    - Framework functions - 'object' typed parameters too weak? Hello all Here's the prototype for a System.Convert method. public static int ToInt32(object value); The documentation states that the parameter 'value' is an Object that implements the IConvertible interface. It adds that an exception InvalidCastException is thrown if 'value' does not implement that interface. Isn't this odd? Why doesn't the function take an IConvertible reference? Wouldn't that strengthen the function's contract as this is what is surely uses and requires?     - .Net Framework 1.1 and Citrix NFuse I have a windows 2000 terminal server with Service Pack 3 and .Net Framework 1.1 installed on it. We are using Citrix NFuse Classic to publish our published applications. Prior to installing the .Net Framework on it, published applications would open up immedieately, say 5 to 10 seconds, but no more then 30 seconds. Since updating the terminal server to service pack 3 and .Net Framework 1.1, opening a published app took more then 10 minutes and sometimes over an hour until it actually opens up. We are using Citrix Metaframe XP Feature Release 2 to manage our publish applications. Does anyone know if that are any adverse affects between .NET Framework and citrix or is there something else that I should look at. Only reason why I am thinking it might be the framework is only because that was the last thing that was installed on the server before it the performance changed. I checked the event viewer on the terminal server and I notice this error: "The timeout waiting for the performance data collection function "TermService" in the "N:\WINNT\system32 \perfts.dll" Library to finish has expired. There may be a problem with this extensible counter or the service it is collecting data from or the system may have been very busy when this call was attempted." Any suggestions would help greatly.     - System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationException I get this error on 1 section of my application. We recently started using SQLState to store our sessions. I've tried the microsoft recommended fix with no success...any suggestions?     - Event not called when run from URL I created a simple Windows Forms app (strongly named) in VB .NET that automates MS Word XP. The app handles the Word.Quit event...however my event handler for this is not being called when my app is launched from a url on a web page (works fine when I run my app stand alone). I have a code group that I created for my app in order to avoid a security exception when creating the new Word.Application (I created a code group with the membership condition tied to the strong name of my app and set the permission set to "FullTrust"). I originally ran into this problem while trying to do this with a UserControl embedded in a web page, but found I could reproduce the behavior with a Windows Forms App launched from a web page. So can anyone tell me why the Quit event won't fire when my app is launched from a url? Here is the code from my Windows Forms app...     - No symbols loaded for the document I set a break point in my project but it is not getting hit. The message I get is following: The break point will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document. I have three projects. My start project call this one that breakpoint is not working. This project (buggy one) calls another in which I set the BP and it stops ok. This is a VB project being referenced by another vb project. This is really bothering me. I do not see why is this so. Active configuration is set to DEBUG. This project is registered in COM +. I assume some of my permissions in dcomcnfg might be wrong but I do not know any more as I checks all I could think of. There was one thing I can not find in dcomcnfg and that is Catalog Class entry. I had this while working with VB6 and NT4. Now it is .net and win2000.     - Trouble extracting and computing data from XML. I have an XML database I load into a typed dataset. I have 2 tables in this dataset. One has Orders, One has customers. I want to do a query or computation that counts orders based on Fields in the Orders and Customers table. In a sql query I would do this: SELECT Count(Orders.recNum) FROM Orders JOIN Customers WHERE Orders.Field1 <> 'x' AND Customers.Type NOT 'Basic' Something like that (I know the Join isn't correct). But I want to do it on the dataset. How could I do that? I already have a Relation between the two tables. (Tho I may not have it set up correctly.) Can somebody help me?     - HTTP POST and GET I have an MFC application trying to connect to my ASP.NET application through MFC classes CrfInternetSession and CHttpFile and functions OpenRequest and EndRequest. I am using HTTP POST and HTTP GET. After I upgraded to .Net framework 1.1, this doesn't work anymore. I have searched for solutions and I have tried to change my machine.config file back to what was allowed for web services in previous version of framework: <add name="HttpPost"/> <add name="HttpGet"/> These lines were commented out in version 1.1, but this didn't help me.     - Imagelist: Icons versus Bitmaps? Does anyone know if there is a reason to prefer bitmaps over icons (or vice-versa) when populating image lists? I've always favored icons because of their built-in transparency (although I've never use the invert "color"). But I've noticed that Microsoft seems to favor bitmaps in many of their sample applications. Is there a reason? For instance, do icons clutter the icon cache or require more system resources whereas bitmaps do not? Just curious, Brad S.     - What's diffrence between Assembly and COM Object. Hi my friends, In dotnet framework, intruduced conception of assembly, which can be shared by other program. Assembly can also exist as DLL file or EXE file. And It can be updated smoothly and avoid version problem. It seems assembly can realize same functions as COM objects. So in the future, do we still use ALT or VB to create and use COM objects ? or we just useassembley ? I ask this question, because I'm learning ATL.     - Still many requests for localized resources after installation of language pack Hello! I've installed the Danish language pack for Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1. Before I installed it, my smart client made many requests for resource files in both ...\da\... and a ...\da-DK\... directories. After installation of the language pack, requests are only made for the resourcefiles in these directories: ...\da-DK\... The ones requested is e.g. /da-DK/System.Windows.Forms.resources and the like. It takes a lot of time with all these requests. I'm a bit surprised that the language pack did not include the da-DK files as well. Do some of you know how to handle this second set of files as well? Hello, I have a handful of legacy Windows Script Components that I would like to integrate with some new .NET (C#) code, hopefully with a minimal amount of modification.     - Using Sockets in .NET framework for providers other than AddressFamily "Internetwork" We have developed a sockets provider for a custom comms card that allows developers to use standard Winsock2 sockets calls to access it and we'd like to offer .NET framework compatibility.     - Browser based client/server chat possible ? I am looking into the possibilities of creating a client / server chat using .NET framework. Creating the backend, would be no problem for me I guess, communicating with the client using plain old sockets. But my problem is, how the client (browser) communication with the server, using sockets ? With my knowledge of today, I would use a java applet to take care of the communication between the .NET server backend and the browser part (HTML and javascript portion).     - How to add localized resouce string manually I have a problem adding localized string. I'm doing multilingual C# application development using VisualStudio.NET. There are many messages which are generated during runing time, e.g.: txtStatusMsg = "Server Error"; I want to make use of resource file to store all such strings for differnet languages, so I edit the resource file and add such strings manually. All documentation states the obvious purpose of the internal keyword on a class, but when referencing an assembly, I fear it means single-file assembly. Hello!

Approx. a year ago we made a Smart Client application. It worked perfectly.
Then some customers have begun to install .NET Framework 1.1 instead of .NET
Framework 1.0 and suddenly the specific exception
System.ExecutionEngineException is thrown quite often. The exception is ONLY
thrown when the program is run as a Smart Client, i.e. by starting it from a
URL pointing to a www server. I think there is an error in the Internet
Explorer IEExec program, the CLR hosting plug-in for Internet Explorer.

Do some of you have some suggestions for how to overcome this problem?
