 - Custom Class - Different Instances Hello, I have a custom component class that I created that will basically save x amount of "objects." Once x + 1 object pops in, the oldest one falls off. It works great as I have it. In my test web page I create a Static object and use the New to create a new instance of it. If I don't use the Static, nothing is remembered. The only problem is, when I start a second page, I expect it to have a NEW instance of the class but the numbers stored show up the same. How do I get it to always create a New instance. Am I missing the public, private, protected, internal - modifiers in the wrong position? I assumed the New is necessary so it can create a New instance of it. If it take out the Static modifier, nothing works and no random numbers are stored. If I leave it in, it will remember the number (5) I have told it. But so will each new web page I bring up and point to that page.  - COM exception Error after Installing windows 2003 service pack 1 Hi, I developed an ASP.NET Web application and 3rd party COM component is used in this application(Not using COM+, so component is not available in Component Services). This code was working fine before migrating to Windows 2003 SP1. But I am getting the following error after migrating to Windows 2003 SP1 when creating an COM component in ASP.NET (C# Web Services).  - DirectoryInfo.Getfiles does not return all files in folder I've got a little routine that relies on DirectroyInfo.GetFiles to return a list of all the files in a specified folder. The folder happens to contain well over 2800 XML files, yet DirectoryInfo.Getfiles is only returning 305 of them. This has totally stumped me and proving to be a show-stopper!  - Finding out if an exception occurred in a finally block. (.NET 2.0) Hi. Since my situation is a little complex I have simplified it for this post. I start a database transaction. Do some work with it in a try-finally block, and in the finally block I dispose resources. I would like to in my finally block detect if we are leaving because of the code actually just leaving the block (normally or through a return statement) or an exception occurred. If we are leaving normally I want to commit the transaction, and if we are leaving because an exception is thrown, I want to abort the transaction.  - GC problem Hi, I am setting System.Threading.Thread.CurrentPrincipal to a Windows pricipal before I go ahead call methods to process, sometimes cross assembly. The problem I am facing is that intermittently the WindowsPrincipal object within seems to be garbage collected because I get "Handle is invalid" sometimes.I tried setting GC.KeepAlive (System.Threading.Thread.CurrentPrincipal) post setting the value in CurrentPrincipal variable.  - dotnetfx deployment program. Hi, I have an Install project which a service. I am using the setup.exe which checks for the presence of the framework and deploys it if it is missing so the install Project is set to . My install package has been working quite happily for some months on the Development machine. However it has now started giving the error message: 'MyService install Setup has failed. If the problem persists, please contact Product Support.' The msi package is OK because if I execute it directly it performs the installation OK. Looking inside setup.exe and dotnetfx.exe with a text editor shows that the message is present in dotnetfx.exe only. So I ran up another install which installs an application using the same setup.exe and dotnetfx.exe This went OK i.e. The setup stepped through to calling the msi file. So the only difference I can see is that the first project is installing a service while the second is installing an application. I restate that this was all working and has suddenly stopped.  - Port .Net 1.0 application to Windows Server 2003 Hi, We have a complex application (C#, EnterpriseServices (COM+), MSMQ, etc). Application was developed with .Net Framework 1.0 and running on Windows 2000 with SP3. We need to port it to Windows 2003. By default, Windows 2003 has .Net Framework 1.1 installed. Initiall we were planning an application upgrade to 1.1. But later decided to try to install .Net Framework 1.0 on Windows 2003 server and try to port it the way it is now. Is it doable? I don't see why not. I was reading different sources and I didn't find any reasonings why not. Can you let me know, please. Second issue for the same problem: an applicaiton server, that is going to be running a COM+ components is like I said Windows 2003. I installed a component on it, extracted a proxy and installed that proxy to the test machine from which I tried to run a strip-down version of the same application (only test machine issies calls to the database thru COM= component.). I receive the following error message: The activation for CLSID {070CE8EA-70F6-4E7C-8E73-A902507E811F} failed because remote activations for COM+ are disabled. To enable this functionality use the Configure Your Server wizard and select the Web Application Server role. The application is desctop, no web interface. Why does it need to be configured for the Web Application Server role? Is it a Windows 2003 issue? We prepared the server just as we did before with Windows 2000. Any input is welcome.  - DRAWIMAGE() -> TONS OF PAGE FAULTS! Originally, I thought this was due to DoubleBuffer, but ran some further experiments and discovered that page faults occur when calling DrawImage(). For example, create 2 images about 800x800, then call DrawImage to copy from to the other (on say a mouse click). Notice about 600+ page faults occur each time (the larger the area, the greater the number of page faults). I have an application that calls DrawImage() once a second to update the main screen, so after a few days, the page fault count is monsterous. I swear this bogs down my system too.  - How To: Custom Performance Counters with intervals other than 1 second? I want to implement a custom performance counter for monitoring errors in my application. However, the correct rate is not exceptions per second! (If my app is throwing multiple exceptions per second, then the last thing I need to be doing is writing custom performance counters!) I want to implement a counter that has a period of 1 hour. What is the right way (or best way) to do this? I figure out one way, but I had to implement all the code and not use any of the methods in the Diagnostics namespace (other than just setting the raw value of my counter). I don't think that is the right way to do it. Although all the framework code seems to assume periodicity of 1 sec, I have a feeling I should be able to use the framework methods and obtain rates per hour -- I just need some help figuring out the way to go about it.  - HttpWebRequest and Multi Threaded apps Question Hi, Im in the process of writing a program that crawls a website. Im using the HttpWebRequest and HttpWebResponse classed to get content. To make my application more scalable, my application is multithreaded, with each thread making a different request. One problem Ive ran into is that when writing the response stream to the filesystem, from the HttpWebResponse.GetResponseStream() method, if the response is of a sufficient size, it blocks all other other executing threads. If this exceeds the timeout, then all the other threads that are in the process of making a Web Request time out. Ive taken every effort to ensure that my application is not locking, I was wondering if given the scenario that Ive listed, would using Asynchronous Web Requests be more efficient?  - Convert BinaryString into int? Hello, I have some binarystrings in the registry (from an older j++ app) that I need to convert at runtime to ints. What is the best practice for this? In J++ you could just call Integer.ParseInt(val, 2); I've tried Convert.ToUInt32(object, int) but I can't get the compiler to believe that is a valid overload; it keeps complaining that it can't convert an int to an IFormatProvider, which is a different overload.  - Issue with MMC in VS.NET Dear all, I am facing a frustrating problem in trying to make sense of an existing MMC Snapin developed using Visual Studio .NET by You-Know-Who. Well, the project type for the Snapin is a Class Library. Once I build the solution from visual Studio .NET, the solution consisting of the Class Library and the Packager, will churn out a .MSC file.. All this is working fine.. I am supposed to enhance this project and I must add that I have no prior experience in developing or debugging MMC Snapins in .NET. Since I have not developed this project, I have really no clue as to how to go about getting into a debug environment for this project. Can anyone please help?? An attempt to debug would say that the project is of class library type and therefore cannot be debugged directly.... I need to be able to debug to make sense of how this one works...  - Java Null VS .NET Null In Java, creating a class that represents a tuple in a database is relatively simple because if you have a field for, lets say, "Quantity" that is an integer, you can set it to null. Since .NET uses a stack for these Value Types, the integer (Int32) has an initial value of 0 and you can't set it to null. So, what's the best way to approach this without having to jump through a bunch of programmatic hoops? These are a couple of ways I've though of. 1) Create a constant that represents a null Int32, et and use that value (problem: you'd have to constantly check that value if you're doing calculations) 2) Make all of your properties be objects. That way you could set the property to an integer, or a null (or DBNull.Value). (problem: performance hit from boxing and potential errors when doing calculations) 3) Have a property for the field and then have an ancillary property names "FieldXIsNull" (problem: classes get bulky and you end up having to check the IsNull constantly) So, what are the best ways to approach this? Side Note, I'd like to stay away from using datasets because they're big memory hogs. If I can have a class that I can instantiate that keeps track of real values, I'll get better memory usage.  - Port .Net 1.0 application to Windows Server 2003 Hi, We have a complex application (C#, EnterpriseServices (COM+), MSMQ, etc). Application was developed with .Net Framework 1.0 and running on Windows 2000 with SP3. We need to port it to Windows 2003. By default, Windows 2003 has .Net Framework 1.1 installed. Initiall we were planning an application upgrade to 1.1. But later decided to try to install .Net Framework 1.0 on Windows 2003 server and try to port it the way it is now. Is it doable? I don't see why not. I was reading different sources and I didn't find any reasonings why not. Can you let me know, please. Second issue for the same problem: an applicaiton server, that is going to be running a COM+ components is like I said Windows 2003. I installed a component on it, extracted a proxy and installed that proxy to the test machine from which I tried to run a strip-down version of the same application (only test machine issies calls to the database thru COM= component.). I receive the following error message: The activation for CLSID {070CE8EA-70F6-4E7C-8E73-A902507E811F} failed because remote activations for COM+ are disabled. To enable this functionality use the Configure Your Server wizard and select the Web Application Server role. The application is desctop, no web interface. Why does it need to be configured for the Web Application Server role? Is it a Windows 2003 issue? We prepared the server just as we did before with Windows 2000. Any input is welcome.  - Icon problem I'm developping an apps which would manage 2 file type (I could foresee so far). I would like to provide each of them with its icon. Now, in the "Good Old Win32 days" (which I never practice ;-) I could just embed Icon resource in my app, with a negative index, and register with windows shell API my file extension and icon index in my exe file. Now the question is... how could I do that in .NET? It looks like I will have only one icon possible, the app icon :-( -- If you're in a war, instead of throwing a hand grenade at the enemy, throw one of those small pumpkins. When I call the BeginConnect method, if the remote endpoint does not exist, it waits something like 20 seconds before returning an exception.  - Centralizing the Authentication Process Hello Friends, Our department has created a few (6) Web Applications and all these applications share a common piece of code which does the "User Authentication". I would like to isolate the authentication process. I am thinking of having a common/central server which gets all authentication requests and creates a valid session for all users who have successfuly logged in. If an unauthenticated user tires to access these application then he/she should be redirected to the login page on this central server. This will help me reduce the time required for maintenance and deployment. How should i go about achieveing this.  - Accessing Process.ProcessName starts continuous I/O activity I am seeing something unexpected when accessing the Process.ProcessName property. Immediately after accessing it, my process starts continuous I/O activity at a rate of 10 reads/sec and 5 writes/sec. My process is not doing anything else at the time - it is a long running process that sits idle most of the time except for this constant I/O activity. This is happening on WinXP Pro + SP2 and Win2003 + SP1, both running .NET 1.1 + SP1. Any ideas how to quiet things down after accessing the ProcessName? It continues even after the var that uses it goes out of scope.  - A namespace implemented over several different assemblies? Hi all, Can anyone tell me if it is advisable (or even possible) to define a namespace across 2 or more assemblies? For example, consider the namespace SampleApplication.Data.Providers Would it be possible to have assembly A define a class as part of that namespace as well as Assembly B also declaring a class to be within it as well? In particular, I have a number of data providers. It would be useful (I think) to declare them in the same namespace, but for the purposes of a demonstration I'm doing, each provider must exisit in its own seperately deployed assembly. It appears the regular expression engine is grabbing the wrong value. For ease of the post I have simply grabbed the relevant pieces of code without comments.  - DotNET Generated TIF Images Won't Work With FAX Server If I use the System.Drawing Image object to save an image in TIFF format I am unable to use the FAXCOMLib to submit it to a FAX server. When doing a FAXCOMLib.FaxDoc. Send call it throws an exception with "Data is invalid". The TIF files are valid and I can open them with a document viewer. And I can submit TIFs that were generated outside of DotNET. It is only dotNET generated images that fail. Is there something different about how dotNET generates TIF images?  - Delete elements in .NET collections A common issue that I see in the microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.adonet group is that if you want to delete a DataRow from a collection of DataRows (e.g. myTable.Rows), you can't do this using a foreach loop like this: foreach(DataRow row in myTbl.Rows) if(someCondition) row.Delete(); You must instead use a regular for loop and loop from back to front like this: for(int i = myTbl.Rows.Count - 1; i >= 0; i--) if(someCondition) myTbl.Rows[i].Delete(); I understand why you must do this. My question is whether this is a standard situation in .NET collection classes. I have an XML file that I'm processing using the DOM classes (XmlDocument, XmlNode, etc.) and I need to loop through the children of an XmlNode and call a function on each one that may or may not delete that child. Of course, if I use a foreach loop or a for loop that loops from front to back, the loop counter gets messed up when I delete a node. It seems to work when I use the same solution as listed above with the DataRows, but I wanted to confirm that it was a valid solution in this case. I can't find any Microsoft documentation regarding this so I was hoping somebody would be able to point me to some or maybe there would be somebody with some "inside" knowledge about this issue. I've uninstalled Visual Studio .Net 2005 Beta 2 and need to reinstall Visual
Studio .Net 2003 but I get an error that the .Net Framework 1.1 and J#
redistributable packages cannot be installed.

Is there a tool to clean up the mess the Beta leaves behind?

The beta install read mes have the best road map for cleaning up for a new
install of the beta. I would look at that first.

I figured out that the problem is not with the uninstall but with a hotfix
of Windows 2000 that doesn't let me install .NET 1.1. Problem is that the
hotfix is not listed in the Add/Remove Software (maybe it was part of a
bigger hotfix).

Can't find a solution for that though :(
