    - Large object heap and OutOfMemory Exception hello there, I have developped a windows services in vb.net (framework 1.1 sp1). I read PDF files stored in a database and put them in an arraylist to create a unique document at the end of the loop. Every single document is neary 40kb my arraylist can stored 150 elements maximum. On a windows 2003 server I have problems (OutOfMemory) after few days but this doesn't happen in WinXp. I read nearly 200 post in different forums talking about "large object heap" and the fact it's not compacted. Most people suggest not to use these objects. Other gurus say you should never call GC.Collect. Well, nobody seem to have a real solution to avoid my application blow up. Is this .NET Framework so stupid when dealing with objects in memory?!     - Framework registry access misbehaves under x64 W2003 Wow6432Node We are developing under VS 2005, 32-bit. We are trying to bring up a very large suite of related software on W2003/x64 and found a registry problem. Basically our configuration software attempts to write registry values to HKLM/Software/Our Company/Our System/xxxx But they are instead being written to HKLM/Software/Wow6432Node/Our Company/Our System/xxxx I think I understand the reason for this. But I don't think it is working as advertised. the problem is we find ONE VALUE actually written to HKLM/Software/Our Company/Our System/xxxx and all others written to (along with a duplicate of the above one value) HKLM/Software/Wow6432Node/Our Company/Our System/xxxx WHEN the production software that uses this information goes to read the values, it gets a value for the one value that has been replicated (its the first thing we read), and ALL OTHER values are coming back NULL, so I take it must be trying to read these from non-WOW registry, which is incomplete. I would have expected this x64 registry design change to be transparent to 32-bit applications. All registry reads and writes are done via the framework 2.0 registry routines, and at present, are only being accessed locally. We will eventually need to be accessing these remotely as well.     - Fax problem Hi. I'm trying to write a small faxing module. Below are 2 subs that basically do the same thing. They both work fine on my XP machine.     - Long build times after 2005 conversion Hello, I have a large project exclusively made up of interfaces (several hundred) that define the business objects used in our system. Heavy inheritance and aggregation are used in the project. In Visual Studio 2003 the project takes ~30 seconds to build. In Visual Studio 2005 the project takes ~24 minutes.     - Simple ASP.NET timeout question How do I get the timeout in ASP.NET to work properly? I have timeout="5" in the sessionState element in my root web.config file. In the pages of my application, I call HttpContext.Current.Trace.Write(HttpContext.Current.Session.Timeout.ToString()) and it says that timeout = 5. But then I log into my web application, walk away from the computer for more than five minutes, and when I come back and click on a link (still within the application), it hasn't timed me out.     - Structures vs. Classes At work, our development team has a development standards document that insists Structures should never be used. I'm looking to change this standard but need a suitable argument in order to make the change. I know that Structures are value types, sit on the stack, and are generally more efficient to manipulate than reference types (i.e. Classes). Structures cannot use inheritance, the finalize method or default constructors. Can anyone think of a situation where using Structures is more suitable than using Classes?     - DataGridView and Keyboard Shortcut keys I'm using a DataGridView in a native dialog using CWinFormControl to display a user control that contains only grid. Everything works Ok except when the grid has focus, the keyboard shortcuts defined for other buttons on the same dialog no longer work. They work fine if focus is somewhere else. I tried making a user control containing a button and put that on the dialog. In this case, the shortcut keys worked correctly. Is this a bug with the grid? Is there some grid property that will affect this operation. This is going to create a major problem in using the DataGridView to replace an older native grid. My application has the install section setup as described in many different documents. And it does install sucessfully as "LocalSystem" and "Automatic".     - Key Press Event Hello, I am trying to create an application that captures the KeyPress Events that are happening anywhere on the OS (In any window that has focus). I have a windows form that is maximized and set to transparent. I have written code to allow the mouse to click through the form and also to type through the form. But the form does not capture the keypress events. I am using win32 API to accomplish this so far. Actually I am simply asking where you might suggest I look to find a way to capture every key press event regardless of what window it is taking place in.     - Is this a bug in Exception.Source? I'm running into an issue with throwing exceptions from unmanaged code using v1.1 of the framework. My application uses the Exception EAB, which displays the source as part of the logging. I've been refactoring my code to throw exceptions insted of returning error codes which had an issue with being ignored, and when I have the EAB log an exception, Exception.get_Source is throwing a NullReferenceException. Now at least I think it's because I'm throwing the exception from an unmanaged class I read up, and I think the problem is base1.DeclaringType can return null, but there's no checks to see if that property returned null. from the MSDN: "If the MemberInfo object is a global member, (that is, it was obtained from Module.GetMethods, which returns global methods on a module), then the returned DeclaringType will be a null reference (Nothing in Visual Basic)." I'm planning on converting the class that throws the exception to a managed class to avoid this exception, are there any other suggestions? Maybe before passing the exception into the EAB, I can try to access the Source property, and if it throws an exception, set the source to "Unmanaged Code" or something wierd like that. I can confirm that this bug does indeed exist, and I can also confirm that this bug was NOT fixed in Visual Studio 2005. This is indeed an annoying bug because it changes any "fixed" code back to the "bug" code when you do an "Update Web Reference." For those with the same problems, usually you can do a replace all on System.Data.DataSet with your custom IXmlSerializable object. Just make sure a reference to that object is available in the current project. For Microsoft, for shame! You knew about the bug and you still didn't fix it!     - Structure to byte array and back Is there a relatively painless method for converting the contents of a structure into a byte array and back again? I have been using Marshal to do this, but it is a pain! To get the byte array I have to Marshal.StructureToPtr() and then use Marshal.ReadByte() to extract each of the bytes into an array individually. The reverse is just as painful.     - VS 2003 to VS2005 Crystal Report Export Problem Hi, I've noticed several things. Our crystal report no longer works when trying to export. Existing window applications programs will bring up the viewer and if you click export the program hangs. This happened after installing framework 2.0. I checked one my web applications that explicting exports a crystal report to pdf to display in the web browser. When the new webbrowser comes up that is supose to display the pdf it just shows an empty white screen. Can anyone tell me how to enable again the export feature for windows and web applications on crystals reports creating in VS 2003 that have a application deveoped in 2003. I took the ASP.net application that was done in VS 2003 and converted it to VS 2005 and I noticed that then the crystal report libraries switched over to the newer versions too during the convert process. Thus, I thought maybe converting the project to 2005 would solve the problem, but it doesn't.     - 2.0 exe calling 1.1 DLL Is there a way for me to know which version of CLR was used to load a DLL while in Debug mode? I have a 2.0 exe that calls an 1.1 dll. I have some set of classes, some of them are marked with SerializableAttribute. I use serialization to binary files to persist some object graph between app sessions. I've made an easy change to my code: each class which is marked as Serializable implements ISerializable i-face now, and contains deserialization ctor. The GetObjectData method is implemented very easy: each field that was serialized automatically is added to SerializationInfo now by call to AddValue. Now, what is my problem.     - Connection - MSSQL - HOST_ID Hi Everyone, I wonder if somebody knows what sets the value resulting from the HOST_ID() function in SQL2000. It seems that the OleDb connection sets that property (and pass it to the server when setting up the connection). My problem is that I need to create 2 connections in my application to the same database/server using the same credentials, but I need both connections to return different HOST_ID(). The below allows me to acheive this, however, I want to be able to have the first item be the default item. In a real combobox I would just set the selectedIndex =0. It does not seem to be that easy to do in this case, or intuitive. There is no selectedIndex, selectedItem, text, etc. I even tried to work with the DataGridViewComboBoxCell, but again, not very intuitive. This should not be complicated.     - Label in custom control Hi All, I have a custom control that includes a Label as one of its properties. During design-time I am able to modify the values of various properties of the custom control, including Font, Location, .. of the Label property. This all works very well with VS 2003. Recently I created the same custom control with VS 2005 and built it successfully. However during design-time the Label property appears in the property window but is in grey and I can not modify it or do anything with it. I only have the problem with the Label property and all my other properties are just fine. Is any special treatment needed when working with VS 2005? I searched everywhere for information but found none. Any help or insight is very much appreciated. P.S. My project is for Windows CE, so I work with the .NET Compact Framework.     - GUI's, threading and stopping the user clicking etc. I am would like to start making my programs more responsive by introducing threading. My programs perform reasonable size db queries and builds large treeviews etc. I know how to create thread and set them off etc, which leaves the GUI nice and responsive for the user. However, this also means that they might do something that affects the thread, like clearing the treeview, or trying to start another query while that is running. I would say that to start off I would like to stop the user doing ANYTHING while, say, a db query was running. What is the best way to achieve this? One way would be to have a global variable called boolBUSY, then every time the user tries to do something it first checks this variable before continuing. The only think about this way is that you have to put in in every event handler which seems a bit clunky. Or, similarly, you could check that the cursor is not an hourglass but this gives the same problem. Is there a way to ignore certain user input (keyboard, mouse click etc)? The Eclipse Java IDE brings up a little dialog box that says something along the lines of 'System busy, cannot interupt', which seems reasonable. Any pointers would be greatfully received. I have tested the COLLATION keywork in sql server, and this works fine. However, the .Net stuff does not sort spanish language any differently that english: the 'ch' letter is not alphabetized after the letter 'c'. Any ideas why this might be?     - Missing sqlDataAdapter I'm using Infragistics NetVantage 2005 vol 3, and I'm trying to bind a WebGrid to a sqlDataSource. I can create the datasource, but in the sample, Infragistics says to "drag an oledbDataAdapter from the toolbox onto the form" ... I'm using MSSQL, so I'm looking for the sqlDataAdapter, but it's not in my toolbox. I see a reference to it when I rightclick the toolbox and select "Choose Toolbox Items", but that's is from the System.Data.SQLClient namespace and not a control, which is (I assume) why it's not showing up in the toolbox (I checked it anyway, and it doesn't show up).     - ieexplorer process.start() error status I am using VS2003 and my windows program may try to goto a URL site. I do this by starting a browser process thread p.start(). If the web page cannot be found or a connection to the internet is not present, the browser shows an error message in its display.     - Closing tray applications from .NET I'm trying to make a utility that should assist backup procedure by closing multiple applications sitting in systray. The problem I bumped into is that many of those applications do not close their main window if I try to call Process.CloseMainWindow(). What are the other "polite" methods to close such applications? it to .NET 2.0 run on the same machine. It seem to work well but somtime,
the app is shutdown without any Exception. I look in Event View -->
