Windows Services, COM objects and user accounts
We have a windows service that runs under SYSTEM which launches a COM object.
Is there any way that an application running under a user account can access
that COM object, and if so, how is it done ? Currently, we get an automation
error whenever the user application attempts to access the COM object.

Hello,
I am developing an application on my system which has .NET framewor 1.1
(English) installed. Then I am trying to run the same application on my
another system which has .NET 1.1 (German) installed. Now the problem is
there are few operations with decimal nos. I mean (5.0 + 3.6) and so on...
But these operartions are performed as 50+36 as in europe we use ,(comma) to
seperate nos. Now my problem is how can I make my app universal given these
constraints?

Datagrid with checkbox ( multi selection)
Hi,
I trying to create a datagrid that allows multi selection. So I created a
first checkbox column where the user will click selecting the row.
But in runtime, the checkboxes from this column are always disabled.
I tried adding a new column in the datatable and adding a new style
column in the datagrid. The result is always the same.

Sleeping thread problem when closing app
I use Thread.Sleep to cause my background threads to for 500ms. The
structure of the thread is:

...
Thread.Sleep(500);
} while (!closing)
Now my problem is that occassionally when my application is exiting it just
hangs and won't close. In my FormClosing event I have the following code:
closing = true;
backgroundThread.Interrupt();
backgroundThread.Abort();
But it doesn't seem to stop the problem. And when the background thread
doesn't sleep the problem doesn't occur, but its not an option because CPU
usage is high if it doesn't sleep.
How do I fix this?

Combo Box Selected Value changed event Gives Unhandleed exception.
Hey All,
What we are trying to achieve is, when Selected value changed event is fired
for a combo box, then we are trying to close the current form and display the
new form. The forms are mdi child of a MDI form named as MasterForm.
The code being used to close the current form and open the new form is as
follows:
lForm = new TestForm
lForm.MdiParent = Me.MdiParent
lForm.Show()
Me.Close()
Problem is on Selected value changed event, we get an unhandled exception,
Object reference not set to an instance of Object. I debugged and found that
while closing the current form, its throwing the error.
Can anyone please suggest this behaviour, is it a known issue.

Errror With mscorlib.dll - Please Help me
Everytime I Use ImageList Control to add Image that has more than 256Bits
colours and then an Exception throws at the line:

All I have to do is create new Windows Application Project, then add an
ImageList Control to the form and then add an image likes 16bit colors to
Imagelist. Then Run.
When Run, an Run-time exception has thrown, the contain of exception:
An unhandled exception of type 'System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException'
occurred in mscorlib.dll
Additional information: Exception has been thrown by the target of an
invocation.
After that, every time I try to run Search in Windows Explorer, it returs
errror:
Unexpected Errors
Action could not be completed.
Anyone can show me how to solve this problem. I'm in hurry

Hi all, I have a DAL which takes in a value as shown below ready for my
MSSQL stored procedure.

I have a problem where when I try to pass in information from a textbox on a
ASP.NET page OR Winform the *damn* thing gets rounded to an Integer!
I thought I could just go..

Where AnnualLeave.Text is the value of my textbox on my form, but I received
"Cannot convert type 'string' to 'System.Data.SqlTypes.SqlDecimal" error
(Which is fair enough)
So, I tried
((System.Data.SqlDecimal)(Convert.ToDecimal(AnnualLeave.Text))
but for some reason, this rounds the number to an integer!! e.g. 12.2
becomes 12!!!!!
Can someone please tell me what am I doing wrong here, it's been a long day

Custom Compile Time Attributes?
I am trying to implment some business level user authorization in my current
.net 1.1 app. In C#, I would like to do something like:

But then have this code changed at compile time to something like:

SaveFileDialog
Hello,
I am programmatically creating a System.Windows.Forms.SaveFileDialog.
Everything works fine, however, I want to be able to detect when somebody
changes the filter property. Basically, I want to know when the file
extension is changed by the user so that I can automatically update the
filename property to have this extension at the end of the filename.
However, I can't seem to find some type of onfilterchange event to handle
this.
Does anybody have any ideas?

Im doing something really stupid here, But I cant see the wood for the
trees. This is some of the code for my custom composite control. It renders
fine and the buttons do cause a Post to occur. But the Click Handlers are

C# compiler included?
Is the C# compiler included in the dot net framework for all users?
I am considering the development of a new "platform" for financial
institution simulation models used for risk management. To provide
flexibility, the platform needs to allow the user to write a small amount of
program code. I can include a compiler with the platform but would prefer to
simply use the C# compiler if it is already present on the computer of any
user with dot net installed.
So is the C# compiler included as part of the dot net framework?

Start application from service
Hello everyone,
I am writing a Windows service (in VB.net) that requires the assistance of a
separate "helper" executable. I would like for the service to be able to
automatically start the helper exe when the service starts, and likewise, to
be able to stop the helper exe when the service stops. The catch is that the
helper exe must run under the account of the current user and not under
Local System or Local Service.
I know I can do the following to start the helper in OnStart:
Process1.StartInfo.FileName = "C:\windows\notepad.exe" ' Example exe
Process1.StartInfo.UserName = My.User.Name
Process1.StartInfo.CreateNoWindow = False
Process1.Start()
But notepad.exe will run under the same account as the service (and not
under My.User.Name). I can't add Process1.StartInfo.Password to that because
I don't know the user's password.
Any suggestions/comments as to how I may be able to accomplish this are

Memory handling & loading/unloading DLLs
Hello,
I would like to know how exactly works loading/unloading of libraries in
.NET (1.1). I have an assembly X which references assembly Y. If no type from
Y is used and no method to Y is called, is Y loaded ? May a dll be ever
unloaded ? And how it works if managed code uses unmaneged libraries ?
The background of my question is that we are currently solving crashing of
our application written in .NET which uses DB2 Data managed provider from
HIS2004. We have DataAccess layer which is able to use SQL Server or/and DB2.
The functionality for DB2 is never used in the application, so DB2 Data
provider assembly and I expect no one of its dependant native modules from
HIS should be loaded. But using Debugging Tools for Windows and ADPlus script
shows that those DLLs are unloaded. Later then, in logging library is used
call System.Diagnostic.Process.GetCurrentProcess().ProcessName to get process
name used in log entry. This call causes handling of some performance
counters probably in the unloaded DLLs. This is what we got from memory dump.
There is no mention about Performance counters logic in porperty ProcessName
in MSDN. However, with this knowledge I found the dependency on Performance
counters by Google. But still I'd like to know the library handling in .NET.

Uploading to a web from windows.forms application

I need to upload files programatically from a windows.forms application to a
web server hosting my domain. the web server dosen't have asp installed this
has to be done purely from the client end without any assistance from any
programs on the server end
so my app should be able to:

I have a program that is printing PDFs and to check that the PDF is complete
we run the following code after we are done printing.

computers.

HTML Encoded Email
I used to use the old CDO.Message.CreateMHTMLBODY() method to encode a web
page and send it as an email. Encoding HTML is pretty simple but when you
have associated images CDO.Message was the way to go.
I never found an easy way to do this with version 1.x of the framework. Is
there anything in 2.0 that will do this or do I still need to interop with
CDO?

SecurityException on AppDomain.CreateInstanceAndUnWrap
I am getting a SecurityException on calling
AppDomain.CurrentDomain.CreateInstanceAndUnwrap. The type referenced in the
call is in a referenced assembly. I cannot seem to get the SecurityException
to go away unless I use FullTrust. However, I don't see anywhere that this
is a documented security requirement.

Drawing to Multi-monitor independent display
How does one draw an image to an independent display (dual-monitor) using
.NET Framework code? In the application the OnPaint method is overridden so
that the modified image can be manipulated before drawn to the screen. The
application is a screensaver, so this needs to cover the independent displays
as well as the primary displays.
The image stretches on dual monitors where the second monitor is an
extension of the desktop, but ignores the dual monitors that are configured
as "independent" displays.
What I would like to accomplish is two-fold: (1) Make the same image appear
on all the monitors sized to only the screen dimensions regardless of whether
or not the second monitor extends the normal desktop, and (2) detect whether

New To AppDomains, want to load assembly, read attributes, then release reference (unload AppDomain)
OK. Here's my situation:
I am developing a VS addin that mucks around with assembly-level Attributes.
Since I can't get at them via the CodeModel interfaces if they're in the
AssemblyInfo.vb (or can I?), I decided to inspect them using reflection once
the assembly is built. The problem is (as I'm sure has come up numerous
times) that once I've loaded the assembly using Assembly.LoadFile(), the
current AppDomain (my Addin) locks the assembly, making it impossible to
build it again until the addin is unloaded.
So I heard about loading just they raw bytes of the assembly. OK, tried
that. worked beautifully until I came across an assembly that was Strong
Named and signed. That gave me SecurityExceptions every time in that case.
I'm afraid I don't know too much about Evidence (or at least providing it in
such a way that I can apply it to loading the raw bytes of the assembly).
Any help there would be appreciated as well, for I am curious about this
subject.
So I heard about creating secondary AppDomains to read assemblies/types. I
created a supporting DLL with a single class that inherited from
MarshalByRefObject and was marked as Serializable. It had one method to load
an assembly via Reflection to inspect it, and three readonly properties (1
Boolean, 2 String) representing the values inspected from the assembly.
Follow so far?
OK, so I reference my new support DLL in my addin project. I create a new
AppDomain using AppDomain.CreateDomain() with an AppDomainSetup object. So
far, OK. I use the CreateInstanceAndUnwrap() method to create an instance of
my class in the support DLL. That returns me an object, but not of the type
I specified. When I try to cast it back to the original class type, I get an
InvalidCastException.
So I do some research. I see numerous articles/blogs/postings about very
similar situations but I can't seem to find a resolution. Most of the
research seems to point to Suzanne Cook's Blog, but being a noob to this
kind of thing, all of that is way over my head for now.
My best guess is that the type I have referenced in my assembly is different
than the type created by CreateInstanceAndUnwrap(). Is that because the
AppBasePaths are different? I specified the same path information int the
AppDomainSetup object by referencing the supporting class type from my
addin. Bear in mind all this fails before I even get to load the assembly
that the supporting class will process.
What am I doing stupidly, if anything? Am I just not getting it? Am I not
doing something right? Help me! :(

FtpWebRequest Passive Mode Problem
Hi all,
There appears to be a problem with the .NET 2.0 class FtpWebRequest in the
following circumstance (an example):
1.) FTPD runs on port 21 on ip 192.168.0.2
2.) On issuing PASV command the data connection reply string gives IP !=
192.168.0.2
So, when the data connection IP is different to the control connection IP
the application throws a WebException helpfully informing me that this is the
case.
Is there any way to change this behaviour?

PropertyGrid and embedded structs... odd behaviour
Ok... I've just spend my entire friday to see how propertygrids and structs
are supposed to work. Whenever I create an instance of a class which has a
struct embedded, and I set the SelectedObject of my propertygrid to that
instance, I cannot seem to successfully change values of that embedded
struct, values are constantly reset. If I set the SelectedObject directly to

Framework 2.0 redist ASP.Net snapin not showing up
I just installed the framework 2.0 on windows 2003 server, and it seemed to
install ok, but when I go in the IIS Manager and right click the website and
do properties, I do not see the asp.net tab, why is this? Also, the
installation did not map my existing asp.net applications to the new version,
is this version not compatible with 1.1 so it won't map it? Any thoughts? I
can't find much documentation on the production framework 2.0, does anyone
know where it is?

log4net questions interop and custom output
Hello,
My group is considering using the log4net framework for logging. I'm hoping
someone here can give me some feedback on some questions.
Our application will need to log messages from both managed and unmanaged
code. To log messages from the unmanaged side, can we still use log4net?
Should we use log4xx instead? How messy would it be to simultaneously use
two different implemenations (log4net and log4xx) of what is really the same
logging framework? Should we consider using a different logging framework
altogether, say EntLib?
I also have a question about customizing output. The faq says that you can
customize by implementing an ILayout interface. What we want to do is log
both application diagnositic information as well as domain specific
information. For example, we are working on a physical access application.
When someone uses a prox card and walks through a door, you might want to
log the user id, card id, timestamp, door, etc. Not class names or calling
threads. Is it easy (or even possible) to define the different types
information that you want log? Then, based on user preferences, can you
control which of those types show up in a logging file?

Total Cookies for A URI (HttpWebRequest)
There are two persistent cookies, c1 and c2, already on my PC in a txt
file, for a particular URI. I do a HttpWebRequest and a new cookie,
c3, is set by the web server, and c1 is also updated with a new value
by the web server. I now need to find out the total latest cookies. I
would like to consult all whether the steps below are the correct way.
I instantiate a new CookieContainer, CC, and CC.Add(c1) and CC.Add(c2).
I then assign CC to the CookieContainer property of the
HttpWebRequest.
I do a .GetResponse(). The Response.Cookies collection gives me c3 and
c1. The collection in CC.GetCookies(uri) now contains: old c1, c2, c3
and new c1.
I then have to find some means to identify the old c1 and get rid of
it.
Is there a more efficient way than the above of finding all the cookies
for a URI?

Authenticate users in Unix using C#
Hi all,
does anyone has an idea of how to do this?
We have a authentication engine, that would also support Unix users to
authenticate in Unix, I was thinking in connecting to the Unix machine
and when if sent the wrong user name or password an error would be
returned and I would not authenticate the user.
Is this possible?

Mysterious MSMQ exception
Does anyone know what the MSMQ exception "Error occurs when reading from a
queue on a remote computer." means? It is explained nowhere. I get this
exception in the BeginReceive callback and loose(!) every message which
raises this exception. There is only one newsgroup where this exception is
mentioned

Datagrid binding with CheckBox
Hi,
I'm Roby Eisenbraun Martins.
I am trying to create a datagrid with a checkbox to select the fields and
the data from a datatable(dataset).
I tried following the Microsoft Help, but it doesn't work. Creating a new
bool style column in the datagrid without a mapping valid value from the
datatable doesn't appear in the datagrid.
So i tried creating a new column in the table before binding. All the
checkboxes column appear, but disabled. With no changes at all.
Please help!

I am having troubles saving configuration file.
I did the folloing: inherited from ConfigurationSection,
ConfigurationCollection, ConfigurationElement to define my own element in
config file.
If I do the following:

everything works fine, I can save and load the settings on the next run.
Hoever I'd like to store the section in separate file.
So after dcs instantiation I did:
dcs.SectionInformation.ConfigSource = "DatabaseConnections.config";
on execution of the last line in above I get an exception "Object reference
not set to an instance of an object."
the config file has this file added:
<DatabaseConnections configSource="DatabaseConnections.config" />
But the file itself isn't created and the application can't start on the
next run because of this.
I think, the problem is in the filePath or there is something else I need to
set in SectionInformation, but the docs aren't clear about that

Problem with remote enum in VB.NET
Hi!
My client fetches an object from the remote server. The client clones the
object and proceedes with its client processing.
If I don't clone the object each use of the object results in requests to
the server via the BinaryFormatterSink. Sometimes this produces a
RemoteException.
So, therefore I clone the object in the client. But I still get problem with
an enum member in the object, refering the enum member causes trafic to the
server via the BinaryFormatterSink which results in a RemoteException.
That leeds to the question: how to clone an enum member in a class?
Consider this:

Public State as MyEnum
Public Function Clone() as MyClass

There is a RemoteException thrown from the server when I log the state in
the client:
Debug.WriteLine("Current state = " & myObject.State.ToString())
The state.tostring() causes trafic to the server resulting in a
RemoteException.
If comment the trace line everything works fine!

SOLUTION: OWA for Exchange 5.5 stops working after installing .NET Framework 2.0
I installed .NET Framework 2.0 Runtime on a computer which is also
hosting OWA for Exchange 5.5. After that, OWA stopped working. After
signing on, there was just a tiny messagebox showing up on the client,
saying that the connection can't be established.
First I installed all the latest hotfixes for Exch 5.5 and CDO 1.2.1 -
nothing helped. Then, in a last desperate attempt, I ran FileMon, and
saw that the system was trying to access a folder C:\WebTemp, which
didn't exist. There existed a folder C:\ExchSvr\WebTemp tough. I just
created the folder C:\WebTemp, and everything worked again... I find
this very mysterious, but my users are happy again... perhaps this
might help somebody else.

In trying to make some parts of a NameValueCollection threadsafe, the docs
say use a property called SyncRoot, which is inherited form
NameObjectCollectionBase.
However, there is no such object...

Can't enable tracing via app.config
I've used tracing before, but today I've tried everything and can't get
a simple sample working.
This is my app config (I've also tried specifying a fully qualified type
name for the type attribute of the add element):
