    - Get current Service and it's name Hello! I have an helper assembly, which runs in different applications. In each application I would like to determine the name of the current application. I want to know, how I can get the name of the current service instance. I thougt it would be possible to get the current service using something like System.ServiceProcess...     - invoking a method on a particular thread In general what I would like to do is have an application with X number of threads and then be able to call a method and have it execute in the thread of my choice. What would be the best way to accomplish this? One reason I want to do this is that I'm working on a asp.net application. This app will use an acitveX control that will generate map images for me. This activeX control also must run in a thread with appartment state STA. So, after this thread creates an instance of this activeX control I would like it to "sleep" and wait to be told what to do. I could use events but I would rather be able to simply instruct the "sleeping" thread to execute the method of my choice and pass parameters as you normally word a method. any ideas?     - Help: specified cast is not valid. All, I am using XmlSerializer in a VS.NET 2003 add-in project to save data. I have noticed sometimes all XmlSerialization fail, the error message is "specified cast is not valid.". One from the APPBASE directory ( loaded by Assembly.LoadFrom()? ), the other from VS.NET ProjectAssemblies directory ( loaded by Assembly.Load()? ). The types in these two loaded assemblies can't be casted to each other even though they are from _in_fact_ the same assemblies. Unfortunately, the two solutions provided in Philipp Sumi's posts donnot really work for me ( I think ): 1.Make assembly strong name and install to GAC: My assembly depends on other files/assemblies, and it is still under active development. I cannot ask all developers in the team to reinstall the assembly everytime a new version is out. I think automatically install assembly to GAC for every new build is overkilled. 2.Custom serialization seems a lot of work. There are still a few questions which I has failed to find any answers: 1. What triggers the shadow copy of VS.NET, and _why_? I have noticed these scenarios but I donot know why: a. If I launch the add-in right after a successful rebuild to the same add-in project, the XmlSerializer.Deserialize() call triggers shadow copy. b. If there are opened forms in the solution, it may triggers shadow copy when the solution loaded. 2. Why XmlSerializer.Deserialize() (through Reflection) triggers shadow copy? 3. From JunFengZhang's blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/junfeng/archive/2005/05/31/423340.aspx, I have the impression that Add-In uses Assembly.LoadFrom() to load Add-In assemblies, Am I correct if I claim: a. all assmblies loaded directly for Add-In are loaded by Assembly.LoadFrom()? b. when Add-In is doing the XmlSerialization, Assmbly.Load() was used to loaded the shadow copied assembly. 4. How do I know whether the given assembly loaded by Assembly.Load() or Assembly.LoadFrom()? 5. If I have two assemblies loaded in current application domain, one through Load(), the other through LoadFrom(). Is it possible to convert the types between the assemblies, I meant if I have an instance of one type from one assmbliy, can I use it to construct/populate the same type from the other assembly?     - using assemblies with different verions I have an C# windows app called Test.Exe. It is built with a reference to a strongly named assembly called Base.dll, with a specific version and public / private key set. The version of Base.dll that Test.exe refers to is in the same directory as Text.exe. This application wants to load a strongly named assembly called Derived.dll (in a separate directory), which was also built with a reference to a (potentially different version of the) strongly named assembly of Base.dll. The version of Base.DLL that Derived.dll refers to is located in the same directory as Derived.DLL. The application loads the Derived.dll assembly with a complete specification (name, version and public key token) and uses System.Reflection.Assembly.CreateInstance to create an instance of a class from the assembly. If the versions of the Base.dll assembly are the same (same build) then the instance is created successfully. However, when the versions of Base.dll are different we get an error. The assembly object is successfully loaded, but when used to call CreateInstance of a type defined in Derived.dll, the System.Reflection.Assembly.CreateInstance method returns null. To test that the different version of Base.dll were the issue, we built Test.EXE from the same version as Derived.dll was built from, and when that version is executed, the system performs correctly. What do we do to get implicitly included assemblies to use the specific version of the assemblies that they refer to - and cause a load of a new version if the one that is currently loaded is the correct name, but incorrect version?     - Need general guidance about deployent and database access (Sorry if this is a little vague.) I have a program I want to turn into a shareware package. This means that I have to come up with deployment simple enough for anyone to use and small enough to download quickly. This program needs a relatively small simple database to work and I've developed it using SQL Server. I have no doubt the data structure could be replicated on almost any popular db system. I think I know enough to write code that would allow the program to create either a SQL Server or Access db after installtion but I don't want to re-invent the wheel. (And I would like to make it flexible enough so that conceivably a user could create the data structure on any conventional db system and hook to it.) While I know how to program, I do not have any serious experience with Dot Net program deployment. (image-property) Hi, I want to use the DataGridViewButtonColumn of VS.NET 2005, but this button isn't a n'ormal' button, but some minor and inusable version fo the button-control. I want to show an image in my button, which is normally I standard proeprty of the button, but it doesn't have this proeprty. Does anybody knows how to do this? Actually: these columnstyles of the DataGridView makes me really angry. I can't understand why for god's sake Microsoft suddenly invents minor versions of there controls to put them in these columnstyles! Why the hell did they do this? why put time in a product that is worse than the orginal? The same with the DataGridViewComboBoxColumn! It worked well except for those functions in the VB com class with arrays. I'm finding that if a particular node isn't found, instead of giving me an error, it dumps the raw HTML back. If I pass the variables in, and there is a node with a PAGEID of 7, then it returns the value of the CONTENTID. However, if there *isn't* a node with a PAGEID of 7, instead of an error, it dumps the entire XML file as a string.     - css file can't grab querystring I'm building a CMS that has various controls that grab various values from the querystring. Those all work just fine. However, one of my files is actually a CSS file. It's an ASPX file that dynamically writes out the CSS. It's loaded as you would any CSS file (from a link tag). The catch is that from this aspx page, I can not grab the querystring. I'm guessing, because it's not the actual ASPX page that is loading everything else. The solution that I came up with is to convert this to a usercontrol, then load the usercontrol in my HEAD tags, and just have it write out inline CSS for me. However, I was wondering if there's another option that wouldn't require me to do the inline response.write. I'd like to capture that output and present it in a log window as soon as it's written. Problem: Reading from Process.StandardOutput seems to be limited to when the internal StandardOutput buffer is full. The docs state "If the size of the internal buffer was unspecified when the stream was constructed, its default size is 4 kilobytes (4096 bytes).", but I'm not really in control of creating that stream - it's done by the Process object.     - Error 1053 - When Writing EventLog Hi I have a problem that I'm trying to track down third day or so. I have a .Net Windows Service here that used to run on the server. I have updated it a bit and now I cant find a way to make it write EventLogs on the server (it works perfectly fine on my machine and another server I was testing). It gives me error 1053 whenever the service tries to write an entry (EventLog.WriteEntry("sth", "sth"). This is my conclusion after isolating every other parts of the code. So if I have EventLog.WriteEntry("sth", "sth") in the OnStart method then it won't let me start the service. And if I have EventLog.WriteEntry("sth", "sth") in the OnStop method - it doesn't let me stop it for 5 minutes or so.     - Design Question. C/S Threads & AppDomains Hi all, I am developing a client/server application which has to potentially handle a very large number of concurrent users. Each connection is associated with a session object much like ASP.NET. My first wish is to be able to process the sessions in parallel. Obviously I can run each session in a separate thread however I gather that once there is a large number of users the number of threads will be too much of a drain on system resources. So I am thinking I should use a thread pool with a set number of threads and then each thread would be assigned multiple sessions. Is this the correct way of thinking? My second wish is to be able to to somehow secure each session within its own execution boundary. Basically so that if something causes a session to crash it does not take all the other sessions down with it. Is the solution to this to run each session in its own application domain? If so how would this combine with the thread approach? If say I had 50,000 users connected to a server that would potentially be a hell of a lot of threads + application domains which I assume isn't the right way to go about it.     - copy a project with Configured assemblies Hi, We have a web application that references several strong named assemblies. This application is in a web server that had to replace. We copied the web application to another web server and registered the latest version of all the strong named assemblies. When we tried to enter in the application a binding error was thrown telling us that the assembly with name xx or one of his dependencies was not found. But the assembly was installed in the GAC and added as configured assembly with a binding policy. What seems to be happening is that .NET is searching the version of the assembly that is was originally compiled with. So if our application was compiled with version 1.0.0.0 and later it was updated to 1.0.0.1 it will search for 1.0.0.0 when searching for dependencies even when you add a binding policy to the GAC. In the new web server these old version where not installed so an error was thrown. We ended up installing all of our versions of the strong named assemblies on the new web server. My question is if this is the right way of handling this. Wouldnâ??t be better that when searching for the dependencies it would look for the latest version configured in the GAC, so that when you copy to a new web server you do not have to install al the old versions that are not used. The old pre-dotnet CDONTS obects did not have this behaviour. The problem is that system.web.mail sends messages with naked line feeds in them rather than escaping them to be a cr and an lf. My application wants to access this directory but I don't want the user be able to access this directory through windows explorer. I will create a domain User say 'XUSER' who will have full access on this network path. This username 'XUSER' and its password will be stored in the database. Any comments??     - Strange ThreadStateException exceptions Hi, In my application, I call myThread.Abort() which works fine most of the time. Ocassionally however, this results in a ThreadStateException being thrown which hangs the application. The exception message being 'Thread is suspended; attempting to abort'. Checking the status of the thread before abort was called shows it to be a background thread and not a suspended one? In addition I can't reproduce this problem when running the application from the exe file i.e not through the code in Visual Studio? Any ideas as to what is going would be much appreciated. I've tried to install my cofigured component (Enterprise Services) in
more than one application
partition on Windows 2003 Server using regsvcs.exe /parname:<name of
partition>. The first installation (in first partition) has worked
without problems but the
second has failed with an error: "...already installed". I haven't
found
anything in google or msdn. What's wrong? With COM components it works
without problems...
