    - combobox inheritance All- I am attempting to create my own custom class which inherits from the ComboBox class. The problem is that I also need to use my own custom object collection for my custom class. I have already done this with a custom ListBox control by overriding the protected method "CreateItemCollection()" and returning a new instance of my custom collection class which inherits from ListBox.ObjectCollection and that works perfectly. I was surprised that no similar method exists for the ComboBox class. Am I overlooking something here? Why would they omit this?     - Cannot get MeasureString to return accurate value for making columns Hi all. I realize this MeasureString topic has been tossed around quite a bit but I can't seem to make it work well despite trying out all the postings. I implemented all I tried in the little function at the end of this posting. I've been trying to create some text separated into columns by spaces. (I can't use tabs to make these spaces between columns because this text ultimately goes on a device that doesn't support tabs.) Basically what i do is 1. get the cells contents and put it into the output text 2. keep adding spaces to the text until it reaches the column size 3. do the same for all the columns in the cells and for each row. Unfortunately even though MeasureString says the distance between the first and second column is nearly the same for all rows, it always looks like this: first_column second_column stuff1 455.445 otherstuff2 593.558 morestuff3 89.88 According to MeasureString the distance between the first and second column are minimal for each row but to the eye its quite large. Can anyone explain this is or point me in the right direction?     - config file with no touch deployment I'm playing with the no touch delpoyment, but I can't seem to load a config file. Is there an easy way to set up a publisher policy file to tell it the path of the config file? Where is the publicher policy deployed in that case? Can the config file be an embedded resource? In that case, has anyone gotten an embedded resource to work with Nant build tool? It seems with an auto deploy situation that you may not even need a config file. In my case it's not all that reasonable to manage a config file for hundreds of users anyway, unless it can be hosted on a shared server. AppSettingsReader should accept a file path.     - Calling a GUI in windows service I am using VS.Net 2002 with windows 2000 advanced server and windows 2000 professional. I have a requirement to use windows service with a GUI. I want to show my own User Interface(Dialog) to get user input, before windows login screen. For that I have created a windows service, in the onstart event of this service, I am calling a vb.net exe, which has windows form. But it throws error bcoz of the form.     - Tool for viewing assembly load exception stack traces I have an assembly that fails to run because of some SecurityException related to my permission settings. I *really* want to figure out why the failure occurs, but when I debug in VS.Net, it happens so early (during loading) that I cannot step into code to look at the stack trace. The only thing I can know is that it's a SecurityException; no watching of the exception object because I never get to my own code. Is there any way to debug this? I can't even get another process to attach a debug session to, so I would even take doing something like java where I go "java myassembly.exe -verbose"...anything with some kind of verbose logging. I get as far as FillFromCommand() in DbDataAdapter, and am then foiled by a Reflector which can't seem to get it right (stack exceptions?).     - Assembly Version Issues Hello All, I am developing a "Business Object" Assembly and "Data Object" Assembly (Remoted) , both of which would be called from .NET and from ASP (using COM layer Interop). I deployed all the assemblies into the GAC and it had a specific version when I deployed it. I developed a service that hosts the Remoting Objects and I deployed the dlls in the GAC and things worked fine. I made a few changes to the COM Interop layer, and when I complied it the versions became different, and even after I manually deploy it to the GAC, the Service does not load the Dll from the GAC, even after restarting the service. It always loads the Dll from its Bin Directory. How can I resolve this issue? How do I make all the projects load the assemblies from the GAC? Is there a way I could force this?     - How to properly deploy shareable assemblies to a server I'm looking for a .NET "best practices" opinion on the following. I have a .NET assembly (call it MyApp.dll) that I want to make generally available to other people in my company. I will periodically be coming out with new minor versions (bug fixes) and major versions (new features) of MyApp.dll. Other people in my company will be using MyApp.dll as a library, in that there are some types in MyApp.dll that they will want to reference from their own assemblies that they are building locally on their machines. So, other developers will be creating assemblies that reference MyApp.dll. Now for the questions: Where should MyApp.dll live? How do I account for multiple versions of MyApp.dll existing side-by-side, ready to be accessed from client assemblies? I would like MyApp.dll to be on a company server. But then what (if any) .NET technologies do I need installed on the server? I could simply set up a Windows directory structure on the server to account for different versions of the assembly, and ask people to point their references at that directory structure, but that seems very clunky.     - Problems when performing operations in ASP.NET Hi, I have been having a problem since friday and could not find out what is going on. I have an app built with ASP.NET (C#), that is used from lots of places inside the company. Lately, out users have been complaining about a problem that, when they click on a image to perform some operations, the browser hangs (white spaces, doesn't repaint). One thing they reported is that they have been having those problems after friday, when the updates for the blaster virus were used. More, they report that some stations still work very fine (those that doesn't have the updates). I'm doing this by using Graphics.getHdc(); This returns what appears to be a valid IntPtr, however when I convert this to a HDC by using either HDC hdc = (HDC) (void*) myIntPtr; or HDC hdc = (HDC) myIntPtr.ToInt32(); I get an undefined value for hdc. I have had this same problem when getting a HWND for the form - the IntPtr appears to be fine, but upon converting it I get undefined values. I'm using .NET 2003 on Windows XP (coding in C++).     - How do I determine if a Char is in some character set? System.Text.Encoding can be used to determine some encoding of a Char if that Char can be encoded in it. But what if the char is not in that character set corresponding to the encoding? For example, U+714A is a Chinese character, but not in Big5 character set.     - COM Interop - HTTP Binary Remoting Hello All, I am in the process of migrating the business layer of a web application into VB.NET and also implementing HTTP Binary Remoting between the Business Object Server and the Web Server (IIS) from where ASP pages call the business objects. I have a very strange problem. The ASP and .NET Business Object layer interact perfectly as expected if the Web Servers (IIS)'s 'Application Protection' - property in the 'Home Directory' tab is set to 'LOW'. If this property is set to 'MEDIUM', I get an error as follows: Error Type: mscorlib (0x80070002) File or assembly name pstkszrq.dll, or one of its dependencies, was not found. /testDotNet.asp, line 18 The Dll name (pstkszrq.dll in here) is different everytime the error pops up...looks like an internal dll that IIS creates. The error occurs when the ASP file tries to create the Object using late binding. I have no idea whats going on in here...no clue whatsoever. If anyone has any clues....it would be of great help.     - ASCII files I'm trying to load ASCII files that contain characters from the French language in a way that is independant of whatever Locale the machine is configured to use. So If I have machine who's default Locale is "en-US" and I open some french text like this: [C# exaple that has the same behaviour in any .net languages] StreamReader sr = new StreamReader("C:\\someFrenchFile.txt"); string strInput = sr.ReadToEnd(); Suppose the file contains this: "Le Québec en été." the characters that I get in strInput are: "Le Qu?bec en ?t?." If I change the default Locale in the Control Panel and use Encoding.Default in the StreamReader's constructor parameters, I get the right characters in strInput: "Le Québec en été." What I'd like to be able to do is load the french string with the right characters regardless of what's the machine's default Locale. Is there any difference in the code of the version
1.1.4322.0 vs 1.1.4322.573 (the one available at MS
Windows Update site)?

All of our server got 1.1.4322.0 but one of them got the
update from the website and has 1.1.4322.537.

Any concern/ideas?
