    - Running DTS Package from VB.Net but need to pass parameters I can execute the DTS Package no problem. The thing I can't get working is that there is a stored procedure within the DTS package that need 2 parameters passed to it. I thought that if I used the code to add a global variables to the DTS package those would be passed to the stored procedure but that did not work (Put this code in *** below).     - Visual Studio 2005 and framework 1.1 All, I've have Visual Studio 2005, but I need to create an exe and some dlls that will work with the 1.1 framework. All my efforts to create an exe and dlls that will work on a machine without the 2.0 framework have failed.     - Patch assembly in GAC Hi, Sorry if I don't post my question in the propper place. If so, please, direct me to the right forum. Thanks :) I have troubles building a patch (a PCP file) that propper update an assembly in GAC. I have setup1 that installs assembly ver 1.0.0.0 in GAC and setup2 that installs the same assembly ver 1.0.1.0 in GAC. When I build a MSP file according to the documentation and apply it, the previous assembly (ver 1.0.0.0) remains in the GAC. The newer one also appears in GAC. Have someone resolved the same problem?     - FileStream exception: unknown error Hi, Whenever a customer of ours runs our software on any of his laptops, we get an IOException with an Unknown Error (-1) message at every call to the System.IO.FileStream constructor. This is really annoying, as none of our other customers have this problem, and we have no information whatsoever about the error. I looked into the SSCLI code and apparently on the CreateFile an INVALID_HANDLE is returned, and a call to GetLastError returns -1. It has nothing to do with permissions of security, I think, since new FileIOPermission(secAccess, new String[] { filePath }, false, false).Demand(); (filestream.cs, line 263) doesn't throw an exception. I can understand nobody can give me a "This is it"-answer, but could someone please tell me how to debug a situation like this? This is driving me insane...     - usercontrol in IE shows warning message. How to avoid? Microsoft .NET security warning Never enter personal information or paswords into a window unless you can verify and thrust the source of the request. mvendertaca@nospam.nospam I've created a usercontrol which is hosted in Internet Explorer. It with some action buttons. I could place all buttons on this usercontrol but I did not. When the user presses one of the buttons i detect some more action needs to be taken and open a dialogbox. using ShowDialog. But IE finds a usercontrol opening a dialogbox dangerous (Although the usercontrol could alsready have done anything because i have elevated its permissions using a strongname and such.) It changes the dialog icon to include a little exclamation mark and shows a balloon tooltip on this new icon stating: 'Never enter personal information or paswords into a window unless you can verify and thrust the source of the request. Souce: localhost' This is anoying, because it keeps on coming everytime the action is taken and the user has no possibility (it seems) to make this balloon not coming again and again.     - very short public key encryption I would like to (if possible) shuffle my licence key data with a public key encryption algorithm. Basically I wonder if it's possible to use buffer of 8 bytes long for my data. I did a quick test with RSA (below) but it (apparently) used 128 bytes long buffer.     - Waht is the fastest/bets? Outlook Object/CDO/Redemption/...? Hi, I'm using a thight integration with Outlook 2003 (with an Exchange server) in my VB.NET (2005) application. Until now I'm using the Outlook Object Model, but it appears to be very slow, and has some problems: - doing a Move changes the ReceivedTime of the MailItem - I can't use RichText in the MailItem.Body (only allows plain text or HTML) - some other stuff like having to use small 'tricks' to show the default signature in an email - ... So I'm looking to other ways to have an interactions with Outlook. What I basicly need to do is: - Move the currently selected mail to a specific folder, and write the data of it to a database (subject, entryid, sender, recipients, attachments, ..) - Create a new mail with a specific text, receiver, subject, attachements, and once it is send move it to a specific folder and write the same data to the database These things actually do work, but especially the first one takes too much time: on some clients more than 10 seconds!! Is their a way to speed things up? using CDO or Redemption or ...? What are the pros and cons of each way? Can they do what I need? Any help our hints would be really aprpeciated! Here is the error message: Executable C':\Program Files\Ticketwizard\MyApp.exe\ had the following unrevoerable error: Couln't find library MSVCR80.dll (required by 'C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_perf.dll) Now, the funny thing is my app doesn't use this library at all.     - COM object with CLSID {...} is either not valid or registered - He Hi Friends I have a VB6 dll for ftp file to a remote server (third-party, free dll). Now I migrate the application to VB.net and so I Add the vb6 dll in Reference -> Switch to COM tab, a corresponding Interop is created. Then I run the application in my machine and it works fine. But when I move to QA environment, the above exception is thrown. I then try to register the interop using regasm in QA machine but the same exception is thrown. Would that mean the QA machine miss any dll that present in my machine, say, some dll required by the third-party dll? Many thanks in advance!!     - Register insertion of USB drives in .NET 1.1 Hi there, I'm trying to write something in VB.NET that registers the insertion of a USB device (specifically a USB flash drive) and acts upon the event. I've done some reading up and it seems that using ManagementEventWatchers is the way to go, yet using the code below in a test project, I find that inserting a USB drive triggers up to about 5 events instead of just the 1 I'm expecting.     - Stop 0x000000E0 param: 0x00000001, 0x80000003, 0x00008080, 0x80e92000 Hello. Ok. I have the job of fixing an ibm thinkpad 600e model 5A0 and have a weird problem. I was running xp quite successfully albeit slowly without any issues until I turned it on and now I am getting a stop error. Stop: 0x000000E0 param: 0x00000001, 0x80000003, 0x00008080, 0x80e92000 I am a bit techy and have the job of fixing it :( I know that the stop error error 0x000000E0 refers to the ACPI bios. However it works in safe mode and other os and indeed xp until recently. The bios version is : INET24WW, 05/24/1999 I know this could be updated but I hate the idea of updating the bios (in case it goes wrong) and it worked before. However, When running a test on the system board using the bios it reports an error: DEV 001 ERR 91 FRU 3610 I am not too sure what these errors refer too but believe it's something to do with the battery. Besides, if there was an hardware error inside the bios wouldn't it also fail in safemode? Another sceptical moment! Of course, I have tried running msconfig and disabling all startup items and have disabled all options in win.ini, boot.ini etc. I have managed to do this from safe mode. I cant run sfc /scannow cos its in safemode or system restore as it generates an error, indeed getting into the event logs results in an error so I have the stop errors to work from. The people who owned this machine also has a lot of documentation on here. There is no built in nic card and I cant install anything else until I sort out the other stuff. The only real option I could do is use a ubuntu live cd and hope I can mount it and copy stuff over!!!!!!     - Making a Winforms app behave like a Console app I am attempting to add a "console mode" to my Winforms app. My intention is that when I start the app with a special switch (for example "myapp.exe /batch") to does not launch a graphical UI but instead just displays console messages. My first guess was to simply change the Main method of the startup class to do something like this... if (batchMode) { Console.WriteLine("Now in batch mode"); ... } else { MainForm.Run(); // Launch graphical user interface } Unfortunately, it looks like my app does not behave like a real console mode app in either case. When I execute the app from the command line, the app returns immediately and text output by Console.Write() does not appear anywhere. Setting the app as a Console mode application does not give me what I want either. With this mode, a big black console output box appears even when in "GUI mode".     - Assembly Security Is it possible to create an assembly (Namespace A) and set it so only certain assembly can load it and invoke methods on it. For example, only Namespace B and Namespace C would be able to invoke Namespace A because of this security setting. I am trying to do this by finding the delegate associated with the event in question, and then by calling GetInvocationList() and invoking each EventHandler in turn. And although I've found some nice links to back-door techniques on how to retrieve a delegate for a given event, those techniques don't seem to work for me. I've figured out an alternative method, but it's not quite working the way I want it to...yet. There is logic that causes the selected value (or selected index) of the drop down to be reset or changed via javascript. In the app's startup form's form_load event I have some code that gets the machine's MAC address which I think is the culprit here. The code runs fine on my dev machine and as far as I know it runs OK on the client machines it gets installed on. I now have a test machine which is a brand new dell with WinXP sp2 and ALL windows updates (including the .net framework 1.1 and all relate SPs and updates, but not .net 2.0). When I try to install Office 2000 premium, it can't find several DLL files and eventually fails to install. When I run windows update, it shows .NET 1.1 and 2 in the available updates. Does this mean that I do not have .NET of any version installed and if so could this keep office 2000 premium from installing? Office 2000 premium was working well before the disk failure.     - problems turning off LoaderLock MDA i've got a test WinForm executable that instantiates a DirectSound object in the Forms constructor, so it gives me the LoaderLock MDA exception. following the instructions here : http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/d21c150d(en-US,VS.80).aspx i've run the registry script to disable all MDAs and also created the AppName.exe.mda.config file with loaderLock enable="false" ... but i'm still getting the MDA warning when in VS 2005 and doing debug-start debugging. the only thing that works for me is if i have run the disable script and turn on the 'enable unmanaged code debugging' checkbox. first question, why do i have to run the registry script and 'enable unmanaged code debugging' to get it to go away. second question, why is the AppName.exe.mda.config not working? i tried doing this logic in another thread that was created in the constructor, but i get the same error. third question, what is the proper way to get around this problem in code, without having to change the environment?     - Problems authenticating server for SSLStream negotiation This is absolutely driving me nuts. Any hints would be GREATLY appreciated. I am trying to negotiate a clear channel socket to SSL. Thing is it works great on two development computers, but falls flat on its face when I go to deploy to a server. I have written both CLIENT and SERVER for FTP. When the client issues the appropriate command I call the SSLStream.AuthenticateAsClient, while at the same time the server is calling SSLStream.AuthenticateAsServer. I have played with using a number of different host names on the client side, to no avail. On the server side I reconstitute the server certificate from the registry, where I have it stored as a binary block of data. A utility loads the PFX file, which includes the private key, then stores that in the registry. Later, when the FTP server starts I load the binary data, and use it to construct the Certificate, which is eventually used to negotiate SSL. The PFX was built at the server by importing our certificate, and then exporting to PFX, supplying the password, choosing to include the private key, and to NOT delete the key after export. On the two development computers that I went through all of these steps on (using the PFX generated at the production server), it all works wonderfully. When I do the same at two different servers, the negotiation fails. SChannel errors are logged in the system event log. Event ID 36870, "A fatal error occurred when attempting to access the SSL server credential private key. The error code returned from the cryptographic module is 0x80090016." When the FTP service starts I pull the certificate from the registry as described above, and verify the chain. All 3 elements on the chain are valid. To work with these wrapped libraries, the application seems to access a specific dll, for instance, let's say the C assembly name is A.dll, it seems to be making attempts at invoking its wrapped version, Awrapped.dll. In the case of my application though, this invocation is producing a DLLNotFound exception. If the installer sets the environment variables, then the application is able to pick up the wrapped dlls. If, however, the path to these wrapped dlls is specified in the application configuration file as <probing privatePath = "..." />, the dlls are not found. I don't have the source code for these dlls. Initially, I had thought that if somehow I could get access to the source code, I would be able to strongly name the dlls and then wrap them. Perhaps that would have allowed me to use assembly binding policies to find the specific dlls. But now I think even that would not have helped. Is there a special method for deploying wrapped dlls?     - Finding and Creating Assemblies?!? fuslogvw I am trying to track down an annoying and deep-seated bug in a custom designer for a custom component. In the course of trying to figure out why certain errors are occuring I ran fuslogvw to see exactly what assemblies are being loaded when my application loads into VS2003. I was astonished to see that an assembly I no longer use/reference in the project gets loaded. I was even more astonished to see that the framework went back and re-created the directory structure of the project which used to create the "old" assembly, and plopped a copy of the old assembly into it. I get the following error in the fusion log. WRN: Comparing the assembly name resulted in the mismatch: PUBLIC KEY TOKEN ERR: Failed to complete setup of assembly (hr = 0x80131040). Probing terminated. Which means that he finds the assembly name, but the public key token doesn't match. So the loading mechnism stops here instead of looking in the other subfolder Lib2 where the matching assembly would be. If I put both assemblies in the GAC I didn't have any problems.     - How do C# delegates in .NET work under the hood? C# Delegates And Events in Depth After a couple of years of programming in .NET I finally took time to investigate in detail how exactly C# delegates and events work under the hood. Topics covered in this article include: Class Delegate. Class MulticastDelegate. Field-like events. Event accessors. Virtual events. Delegate Class Every delegate object in your code is implicitly derived from class Delegate. This class is special in a sense that only system and compilers and create types derived from it. C# and VB.NET programmers cannot derive explicitly from Delegate. I am not sure whether this limitation holds for programs written directly in IL (will verify it some day). Delegate class has two main properties - Target and Method.Target references an object instance, and Method describes a method implemented by that instance. To invoke a delegate means to take Target object and call its method described in Method. For example: delegate void MyDelegate(); class MyClass { public void SomeMethod() {...} } ... MyClass myClass = new MyClass(); MyDelegate d = new MyDelegate( myClass.SomeMethod ); // now d.Target is myClass, and d.Method describes MyClass.SomeMethod Note that Delegate represents a unicast delegate, which referes to a single method. Delegates and Static Methods What is the Target of a delegate which points to a static method? For the outside world, Target property of such a delegate returns null. But this is not the whole story. Internally delegate stores its target in a private field named _target. Normally, public property Target just returns a value of _target. Not so for static delegates. For static delegates, _target contains a reference to the delegate itself. "Get" accessor of Target makes a quick check, and if _target references a delegate, returns null. I am not sure what are the reasons for this balancing act. Equality of Delegates Non-static delegates are equal if their targets are the same (i.e. are ReferebceEqual()), and their Methods point to the same method (i.e. are Equal()). This means that delegates can be considered equal even if they belong to different delegate types. For instance, example below prints "Delegate equality: delegates are equal". public class DelegateEquality { delegate void DelegateTypeA(); delegate void DelegateTypeB(); private void TestMethod() {} public void DoTest() { DelegateTypeA a = new DelegateTypeA(this.TestMethod); DelegateTypeB b = new DelegateTypeB(this.TestMethod); bool areEqual = Object.Equals(a,b); if (areEqual) { Console.WriteLine("Delegate equality: delegates are equal"); } else { Console.WriteLine("Delegate equality: delegates are not equal"); } } } Static delegates are equal if their Methods point to the same method. MulticastDelegate Class Class MulticastDelegate derives from Delegate and represents a delegate that can invoke more than one method at once. All delegates that you create in C# are multicast delegates. Internally, MulticastDelegate is implemented as a linked list of delegates. Delegates are stored in the list in the reversed order of execution. I.e. if we execute the following code: Class1 object1 = new Class1(); Class2 object2 = new Class2(); MyDelegate d = new MyDelegate(object1.Method1); d += new MyDelegate(object2.Method2); delegate d is represented in memory as follows: This representation is convenient, because additions and removals are usually done in the end of the list. Invoking the delegate is implemented via recursion: invokaction code first invokes Previous delegate (which recursively invokes the whone chain), and that calls Target.Method. Note that due to this representation Target and Method properties of a multicast delegate always return Target and Method of the delegate most recently added to the list. Adding and Removing Delegates All delegate types declared in C# have implicit operators += and -=. Adding a delegate to a multicast is straightforward: a+=b appends b to the invocation list of a. Removing delegates is based on equality. a-=b removes last occurence (in execution order) of a delegate equal to b from the invocation list of a. If invocation list of a becomes empty, a becomes null. Removal by equality allows us to get away with code like this: MyDelegate a = null; a += new MyDelegate(object1.Method1); a -= new MyDelegate(object1.Method1); Delegates passed to += and -= are not the same, but they are equal. Since removal is based on logical equality, and not reference equality, it works fine in this case and a becomes null as we expect it to. Null Delegates There is no such thing as delegate without an invocation list. Whenever invocation list becomes empty, delegate becomes null. Calling null delegate is a run-time error. Therefore, whenever someone calls a delegate, he/she must check it for null, or else. MyDelegate a; ... if (a != null) { a( parameters ); } I am not sure why Microsoft decided not to make this check automatic. After all, calling a delegate without the check rarely makes sense. A situation when we can absolutely guarantee that the delegate is not null, and when we do really worry about extra couple of cycles spent on the check, seems to occur pretty rarely. If really necessary, for the situation like this a special way to do "nocheck" calls could be provided, but checked call should be the default. Unfortunately, it isn't. Events When I started programming in C#, it took me certain effort to understand the difference between events and delegates in .NET. C# syntax makes them to look deceptively similar: MyDelegate a; // delegate event MyDelegate b; // event Don't let the syntax fool you. Conceptually, event is a pair of methods: add accessor and remove accessor. Each method takes a single parameter of specific delegate type. Add accessor is invoked via "e+=d" expression, remove accessor is invoked via "e-=d" expression. Event accessors can be explicitly declared as follows: class MyClass { public event MyDelegate GoodNews { add { // add accessor code here } remove { // remove accessor code here } } } After seeing full event declaration syntax, it becomes clear that events are more similar to properties than to delegates. Unlike property, event cannot have just one accessor - it must always have both. Note that event does not provide a "call" or "raise" accessor. This is because entities outside declaring class are not supposed to raise the event. In other words, raising is not part of event's public interface - it is an implementation detail. Using Events Users of event register their delegates using operator += and remove them using operator -=. This is all they can do with the event. Class that implements the event is supposed to invoke registered delegates at specified moments, e.g. when mouse button is down, or when socket data arrives, etc. However, what and when to invoke is entirely up to the author of the class. In particular, there is no guarantee that the class will invoke all the delegates that have been registered. Theoretically, the class can ignore every other delegate, or call only delegates whose target is derived from MarshalByRefObject. Of course, although theoretically possible, in reality such picky classes either don't exist, or are a negligible minority. Implementing Events Most typical implementation of an event would be as follows: class MyClass { public event MyDelegate GoodNews { add { lock(this) { _goodNews += value; } } remove { lock(this) { _goodNews -= value; } } } private void OnGoodNews() { if (_goodNews != null) { _goodNews(); } } private MyDelegate _goodNews; } Figure 1 Here we use private delegate _goodNews to store invocation list for the event. This is not the only possible implementation, however. Let's consider a situation when our class defines lots of events, and typically only a couple of events is actually hooked up for a particular instance of the class. In this case, storing lots of private delegates would be a great waste of space. Each instance of the class would carry all the delegates, and only a few of them would be actually used. The solution is to hold in each instance a container that stores only actually used delegates. This is exactly how event-rich UI classes like Control handle their events. Field-Like Events Implementation of an event outlined in Figure 1 is by far more common than any other. In fact, it is so common that authors of C# language added a special syntactic shortcut for it. If a class declares a non-abstract event without add and remove accessors, compiler automatically generates default accessors similar to those in Figure 1, and adds an anonymous private delegate field that stores invocation list for the event. Such "default" events are called "field-like events". See section 10.7.1 of C# Language Specification. In addition, when name of field-like event is used inside the class it refers not to the event itself, but to the anonymous private delegate created by compiler. class MyClass { public event MyDelegate GoodNews; private void OnGoodNews() { if (GoodNews != null) { GoodNews(); } } } Figure 2 Code in Figure 2 is functionally equivalent to code in Figure 1 . Note, that anonymous delegate is private, and therefore not accessible anywhere, but in the class that declares the event. In particular, the following code does not compile, because derived class does not have access to the anonymous delegate: class MyClass { public event MyDelegate GoodNews; } class Derived : MyClass { private void OnGoodNews() { if (GoodNews != null) // bad! { GoodNews(); // bad! } } } Also, if event is not field like, there is no anonymous delegate that backs it up, and the only things anybody (declaring class included) can do with it are += and -=. For instance, the follownig will not compile: class MyClass { public event MyDelegate GoodNews { add { ... } remove { ... } } private void OnGoodNews() { if (GoodNews != null) // bad! { GoodNews(); // bad! } } } Virtual Events If event is declared with the keyword virtual it makes its acessors virtual. Field-like events can also be virtual. Derived classes can override accessor methods with their own implementation. E.g. class MyClass { public virtual event MyDelegate GoodNews; // field-like private void OnGoodNews() { if (GoodNews != null) { GoodNews(); } } } class Derived : MyClass { public override event MyDelegate GoodNews { add { Console.WriteLine("Adding delegate to GoodNews event"); base.GoodNews += value; } remove { Console.WriteLine("Removing delegate from GoodNews event"); base.GoodNews -= value; } } } Event can also be abstract. It means that add and remove accessors are abstract and derived classes must provide their own implementation. Virtual Events Gotchas If derived class provides its own implementation of add and remove accessors, which puts event invocation list in its own storage, base class has no knowledge of how to invoke the event. Consider the following code: class MyClass { public virtual event MyDelegate GoodNews; // field-like private void OnGoodNews() { if (GoodNews != null) { GoodNews(); } } } class Derived : MyClass { public override event MyDelegate GoodNews { add { lock(this) { _goodNews += value; } } remove { lock(this) { _goodNews -= value; } } } private delegate MyDelegate _goodNews; } Whenever base class invokes the event, it will call only delegates stored in Base.GoodNews. However, GoodNews+=d and GoodNews-=d will oeprate on Derived._goodNews, of which base class has no knowledge. This is resolved by making function OnGoodNews protected and virtual. If derived class overrides event accessors, it must also override the function that invokes the event. Summary All C# delegates implicitly derive from class MulticastDelegate, which is a linked list of target/method pairs. Delegates are compared by logical equality, not by reference equality. Event is nothing more than a pair of methods. As such, it can be made part of an interface, virtual, abstract, et cetera. "Raise" operation is not part of event behavior. Field-like event is a syntactic shortcut that implements event based on a private anonymous delegate. Delegates and events are important mechanisms of C# language. The wording in the message implies that you are installing an "update"
version if SP1 which would require that the original 1.0 exists. Try
downloading the 1.1 version from Microsoft. Following is for the
redistributable...
