    - Warning messages in Tlbimp Hi, The COM+ Services type library (comsvcs.dll) strangely enough does not come with a primary interop. I need to use it in an assembly of mine that is signed, and it would not let me add it as a reference because the interop file that VS.NET 2003 produces is not strong named. Therefore, I am forced to create the signed interop assembly myself.     - Using binary data with process.standardInput/StandardOutput I am currently using the process class to successfully run .exe programs from my VB.NET app redirecting stdin and out. This works fine when the input and output streams are text. I tried applying the same logic to files that are not ASCII text -- they are PCL. Below is the code I am using for text input.     - PC thinks framework 1.0 is installed but it isnt Hi, For a number of reasons I needed to do a System Restore, but this was afer I had uninstalled all versions of dotnet. In trying to reinstall the frameworks, and then dev studio, I am getting problems. The dotnetfx tool for version 1.0 thinks that it is already installed, so it bombs out. There is no trace of 1.0 on my machine, and I suspect it could be somewhere else, such as the registry, thats causing the problem. Does anybody have any ideas how I can force dotnetfx to install the 1.0 framework? If not, do you know what settings I can kill to allow the check to go through so I can install 1.0?     - Q about Type.GetType() Hello, I hope this is the right forum for this question. I have a custom class in VB.Net. When I instantiate it and call class.GetType() it returns what I expect ie) AssemblyName.ClassName However if I try : Type.GetType("AssemblyName.ClassName") I get a TypeLoadException "Could Not Load Type". I have tried many different combinations of Name but It fails to load everytime. I feel I must be doing something wrong. I have checked all the references and they all seem to work. As mentioned, the class is successfully instantiated so one assumes that it can be loaded but the Type operator does not seem to work for me. What could I be doing wrong?     - Double Buffering and MyBase.OnPaint(pe) Hi, I have my custom Inherited DataGrid. I override the OnPaint-event to speed up things and avoid flikkering using Double Buffering. To draw the normal things of the DataGrid I have to call the MyBase.OnPain(pe). But in my opinion it doesn't seem to be painted on the buffer. Everything works fine, but I think it should work better if my MyBase.OnPaint also painted in my buffer. Am I wrong? And how should I do this? I kind of need to link the pe-argument to my g-object?     - Successive processing of URLs with HttpWebRequest I have a windows service which downloads .html pages by generating URLs and passing them to HttpWebRequest variable and after that calling the GetResponse() method. The requests are processed in a for cycle. Assuming the time for write operations on my Harddisk is negligible am I using the whole capacity of my internet connection, or is there a way to improve the speed of successive download ? So far, on my computer the service seems to use the whole capacity(around 24 KB/s), but when I start it on other machines (with 2MB/s connection) the results are much better when there are two(strangely not three or more) threads or services generating the requests.     - C# XML Documentation Tool I am trying to find a comprehensive addin for Visual Studio .Net 2003 that will help with documenting my code. In particular I am looking for a GUI of some kind that could make it easier (and faster) to supply more complete comments for multiple comment tags (<summary>, <seealso>, <exception>, <code>, <see>, etc). Mostly I am trying to find a way to document lines and lines of code with out having to type the tags, but instead just fill in the appropriate text in between as necessary.     - No touch Smart Client deployment with sound Hi there I have been writing a game engine for a client for use with the no-touch method of deployment. This means that the games can run, embedded in a web browser (IE). Web Games, if you will. The 3D GDI+ graphics engine is finished (100% managed code) and, surprisingly, the speed is acceptable. Here's a screenie: http://www.victory-road.co.uk/images/WebEngineScreens/WE5.gif Now I come to implement the sound. I wasn't expecting much, the ability to simply play MIDI and WAV files would be OK, but how? It appears that there is no sound support in the entire .NET framework. Is this a joke? Plenty of graphics facilities but not able to even create a beep? Surely not! Even simple Web pages can play sounds and music without raising a security exception! Why not Rich/Smart Client? The only information I've found on this is either to rely on .NET V2 (not even realeased until November) or resort to using DllImport of winmm.dll or others. Of course I cannot do this as this has to be 100% managed code to run in the sandboxed security either embedded in or linked to from a web page. Or am I wrong about that? Perhaps there is some way I can ask for extra permissions? It would only be some pre-existing unmanaged code, not even using pointers.     - 1.1 -> 1.0 framework side-by-side execution Hi, I understand how side-by-side should work - it both 1.0 and 1.1 frameworks are installed, 1.1 assembly should run against 1.1 framework and 1.0 assembly should run agains 1.0. This is what I don't clearly understand: 1. Mixing 1.1 and 1.0 assemblies I have 25 assemblies three of them are 1.1. What happens if 1.0 assembly calls 1.1? I have a weird situation when 1.1 assembly is trying to run against 1.0 framework. 2. Service components If 1.0 assembly is installed in COM+ catalog and I recompile it to 1.1, should I drop and re-register this assembly with regsvcs? 3. GAC If 1.0 assembly was in the GAC and I recompile it to 1.1, should I install this assembly into both 1.0 and 1.1 GACs or only into 1.1? 4.     - .NET console Application fails to execute from CMD.EXE I have vb.NET console application that I execute in batch from CDM.exe. When submitted via a 3rd party tool, or by hand myself, the application will sometimes return immediately with no error message just a command prompt. I can then arrow up to get the same command and press enter and it may run the second time. My main routine starts with a try, the first command in the try is a console.writeline, my traps log nothing, my console.writeline message does not appear, the application appears to be 'stillborn'.     - Smart Client requirements Can someone tell me if smart client development is bound to the compact framework or is it possible to build smart client with the standard framework? My understanding is that Smart client are for Online/Offline mode and can be easily deployed (no-touch deployment). This is surely over simplified but that's basically what I need to be able to do.     - Differences in .Resources files between Visual Studio 2005 beta1 a Our build system builds against the 1.1 .Net framework, but uses msbuild from Visual studio 2005. This allowed us to create ant style .csproj build scripts, which we couldn't do with Visual Studio 2003. All of this worked fine with Visual Studio 2005 beta1. When we were forced to upgrade, with no notice, our build system no longer worked. In beta 1 there was a tool called cfresgen.exe which has been removed and replaced with resgen.exe in beta2. The cfresgen allowed us to compile our .resx resources files and convert them to .resources files which could be used when building against the 1.1 framework. The new resgen tool which has superceded this will again allow us to do this compilation, however when the .resources files it generates are used within the 1.1 framework they fail.     - DataGrid Header Cuttoff Problem in Windows XP When the header text of DataGrid is Right aligned ,then the last few pixels of the header text is clipped off.I tried padding the text with a space or two but this seems to be trimmed before the text is rendered.     - No line number at top level of Stack trace Hi, I have an error dialog which shows the stack trace, usually without line numbers in the release version. To try to diagnose a particular problem, I have provided a user with a debug version of my program, and now line numbers do appear.     - OT: Project management question Hi, I am a .NET developer and I have been approached by a person with an idea to make some software for a niche market. Now, the deal is that I do the programming for the project (my expertise) based on the other persons recommendations (they have intricate knowledge of the market area). Also, we will be using the other persons contacts and market knowledge to sell the software. Now, what is the usual way of doing things here in respect to payment/ keepings things fair? e.g. Who owns the software? If we sell the software who gets what percentage (50/50 split)? Who pays for development costs or do I just work for free since the other person will be using their contacts and knowledge to sell the software?     - HttpWebRequest connecting to tivo webserver I am trying to write a little app that will parse my Tivo's Now Playing xml doc using ASP.NET (or winforms, i just want something to work at this point). Below is the code that I am using. What happens is that I get 401: Unauthorized when I call req.GetResponse(). But using the same url, username, password and accepting the cert manually in IE or firefox, I am able to access the url. Any insight as to what is happening would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking that this is a username/password problem because of the 401: Unauthorized response, but maybe it is a certificate problem?     - SerialPort and hardware flow control After some tests with a serial connection and the SerialPort class, I found out that in hardware flow control, you have to manually stop sending data when the CTS ligne goes low. I made some test and the SerialPort class doesn't seem to react to the CTS signal. If you tell to send 1000 bytes, it will send them no matter what the CTS level is. The only way I found to make all this works is by waiting for SerialPort.CtsHolding to become true and then send a single byte. And so on and so forth until the complete buffer is sent. I also found out that the Handshaking enumeration have a RequestToSend member but no "Hardware". So it really seems that the SerialPort class only handle automatically the RTS line and not the CTS line. Am I right or is there a way to tell the SerialPort class to handle the CTS signal, ie stop sending the bytes in the buffer momentarily until the CTS line is up?     - .Resources differences between Visual Studio 2005 beta1 and beta2 Our build system builds against the 1.1 .Net framework, but uses msbuild from Visual studio 2005. This allowed us to create ant style .csproj build scripts, which we couldn't do with Visual Studio 2003. All of this worked fine with Visual Studio 2005 beta1. When we were forced to upgrade, with no notice, our build system no longer worked. In beta 1 there was a tool called cfresgen.exe which has been removed and replaced with resgen.exe in beta2. The cfresgen allowed us to compile our .resx resources files and convert them to .resources files which could be used when building against the 1.1 framework. The new resgen tool which has superceded this will again allow us to do this compilation, however when the .resources files it generates are used within the 1.1 framework they fail.     - marshal complex structures to native C dll Hi All, I have a problem with marshaling complex structures (containing numbers, strings, arrays of another structures) to native C function in dll. I have already posted same question to .compactframework thread, but nobody helped. main problem is that I have tried all the workarounds I have found in the Inet but nothing worked... I tried passing IntPtr, Byte Arrays, Serialisation, even used OpenNETCF, but all failed. I have even compiled own C dll (eVC 4.0) with same structures and functions, and there I can see what is passed in params and can return needed values.     - OnStop timing out, service manager terminating process? I have a C# service that spawns multiple worker processes which it controls through remoting. The worker processes call 3rd party, unsafe components, which can and do bahave badly, and will eat memory and stall, or just hang on occasion. So now I've run into a problem where I want OnStop to attempt to shutdown the worker processes cleanly, wait for a short period and finally terminate the worker processes with Process.Kill if they don't respond. The problem seems to be that the service manager will stop the service, OnStop will execute for 30-60 seconds, and the service manager simply terminates the service process before it can kill the worker processes. When this happens, I end up with rogue worker processes that are consuming resources and difficult to kill. Is there any way to figure out how long I can wait? Is there any way to extend the shutdown time, by sending status to the service manager? I can't seem to find any documentation on how long OnStop is allowed to execute, and it seems to terminate the service process at varying times in my shutdown process. I am testing Microsoft Enterprise Library - June 2005 Exception Handling, and I am trying to pass parameters to HandleException Method, and recieve it in my implementation of the abstract class. However, it seems that the HandleException can only implement: public abstract Exception HandleException( Exception exception, string policyName, Guid handlingInstanceId And that you can not add your own override implementation. I don't believe so, unfortunately - at least, I don't believe there's
an officially recognised way of doing so. I expect there are ways you
*can* target 1.1, but I'd expect them to be as hacky as targetting 1.1
from VS.NET 2002. Personally, I think it's a bit of a crippling problem
with VS 2005 which I really, really hope gets fixed before it ships.
