    - datatable from xml doc and massive time differences on desktop / server Hello All, I have an xml document which can contain massive amounts of data with no fixed child node sequence. We have some 9000 odd fields and any ones can be a part of the xml. The way i build the data table is that i process one record at a time and i keep a list of columns in hash table (with ordinal position) and in a string collection (for retrieval in correct order) and for each field, if the column does not exists, i add the column and for that ordinal position, i set the value in the data table. For xml doc contain 85000 odd records with say 5 child fields, on my desktop i can process the whole thing and display paged in list in 4 mins and 40 secs, however on the server it takes around 12 mins. Same input file, same code, same binaries. The desktop which performs faster is Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz with 2 GB of RAM and running XP The Server runs 4 x 2.6 Dual core Opteron with 16 GB of RAM running Windows 2003 Server Enterprise edition.     - How to connect to a service Hi all! I have written a small little windows-service. I can start and stop this service in the service-snapin. So far all pretty nice! But i need to controll this service. It is possible to send this service an object (such as a string) an receive object (also a string, or another object)? The only what I have found yet is the ServiceController. With this class I can connect to service an can get some information about it. i can also shut down or start a service or can send a custom signal to it, but I couldn't sent an object to the service.     - Cannot install Framework 3.5 on Vista Ultimate I have a vista ultimate, trying to install Expression Web studio 2. It requires Fx 3.5 but the installation of 3.5 failed. I checked teh system and only .Net fx Compact 1.0 SP3 for developer and Compact 2.0 are listed. I was able to install VS 2005 before without problem.     - Basic question on WPF, chaning zoom level like in VS.NET designer. Hello. For the first time in my several years of C# coding, I'm actually trying to learn WPF. I know that everything I see on the XAML is vector-based. Since the most significant advantage of vector graphics is that they can be scaled without loss of graphic quality, I'd like to write an application whose entire window can be zoomed in and out as the user wants (I always have been hated applications in small windows...). Just like in the VS.NET designer. In VS.NET designer there is a scaler at the top-left corner, and the entire window can be zoomed in our out very easily. So, if I want to change the zoom level (I don't know this is the correct terminology) of my window at runtime, is there any quick and easy way to do that? I don't mean changing the size of the window and the layouts of the controls accordingly using some kind of layout manager. I mean the complete zoom just like we can do in VS.NET designer.     - StatusStrip control leaks its collection items The StatusStrip control leaks when you clear its Items collection. You can try the code below. Yes, this looks like an odd way to use a progress bar but I distilled this snippet from a moderately large application that was running out of user handles (10000 max) after some hours of use because of just this problem. Try it. Just make a form with a timer, a button, a label, and a StatusStrip. Push the button and you will see it leak user handles in the task manager. Workaround: Explicitly dispose each toolstrip item before clearing the collection. Set DONT_LEAK = True to do this. Is there a better way to solve the problem? Please tell me. The only chioce for us is to use ESRI libraries to generate map images. The issue is, current version of ESRI (ArvGIS 9.2) only support .net 2.0. I wrote a map component with Visual studio 2005, and check the "Register for COM interop" for the project. This creates both dll and tlb assemblies. I was not able to add this com component to my .net 2003 application as reference. When I tried to add the tlb file as the reference, I got the following error message: "A reference to "myMapCom" could not be added. Converting the type library to a .NET assembly failed.     - How to check if a directory is writable (without being virtualized.) Hi, I have an application that lets the user choose the storage directory for the data, and copies any existing data into it. I had assumed that trying to copy into a non-writable directory like Windows, would cause an exception, but it silently copys everything into the virtual store. The program then cannot find the data. (Why does virtualization only happen on writing? Surely if windows is smart enough to map a directory to the virtual store when writing it should also check the store when trying to open the file too!) Anyway, I would have preferred the exception to be raised. But even better would be a function that could tell me if the directory is truely writable (so I could prevent the user from selecting that directory). I looked in Directory and DirectoryInfo classes but didn't find anything. Trying to create a file inside the directory succeeds, but is stored in virtual store. I added the DLL into my project and trying to setup another class that inherits from Billing.CoreBillingReports class. I have to front pad them with 0's, and I have to write the decimal value 3.14 as "314".     - Detecting changes to app.config? I'm trying to write some code that will detect changes in a Windows Service app's .config file and reflect the modified appSetting entry in my code. We have a windows Service we've written and every once in a while we need to modify a setting in its .config file. Right now we restart the service whenever the config entry changes. We'd like to have the .config update be recognized automatically. It's easy enough to hang a FileSystemWatcher off the application's .config file to detect a change. In the event handler I am executing: ConfigurationManager.RefreshSection("appSettings") but this seems to have no effect. The value returned by subsequently referencing ConfigurationManager.AppSettings(<somekey>) is the original value, not the one just changed. Obviously, the value has been cached. The help for RefreshSection claims: "Refreshes the named section so the next time it is retrieved it will be re-read from disk." but this doesn't appear to work.     - app.config & FileSystemWatcher I'm trying to write some code that will detect changes in a Windows Service app's .config file and reflect the modified appSetting entry in my code. We have a windows Service we've written and every once in a while we need to modify a setting in its .config file. Right now we restart the service whenever the config entry changes. We'd like to have the .config update be recognized automatically. It's easy enough to hang a FileSystemWatcher off the application's .config file to detect a change. In the event handler I am executing: ConfigurationManager.RefreshSection("appSettings") but this seems to have no effect. The value returned by subsequently referencing ConfigurationManager.AppSettings(<somekey>) is the original value, not the one just changed. The help for RefreshSection claims: "Refreshes the named section so the next time it is retrieved it will be re-read from disk." but this doesn't appear to work. What am I doing wrong? I can't get keyboard events in a trivial WPF application, the keydown event doesn't seem to be fired. For people who still want the answer to this question. You can use a
MessageBox.Show() to create a dialog with a specified owner, text, window
title and yes and no buttons based on the parameters to that function.
