    - Need to monitor LastAccess I am using FileSystemWatcher to monitor access to a file. I am setting NotifyFilters to LastAccess. The problem here is that this notification only allows monitoring change in Access Date. The event is not fired if only access time is changed. Any workaround for this?     - Properties Windows in Visual Studio In the "Properties Window" in the Visual Studio Environment. When you click on Categorized View, properties are grouped by property types with an collapsible icon next to the type name. That would be a nice feature for my application.     - HRESULTs Hi, I've been asked to write some code that only logs "serious exceptions" (a client... long story). I'm a somewhat young programmer and started w/ .net so I haven't been exposed to Com and Hresults before. My question is: I know that all .net exceptions have an HRESULT protected property. Is it true that there's a relationship between an error/exceptions "level of severity" and its HResult value? For instance: The HResult for a common error such as System.NullReferenceException is: 0x80004003 (Reflector has the integer value as: 2147467261) The HResult for an exception that signifies serious trouble such as System.ExecutionEngineException is: 0x80131506. Aka 2146233082 Would it be possible for me to define an HRESULT "threshold" and log all exceptions that are above or below such a value? Or is there no relationship between severity and an exception's HRESULT value? I suppose the other alternative is to use multiple exception filters but assuming that my "relationship" assumption is correct the user one if statement would be more simple and scalable. I know the Logging Block in the new Enterprise Library can do this but Iâ??ve been asked to implement a solution in the next couple of days and havenâ??t delved far enough into the Enterprise library to use it in a real project yet.     - How do I launche browser maximized each time? I am running Windows XP, IE 6.0, and VB.NET, all with the latest service packs. Originally, whenever I would press F5 from VB.NET to start my web application, I.E. would launch full screen (which is 1024x768 on my computer). (I think I had the browser screen stretched to 1024x768 rather than using the Maximize button). Then I changed my Windows XP resolution to 640x480 to see how my web application would look. Then I changed my Windows XP resolution back to the original 1024x780. But now, each time I press F5 from within VB.NET web application, it launches IE at a resolution of 640x480. Regardless of whether I stretch the browser window or use its maximize button, the browser will launch at 640x480 (not maximized) the next time I press F5 to launch my VB.NET web application. How can I make IE launch maximized (or with a resolution of 1024x768) each time I press F5 in VB.NET?     - How to use interfaces properly... Ok, I have been testing some things and now I have questions about it. I created a dll assembly that contains just one interface (called ITestInterface), which in turn just has one string property called TestName. I built that project and then closed it. Then, I created a windows forms project and added a reference to that assembly (it's named MyInterfaceTest). Now, before I did anything else, I ran the project and a blank form came up. That was as expected. Then I added the "Implements MyInterfaceTest.ITestInterface" line and it added the property code for me. I built the project again and it ran fine. Then I changed the "Copy Local" property on the reference to "false". I ran the project again and it gave me an error: ----------------------- An unhandled exception of type 'System.IO.FileNotFoundException' occurred in Unknown Module. Additional information: File or assembly name MyInterfaceTest, or one of its dependencies, was not found. ----------------------- Ok, so now I'm kind of confused. Does each application that implements an interface have to have its own copy of the dll that contains the interface? I'm asking this mainly because I'm working on building an app that uses a plugin architecture, and I am having trouble figuring out how to set up references that will work during development, but will also let the plugin developer drop his executable and associated files into the main application's plugins folder without breaking it.     - TlbImp marshals array as single ref When I run TlbImp.exe on my COM dll, the IDL following has an array of longs: [local] HRESULT SomeMethod ([in] short nNumBlocks, [in, size_is(nNumBlocks)] long *alBlocks, [out, retval] long *plRetVal); The output creates this method, with a ref int where the array should be: int SomeMethod (short nNumBlocks, ref int alBlocks); I have also tried using 'long alBlocks[]' instead of the pointer, but that doesn't work either. The [in, size_is(..)] *should* be indicating to TlbImp that it's an array.     - How do I launch a process with parameters I would like to launch a process within .NET (C#) with parameters. I have temporarily gotten around this issue by writing this command to a batch file & launching the batch file without arguments, but would like to launch it directly from .NET. My process looks like something like this: "C:\Program Files\Create File.exe" -c -s 1500 Mb -t 0 "C:\temp folder\File Created.tmp" I got the samples working, such as launching notepad with a file, or launching IE with a URL but the above command did not work.     - Excel in VB.NET form I need to display Excel data in a Windows form, and I also need to be able to update the data in cells, and allow users to enter data. I added a reference to OWC components in my project and I have a form with an AxSpreadsheet control in it. However, AxSpreadsheet is a Web control and I am running into stumbling blocks. Before I buy Alvin Bruney's book on this topic, I would like to know for certain that I can create a user-editable spreadsheet in a Windows form, and save and retrieve the data in xml or xls files.     - Can a service abort system shutdown? Hi, Is it possible for a windows service to abort a system shutdown? By registering for the shutdown event with the SCM (by setting System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase.CanShutdownproperty to true), the service is notified of a system shutdown.     - Debugging Hi, Im running a .net program I have made and all runs fine, but randomly it will reset itself without warning . The program is a touchscreen program and runs full screen forms ( borderless ). My first thought was a memory leak so I have been watching memory usage via the task manager. It seems that everytime I perform an action in the program ( all action use datasets and data fetches or local xml fills ) the memory usage increases by 5mb. As a test I performed about 70 actions with the program and at the end found that the memory usage was up close to 150mb. Knowing that the Garbage Collector should be collecting any memory that is out of scope ( all forms containing the datasets are closed ) I left the program running on the login screen for 15mins. When I came back I was presuming that the disgard memory would have been collected. But It hadnt, strangly enough the only way the mem used would drop was when I minimized the program and a few minutes later maximized it again. What im asking is : 1.) Does it sound like a memory leak ? or am I wasting my time looking for a leak as this is perfectly normal action for a program ? 2.) If its not a memory leak - what could be causing my program to reset itself ? on the initial form I added an onclose check ( yes / no msgbox ) as a test, but when it reset this check doesnt show. 3.) If it is a memory leak how do I begin tracking it ? I have no experience of finding this kind of error, as the usual stop and step into obviously wont work.     - DataGrid: Read-Only Delay Okay, as a good neighbor, after searching through the different newsgroup posts without anyone with a similar issue, here's my problem... I have a little c# application with two little forms. One of them containing a DataGrid widget/component with two buttons. One for quiting and the other one calls the second form, which is used to collect data from the user that's then added to the DataGrid on the first form. It's a pretty simple setup. The idea is to keep the DataGrid with its Read-Only property set to true, and using the second form to collect the information for the first one. BTW, the second form also has two buttons: one to cancel the operation and the other one to complete it. The issue is that I started noticing that with this setup when I went to add entries to the DataGrid (using the second form) there was a delay of about two seconds while completing the first entry to the DataGrid. All other subsequent entries to the DataGrid were rather quick, as expected. It was just the first entry where I encountered the delay. Well, I'm using a datatable and a dataset, but these are already active by the time I input data. Not knowing what to do, I started playing around, and decided to try the exact operation with the DataGrid's Read-Only property set to false. Now, the delay was gone. Yes, it could certainly be something else also, but without changing anything else the delay was gone. Heck, maybe this is a known issue, but I certainly didn't know about it. Regardless of the implementation, which certainly could have a major influence on this, why would this property affect the speed of adding data to the widget? Thanks, Alex Tag: Some Help !!     - .NET 2.0 beta and regex regular expressions Hi, I'm porting an app. from .NET 1.1 to .NET 2.0 and unfortunately the existing regexs don't work. Theres no mention of problems or differences with regex in the current beta release of .NET 2.0, I'm just wondering if my original expression was 'broken'? The regex is: Regex hrefExpression = new Regex("href\\s*=\\s*[\"']?((?:[^>]|[^\\s]|[^\"]|[^'])+)[\"']?"); it's purpose is to extract URLs from HTML links. In .NET 1.1 it will take a string like <a href=blah.html></a> and give me a group with blah.html In .NET2 it seems to match everything after the URL aswell. Any ideas?     - sc.exe returns garbage on windows 2003 server machine Hello, We have a customer's machine where the command sc query <anyservice you want> returns nothing or simply the letter "S". This command should return information about the state of the specified service, whether started or stopped, etc... We are using it in startup scripts of our software components. The services itself can be started within the services applet. This problem occurred after the network was accidently disabled (settings->network connections) and the machine was rebooted. Meanwhile the network is enabled and working fine. The server was rebooted several times without changing the situation. I ran the tests right after rebooting. To run the test, start the program, and press Ctrl-S. The times it did not immediately crash, if I kept bringing up the FolderBrowserDialog, it crashed pretty soon. Has not crashed on Windows XP computer. When it crashes, it's immediately after it displays the FolderBrowserDialog. The dialog appears normal. An error message window appears - 'The instruction at "address" referenced memory at "address". The memory could not be "read". The two addresses are always the same. After closing error message window, a second error message window appears - 'program has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created.' The log file is a huge binary file. No exception gets written to the console. It would surprise me if FolderBrowserDialog crashed Windows 2000, and nobody reported it before. But I have no way of knowing at this point. Maybe there is something flakey with my computer. Sometimes Windows Explorer does crash on the computer, but it's been more than a month.
