    - GPS Hello all, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I think this is a good place to start. I have been asked to write a small program, to run on a laptop (or perhaps a PDA) that accepts log entries. They want several fields captured, among them lat/long coordinates. Is there a standard API for getting this info or will this need to be written with a specific piece of GPS hardware in mind? I think I'm over my head here. Any help would be appreciated.     - How to bind to DC depending on site I'm trying to bind to DC by site. The environment is a AD 2K3 domain with multiple sites. For example, when my application is started, it checks for the site of the computer where the application is running. Then, it looks for a DC in the site and then all DirectorySearcher and DIrectoryEntry operations will use a binding string aimed at that DC on the site. If the DC is not available, then a default server, the PDC emulator is used. How would I code in VB .Net the following: 1) Determine which site the current PC running my application is in. 2) Determine which domain controllers are in the site. 3) Bind directly to the domain controller on the site using DirectoryServices.DirectoryEntry or DirectoryServices.DirectorySearcher It's just that I don't trust the automatic DC selection when performing directory operations.     - How to copy an MS Excel graphic from the system clipboard to an image control and obtain its source reference in .Net with either VB.Net or C# Hello, Here is what I'm trying to do: -- Make sure both MS Excel and MS Word are running -- Create an Excel chart -- Save the Excel file -- Copy the Excel chart onto the clipboard using Ctrl + C -- Go to Word and look under Edit > Paste Special -- Note there is a source reference and an option to paste the chart as a metafile, etc. -- I would like to take this same information and make it available in a C# or VB.Net app For example, create a simple Windows application with a userform, an image control, a label and a single command button. Let's say that after the Excel chart is on the clipboard, one clicks the Windows application command button and Voila!, the imate control now contains a copy of the Excel chart and the label contains the reference information. I can make this work utilizing older technologies (i.e. WIN API to access the clipboard, etc.). Currently, when I try to set the image control in C#, I get a "cannot implicitly convert ..." blah blah error. Don't even know where to begin to obtain the source reference. Either I do not understand the currently available clipboard functionality under .Net or this is still only possible via the WIN API. Any assistance would be appreciated. The problem is that I get different results when I print "?" a variable when using Enterprise Services (ES) than when ES is not included.     - problems with .net after a restore problem Hey I was wondering if anybody could help me with this problem, I cannot get my head around it. Basically I installed a program called editvoicepack that adds callsigns to microsofts flight simulator 2002. It also requires microsofts .net framework 1.1. It ran fine but I had to restore my computer to an earlier time because I lost a bit of work by mistake. Anyway after this the program did not work, I tried reinstalling it, resetting the restore point, completely deleting it from the registry and then resinstalling it and i still get this an unhandled exception. So I downloaded the .net SDK and ran the program through the compiler. I get the following problems. THE FIRST PROBLEM When the program runs the following error message occurs: An unhandled exception of type 'System.InvalidOperationException' occurred in system.xml.dll Additional information: There is an error in XML document (0, 0).     - Dead Socket Detection? Hi, everyone, I am trying to test a client/server solution that uses the .NET Socket class (blocking mode on the server). I need the server to be able to verify that a socket is still valid in case the client app drops the connection (i.e. the client app crashes). The Poll method and the Available and Connected properties always return the same value regardless if the connection is valid or not. Using the Receive(w/ Peek) method also does not work since it waits for incoming data if the connection is valid. Any suggestions on how to efficiently check the connection? Thanks, Bob L.     - Distribution Issues I created some DLL and EXE files in VB.NET to be used on a Windows XP computer. They worked successfully on my laptop where they were written, so I prepared another machine to use them. I installed dotnetfx.exe on the other machine and registered the DLL's. When I tried to run the DLL's, however, I got this message: "Attempt to execute COM object [object name here] failed. Could not create object." When I tried to run the EXE files, this this was the message: "Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Process id=0xd08 (3336), thread id=0x408 (1032)" Are there certain steps to place .NET DLL's and EXE's on another Windows XP machine? Install succeeded: - framework 2.0.... - MSDE 2000 - Visual WebDeveloper2005 ASP.NET 2.0 is running, but... when i try to access the webadmin module e.g. by going http://localhost/sitename/webadmin.axd there is an error saying that: "Unable to serialize the session state. In 'StateServer' and 'SQLServer' mode, ASP.NET will serialize the session state objects, and as a result non-serializable objects or MarshalByRef objects are not permitted. The same restriction applies if similar serialization is done by the custom session state store in 'Custom' mode." Is there any compatibility issue with serialization in dotnet 2.0? my system is as follows: - windows xp pro version 2002 ( sp1 ) - dotnet framework 2.0.40607 Beta - Visual Web Developer 2005 Beta (preview) - MSDE 2000 (local)-instance with sa and set password (not downloaded sqlserver express 2005, since to big/time went by) and nothing else.     - Bootstrapper Install problem I am using the bootstrapper plug-in from http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/downloads/tools/bootstrapper/ to include .net with my visual studio application. One major problem I am noticing now is when i make a new build, the installer won't let me install over or "upgrade", it makes me physically uninstall my program from Add/Remove Programs.     - Check AD password if "user must change password next login" Hi all, I'm trying to find a way (using C#.NET or COM) to authenticate a user based on his credentials in Active Directory. The problem is that when I manually set "User Must Change Password at Next Logon", or when the password expires, I can no longer bind to AD using this user. Is there a method that checks the password in AD regardless of that flag? What I'm trying to implement is a dialog box prompting a user to change the password if the password has expired.     - DirectoryServices Hi, A system that is being designed will use ActiveDirectory to store userinformation for a SQL Server 200 base web app. It was decided that only the windows account username need be stored in the database for authentication by the web app. However I realised that if we chould take this route everytime I wish to display a users name I will have to do a lookup to get the details from the to AD after getting the windwos user account from SQL Server. This sounds rubbish to be frank. Should I just store what I need i.e., First name, surname, email address in the database and us the AD purely for authentication. But then doesn't this loose some of the valu eof the AD and means there are two sources of info to maintain. Does anyone have any metrics on connection/transaction time with an AD, if it is nominal then I will go with the original plan. Also any advice on the topic would be greatly appreciated. MattC P.S.     - Root transaction wanted to commit, but transaction aborted Hi All, I have a .NET data access class that has TransactionOption.RequiresNew attribute set, and one of the functions has AutoComplete attribute set to True. The class is registered as a COM+ serviced component (through regsvcs). This function runs a stored procedure that takes 5 to 10 minutes. Through the profiler, I am able to trace this stored proc to completion. However, when control returns to the .NET function, an error "The root transaction wanted to commit, but transaction aborted" is raised. 1. The timeout is set to 0 (infinite). 2. The stored procedure uses no TRANSACTION statements. 3. There is no SetComplete()or SetAbort() in the code. 4. It runs fine without any errors if I run it from Query Analyzer. 5. It also runs properly if I use a simple SQLCommand without using this class. Is there anything else I can do to see where the problem is? Other details: I am using Framework 1.1 under Windows 2003.     - Namespace or type '...' for the Imports '...' cannot be found I'm getting the following error in my ASP.NET application: Namespace or type 'DirectoryServices' for the Imports 'System.DirectoryServices' cannot be found. I have added the System.DirectoryServices.dll to my References, and am including the line "<%@ Import Namespace="System.DirectoryServices" %>" at the top of the page. I have checked my global assembly cache (both on the development and the target machine) and both have the correct version of the assembly (1.0.5000.0). The server is Windows Server 2003, with all of the latest patches and updates installed. I've searched the net and newsgroups and have not yet found any solution to this one beyond the ususal "Add a reference to System.DirectoryServices.dll" to your project".     - TCPClient Performance Severly Lags Behind VB6 Winsock I'm writing a connector for a client to replace an old VB6 system. The connector works, but is several times slower than the older VB6 connector. I have isolated the problem to be in the connection to the server. All we are doing is sending a input stream to the server and receiving an output stream in response. The code is below.     - Building a "snap-in" framework Hi, My company is building a suite of applications in VB.NET. Ideally, we would like to build a base application framework (like the Windows MMC) that can accept these applications as "snap-ins". This would allow us to then deploy applications as they are developed, and permit the user to add this new functionality without requiring a new build and the headaches associated with an updated application rollout.     - GroupBox not showing Controls (sometimes) Sometimes Controls that have been added to a GroupBox do not show up. What I am doing : 1) I am not using the designer, but create all the Controls per hand: groupBoxProdukt_01 = new System.Windows.Forms.GroupBox(); etc. for all other Controls. The above shown "Produkt" is one with 5 GroupBoxes. The other Dialogs have one GroupeBox and show fine, Produkt shows only the first GroupBox with the desigered Controls. The other GroupBoxes are shown but are empty. The Buttons outside the GroupBoxes also show. When I first tried this I placed all Controls on to the Panel and the Controls show up. But if I called another Dialog before "Produkt" and then called Produkt then ALL the GroupBoxes where empty. When setting the GroupBox to visiable=false, the Controls showed in the proper position. I found out that the Controls should be added to the GroupBox hoping this would solve the problem. But it works only with the first GroupBox and not the others that are set to visable. My question is how do you get the unique MedID key after the table is updated so that it may be used in creating a new row in the Perscription table? In VB for Acess I was able to do this by making changes to a recordset, updating the recordset and then moving to the lastmodifed row and getting the newly entered MedID from that row. In Visual C#, I believe that a unique key is not created until an Update command is issued to the dataadapter and dataadapters don't have a "move" method.
