 - How to Activator.CreateInstance a Type from within an other assembly? Hi! I have a project with a Dll and a exe. My dll has a set of functions that can activate some classes (these classes have all the same interface defined in the dll). That works fine with classes that are defined inside the Dll, but when I want to activate a class defined in my exe (which references the dll) the Type cannot get loaded.  - Critical Update Wont Install Hi All, I am fairly new to Win2K Pro or Win 2K for that matter. I have a fairly new system with much installed on it and have been playing with VS VB.net recently. Well Windows Updates says that there is a critical update for the .NET framework. I am hoping this will fix my VS problems. Microsoft .NET Framework Service Pack 2, English Version So I tried to install it. Well it took seconds to download and then installed really slow. About 2.5 hours. And even the progress bar was completed for about 30 minutes but it never actually completed the install and exited. So I killed it and of course it was not installed. So I went through the trouble of downloading it and running it manually. The install acted the same way. I tried clearing out much stuff from boot and then installing and no affect. I tried installing in safe mode but that would not work because I could not get the installer service to run. What the heck is happening? What should I do? Somebody sugested downloading it from: http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/a/c/aac39226-8825-44ce-90e3-bf8203e74006/dotnetfx.exe And I was able to download it and install it....Kind of???? If I go to windows update now it still shows that Microsoft .NET Framework Service Pack 2, English Version needs to be installed. And when I run VS and look at the about dialog. There is a spot that says Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 version 1.0.3705 So is it actually installed? And just to take this a step further I was really trying to this patch because I though it might fix my problem. Everytime I try to use Debug Start VS just locks up.  - Run script before the debug. Hello, I'm programming in VS .NET 2003 a window application by using C# language. I was configured 3 modes (Debug, Release and Testing). My intention to run few commands as RemoveDir,MakeDir and Copy files from directory to another. I can run those commands as .BAT file but the difficult is running that .BAT file. The condition is that if I build/run the application in debug mode the .BAT file will be excuted otherwise it won't. I know there is a property which called "Pre-build Event Command Line" but unfortunately it's not consider with the active mode. My questions are : 1.  - Problem with registering VB DLLs. Please help urgently.... I need to register a Vb DLL under restricted acess privilages please provide me a solution. Here is the complete issue: I building a MSI using Vs.net ,One of the Dll's is Vb Component ( A shim component basically) , Our application has to install both with Administrative privialges and restricted user privilages . The actual problem is that of registering this dll ,Since it tries to register under Hkey_local_machine ,But under restricted user privilages we do not have access to Hkey_local_machine so we have to register under Hkey_Current_user. I am trying to export the registry of the DLL and add it to my setup so that it can be exported to the target machine but i am still not been able to get it to work Please do provide me with more information on this.  - Why isnt ContextBoundObject an interface? Hello, I was looking at the ContextBoundObject implementation and saw that this class does nothing more than call the MarshalByRefObject's constructor in its constructor. That tells me that ContextBoundObject is some sort of marker that tells the rest of the framework that the class that inherits it has a bound context. Unfortunately, c# only has single inheritance, which means you can't inherit from a class and get the benefits of a ContextBoundObject. Wouldn't an interface be a better choice? It would allow you to inherit from another class while using ContextBinding. Is this a "design choice" to force the developer to use aggregration if she wants to use build upon a class that was not meant to be ContextBound?  - A bug in xsd.exe and XMLSerialization Dear, I have used xsd.exe tool to generate a class from a schema. Then I used XMLSerializer to deserialize an xml file using that class, changed some values, and serialized it back to a new xml file. Error occurs here, the new file has some attribute missing which I have not changed anything about it. The missing attribute in the original schema is defined like this: <xsd:attribute name="country" type="xsd:NMTOKEN" fixed="US" /> because of the error occured, I changed the schema into the following: <xsd:attribute name="country" type="xsd:NMTOKEN" use="required" /> Then it works! Hello, Could someone tell me under what conditions the following exception occurs with async sockets: "System.ArgumentException: The IAsyncResult object was not returned from the corresponding synchronous method on this class." This is being thrown from within the callback that is specified to Socket.BeginReceive (happens rarely, but still does happen) I see only 1 reference to this exception on the whole web, which is not answered either. The steps are very simple, start() { Socket.BeginReceive(ReadCallback) } ReadCallback() { Socket.EndReceive Socket.BeginReceive } One case that i noticed where this happens is when code is still executing inside ReadCallback and socket gets disconnected then reconnected and another Socket.BeginReceive is scheduled while previous ReadCallback didn't return yet.  - Install error with Windows 98 Printshop 20 requires .NET framework 1.1. I tried to download and install it from the windows update site. When I rebooted the computer it wouldn't load windows 98 and ended with a black screen and the words *While initializing device IOS: ERROR: Real mode system memory allocation failed.* Had to reinstall windows 98 to use the computer again.  - interfaces overused or used correctly? am a bit baffled as to why someone would take this approach in all of our classes within the project I am currently working on. Maybe someone else could attempt to explain the following approach: public class Class1 : IClass1 { protected Class1() { } public static IClass1 GetInstance() { return (IClass1) new Class1(); } } For every class in our system, there is an interface defined. Instead of using a constructor, we use a GetInstance method that calls new on our class but casts the return value to the interface's type. What advantages does this design approach have?  - Changes in version 1.1 Sorry for this repost, but I have registered with Microsot as a MSDN suscriber and I have been asked to repost. I have been using a custom sink that sends the current client thread's principal and instantiates it in the server thread succesfully in framework 1.0 Now in framework 1.1 I have the problem that the principal gets instantiated after calling the constructor method of my server component. In version 1.0 the constructor was called after the ProcessMessage where the principal is instantiated. This is a problem for me because the constructor uses the current principal to do some stuff.  - reflection event enumeration Can someone point me to a resource that demonstrates how to enumerate through public events (and delegates) retrieving the names for a class? My objective is as follows: a) at runtime, input an assembly name and instantiate an object of that type (this works). b) enumerate through the public events on that object and using the name for each event instantiate a delegate and event info object, adding a local event handler with the same signature.  - Re: Language Patchs Have several PC's in a coorporate enviornemnt. My problem is adding the Keyboard input local in Russian. It appears all of the Languages are listed alphabeltical however when I get to Portgeise it jump to Spanish. I don't have Romanian or Russian. Having problems locating Russian to install it.  - TCPIP sending a message that contains binary and string I need to send a message via TCPIP that contains a two byte binary length of the message, 6 bytes of spaces and then the text message. The type initializer for the TCPClient socket threw an exception when I used the NetworkStream.write method. I've been able to do this in VB6, but need to re-write this under .net. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this using VB.Net?  - Change DataRow Column Type I want to be able to change the Column Type in a Dataset from the imported data type which is Integer to data type string. The reasoning for this is due to the fact that in the relational database I store an integer in place of the string due to relationships between the tables in the database. When I fill the dataset the column is then an integer but what I need to display in the column is the string that is associated with the integer in the table relationship.  - Visual Studio .NET Toolbox disabled in all applications I have developed with Visual Studio .NET on the same PC for around 9 months now. I upgraded from VS.NET 2002 to VS.NET 2003 about 3 months ago no problems and since then I have continued coding, compiling and releasing mostly ASP.NET and Windows Forms applications. My workstation is Windows XP Sp1 with all the latest critical security patches/upgrades installed from Windows Update. This week I noticed that the VS.NET ToolBox with the standard components on it (textbox, label etc.) was disabled - that is all the items on it are greyed out and cannot be dragged onto the designer for a windows form. This is the same with all the "tabs" on the ToolBox, no matter what application is open, and whatever state (designer/code/html) it is in, including ASP.NET applications, and in all of my old applications as well as new ones. I use Visual SourceSafe as well - version 6.0d, but files are checked out and writeable when I am editing them. I have tried running the visual studio .NET setup CD in repair mode, and also reinstalling .NET Framework SP2 out of desperation - does anyone know what on earth this could be? What might I install to fix the problem? Or is it likely to be a corruption that requires a complete uninstall/reboot/reinstall (this will take a full day on my PC - it's not slow but the installation script is VERY slow!)  - Changes in version 1.1 Sorry for this repost, but I have registered with Microsot as a MSDN suscriber and I have been asked to repost. I have been using a custom sink that sends the current client thread's principal and instantiates it in the server thread succesfully in framework 1.0 Now in framework 1.1 I have the problem that the principal gets instantiated after calling the constructor method of my server component. In version 1.0 the constructor was called after the ProcessMessage where the principal is instantiated. This is a problem for me because the constructor uses the current principal to do some stuff.  - web garden parameter affects on aspnet_wp process We've recently set the web garden value to True, on a two processor system, and have noticed that since that change we now have two aspnet_wp processes running. Is that because we are now taking advantage of both processors? If we add this parameter setting to a 4 processor system will we see 4 aspnet_wp processes? I'm asking because during some of your deployments, we need to recycle the aspnet_wp process and will need to update the documentation to reflect why there are multiple of these processes now.  - Embedded Resource Id? I have a class project with an icon included and also a .resources file which also includes an icon. I need the resource Id to allow the host to extract the icon from the assembly, but cannot work out how to reference the .resources icon. For example the ico file in my project has a filename of MyIcon.ico, and by using ildasm I cane get the resource Id quite easily. The manifest includes - .mresource public SQLDTS.MyIcon.ico { } ..where SQLDTS is my project namespace. So I can use the resource id of "SQLDTS.MyIcon.ico" and it works a treat. However the .resources file also has an icon with the "name" of "MyIcon" as set using ResEditor.exe, but looking in the manifest I can only see this- .mresource public SQLDTS.MyRes.resources { } How do I reference the individual icon? I have tried various incarnations of SQLDTS.MyRes.resources.MyIcon and such like without luck. How do I get resource Id? I want the old style resource Id, they all used to be 101!
