.Add(X509Certificate.CreateFromCertFile("mycert.cer")); ...I never see the error.     - String.Empty vs. string literal Anybody have a definitive, backable answer to which version performs better: String.Empty vs. ""? Given: private void TestEmptyObject ( string value ) { int nCt = 0; if (value == String.Empty) ++nCt; } My experiments show that they are equivalent except for String.Empty is loaded through ldsfld and "" is loaded through ldstr. They both eventually call String.Equality(string, string) which will treat them the same. My rule is to use "" because to me it is clearer to read. Anybody have a really good reason why String.Empty should be used instead? Of course I'm only talking about a single language here. Understandably String.Empty is useful when trying to represent an empty string in a (programming) language neutral way but this is rare.     - String Concat vs. Plus operator Does anybody have a definitive, backable answer to which way is better when concating strings (String.Concat vs. +). You can easily prove one faster than the other in contrived examples. I'm interested in real-world examples. My experiments have shown that both versions are equivalent. Given: void TestStringOp ( string value1, string value2, string value3 ) { string result = value1 + " " + value2 + " and " + value1 + " " + value3; } void TestStringConcat ( string value1, string value2, string value3 ) { string result = String.Concat(value1, " ", value2, " and ", value1, " ", value3); } Dumping the IL for TestStringOp reveals that this is converted to the equivalent of this: string[] temp = new string[] { value1, " ", value2, " and ", value1, " ", value3 }; string result = String.Concat(temp); Dumping the IL for TestStringConcat reveals that the exact same code is generated. Therefore the performance is identical. The bad thing about this is that internally String.Concat will allocate another string array and copy the strings into it before finally calling the fast string allocator. The only time I think Concat is a better choice is when the # of strings to concat is 4 or less. In this case the optimized version of the concat routine is called. Therefore my running rule is that if concatenating 4 or less strings then use String.Concat otherwise it doesn't matter. Understandably timing this code won't be very revealing since the optimizer will probably get rid of all the code anyway but by comparing the IL I should be able to overlook the optimizations that will be done.     - Changed functionality in system.directoryservices ver. 1.1.4322.20 Dear all, we have the following problem. We like to update a LDAP diretory using system.directoryservices. This worked fine in the past but now it stopped working, we get a System.NotSupportedException. We use the following syntax: <DirectoryEntry>.Properties[<attribute>][0] = <value>; Further research turned out that this does work using system.directoryservices.dll 1.1.4322.573 but doesn't work using version 1.1.4322.2032. To investigate the difference I used Reflector (c# disassembler). I found the following code (for set_item) in version 1.1.4322.2032: if (this.needNewBehavior && !this.allowMultipleChange) { throw new NotSupportedException(); } base.List[index] = value; Version 1.1.4322.573 doesn't has this "if" criteria, it simply sets the value. If I look at the values using the debugger I see that this.allowMultipleChange is false and needNewBehavior is true, therefore I get a NotSupportedException(). So now I have a huge problem: I can't update my LDAP anymore. Can anybody help me with this problem? Or does anybody know where I can find documentation about the differences in the different releases of a dll? Or does anybody know where I can find system.directoryservices newsgroups? Or does anybody know how to contact miscrosoft about this matter (somebody must have changed the code for some reason without documenting it)?     - Code isolation with the AppDomain class I am responsible for the plugin-loading part of an app. One of the things the loader has to do is check licensing, and unload any unlicensed plugins. I naively did this as: AppDomain Sandbox = AppDomain.CreateDomain("Sandbox"); try { Assembly Suspect = Sandbox.Load(PluginName); // do some tests on Suspect.GetExportedTypes() } finally { AppDomain.Unload(Sandbox); } The code seemed to work, but it turns out that Sandbox.Load(PluginName) is actually loading the PluginName into both the Sandbox AppDomain and the default AppDomain. When I unload Sandbox, I'm left with all tested plugins still loaded into the default AppDomain, whether they are licensed or not. I do NOT want to execute any assemblies: I just want to load my suspects; do some tests in the temp AppDomain; and return the test results to the default AppDomain. It looks like my only option is to use AppDomain.DoCallBack to execute my tests, and use SetData to store the results. Also installed MS Installer 3.1, which I uninstalled now, after facing problems in VStudio. This is what happened: I had a solution with several projects and a setup project.     - Start Up Hi, Im not sure if im posting in the right place , here is the problem , I have some code (written in .net) that is started up when the PC starts and runs forms full screen with no borders. The problem is that, the program is hooked up to a wireless network to the server, but if my program is loaded at startup the wifi network doesnt connect, meaning that the program cant get access to the server.     - Is there a max limit on the number of Managed Windows Services that can be run on Win 2000 server? We have a situation where we keep hitting below error 1053 The .......... service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. whenever we try to start managed windows service above a specific number. On one server (SERVER1) it is 25, on another (SERVER2) it is 27. There are 9 different services, each 9 constitutes a release version. Were are trying to use the same server to handle multiple versions, however, we have this limitation where we can only get a max of 3 sites (3 x 9services) at best running. It does not matter which services are running, when we reach this limit no other managed service will start. If I stop one, I can start another. I don't believe it is a licensing issue, we do use Crystal however, the same issue occurs if I do not start those services that use the Crystal dll's. The environment is Windows 2000 server. My console application (vb.net, .net framework 1.1) is using a call to
Process.GetCurrentProcess.ProcessName.
It works fine when I run the app as administrator, but I would
like the run it with a normal user account using the
least possible privileges.
Does anyone know what rights need to be set?
I already gave the user the same rights in the Windows Server
2003 local security policy as the builtin administrator, but this did not
work.

I am not sure if the .NET framework Process class uses
WMI, but adding permissions in WMI control tool did not
work either.

Thoughts anyone?
