    - Problem with transprancy and opacity When I give my form a white background, make the transparency key white, and have the opacity set to 100% (1) everything works fine. However, if I change the opacity to 50% (.5) the rather then have a form that is transparent where the white is I get a foggy white.     - vb.net not responding Thanks in advance for any help. I have a Windows form I have written in vb.net (2003 - Standard Ed.). It reads an xml file, populates a datagrid and updates back to the xml file when changes are mde on the datagrid such as additions or record modifications. I go to build with F5 and the hourglass pops up and doesn't go away even though the Windows Task Manager doesn't show "Not Responding". The build is listed as 1 Successful buildwith no erros. Any ideas on this one?     - What framework is running in this scenario? I have a VB6 application that references a few .Net 1.1 components, and one 2.0 component. Does that mean that all will be running under 2.0? Is there any way to force the 1.1 pieces to run under 1.1, and the 2.0 to run under 2.0?     - ClickOnce Nightmares I'm trying to deploy a clickonce application using the command line (so that I can have it in a batch process). I have the following problems/questions. Please, if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. I've managed to deploy the application using the instructions by microsoft, here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/xc3tc5xx.aspx This is all peachy keen. Works fine except... 1 - There is no "setup.exe" file as occurs when deploying through the IDE. Why is this and can I get one? 2 - It cannot deploy over the network. Only locally (in other words, installing from \\mycomputer\public fails, but c:\public succeeds). 3 - When it is installed it doesn't give me an icon in the "Start\Programs" menu nor is it listed in the "Add/Remove Programs" when installed. I was wondering, somewhat, if it actually installed at all except that on install it runs (as it has been instructed to do) and the exe is installed in my user directory. Please help.     - HttpWebRequest ThreadPool usage - strange behaviour I posted this at dotnet.general a few days ago, but as far as there was no answer, I'll repost it here. I you think that there is even more appropriate group for this, please let me know, and I'll repost. Thanks. <Repost> Hi, I read a lot of articles about deadlocks and ThreadPool overloading when a lot of WebService or WebRequests are made from and ASP.NET applications. In most of these articles and examples there is a statement, that HttpWebRequest.GetResponse() call is always executed asyncronously in v. 1.x of the network. I used Reflector to examine this, and indeed, the code looks like: BeginGetRequest(...); ...... EndGetRequest(); Now, I created a test console application, which invokes a simple web service. This service only invokes Thread.Sleep for the number of seconds passed as parameter. Note - this is for .Net v.1.1 SP1. My test application starts 3 threads (not from the threadpool). The first one prints on console the current ThreadPool free threads. And the other 2 make invocation of the sample web service (not using a proxy, but pure GET request, using HttpWebRequest class), requesting delays of 10 and 20 seconds. Now, the strange thing is, that I do not see any thread of the ThreadPool used while waiting for the HttpResponse, I.e. this behaves very differently from what I read so far about how HttpRequests are made. I tried to invoke HttpWebRequest in 3 different ways (just comment and uncomment the corresponding 2 lines in the Main method): 1. A custom thread just invokes the synchronous GetResponse method - no threadpool usage is visible, even as per the articles I mentioned, it should translate in async invocation internally. 2. A threadpool thread invokes synchronous GetResponse - then obviously a threads from the pool are used, but only the ones, which make the call, but still not visible another threadpool thread which is used by the GetResponse. 3. A custom thread, which invokes async GetResponse (with BeginGetResponse/EndGetResponse), as well as async reading of the response stream. Still I can not see a threadpool thread to be used. Can somebody explain this behaviour? Why this sample works not like it should be? If all these articles are wrong, should I worry if I have a async web service, which internally invokes a 100-200 HttpRequests per invocation. I may have more than 300 invocations of that service in the same time? Actually, what I'm after is a web service, which will be used by more than 300 clients at the same time, which by itself retrieves 100-200 web pages per request. I want to speedup the process, and to use all available resources to fetch as many pages as possible at a time using threads. At the following URL you can find a zip with the source files I used.     - Content-Type of MailMessage Why can't we change the content-type setting of a System.Net.Mail.MailMessage? We can change this value for Attachments, but not for the message itself... It's the only thing that prevents me from creating signed/encrypted messages... I can sign the message, add the smime.p7s but I can't change the message content type to multipart/signed... And adding the header doesn't help, the SmtpClient adding a Content-Type automatically... In fact, if the MailMessage would contain the same header properties (Content-xyz) as the Attachment, it would give a lot of flexibility... As for backward compatibility, not setting them would leave the default on, yes? In the meantime, I'll have to try another workaround: put the encrypted/signed message in an attachment...     - How to get the domain name from a WinForm UserControl hosted in Internet Explorer I have developed a User Control (in .NET 2.0) that runs hosted inside Internet Explorer. like in these articles http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/02/01/UserCtrl/ http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=892466 Is there an easy way to reference the HTML Document "parent" of this control and ask it for the domain? I could not find any way to reference the document that worked (ex Parent or Container property) Is there a way to ask the IEHost.dll that is hosting this control in IE? Is there a way through the security model to ask the Assembly if it has been loaded with restricted permissions and if so why? and somehow get to the domain it was pulled down from.... Any ideas? It appears this happens to users that have been logged in for a long time. It appears our users are in the habit of not logging out for long periods of time. If the user logs out and then back in the error no longer occurs. Does any one have any idea what is happening here? Is the some AD setting that causes tokens to expire after some period of time?     - Strange Performance Counter performance problem in Windows Service application Hello All, I experience a strange problem I do not how to approach. My windows service application uses several performance counter. Before when staring the service deletes category and attempts to recreate it. *If* the category previously existed and has been deleted prior to recreation an attempt to create a counter causes Service Manager timeout after 30 sec. So, category gets deleted, but it can not be recreated. I modified my service so it deletes category upon termination, but then it fails during the restart while checking if the category exists. It is completely weird. Now, the really strange part: the same code executed as a console application with *the same security credentials* executes momentarily. Sample code attached below. The code uses .Net 2.0 methods but the same issue can be seen in .Net 1.1. Did anyone experience a similar issue? Is there any known solution?     - Exception profiling? I need to be able to see what exceptions are being raised by an ASP.NET application. I can see from perfmon that our ASP.NET app is throwing hundreds, if not thousands, of exceptions per second but very little is being logged. So what I'd like to do is run a profiler and see exactly what exceptions are being raised and where they are being raised. I've seen several profilers, but all seem to be just heap and/or memory profilers. I haven't found one that will show me exceptions. Does such a tool exist?     - Performance of Queue(of T).Enqueue(T) When calling Enqueue, the internal array may need to be reallocated. My question is by how much? In the old MFC array classes, you could tell MFC how many additional elements to add to the array when it needed to reallocate, which greatly boosted performance relative to adding 1 element at a time.     - drawbacks of Saving documents to Sql server Hi all, .Net 1.1 Sql server 2000 i am working on a document managment module of my application, all i want to do here is save the documents uplaoded by the user from my winforms over webservices application\ webforms applicatoin to sql server 2000. I have been told saving it on the webserver's file system might be a better way but seems that microsft is gong more towars saving everthing in sql server.     - DataFormats.HTML with foreign character questions Hi, I recently have to process HTML clipboard format (both retrieval and posting) in C# and I have struck some problem when the HTML fragment contains foreign characters like Chinese or real UTF-8 sequence. When I examine the HTML clipboard data from Clipboard.GetData( DataFormats.Html ), the return type is System.String. For most part it is correct except in data between the  and  which should contain UTF-8 sequence. For some reason the return byte sequences are wrong at certain places. I then used the unmanaged code via C++/CLI to retrieve the same data and compared byte-for-byte with that returned from Clipboard.GetData() to see the real difference. They are indeed different. The one that I retrieve using Win32 API GetClipboardData() is the correct one while that from Clipboard.GetData() is corrupted. Does anyone know why Microsoft has chosen to use System.String for this rather than Byte[], which should be more appropriate? In the end, I wrote my own retrieval function in C++/CLI that returns a Byte[] to allow me to use Encoding.UTF8.GetString() to convert the fragment correctly. On posting using Clipboard.SetData(), I have also observed changes in certain byte sequences. So I am writing my own. Is there any logical explanation or has this been dealt with before.     - Why tampered Strong name assembly continue to work? Hi, I am always of the belief that once a strong name assembly is built, you cannot modify it without invoking the verification failure on loading. But the other day, a colleague of mine in the midst of getting something done with the managed Directx library, Microsoft.DirectX.dll version 9.12.589.0, accidentally tripped the time bomb as Microsoft no longer supporting this. He could not stop what he was doing and found with the help of Lutz Reflector the function Microsoft.DirectX.InternalHelper.CheckTimeBomb() and he changed the year using a binary editor from 2006 to 2518. He ran his application and did not receive any TimeBombException and obviously his hacked code works. But it begs the question how a strong name assembly could be hacked in this manner without tripping the verification check? I ran sn -vf on the command line for the Microsoft.DirectX.dll and it failed the verification.     - Component in toolbox, appears and disappears... Hi all, I have a windows forms project, under which i've built several component classes, e.g. extended controls like combobox, textbox and so forth... For me to be able to drag and drop them on a form, i always need to perform the following actions : - On the Toolbox Panel, under Components tab, right click then "Add/Remove items" - Browse to my assembly... "projectname.exe" - Pick up the components listed, added after the browse, from the .Net Framework components tab - Get them added to the toolbox where i'm then able to perform my drag an drop action The problem (if any...) is, sometimes, the components after they get added, remain under the Toolbox panel for weeks and then disappear for unknown reason to me, so i need to perform the same operation described above everytime. So, could anybody explain why this is happening ? Is it because, when the component class gets modified, we must readd it again in the toolbox in order to have the latest version ? Everytime a create a new file, i have to copy all the 'Using' Statement to that new file. In VB.net we do it by going to the Project Properties and the referaces are declared globally.     - application_start called (again) when switching domain in same app I'm using application_start for starting Remoting for the application. In iis there are specified several domains for the site i.e.: http://mydomain.dk - http://www.mydomain.dk When shifting between domains - application_start is called again - and this is a problem because Remoting is called twice in the same application - this will result in an error, because the Remote server think its the same which is started again. When called again application variables is not available in the next call of application_start. In Framework 1.1 this is not an issue. Is this a change in 2.0 or is this an error ??     - Desperately need help on Assembly Load Hi, I have written an application in which the main exe sits in, say <Dir1> This application will load using reflection Assembly.LoadFrom of an assembly, say Asm1 which sits inside another completely different directory <Dir2>. Within Asm1, I will then need to load another assembly Asm2 which also sits in <Dir2> But the problem is, everytime I try to do it within Asm2, by using Assembly.Load(assemblyName), but it always could not find it. A colleague of mine suggested using AppDomain, which I then try to create another separate AppDomain using the following command: AppDomain.CreateDomain("Somename", null, <Dir2>, <Dir2>, false); however it always returns an object of type System.Runtime.Remoting.Proxies.__TransparentProxy which when I used, it will always throw an Exception. Does anyone know how to overcome this problem? or suggest any other way?     - Dotnet under Apple Safari browser Hi All, I am having huge problems with a very simple dotnet framework web page (www.gbab.net/ztest3.aspx) , it does NOT render correctly under Apple's Safari. The DIV's do not align amd float as they should, and do in Dotnet. The page is really, really simple, and it has a CSS and with NO masterpage. I have tried using the following as recommendations made earlier in this Newsgroup:- 1) Adding the following code to the page's Page_PreInit method: if (Request.Browser.Browser.Contains("Safari")){ this.ClientTarget = "uplevel"; } 2) incorporating a Browsercap section in the web.config as per: http://slingfive.com/pages/code/browserCaps/ 3) Ensuring the page is validated as XHTML-compliant standard TML (used http://validator.w3.org/) BUT I STILL GET THE PROBLEM! Safari does not handle CSS and DIV's properly! What bugs me, is that there are some pretty sophisticated Dotnet sites out there that work beautifully under Safari!     - printersettings.installedprinters in asp.net not working for non-domain webserver with network printers on domain Hi, We have a .net web application, and are trying to use PrinterSettings.InstalledPrinters to list the printers installed on the webserver. (Windows 2003 server R2, IIS 6, .net framework 2.0.) The printers installed on the web server under the account used by asp.net for this web application are network printers that are shared by other computers that are on our domain. Permission has been granted for everyone to print to them. The web server running asp.net is not part of the domain, and the account used by asp.net is a non-domain account. (It's the identity of the application pool WEBSERVER\webappaccount). From asp.net we can use PrintDocument.PrinterSettings.PrinterName to set the printer name and then PrintDocument.Print works fine to these network printers, however, when you use PrinterSettings.InstalledPrinters it returns an empty collection, with no exception raised.     - How-To: Custom Desktop A friend of mine has little kid. Big enough to use the computer. He created a kid user with restricted user account for his kid but he would like to remove the confusing start menu, etc.... with a simple, home made, kiosk style, fullscreen GUI interface.     - cannot ftp upload pdb file, used by another process (even after reboot) i am getting an error when i try uploading a pdb file: 500 mywebsite.pdb: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.     - Problem with clipboard I'm using .NET 2.0 with VS 2005 on Windows XP Pro and I'm having problems with the clipboard. I'm trying to copy the contents of a word document. The problem is that sometime it is working, and sometime not, using the same piece of code. I searched through the internet and implemented all recommendation including using API (as seen in this article). But nothing helps. It only works the first time I use the application and then I get null even though there is content in the clipboard.     - Problem with environment variable expansion on command line (possible bug) There appears to be a bug in the way the .NET runtime expands environment variables surrounded by quotes when they are command line arguments used as inputs to an application. For example, create two environment variables... set Arg1=C:\SomePath\ set Arg2=C:\Temp\SomeFile.xml If this is passed to a simple .net application... PrintArgs.exe /a:%Arg1% /b:%Arg2% Note that the enviromment variables have no quotes surrounding them. The application is invoked with two separate arguments... /a:C:\SomePath\ /b:C:\Temp\SomeFile.xml In other words, the function Main(string[] args) gets invoked with args set to two strings. However, when the same application is invoked but the environment variables are surrounded by quotes.... PrintArgs.exe /a:"%Arg1%" /b:"%Arg2%" It receives a single command line argument: /a:C:\SomePath\" /b:C:\Temp\SomeFile.xml It strips the 1st quote mark off the 1st string but leaves the trailing quote mark. Both quote marks are stripped off the 2nd argument. It also gets the number of arguments wrong. Rather then identifying it as two separate arguments it considers both strings to be a single argument. I would consider the correct behavior to be that it should receive the same arguments in both cases. When the same arguments are passed to a batch file... PrintArgs.bat /a:"%Arg1%" /b:"%Arg2%" ...where PrintArgs.bat is a simple batch file that echoes the arguments passed to it. It receives two command line arguments: /a:"C:\SomePath\" /b:"C:\Temp\SomeFile.xml" Note that the quotes are still intact. The environment variables are expanded but the quotes are not removed. I ran all these on a machine using XP - the results may vary on different versions of the OS - using .net 2.0.     - HTTP 403.9 - Access Forbidden: Too many users are connected Hello, I am using IIS 5.1 on XP Pro. I have a page with many links on it (say 'Main Page'). Clicking on any of the links in Main Page, leads to say 'Page1. My Scenario (modified to make it simple): Click on 1st link of 'Main Page', opens page - page1. I press the browsers 'back' button and go back to 'Main Page'. Click on 2nd link of 'Main Page', opens page - page1 again. I press the browsers 'back' button and go back to 'Main Page'. Click on 3nd link of 'Main Page', opens page - page1 again. After doing this for a while, it gives me error : HTTP 403.9 - Access Forbidden: Too many users are connected Internet Information Services All the links has the code: Response.Redirect ("Page1.aspx", False) If I restart IIS, it starts working fine. Also, this happens mostly when I try to access the application from some other computer. Any suggestion, whats going wrong ? Why is the connection not getting closed ? The above code doesn't compile if I insert a variable in lieu of the string literal for the DLL name. Is there a way to do that (perhaps with a different FCL service)? If it can't be done, I suppose the reason would be that the compiler wants to collect in advance some type info from the named native DLL, so that it can construct proper marshalling code.     - Start and impersonate a console app from windows service Hi, I posted a question earlier asking about starting a process as a different user from windows service. I got some replies and read about this a bit more on the web but still couldn't get it working. The application I want to start is a console app and it also opens a win form which contains an axWebBrowser. There is no user interaction with the form. I've tried creating a Process and set the username, password and domain in the Process's StartInfo: Process p = new Process(); p.StartInfo.FileName = "somePathToThe.EXE"; p.StartInfo.Arguments = "some arguments"; p.StartInfo.UserName = "theUser@Domain"; p.StartInfo.Password = passwordInSecureString; p.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = false; p.Start(); I've also tried Pinvoke the CreateProcessWithLogonW Windows API call. I read about having to set the default desktop for console application so I did this: startupInfo.lpDesktop = @"winsta0\default"; These 2 methods both did not work. I got this message as soon as the process starts: The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. If I start this application without the impersonate, it works perfectly. I won't see the console and win form showing up but I see the expected result when the app ends. Only when I add in the impersonate, I get the error message every time when the windows service tries to start my application. Also I have a console app which does the same thing as my win service. If I try the impersonation in the console mode, it works. Only when it runs from win services, it gives the error. Is there other way to do this? Or am I missing something in my code?? Thank you!!     - FileSystemWatcher issue I'm developing a Windows Service which uses the FSW object to monitor some UNC paths, now I know after reading this article http://tinyurl.com/ykw7aq that FSW is quite unreliable when monitoring UNC paths so in my service I've also implemented a Timer that stops and restarts the FSW and checks for files that the FSW missed because it wasn't intercepting events. For testing purposes I've installed the service in my machine to monitor a local path and set the timer to be triggered every 10 minutes. I left the service running over night and this morning I checked the log file for the service and found that every once in a while (at random intervals) the FSW raise an exception: *System.IO.InternalBufferOverflowException* - Too many changes at once in directory:C:\Pippo The weird thing is that the directory hasn't been modified at all during night so why the buffer overflow excepion? The only thing I can think about is the reset of the FSW, maybe I do it wrong. To reset it I set the *EnableRaisingEvents* FSW property to false and then back to true. Is this the correct way? Also, replacing the while block with the following one, if the array of bytes is small, then the ReadByte method returns -1. while (true) { int n = gZipStream.ReadByte(); if (n != -1) stream.WriteByte((byte)n); else break; } Is this happening because the GZipStream class internally uses a 4 KB buffer? Hi all,

I want to send webrequest using webproxy so that i can hide my Pc's ip
address from server.

So i decided to use proxy and set that proxy details to webrquest using
webproxy.

My question is if i am using proxy for sending request what details of
proxy server will get send to webserver?. what if that proxy server's
access is block by webserver. But through my pc webrequest is
accessiable. In that case what should i do?

If i am wrong in concept please correct me.
