    - Com component in VS.net Hi, I have a question about a com component (.dll) in Visual studio .net. After I reference a com component, VS.net puts a wrapper on it and the new dll is in my bin folder. I notice that the com dll isnâ??t in that same folder. So, my questions are, after the wrapper is on the dll, do I still need the com component to run this app? If so, how can I tell after I reference the dll in my app what version and path the dll is coming from. And when I deploy this app, do I need to add the com component and register them?     - InstallUtil.exe doesn't seem to honor <probing privatepath> settin I'm using Framework 1.1 and I'm having the following problem when trying to install a service. I have my auxilary assemblies in lower directory called Shared. I have specified the following in the app.config file: <runtime> <assemblyBinding xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1"> <probing privatePath="Shared" /> </assemblyBinding> </runtime> This works at runtime but for some reason if I attempt to register the assembly as a service I get the following error: The inner exception System.Reflection.ReflectionTypeLoadException was thrown with the following error message: One or more of the types in the assembly unable to load.. It is as if the assembly's dependencies aren't being probed correctly when using installutil.exe. This doesn't seem to make sense to me since I thought the probing was done in the CLR itself. The documentation states that if the second parameter for the WaitOne method is set to True, the waiting threat should give up the lock of the sync context and reaquire it when signaled.     - Window Service EventLog Hi, I am developing a windows service in c# and in the app I have three class's. The main one called Service1 and then two that I have added to the project. Now in the main one I created an eventlog. My service1 calls another class and I want to be able to write to that same eventlog but I error out when I call this writeentry method of the eventlog.     - Socket Connection Hai...I have a socket program. Let say I have IP from 125 to 129. When this problem happens I get the following situation. But all other IP 125-128 is working.... and when use hyperterminal we can get connected and communicate with the device. But from the system we only see the communication down IP that is 129 as shown on the examples above. What happen to the data for 125 -128. I confirm that these device is running fine and is still connected but we cannot receive anything. Anyone knows why this happen? Is it a cache problem or a memory overflow problem in .Net?     - System.OutOfMemoryException in EnterpriseServices We are experiencing an System.OutOfMemoryException in our application (see exception message below). We have a physical 3-tier environment. Server is Windows 2003 Server, client is Windows 2003 on Citrix, but problem also occcurs on Windows 2000 running both client and server process on teh same computer. Both configurations have sufficent free memory. The error is raised in the .NET Enterprise Services code, and is trapped in the client. The call sequence is as follows: 1-Client.DoSearch() 2-. 3-. 4-Try 5-DatasetObject = Server.Search() 6-Catch 7-ex message 8-Server.Search() 9-. 10-. 11-return DataSetObject Line 5 executes, server routine at line 8 ok, runs until line 11. Line 11 returns, and then client jumps to line 7 with OutOfMemory exception. It fails (mostly) consistently on a dataset object that is approximately 60mb, however I can make it also fail by constantly calling the Server.Search routine with smalling Datasets (i.e. 5mB) until it fails. It seems to me there is a problem in the memory management in the Enterprise Services code. I get the feeling that it is working with an upper limit of allocated memory, that is somewhat less than the memory available on the server. And maybe this has been fragmented. Any help much appreciated.     - Current framework version Hello, Can someone tell me whats the latest version of the .NET Framework 2.0? Is it still Beta 2 or maybe RC1? At PDC, people were given Visual Studio 2005 RC1, so I assume the version of the framework on that DVD is RC1, right? On the MSDN site, you can download only the Beta2 version.     - httpWebRequest Protocol Violation Have a code sample to do a basic httpWebRequest, post some data and get an xml doc response. Works great in 1.1, tried with beta 2 and generates a Protocol violation, tried adding the useunsafeheader.... = true in the config, no help, actually created an assembly in 1.1 and used in 2.0 project and still had a protocol violation. The stacktrace looks like its in the WebResponse.CheckProtocol() I am confused why this works in 1.1 and not 2.0, are their additional configuration options for 2.0. With C++ destructor, everything get destroyed without to worry about them. And because memory is not the only system resources, the concept of destructor fits well into object oriented programming practise.     - Build Problems Hello, I have 4 aspx pages in a solution, 2 of which rely on a particular version of a third party assembly. i.e. they need to utilise properties which are in one assembly version, but not another. I was wondering if I could use a compiler directive around the setting of those properties, so the solution can build irregardless of which assemblies are present, and the system run the version of the aspx based on configuration settings derived elsewhere at run time. My compiler currently returns this error when the incorrect version of the assemblies are used: error BC30456: 'XYZ' is not a member of 'blah.blah.blah'.     - .NET 2.0 Configuration and arbitrary config files. Greetings, I have a requirement in an ASP.NET application to load configuration information from an arbitrary location outside of the web root. Specifically, the customer wants to create multiple virtual directories that all point to the same physical directory containting the ASP.NET application files. Each virtual-directory-instance should load its configuration information from a location outside of the web root, based on the name of the virtual directory it is running from. That way, they can have multiple instances of the application connecting to different databases, without duplicating all of the program files. My question is, in .NET 2.0 does the System.Configuration namespace provide a way to accomplish this? Can I just pass it the path to the config file I want it to load? Perhaps with a custom WebConfigurationFileMap or something? I looked at OpenExeConfiguration, which seems to be the only overload of anything related that accepts a path parameter, but it doesn't work. It returns a default Configuration object instead of one representing the config path I passed in. From what I can tell in the documentation, this method is expecting the path to an EXE, not the path to a config file.     - C# Multi-Threading Lock Issue I have a server application. This application has two pieces of shared data. They are both hashtables. The untroubling hashtable holds the clients data. The hashtable that is giving me grief represents a list of all of the clients connected to the server. Periodically I go through the client list (a.k.a, the irritating hashtable) using an enumeration to make sure they are still active. The code looks like this: IDictionaryEnumerator i = ClientList.GetEnumerator(); while (i.MoveNext()) { ClientKeepAliveHandler handler = null; try { handler = (ClientKeepAliveHandler)((object[])i.Value)[1]; IAsyncResult ar = handler.BeginInvoke(new AsyncCallback(this._asyncCallBack), i.Entry); } catch (System.Exception ex) { _writeError((int)i.Key,ref ex,MethodBase.GetCurrentMethod().Name); } } Now, this iteration continues happliy along and as the asynchronous call comes back the _asyncCallBack function gets called that looks like this: DictionaryEntry clientData = (DictionaryEntry)ar.AsyncState; ClientKeepAliveHandler del = null; try { del = (ClientKeepAliveHandler)((object[])clientData.Value)[1]; del.EndInvoke(ar); } catch (Exception ex) { ClientKeepAlive -= del; Exception e = new Exception("Client to be disconnected (most likely due to inaccessibility).", ex); _writeError((int)clientData.Key, ref e, MethodBase.GetCurrentMethod().Name, "SessionId: " + clientData.Key.ToString() + ", Inner Message: " + e.InnerException.Message); CloseSession((int)(clientData.Key)); } Now, if a client cannot be reached (as in un graceful shutdown) the EndInvoke method raises an exception of "The remote machine doesn't like you" or something like that. If that happens the code jumps to the error handler, removes the delegate from the invokation list of the classes KeepAlive event and sends an email to the developers who may have random bugs in there code. Then the last line of the error handler closes the session and removes the clients data. Keep in mind while this code is executing the original code that started this may still be looping through the hashtable sending off asynchrounous calls (and is whenever I experience the problem I'm about to describe). That being said, when the CloseSession function removes an item from the Hashtable the enumeration bombs with a "oh no the hashtable has changed" error, as it should. Now that I have explained all that the question: How should I implement locking? The behavior I want is the _asyncCallBack functions should all wait until I finish looping before even being able to call EndInvoke. So I tried implementing this in many ways. lock(ClientList), lock(ClientList.SyncRoot), Hashtable SyncedHash = Hashtable.Synchronized(ClientList) with a lock(SyncedHash), Monitor.Enter/Exit, lock(SomeRandomObjectForLocking) all seem to not work. To be clear, I placed the lock statements right before ClientKeepAlive -= del in the _asyncCallBack function and right before IDictionaryEnumerator i = ClientList.GetEnumerator() in the original snipped...help?     - Shared constructor not called before Shared method I have a base class with several derived classes (I'm writing in VB.NET). I want each derived class to have a unique class ID (a String), and I want the derived classes to inherit from the base class *Shared* methods which make use of the class ID. So I gave the base class a classID field, and then I gave the derived classes Shared constructors, which I used to set the classID field to the appropriate values for each derived class. But this doesn't work! In the example below the method DerivedClass.PrintClassID() prints the class ID for the base class, rather than the derived class. So the Shared constructor for the derived class, which is needed to properly initialize the inherited Shared methods of that class, is not getting called. However if I create an instance (xyz in the example) of the derived class the Shared constructor *does* get called, even if I do nothing with the class instance. This just seems wrong. One would expect that the Shared fields of a class should get initialized before any class Shared methods get called, and that this initialization should not depend on the creation of an actual instance of the class. So what is going on? Is this an outstanding bug, or a misfeature that people have resigned themselves to living with, or have I simply misunderstood a feature? And what should I do to get the result I want? I can Shadow the PrintClassID method, and then it works as expected. But I don't want to have to Shadow every method which uses the classID field -- the whole point was that all that functionality was to be handled entirely by the base class, without the derived classes needing to know anything abou it.     - Com object Garbase disposal Hi all, I'm working on a web app that uses a client-designed com dll to access a database, do calculations, etc. When I create a new object from this dll it takes up a lot of memory, so I want to get rid of it asap. My code looks similar to the following" Dim obj as new COMobj .... Do Processing ..... obj = Nothing gc.collect As you can see, I'm setting the object that I create to nothing and calling the garbage collector, which, in my mind, should release the allocated memory. While watching the task manager however, this does not appear to be happening until about 20 minutes afterwards, around the time that the web session would expire. How can I force the memory for this object to be released. Once again, this is not a .NET assembly, this is a COM dll. Any help would be very appreciated.     - Interace questions I'm new to dealing with interfaces. I'm not sure what is wrong with this. I get an System.InvalidCastException when I try to run it.     - NetworkStream.BeginRead() wierdness I have a class that wraps a TcpClient object and manages all the async reading of the socket. It works really nice, and I use it all over the place. But there's this ONE INSTANCE where I create one of these things and it WON'T read data. If I set a breakpoint in my EndRead callback, it never goes off. NOTHING is different from anywhere else I use this class, its just this one place. Now, if I create a second constructor for my class that DOESN'T start off the async reading process (basically, never calls BeginRead()), subsequent Read()s will receive data. Additionally, if I do a loop like this: while(!networkStream.DataAvailable) Sleep(250); networkStream.BeginRead(...) Then the class works like it does everywhere else. Its like, in this one instance (and this instance isn't any different than anywhere else I use this class), I can't just do a BeginRead() and wait for data to come in. After file is changed Changed event raises from FileSystemWatcher. In the handler of this event I try to load file to XmlDocument During this action an exception raises with the message in the subject. I find myself frustrated by knowing the underlying mechanism, but being unable to invoke it. What I want is functionality similar to WM_PARENTNOTIFY. Because of this, the parent needs to be notified whenever the user clicks one of these sub-controls. I have just upgraded my Win 2k3 Server from v1 to v2 of .NET Framework to
facilitate a website I have built using VWD2K5 Express.

The files are there and then I created the website but I noticed it didnt
look for v2 .NET files but the original v1.

So I manually changed the ispai file to the v2 version. So I now dont get
the error of wrong version, but now it says The resource cannot be located
(HTTP 404), but the default.aspx file is definately there.

Anyone know the answer?

You should run aspnet_regiis for the particular web root that you want
running under 2.0:
