I am trying to install .Net 3.5 on win XP sp2,32 bit x86 processor.
But the process always fails and the error log says installation of
WCF fails. I already have 2.0 and I have tried uninstalling/
reinstalling all .Net frameworks, IIS etc. I have tried installing WCF
alone and the process fails too. I am getting some
UnauthorizedException.

Do you/did you have beta WCF software installed on the machine? Clean it out
first.
Are you installing as admin?
Check your machine config or any *.config files to see if it is marked as
read-only.
Can you install any other package besides WCF and have it work? Ex. card
space or WF

Re: ServiceModelReg fails in installation of WCF by Marc

Marc
Tue May 06 07:44:01 CDT 2008

Might be unrelated, but we had an issue when installing .NET 3.5 as a
domain admin; we had to make the account a *local* admin (i.e. add the
domain account into the machines Administrators group), otherwise the
install would go ape.

(no - seriously, this was reproducable, and the above fixed it...)

Worth a try.

No, I do not have any beta WCF software installed. I had .Net
framework 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 installed on my system. I cleaned all the
versions of framework using the clean tool from one ms guy (i suppose,
aaron stebner) Then I reinstalled 2.0 and then tried installing 3.0.
It was while installing 3.0 that I got the error related to
ServiceModelReg.exe in WPF.

Yes, the user account I am using is registed under administrators

hmmmm....most of the *.config files on my system are related to .Net
framework or visual studio. and almost none of them was read-only.

Yes, I can install WF without any problem. It is properly installed
but in case of WCF, the installation goes properly till the end like
file copying etc but at last, "writing registry value ..Services

At this step, the system waits for a second or two and after that it
rolls back.
Installation Failed.

=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

I have seen many people coming across this same problem and many got
their problem solved by uninstalling/reinstalling IIS. It did not
solve my problem.
I have installed .Net 2.0 sp1, sp2 also but to no avail.
Cant you find any hint by looking at my log files?????
oh! Is formatting the system the last option? :(

Thanks for your response.
Vivek.

Re: ServiceModelReg fails in installation of WCF by summer_2008

Thanks Marc for the reply but my account is already in administrators
group although under a different domain. I checked by going into User
accounts in control panel and my account was under administrators
group.
Is that sufficient? I could not exactly understand the difference
between the domain admin and local admin.

I tried another account, that is administrator account also under
administrators group under a different domain which is the local
domain of my PC and even in that case the installation failed.
And the problem that I am facing is being faced by many other people
also around me. So, the problem is not an isolated one. But I believe
the problem is only related to some privilege settings. Dont know what
else to do. I tried removing read only from almost all windows folders
that allowed me to do so but nothing worked.

Thanks.

The log files typically send you in a circular direction. 2 things todo. 1.
Do a windiff on the machine.config file on your system with a machine.config
file on a system that was working. There's a system.web protocol that needs
to be in there for everything to run smoothely. If you have that and it
still isn't working, find a machine where you can reproduce the problem and
I'll bring in Microsoft Support to check that machine for you.

Re: ServiceModelReg fails in installation of WCF by summer_2008

Thanks Alvin for your reply.
I took my machine.config files and compared it with machine.config
file from a system on which 3.5 framework, vs2008 etc are running fine
(those people had to format the whole OS and then install this 3.5
framework).
I found that there is no difference in the two files under the
System.Web section group.

So, I do have System.Web protocol in my machine.config file and still
I am getting all the errors I listed in my previous post. Someone
suggested me to check the write access for machine.config and
web.config and both these files have write access.
And as far as reproducing the problem is concerned, then we got this
same problem on almost all the PCs (more than 10 in number) on which
we tried to install 3.5 framework and the only 'solution' (for the
lack of better word) is to format C:\ the good ol' master key to all
windows problems. :)

I can send you machine.config file on my system if it can give you any
hint.
Thanks for your kind help.

PS: Is there any way to install 3.5 framework by simply copying the
folders etc from a machine on which it is already installed.
oh oh.
