    - Good Cheap Installation Software?? Hi, Was wondering anybody could help? I'm looking an application to help deploy my Windows Form application. I've been using the built in installer in VS.NET 2005, but I want to package all the files up into one exe (this includes the prerequisites!).     - .NET based services not starting reliably: ServiceController.Start() method We're using the ServiceController class provided by the .NET Framework, programming in C#. We are using the Start() method to start a service from another service. This works fine most of the time, but occasionally after a system startup (where the service doing the starting of the other is automatically started by Windows XP) the ServiceController's Start() method fails to start the other service. It is probably throwing an InvalidOperationException in these cases (we know it is in some cases). Is there any way to tell why Windows cannot start the service, and are there known problems with the reliability of the Start() method? It works most of the time, but occasionally after unsealing the XP OS, or after a restart, this fails. We're trying retries of calls to the Start() method, but after 3 retries it still fails inexplicably. We need to find out if: 1.. this is a known problem 2.. how long does it wait, and is this wait time adequate? 3.. can this happen if one of the services upon which the service being started depends takes too long to start? We are quite sure the actual service being started takes almost no time to execute its two lines that consist of starting a worker thread in its OnStart() method. 4.. is there some reason this would only occur after an unseal or system restart (that's the only time we see it)? 5.. there are any known fixes or workarounds to this problem Tag: convert java web application into .NET application.     - Thread Detach Notification Hi, Is there a way in managed .NET to get a notification as to when a thread exits normally? In the unmanaged world, you could handle the DLL_THREAD_DETACH in DllMain( ), but I couldn't find anything in .NET that gives you this notification. I could iterate through the list of available threads in the process to find if a particular thread Id is still alive, but that would not work for my implemenation. Thanks.     - problem with .net framework 2.0 and 1.1 I have an application that runs a DLL written in Delphi .net. My Dll runs well only on .net framework 1.1 and NOT 2.0. The problem is that my main application runs few DLLs some need to run on framework 1.1 and some on 2.0 - so I cant specify on the exe.config to run on 1.1 (<supportedRuntime>) - b.c then other dlls wont run well.     - AppDomain Shadow copy and plugin framework models PLEASE HELP! =0 Ok, I've been quite successful on my own building a plugin framework that appears to be working quite well. I can manually unload/reload etc, however, the original app domain is retaining a lock on the shadowcopied assembly. I've done a fair ammount of research before resorting to this. My model is like the following. ------------- -------------- --------------- PluginLoader RemoteLoader MyPlugin:IPlugin ------------- -------------- --------------- plugincollection LoadPlugins LoadPlugins Basically, I instantiate a plugin loader which creates a new appdomain with setup info for shadow copying etc. It instantiates remoteloader with a plugin path. LoadPlugins on PluginLoader calls LoadPlugins which returns a IPluginCollection which is a collection of instantiated types etc. I beleive my problem is that because I set a local var in my app to return value from pluginLoader.LoadPlugins that its hanging on to the original files. How could I remedy this situation? I'd like to be able to delete/overwrite dlls on the fly. How do you guys do it?     - Need to install 1.1, already have 2.0 I have a dll that a co-worker wrote which needs .NET 1.1 to work. The server I am installing it on already has 2.0, probably installed when I put SQL Server 2005 there. I cannot make this dll work on any machine that has .NET 2.0 on it. However, if I go into IIS and tell my default web site (which uses this dll) to point to .NET 1.1, it works. I don't have the time right now to look into why it works in 1.1 and not 2.0. What I'd like to do is have 1.1 on this server. However, for some reason, 1.1 doesn't show up in the IIS dropdown; only 2.0 does. When I try to install 1.1 from an exe I downloaded some time ago.     - Visual Studio 2005 Versions I just finished up a large project using VS 2003 and am moving onto one requiring VS 2005. I've read up on what is included in the different versions and here's my issue. The Professional edition comes the closest to what I need (ALL the languages, mobile device support & Crystal Reports), but I also need the Office development support in the "Visual Studio Tools for Office" version. I don't suppose the Office development support is sold as an add-on?? If not, has anyone bought both versions and tried installing them on the same computer??     - FTPWebRequest Fails on Some FTP Sites I posted this problem a week ago, and received no response, so here it is again... While using FTPWebRequest, I have found at least one FTP site where this function fails. The URI I am using is ftp://nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov/md_doc/app_a.doc This NASA ftp site is available through anonymous log in, and other FTP clients, including Internet Explorer using FTP protocols, download the file just fine. As the capture below shows, when FTPWebRequest sends PWD, it receives ANON_DIR:[000000] from the ftp site. Then when FTPWebRequest sends CWD ANON_DIR:[000000]/md_doc/ it receives an error of 550, then it gives up and closes the connection. Any advice on this would be helpful. I have a Windows service application with a public class that inherits from System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase Is it possible to modify this application so that it still is a Windows service but on the other hand can be started just as if it were a standard Windows Forms application (e.g. by double clicking the .exe file)? Background: I would like to deliver a .exe file to the user who then double clicks it. The application then offers a UI with options to install itself as service.     - ManagementOperationObserver and Get( observer ) The following illustrates a problem I have in another program ... however it only occurs on one in 5,000 remote machines. I suspect the cause of the problem lies with the remote machine ... but why doesn't my client time out with an exception ? The Get() method that initialises the asynchronous operation blocks for way too long (I've not seen it give up). Most of the time one will get an error of some sort, RPC not available, Access Denied, COM is stuffed, etc ... but when it hangs it's gone ... and it's repeatable against the machine ... but you have to find the right machine. Needless to say I've got a hugely multithreaded scanner trying to do all this scanning for real ... but when one of the remote machines block this initialisation ... then I'm stuffed. I've unsatisfactorily tried to set up another thread to maintain a timeout and abort the thread if it hangs too long during this method. Note this method doesn't retrieve the data ... merely set's up the operation ... so I believe. I've not verified that the problem occurs in synchronous mode ... but wbemtest.exe does have the same issue ... which isn't a .Net app ... so I suspect this is a COM or WMI server issue. It works the fine time I run it but then when I run it again straight away it fails with..     - Optimization needed... Is Assembly code available? Hi, I need to optimize a close loop. Usually I would use assembly, but I don't event know if it's available to VB.NET. I'll explain the case and maybe some of you will be able to advise me. I have a byte() (byte array) containing about 100,000 elements (a bit less, but always is around 80,000-95,000). I need to take the data from it as int16 and compare the int16 to a reference value for now, I'm using a MemoryStream created from the byte(), a BinaryReader that reads from the MemoryStream (ReadInt16) and then compare the int16 to a reference value and return false if the int16 is greater than the reference value. if all the values are lower than the reference value, then the function returns true. If it returns after the first loop or so, it's ok, but if it runs through all the elements it's way too long. In assembly it would take way less time than that, because I could move the reference value in one of the CPU's register and leave it there as long as my loop runs and iterate directly in the byte() to get 2 bytes at a time. In VB.NET it's a function that stands in about 10 lines of code (maybe even lower), but it takes up to 50% of the CPU (when looked in the task manager) which is way too much because it runs very often. When it does not run (many other things are running in the app), the app takes about 1%-2% of the CPU, when this close loop starts being called, the app get's to 30%-50% of the CPU... it's a bit excessive due to the fact that the function is called about 8-10 times a second. thanks for your help ThunderMusic Tag: convert java web application into .NET application. I have a .net service on a Win2003 server box that periodically attempts to move files from a local path to a UNC path on another Win2003 server box. I use System.IO.File.Move to accomplish this task.     - Framework Unregistered after Reboot Hi, There are three workstations in the group where I work that are constantly having the .NET framework uninstalled if we reboot. In order to get the local ASP.NET applications running again we have to run aspnet_regiis -i and iisreset. The question is what could be causing this? There is group policy in effect, perhaps Active Directory could be causing this? Any recent viruses that would cause this behaviour? I did a full scan that turned up nothing... This is what we are doing, in our VB.NET Project we have an MDI form, and a child form class called frmConfigBrowser. We instantiate this base class twice, using declarations like this in the MDI form: private withevents frmConfigEditor as frmConfirgBrowser private withevents frmConfigBrowser1 as frmConfirgBrowser When the user clicks the menu item to open a data file for editing, we instantiate the first variable, when they select to open a file for reading, we instantiate the second variable. But form events are only recognized for the first one we load... so clicking a listbox on the first one changes another listbox, but a click on the listbox of the second form loaded is ignored. The problem is that i do not know how to propagate the Object Context from the Main thread to the 2 subThreads.     - MyApplication has encountered a problem... when not Administrator! Hi, Something strange is happing with my Windowf Forms application (VB.NET 2005): The users had all local Administrator-rights on there pc. We changed it to the 'normal' users, and now they can't run our V.NET application anymore! The application starts (you can see the screen and caption etc), and than they get the well known error "MyApplication has encountered a problem and needs to close" with the "send error report"-button etc. When we change their rights back to PowerUser ou Administrator, it works again... Does anybody get any idea why this happens? And how to find a solution? Do they need some special rights on something?     - gradual slow down Hey guys... I have a question regarding performance of windows forms.. Is it normal behaviour for a windows form to gradually become slower and slower as more stuff gets loaded? I have a tab control on my form which when the user selects a tab i dynamically load a selection of controls to go onto the tabpage.. I have monitored this with the QueryPerformance API and the results show that as more controls get loaded and place onto the form, it starts to slow down dramatically, 3 times slower plus then the orginal time. Could I be doing something wrong or is this the way windows forms works... I understand why it could slow down, but i ened to know a way around it... (My process at one stage was taking up to 30 seconds to generate content... I have since revised my structure and got it down to approx 4-5 seconds... I still need it faster... I would like almost instant.... My times now start out about 60 ms per each control group (being about 6 controls of labels textboxes and checkboxes and a selectlistbox) and then by the end (about 6 groups) is upto about 300ms. these controls arnt "grouped" as such but are just controls in a particular section of my form. I am using vs2005. The tab control has a panel as the main container which all the controls go in. (this panel stays small until the end of the generating process, then a resize the panel.) I set "e.HasMorePages = True" after completeing the first page in the "PrintDocument1_PrintPage" subroutine, and then "exit sub". When "PrintDocument1_PrintPage" is called for the second page, it skips to the code to print the second page and then returns, setting "e.HasMorePages = False". Everything seems to work however, when I look at my printout the second page overwrites the first page. You could have also asked how to write an operating system from scratch.

Such a question can hardly be answered in a newsgroup, especially not with
the overwhelming amount of information you've provided ;-)
