    - StreamReader.Read blocking? I realise this sounds a bit strange, but it appears that StreamReader.Read is blocking. I have redirected stdin, out and err of a particular process, and I spawn threads that handle the reading of the streams by placing the stream data into a local buffer. The problem I am encountering is trying to stop the threads when I want to dispose of the class instance. The StopStandardOutputThread method locks on the call to standardOutputReader.Join() preventing the class from disposing. About the Read() method, MSDN says: This method returns after either count characters are read, or the end of the file is reached. (It's in the remarks section.) This is where I get shot in the foot. Because the stream is open the entire time, it never reaches EOF, and while there is no data in the stream, it can't read buffer.Length characters from it, so it's sitting there waiting for action. Doesn't this make Read() a blocking method? If so, what's the point of ReadBlock()? About ReadBlock(), MSDN says: The method blocks until either count characters are read, or all characters have been read. Now that I'm re-reading that line, I believe I have answered my own question. I should perhaps use ReadBlock()? I'm reading that line as meaning, if you call ReadBlock() on an empty stream, it will return with no data read. Does this seem logical? I'm going to try it now.     - windows service and the Responding property of a Process I have a simple snippet of code that loops through a process() and writes to the eventlog the contents of the Responding property. I have run this in a console app and it returns False as it should. I have moved this code to a windows service but it will always return true. The code is: Dim proc() As Process = Process.GetProcessesByName(_processToMonitor) Dim p As Process For Each p In proc EventLog.WriteEntry(p.ProcessName & _ " id: " & p.Id & _ " full path: " & p.Modules(0).FileName & _ " responding?:" & p.Responding.ToString) Next I have tried to change the Account used for the service but always get the same results (True). I have moved this code to an .exe but I am curious to why it runs differently in a windows service. Regards, David P.S. If someone wants to test this I have found the easiest why to get an application to a Not Responding status is to open a large file with notepad.     - inheritance, class library, and compile errors Here is the problem. I built LibA and LibB as class library projects in the same solution as my web application HelloWorldWebApp. Wherever necessary I added project references. Everything compiled nicely and ran smoothly. After I finished my development, I wanted to use LibA across multiple projects so I removed LibA from the solution and copied the LibA.dll to a common location and added it to HelloWorldWebApp as a file reference. Now, whenever I compile HelloWorldWebApp I receive the following error. 'Public Property ds() As System.Data.DataSet' is declared in project 'LibA.dll', which is not referenced by project 'HelloWorldWebApp.dll'. Keep in mind that LibB still exists in the solution and now references LibA by file. HelloWorldWebApp references LibB by project and now references LibA by file. If I run the application without debugging the web application works fine. How do I fix the compilation errors? Also, can anyone recommend a great article/walkthrough on building distributable class libraries and properly maintaining and sharing them within SourceSafe?     - NET framework setup failed We are looking for help getting NET Framework to install on our computer. We started by trying to install Quickbooks 2005 which seems to start by installing net framework but it failed to install. So we downloaded it from Microsoft's website. This also failed to install. We are using W2000 and it is fully updated. The installation only just starts before the message "setup failed contact product support" with no error number.     - ResourceManager testbed This is my first experience using the ResourceManager to localize UI elements. I have created a culture neutral .resx, a German (de) .resx, and an English (en) .resx. My goal is to initially test this to make sure that it pulls the correct strings based on the local culture. To do this, I changed my regional options to German, however it still shows the English version when I run. Is this a correct testbed for this, or is there something more/different that needs to be done?     - Executing a process & debugging I've been looking for a way to run an executable from within my C# code which allows any assemblies used by the executable to be attached to the debugger within Visual Studio. Using Process.Start() by itself isn't halting on breakpoints within my code. I know there is a way to do this, because VS behaves this way when launching an external program through the Configuration Settings -> Debugging -> Start Application settings of a project.     - Problem creating PerformanceCounters I am trying to create new performance counters using the .Net framework, and even simple examples fail with exceptions.     - TraceSwitch XML file error I am working through the Windows Applications with C# book by Amit Khalani for the 70-316 exam, I am using VStudio version 7.1.3088. In the chapter on Testing and Debugging there is an example where you are asked to do as follows..... "In Solution Explorer, select View All Files from the toolbar. Navigate to the bin\debug folder. Right-click and Add New Item. Choose to create an XML file and name the file StepByStep12_3.exe.config". You then add some xml code to specify a trace switch. The rest of the project is a basic Form with code that aims to demonstrate various levels of output from the TraceSwitch class by changing the value of the switch that was set in the XML file above. The following variable is declared in the Form... static TraceSwitch traceSwitch = new TraceSwitch("FactorialTrace", "Trace the factorial application"); I managed to do add the xml file to the debug folder after figuring out that you have to choose to select 'Include in the Project' for these normally hidden folders to be available in the IDE. However when I Build the project the new XML file is deleted and therefore the switch value is not picked up. Has anyone come across this behaviour? Maybe there has been a change since the book was written. I have downloaded the errata for the book from the Que website and there is nothing about this chapter being wrong. Here's the problem: Let's imagine a C structure containing a fixed-size array struct XYZ { int V1; int V2; double V3[50]; }; This structure, when allocated, occupies a contiguous block of memory (408 bytes in my compiler). Now I would like to have the same structure in C#, such that it would have THE SAME MEMORY LAYOUT as the C structure. The memory size does not need to be identical as in C, but the structure should occupy a single memory block and all data, including the array, should be placed in this block. There is no possibility in C# to declare a fixed-size array and to 'embed' it completely in a struct. When I make a declaration like this: public struct XYZ { int V1; int V2; double[] V3; } the V3 member is a reference to array object, not the array itself. However, many of my controls will not update after the initial display. I am getting intermittent errors when connecting to the server. One in every five times I try to connect, I see the error: "The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish secure channel for SSL/TLS.)" I tried using a ICertificatePolicy to allow any certificate, but that didn't work. You can easily prove one faster than the other in contrived examples. I'm interested in real-world examples. My experiments have shown that both versions are equivalent. Given: void TestStringOp ( string value1, string value2, string value3 ) { string result = value1 + " " + value2 + " and " + value1 + " " + value3; } void TestStringConcat ( string value1, string value2, string value3 ) { string result = String.Concat(value1, " ", value2, " and ", value1, " ", value3); } Dumping the IL for TestStringOp reveals that this is converted to the equivalent of this: string[] temp = new string[] { value1, " ", value2, " and ", value1, " ", value3 }; string result = String.Concat(temp); Dumping the IL for TestStringConcat reveals that the exact same code is generated. Therefore the performance is identical. The bad thing about this is that internally String.Concat will allocate another string array and copy the strings into it before finally calling the fast string allocator. The only time I think Concat is a better choice is when the # of strings to concat is 4 or less. In this case the optimized version of the concat routine is called. Therefore my running rule is that if concatenating 4 or less strings then use String.Concat otherwise it doesn't matter. Understandably timing this code won't be very revealing since the optimizer will probably get rid of all the code anyway but by comparing the IL I should be able to overlook the optimizations that will be done. This worked fine in the past but now it stopped working, we get a System.NotSupportedException. We use the following syntax: <DirectoryEntry>.Properties[<attribute>][0] = <value>; Further research turned out that this does work using system.directoryservices.dll 1.1.4322.573 but doesn't work using version 1.1.4322.2032. To investigate the difference I used Reflector (c# disassembler). I found the following code (for set_item) in version 1.1.4322.2032: if (this.needNewBehavior && !this.allowMultipleChange) { throw new NotSupportedException(); } base.List[index] = value; Version 1.1.4322.573 doesn't has this "if" criteria, it simply sets the value.     - Regular expression captures Hi, From the following string I would like to capture text. String: This action has been executed via Console First of all I like to know if this is the text I need: it must contain "This action has been executed via". Secondly I would like to know "Console" How can Regular expressions help me in this. I've tried various things with the RegEx class but I'm having troubles retrieving "Console". The match.Captures collection always seems to contain the string searched, not only the captured part. RegEx r = RegEx( "This action has been executed", RegExOptions.IgnoreCase) if (r.Matches( myString).Count > 0) { Here matches are found and r.Matches[0].Captures.Count > 0. I must appologise for that. Each time I tried to submit the question, the
MSDN newsgroup dialog kept telling me there was an error submitting my post.
