    - Slow COM Interop with framework 2.0 Hi, i've got a problem with dotnet framework 2 and the tidestone component f1book. I've got an application built with visual studio 2005 that use the f1book component (so it creates the interop layer dlls do comunicate with the component). On certain computers it becomes incredibly slow to perform the features, i'm almost sure that the problem is in COM interop when i call the component methods, does anyone have any suggestion to tweak it up ? We have an app that's using alternate data streams for storing thumbnails, and we'd like to be able to check in advance for non-NTFS file systems (which don't support ADS).     - Error using TCPClient w/ 3.5 CF and Windows Mobile Hello all. I have a application written in the 3.5 Compact Framework running on Windows Mobile devices. VB.NET VS 2008. The application communicates with our server using the System.Net.Sockets.TcpClient class This code used to communicate works flawlessly in our regular windows application. It also works wonderfully when the device (Treo 700 is my test case) is plugged into a PC with the USB cable.     - Click Once application failing at execution We run a Click Once application that runs on an Intranet at our company and our users run Internet Explorer. The click once application is able to download to the users PC, but right at execution, he encounters a fatal error. The fatal error lists the exe of the click once application. I have many other users that are able to do the same download and execute without a problem. I have checked the usual IE settings that could cause ClickOnce problems. Where should I look on the user's PC for an indication of the real cause of the problem?     - Please explain why the GAC cannot be referenced Ok, Im confused, someone please clear things up for me. I know this may seem like a stupid question. I built a DLL that is to be used by all of our applications to perform routine tasks. When the discussion came up about weather or not to store this DLL in the GAC or in the individual projects, I had suggested the GAC. My thought was that IF an update needs to take place, we wouldnâ??t have to update the bin folder of every application. Instead we would simply uninstall the old assembly from the GAC and install the newer version. Now Im finding out that you cant reference the GAC, that you still would need to have the DLL in a local directory and set the do not copy local option. This would only work assuming that you development server drive letters and paths match the production server This to me defeats the purpose and maybe I donâ??t understand. If I cant reference the GAC then, it means I would need to rebuild the project on the Production server as well as the Development server because (in our case), the driver letters and folder paths donâ??t match. So what may exist in C:\My Assembles on our development box surely wont exist on the production box unless Iâ??m allow to create the path on the production box. Unfortunately our production sites do not go to the C: drive.     - List(Of clsClass1, clsClass2)? Hi, A little bit linked to my other question: I thought it was possible to have generic list which accept multiple types of objects. So a statement as ""Dim MyList as List(Of clsClass1, clsClass2)" would accept instances of both clsClass1 and clsClass2. But, it doesn't work :-) Am I simply wrong, or did I do something wrong? When I instantiate an object of clsClass (MyClass), and I instantiate an object from clsSubclass (MySubClass) I can do an "MyClass = MySubclass". But when I declare two generic list of them ("Dim MyList1 as List(Of clsClass)" and "Dim MyList2 as List(Of clsSubClass)"), I can't do an "MyList1 = MyList2".     - Large App icon? Hi All, Been playing around testing my app on Vista and I cannot seem to get it to display a large icon. On the Vista desktop, if I right click and select View->Large Icons, my app stays at 64x64 with a square around it, while others (like MS Word) ramp right up to 128x128. I've added a 128x128 icon into my application icon, and i've even added a 256x256 icon in as well (read somewhere that Vista ignores the 128px and scales down the 256px icon instead), but it didn't work either way.     - Can't bind to an assembly using relative path Hy there, I have a problem binding to an assemlby. I wan't to use an config file to bind to an assembly that is located 1 directory up, relative to the app path.     - Computer will not boot past the Welcome/log-on screen. I am attempting to boot a computer running Windows XP Pro and it will show the Windows is starting up screen then proceeds to the choose the username screen. When I choose the username, the computer immediately shuts down. I have tried to boot the machine in Safe Mode with Networking and get the same response. This occurred after running the Computer Associates Anti-Virus program and defragmenting the machine. Any suggestions as to resolution of this problem would be greatly appreciated.     - datatable from xml doc and massive time differences on desktop / server Hello All, I have an xml document which can contain massive amounts of data with no fixed child node sequence. We have some 9000 odd fields and any ones can be a part of the xml. The way i build the data table is that i process one record at a time and i keep a list of columns in hash table (with ordinal position) and in a string collection (for retrieval in correct order) and for each field, if the column does not exists, i add the column and for that ordinal position, i set the value in the data table. For xml doc contain 85000 odd records with say 5 child fields, on my desktop i can process the whole thing and display paged in list in 4 mins and 40 secs, however on the server it takes around 12 mins. Same input file, same code, same binaries. The desktop which performs faster is Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz with 2 GB of RAM and running XP The Server runs 4 x 2.6 Dual core Opteron with 16 GB of RAM running Windows 2003 Server Enterprise edition. This problem can be noticed in the msdn sample "Hosting Windows Presentation Foundation Content in a Win32 Window" by navigating using the keyboard to one of the WPF buttons. I know that everything I see on the XAML is vector-based. Since the most significant advantage of vector graphics is that they can be scaled without loss of graphic quality, I'd like to write an application whose entire window can be zoomed in and out as the user wants (I always have been hated applications in small windows...). Just like in the VS.NET designer. In VS.NET designer there is a scaler at the top-left corner, and the entire window can be zoomed in our out very easily. So, if I want to change the zoom level (I don't know this is the correct terminology) of my window at runtime, is there any quick and easy way to do that? I don't mean changing the size of the window and the layouts of the controls accordingly using some kind of layout manager. I mean the complete zoom just like we can do in VS.NET designer. Yes, this looks like an odd way to use a progress bar but I distilled this snippet from a moderately large application that was running out of user handles (10000 max) after some hours of use because of just this problem. Try it. Just make a form with a timer, a button, a label, and a StatusStrip. Push the button and you will see it leak user handles in the task manager. Workaround: Explicitly dispose each toolstrip item before clearing the collection. Set DONT_LEAK = True to do this. Is there a better way to solve the problem? Please tell me. I found a few articles on MSDN about leaks with StatusStrips but none of them appear related to this. In particular I have AllowItemReorder = False, so this is not the problem that was reported to occur when you have that set True.     - Is that possible to call .net 2.0 com component fro .net 1.1 Hi all, We have an application which is created in .net 1.1(Visual studio 2003). Now we need to create maps from this application. The only chioce for us is to use ESRI libraries to generate map images. The issue is, current version of ESRI (ArvGIS 9.2) only support .net 2.0. I wrote a map component with Visual studio 2005, and check the "Register for COM interop" for the project. This creates both dll and tlb assemblies. I was not able to add this com component to my .net 2003 application as reference. When I tried to add the tlb file as the reference, I got the following error message: "A reference to "myMapCom" could not be added. Converting the type library to a .NET assembly failed.     - How to check if a directory is writable (without being virtualized.) Hi, I have an application that lets the user choose the storage directory for the data, and copies any existing data into it. I had assumed that trying to copy into a non-writable directory like Windows, would cause an exception, but it silently copys everything into the virtual store. The program then cannot find the data. (Why does virtualization only happen on writing? Surely if windows is smart enough to map a directory to the virtual store when writing it should also check the store when trying to open the file too!) Anyway, I would have preferred the exception to be raised. But even better would be a function that could tell me if the directory is truely writable (so I could prevent the user from selecting that directory). I looked in Directory and DirectoryInfo classes but didn't find anything. Trying to create a file inside the directory succeeds, but is stored in virtual store.     - Namespace question Here is the deal, there is 1 DLL with a namespace of Billing and in that namespace is a single class called corebillingreports. I added the DLL into my project and trying to setup another class that inherits from Billing.CoreBillingReports class. I try to setup the namespace for this as Billing.CompanyA with a class named ActiveBill. Active Bill inherits from Billing.CoreBillingReports class but it cant get it to work. When i set the namespace Billing.CompanyA I do not see CoreBillingReports class available under the Billing Namespace. My goal is to create a NameSpace where it goes Billing.[CompanyName] and in the company namespace all the different billing report classes.     - Huge problem with References DLL's. Please Help Hello Everyone. I wil ltry to explain my problem as more detailed as possible. Part 1: I created a DLL in vb.net wich works fine when referenced it in any other vb application. (lets call this DLL 'My DLL'). This My DLL it references another DLL that is a COM+ DLL. (lets call it DLL COM). Once again, everything works fine when used in a windows application. Part 2: Now Im trying to use My DLL in a ASP.NET project. So I create a new web project, go to My Project and I add the reference directly to My DLL. But because My DLL also uses the DLL COM, I add a reference to the DLL Com as well to my web project. On the onLoad of my default.aspx page, the only code I have is: Dim objSMS As New SMSsender.SMSsender (wich is a method of My DLL) objSMS.CustomerID = 22 objSMS.sendSMS("35312312313", "Recipients Name", 17, "test 123") This sendSMS method, is where is being used the functions of the COM DLL and I it comes up with this error: "Could not load file or assembly 'Interop.SMS_COMAPILib, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=95a7c9d103faea6b' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference.     - Can I use an IFormatProvider to do this? I have to write to a fixed field file, and I have to format my numbers in a particular way. I have to front pad them with 0's, and I have to write the decimal value 3.14 as "314". So for example, if its a 8 character field I'd have to write: "00000314" I looked at MS' formatting documentation (IFormatProvider, IFormatable) but the docs were complicated and I suspect there's a better explanation for me.
