    - Windows service and http request My windows service downloads a file using an http web request as part of its startup routine. This is fine when the service is started manually, but when the computer boots (the service is set to start automatically), there's some sort of condition that prevents the download. The required principle characteristics are that the elements are unordered and that duplicates are not allowed.     - Run VS assembly using VSA Hi, I would like to compile a dll in Visual Studio and have it run using the VSA runtime wrapper class. I've tried to load an assembly using VSA runtime engine but I get an exception stating that the _Startup class cannot be found. I've examined a working VSA assembly which contains (amongst others) a class called _Startup. Also the project file (.vsaproj) for the assembly isn't a compatible Visual Studio project file.     - Detect encoding of a text file Folks, I have a number of text files in a directory, and I'd like to know what type of encoding they're in. I thought I could just open a StreamReader for each file one at a time, and let .NET determine the encoding (Default, UTF-8, Unicode) - there's a nice constructor for StreamReader which takes a file name, and a boolean "detectEncodingFromByteOrderMarks" which I figured would do exactly what I want - open the file and see if it's a Default (ISO-8859-1), UTF-8 or Unicode (UTF-16) file. Here's my function: public string DetermineFileType(string aFileName) { string sEncoding = string.Empty; StreamReader oSR = new StreamReader(aFileName, true); sEncoding = oSR.CurrentEncoding.EncodingName; return sEncoding; } But that doesn't seem to work - in this case, *all* files are being labelled as "UTF-8", which I *KNOW* is *NOT* true.... Is there any easy way in C# to let it determine the file's encoding reliably? Do I really need to "manually" look at the first three bytes of each file? Any ideas??     - VC and WAB integration. I have one more query but this time it is related with Windows Address Book(WAB). Suppose I open a link to WAB through my application's (developed in VC++) dialog box. Now, if I get the focus back on my dialog box with the WAB still opened(not in focus though), I cannot navigate through the controls in my dialog box through the TAB key. Also, ENTER key does not work. But the dialog box starts responding to the TAB and ENTER keys as soon as WAB is closed. Why is it happening like this. I had downloaded a sample WAB program from www.microsoft.com and this program too had the same problem. I want to know if it is a bug or a normal behavior in VC++ and WAB integration. Is there any workaround to this problem. I had put up this query long back to mssupport@grapecity.com but did not get any response. Hope I wont be disappointed this time. I would like to add a few features but my current computer does not have the Visual studio IDE - just the SDK for simple forms i was able to add the src attrib and get the classes to compile but when I use a class in the same namespace my code behind forms ( a data base class - that connects to the Db and has other Db access util methods) - the on demand compile fails with the msg: Compilation Error Description: An error occurred during the compilation of a resource required to service this request. I'm working on a C# windows service project in witch I'm using MS Excel and MS Outlook automation objects referenced through Microsoft Excel 10.0 Object Library and Microsoft Outlook 10.0 Object Library. On my local computer, calling methods and accessing properties on these automation objects works smoothly. However, when I try running the service, having deployed it on the production server, the execution halts on the first attempt to invoke a method or access a property on one of the automation objects. Strange thing is that no exception is thrown, the service just halts and doesn't seem to get any further in execution. The System.Windows.Forms.Timer fails because of the UI-operations it executes in my program. So the program crashes when it is being closed. The solution was to replace the System.Windows.Forms.Timer with an implementation of SetTimer and KillTimer.     - Need info on how to debug customer systems. My development team develops .NET custom software for resell. If we receive a report of an application in the field that has a bug, we would like to be able to remotely connect to the live system (with proper user authorization) to be able to debug the application remotely (preferably with process attach). Currently the only way we can determine how to do this is to use the remove debug components in VS.NET. Is this the only way to do remote debugging? We are not sure if these components are redistributable.     - Classic asp function Hello all, I am just getting started with .net development and have been playing with various sample apps. I am currently trying to replicate a function that I have used in my classic asp apps that gets a user's ntlogin. I normally store it in include file and then run it before the page loads. Seems simple enough but I can't figure out how to get it to work with asp.net. For instance, where do I store the function & how do I call it? I realize that I will probably get responses sending me to Microsoft's site and believe me I have been there. What would be helpful is if anyone knows of a high-level reference comparing the differences between classic asp and asp.net.     - Help me!! Hi all The Problem which i am facing with CrystalReport 8.0 is, this reports are connected to the server thru ODBC. and whenever if i am changing the ODBC Name and Server name . Next time if i spool the report after changing the ODBC Name crystal report prompting the user to enter the user name and password to connect the server. And the next problem is while spooling the report in crystal report , if the user is terminating the report before completion. next time if the user spool any report the crystal report shows "Page Server Error " I need a solution to avoid the above problem. The crystal report should automatically detect the ODBC and connect to the server. with out prompting. I do not know which group to post it to.     - Event order I'm having a problem with the order in which events are raised.. I have a form that contains a treeview and a textbox. When I click on the treeview control from the textbox, the textbox's Validate event isn't fired until after the treeview's AfterSelect is fired. This seems like a bug to me.     - Object Reference Not Set to An Instance of an Object Since upgrading to .Net 1.1 we've noticed that the error messages that occasionally occur in our ASP.NET application are much less helpful than they were when we were using .NET 1.0. I would say 9 out of 10 errors just say "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" and the other detail given along with that error message is equally unhelpful. This error seems to us to be the new "An Unexpected Error Occured" error message and is really unhelpful when trying to debug the problem with the code. Is there any way of increasing the level of detail that is given when an error message occurs? Is there perhaps some setting in .Net 1.1 that turns on or off error message detail? I have both VS 2002 and the 2003 upgrade. Is there a way to install 2003
without going through the hassle of installing 2002 first?

It's just that installing both seems especially wasteful given that 2003
doesn't really upgrade 2002, it is installed side by side with it.

Sure -- just install VS2003; during the installation it will prompt you to
insert Disk 1 of VS2002 to verify upgrade eligibility.
