    - Implementing .NET Passport - registry setting for XP I need to update the client registry on an XP machine so it can log into the Passport pre-production nexus.     - Are .NET Framework 1.1 apps on Linux possible? I have both a Windows Form application and a ASP.NET web-based application built with .NET Framework 1.1 that a client wants to run on a Linux box. I have searched the net and MSDN but cannot determine if the applications can or will run on a Linux box. Searching for Linux on the Microsoft site only return "comparisons" between developing with .NET vs Java/Linux; not if you can install/run a .NET application on a Linux box as far as I can find. I have found the Mono site and it indicates that it is an open source development platform based on the .NET Framework that allows you to build Linux apps. However, the question is this: If I build the apps in VS.NET, can they be installed on a Linux box and, more importantly, will they run? Would I need to install Mono on the Linux box? If it is necessary to re-compile the apps developed with VS.NET, will Mono require that the source code be all in C# -- the Mono site indicates that Windows Forms and VB.NET functionality are still under heavy development. Does anyone have any experiences (good or bad) related to such an application deployment for either Windows forms apps (is this even possible?) or web apps? Our shop is all Windows (when cut, we bleed little tiny Windows logos) so we have no experience with Linux whatsoever so any advice, suggestions, etc would be greatly appreciated.     - Window not repainting I have a .net/C# com object that creates a thread and a window to output results obtained in the thread (the thread is reading a com port). Everything seems to be working correctly (I don't get any errors), but no results are displayed in the window.     - save the XML string or the XmlDocument object in session? I'm wondering how much more memory an XmlDocument object takes than the corresponding Xml string? I have some user data to store in ASP.NET session and everytime it's used, an XmlDocument object is needed. If there's not too much difference in the memory consumption, then saving the object would make more sense than just saving the string.     - search in a HashTable, DataTable, and XmlDocument, which is faster? I have a name-value pair type of data that I need to search against. It's to determine what menu item to highlight given the asp.net page name. So the list has all my page names (unique) and the corresponding menu IDs. Some pages have the same menu IDs. One every page load, I want to check the name, and get the menu ID so the menu can be displayed with the proper items highlighted. The list various from a couple of dozen entries to a couple of hundreds of entries depending on the number of pages an app has. It's pretty easy to implement with either a HashTable, DataTable, Dictionary, or XmlDocument. Since it's something every page load would hit, every bit of performance counts.     - Setting <customErrors mode="Off"> I get this problem and cant sort it.. i have read a number of threads which all seem to point to the fact that it does work.. However, i am connecting to a remote SQL Server and the webserver is also remote. I cannot debug either. I have read that i might need debugging permissions on the web server? Is this the case? The Server OS is windows 2003 so i presume its running IIS. All of the projects are are divided into two major portions... - the persistance (all related projects in a same solution) - the business (all related projects in a same solution) If a project of persistance requires reference of another project located in persistance tier, I add reference using the PROJECTS tab. Now the problem comes when I have to add a reference of project which is not a part of solution... I have to use the FILE reference. Now big big problems happens... PROJECT_A uses PROJECT_B I add reference of PROJECT_A in PROJECT_C (as a result, it will copy both DLL's into the bin of PROJECT_C). Now I also need to access PROJECT_B in PROJECT_C... I add file reference again... Now problem occurs... for sure, if there is a version difference of PROJECT_B being used by PROJECT_A and PROJECT_C, the compiler gives warning that it cannot copy DLL blah blah... while building PROJECT_C.     - Is this a memory leak? Hi, I've been having problem with a socket listener as a windows service consuming all available memory. The following code reproduces my problem: Dim lSocket As New Socket(AddressFamily.InterNetwork, SocketType.Stream, ProtocolType.IP) lSocket.Bind(New IPEndPoint(IPAddress.Any, 16005)) lSocket.Listen(5) While (True) Dim cSocket As Socket = lSocket.Accept cSocket = lSocket.Accept cSocket.Shutdown(SocketShutdown.Both) cSocket.Close() CType(cSocket, IDisposable).Dispose() cSocket = Nothing End While Running this code from a button on a form and making 100's of sequencial connections to the listen socket causes the process to consume 4-8k of memory about every 6-8 connections. This memory is never freed. Im using .net 1.1 and VB on Windows 2k Pro. Is this a memory leak in .net or a GC problem? Should I be looking at making calls to the GC? Regards, Ben.     - reference question Hi, if i make a DLL with vb/c# dot.net and then reference this DLL from another application, is there some global initialization occured on the DLL from only having the reference or does it use memory and make initialication only when the referencing app making a new class instance and a function call? i ask this question because i am having an asp dot-ent web application with a DLL that have function that i need to call even from cosole apps. so when i reference an asp-dot net created assembly from a console/windows app and i make call to function that will work because it does not do something with the asp framework. but if the DLL needs some kind of initializations that required, lets say, running inside IIS or something like that i might have problems in the future. if you experienced this or familiar with the internals, please advise.     - AARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!! I'm pulling my hair out here. OpenType fonts aren't working! We've added the opentype font 'Myriad' to our windows install. There are several variations. These fonts do not show up in the System.Drawing.FontFamily.Families array. I wrote a quick Visual C++ app to use the EnumFontFamilies() WINAPI to get a list of fonts and they show up. We are expanding our MS .NET distributed application to take advantage of some 3rd party tools on the Unix platform. Everything goes to plan and they each install successfully with the Installutil.exe prog.     - .NET 2003 subtract precision of double & float Hi there I'm using the Visual Studio .NET 2003 -> C#. If i try to subtract 145.05 - 140.0 i will get 5.050000000001. Why isn't the result 5.05? My testcode is: double a = 145.05; double b = 140; double c = 0; c = a - b; this.txtResult.Text = c.ToString(); I thought that could be a failure of the conversion of the ToString method, so i used the debugger to find out where the problem is, but the var "c" is 5.05000000001.     - ThreadExceptionEventHandler firing uneccesarily? Hi I've setup a ThreadExceptionEventHandler for my app which successfully handles my unhandled events. Application.ThreadException += new System.Threading.ThreadExceptionEventHandler( OnGuiUnhandledException ); (this as per Jason Clarks article....MSDN Mag June 04) This works fine! However, I'm invoking an async method (BeginInvoke) which passes in a callback method as part of the call. If the async method throws an exception, my callback catches and reports it. IAsyncResult ar = operation.BeginInvoke( new AsyncCallback( FinishedFunc ), operation ); . . . . private void FinishedFunc( IAsyncResult ar ) { try { OpFunctionDelegate dlgt = (OpFunctionDelegate)ar.AsyncState; applyResult = dlgt.EndInvoke( ar ); } catch( InvalidOperationException e ) { // Handle cleanly...report etc } } The problem is, if I catch and handle the exception in the callback, or even if the callback throws an exception which is safely handled in that method, the ThreadException event is still being thrown for that same exception type and my unhandled exception handler reports the error. Let say I have a customer having an old version of the product and an other having a newer version with some different field, sigh... I would like the communication to kind of try to work anyway. I know I could have implement ISerializable interface on my data object but let's look in an other direction, I would like to have a custom IServerFormatterSinkProvider which return a custom formatter sink. The add-in provides a dialog box activated by a CommandBarButton on Outlook's command bar. At some point in the usage of the dialog, when a specific function is activated (by clicking on a button in the dialog), it adds an attachment to a new email, by calling an instruction of this kind: . . theMail.Attachments.Add(theFilePath, , 1, fileNameToPresent) . . both the "theFilePath" variable and the "fileNameToPresent" are completely valid, and the add-in has functioned correctly for months (I have used it daily). However, suddenly the situation has changed, and an exception is thrown every time this line is executed. The message of the exception is something like the following (as I get the message in Danish, I have tried to translate it to english as properly as I could): --- System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x...): The file <theFilename>.doc cannot be created. Right-click on the folder in which you want to create the file, and then click on Properties in the shortcut menu to control the access rights for the folder. . . --- The strange thing is that I haven't made _any_ changes to the folders - neither access rights changes nor anything else - for a long time.     - Question about SelectedItems in ListViews Hello, I have a listview and have set the MultiSelect property to false. I assumed that if I monitored the OnSelectedIndexChanged event that I could obtain the currently selected item from the SelecteItems collection by referencing the 0 index. When I do this however, I get a runtime exception telling me I have exceded the size of the collection. The debugger shows the collection to be empty. So my question is, "Is the OnSelectedIndexChanged event created before or after the SelectedItems collection is updated?" I have found that if I use the ItemActivate event my code works but I don't really want to use ItemActivate. I have provided a snipet of code below. private void OnSelectedIndexChange_lvSearchResults(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { ListView.SelectedListViewItemCollection items = (ListView.SelectedListViewItemCollection)lv.SelectedItems; ListViewItem selectedItem = (ListViewItem)items[0]; etc. } The exception is thrown on the second line.     - to use or not to use weakreference ? Hi Suppose i keep my data query results in the cache using the cache object that comes with .net. What do you think if i keep them in cache using WeakReference so GC can collect them ? I was doing some testes with it, but the items seem to be too much times garbage collected... and my cache is "expiring" too much.... at the same time, in a load test i've concluded that CPU is much more required when using weakreference... Therefore I create a new AppDomain at runtime. Hello!

We are currently developing some software at my company. At the moment
we are having trouble figuring out why we are getting a "Runtime error
216" in our program.

After searching around the net, I've concluded that this could be
caused by an access violation - at least in the non .NET programs
described. But could this be the cause for me to, that a runtime error
216 is caused by an access violation in .NET? Shouldn't .NET take
care, that I didn't accidentally made such things?

By the way, we are using the Sax.Communications components extensively
- has any of you had any such problems with their components?
