    - Tell if an object will be local or remote A question. Before I instantiate a type I need to know whether it will be local or remote. Obviously I know the type by a namespace.type string, as I don't have an instance. Now, I can tell a WebService proxy by using reflection to see if it's derived from System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol, so that's fine. The hard bit comes with MarshalByRef types. I need to distinguish between a MarshalByRef type which is configured for Remoting (eg set up as a well known type) and one which is not. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.     - RichTextBox Question I am using Framework v1.0 (C#). My question about richtextboxes is: I have been choosing a location in the text box string doing the following: ... textbox.SelectionLength = 0; textbox.SelectionStart = myPos; ... After setting the position I have been inserting text by calling: ... textbox.SelectedText = "Testing"; ... I discovered that the new SelectionStart after using SelectedText is: myPos + 7. 7 being the length of the selected text inserted. This has worked well for me but it has been brought to my attention that this might be a bug in the RichTextBox and I shouldn't rely on this and SelectionStart should really be myPos after using SelectedText. Is this true? I find this to be very useful because if I use SelectedText again say: ... textbox.SelectedText = "NewString"; ... The result would be: "TestingNewString " and not "NewStringTesting" It seems very natural to move the SelectionStart after using SelectedText, am I wrong?     - Problem with System.Process and quotes/spaces in arguments I wrote a console application that basically consumes arguments and starts other command line apps via System.Process. Let's call it XCompile for now. I wrote a Visual basic add-in that does pretty much the same thing to XCompile. Let's call it MyAddin. XCompile collects information to send to vbc.exe. When it comes across any arguments that are file paths, it wraps them in quotes. The problem I come across is when I try to use a Process against XCompile in the same fashion. vbvc pretends that all the quotes have disappeared and treats everything with a space in it as a separate argument.     - motivation behind delegates I'm sorry for the newbie question, but I'm a bit confused. I'm reading about Delegats in Jesse Liberty's C# Programming book and, well, I'm confused as to the motivation behind delegates. On the surface, they look exactly like using interfaces in java, so why have another construct to confuse things? I know they work "like function pointers" but the whole reason I went to java was to avoid pointers! And before java, I used VB, so pointers are not something advantageous to me.     - Session String value confuses Response.Redirect Overview: I redirect a user to a page to register, then redirect back to orginating page. The registration page is a two part form. On the second post I send the user back to the page they came from. On Page Load I assign a Form value called ReturnURL to a Session value called the same thing. A sample value of ReturnURL would be: ("/whitePapers/paper.aspx?PID=5655") The code is: Session("ReturnURL") = Request("ReturnURL") The user fills in data and submits the form. If the user passes validation they fill out another form. If the user passes validation they are redirected back to the orginal page. Here is the code: Dim sessionReturnURL As String = CType(Session("ReturnURL"), String) Response.Redirect(sessionReturnURL, True) But instead redirecting back to the correct page, the Redirect command appends the sessionReturnURL value under the current directory: http://www.testdomain.com/userReg//whitePapers/paper.aspx?PID=5655 Instead it should be: http://www.testdomain.com/whitePapers/paper.aspx?PID=5655 If I hardcode the value, such as: Response.Redirect("/whitePapers/paper.aspx?PID=5655", True) It works fine, it redirects the user to: http://www.testdomain.com/whitePapers/paper.aspx?PID=5655 Any thoughts?     - HttpWebRequest.GetResponse() Hi, how does GetResponse() act (request-method is GET!), when the Content-Length of the HTTP-Response is -1, i.e. unlimited? Using a Packet-Sniffer i found out, that it returns after having received the HTTP-header and a few packets from the data-stream.     - Windows Service gives Access Denied error Hi. Iâ??m writing a Windows service in C# that needs to run in the NetworkService account, but when I create an Installer and set ServiceProcessInstaller.Account to NetworkService on an otherwise unaltered new project, I get an â??Error 5: Access Deniedâ?? message when I try to start the service, even when logged in as Administrator.     - Compiling C++ class project to a dll I've been given a C++ class library project which I need to use from my asp.net vb.net project. I have tried building the C++ class library it but it only creates a series of .obj files which I can't reference from the asp.net project. How do I get the C++ class library to compile to a dll (I've played around with the properties of the project but it still doesn't seem to produce a dll), is there any other way to include it in my asp.net project??     - ActiveX, plug-in...whatever The other day I posted a question about using ActiveX in my project..... obviously, that's not the best solution. But I found this great article on what the author calls rich-client which does EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Being able to show a windows form in an IE window! http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/02/06/rich/default.aspx Unfortunately, some of the terminology is over my head and it's in C#...I'm a VB person.     - Persistance medium problem. I save and get the ViewState from persistance medium in my application instead of saving it in the hidden field and my program works without problems except in my login screen. In my login screen I have two dropdownlists. The first contains the name "Administrator" and any branch names that the administrator had previously created. The second dropdownlist contains a list of employees that changes whenever the first list is changed. The second dropdown list is not created if the first list has selected Administrator since the Branch is Administrator and the User is Administrator and it would look funny to display a useless dropdownlist. My problem occurs when the Internet is very slow and someone switched from a non administrator to administrator in the first dropdownlist and then clicks the submit button. Since the first submit has processed the change over to eliminate the second dropdownlist, the second submit enters application and when the ViewState is got it does not contain the second list and .Net puts out a message squaking about the missing list. I wouldn't mind if .Net just threw away the second submit. I put javascript code in the form on submit to disable the submit key, but the dropdownlist submit doesn't call the function. I then put javascript in trap the onclick of the dropdown list to disable the submit button but the on click occurs as soon as you click on the dropdown list long before the real submit was issued to my application. I then tried to create the object but make it invisible but that didn't help either. Does anyone know of anyway to solve the problem short of creating the object and disabling it?     - BinaryFormatter.Deserialize after signing of assembly fails Hello, I have a class which is beeing serialized/deserialized using the BinaryFormatter class. That has been working with no problems until I signed all my assemblies. Now I get a SerializationException when I try to Deserialize the class which has been serialized before the signing. So what is best practice in my situation? Do I have to convert all my saved classes or do I write a SerializationBinder to handle it runtime? If I delete all my data and run fra scratch it works fine until I compile my assembly. Then the assembly gets a new versioand it fails on the version. In the tutorial where you can create a non-rectangular shaped window by using your own window painted with some paint utility, I am having some problems with trying to compare the color of the pixel that I retrieve using Bitmap.GetPixel(...) method. The reason I am trying to get the color of the pixel is because I want to allow a mousemove event only when the user clicks the mouse on the visible region of my form and not on its transparent background. But I still have the problem that when a user clicks on the transparent background of my window the icons (e.g.) that I see on that position are not chosen?     - Plugin Architecture Problem Hi, [ BTW I'm using C# ] I'm trying to implement a Plugin architecture where I have a single UI framework, and then load dll components into that framework. At the moment I'm constructing the Plugin loading mechanism, I've created a plugin interface ( that the plugin clients must implement ) and a pluginhost interface ( thart the ui framework plugin manager must imlpement ). When the UI framework loads the plugin assembly it checks the types in the assembly to ensure it supports the plugin interface, if it does then it constructs an instance of this type and casts it to the plugin interface type. If I create a source file with these interfaces in and link this file ( i.e. share the file )into each project then I get a CastException - in CreatePluginInstance - when I cast to the plugin interface type. If I implement this interface in a separate dll and then reference this in the framework and the pluginclient, then the cast succeeds. I suppose this works, but I would rather keep the number of dlls to a minimum, and hoped to be able to get away with just sharing the interface source file. Is this possible ??, or do I need to implement it this way ?? regards Rich.     - Sorted array component Does .net have a sorted collection component similar to the C++ std::set ? I am not interested in a dictionary object, just a sorted collection where I can pass in a delegate to do the sort. I am also not interested in calling ArrayList's Sort() as I want the collection to automatically maintain its sort order when objects are inserted into it.     - .Net 1.1 sp1 troubles I have heard so many issues with failed sp1 installations and problems with applications after installing the service pack that it makes me nervous. We are moving our development to .Net and yet have been unable to install this service pack on 3 of our machines.     - Timing Hi everyone, I'm neck deep in ASP.NET and sinking fast ;) Any help much appreciated. I have two user controls on a page that I want to communicate with each other. One control is called RoleList and allows the user to select the type of view they wish to see on the page. The other control(s) - sometimes there may be several - then change the stored proc, query etc they use to extract info from sql. Therefore, I have set up the RoleList to generate an event and coded the other control(s) to listen and recieve it. The problem is timing.     - Error upon sending request to a web service on Windows 2003 I am facing the following problem I have a windows serivce client sending records frequently to a web service installed on a Windows 2000 Server machine. The connection line between the two machines is 512kbps however only quarter of it is used for these transactions and the average of the records sent is 400K. Recently the machine was upgraded to Windows 2003 Server and i started receiving the following errors: 1. Server was unable to read request. --> There is an error in XML document (1, 1665). --> An unexpected end of file parsing TAG has occurred. Line 609, position 57. 2. The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive. 3. The operation has timed-out. Please keep in mind the following: - This error never appeared on the previous 2000 server. - This error doesnt always occur (not for all records), when it does and the client tries to resend the failed records they are sent successfully - I tried to increase the connection timeout value for the web sites enter in IIS and the responseDeadLockInterval in the machine.config file and the masRequestLength in the web.config file however it didnt help - This error also appears when the newly upgraded machine tries to send to other sites Any Solutions?     - Mobile verses normal aspx? I put a small amount of code to support limited capabilities in my application to support mobile devices. I've used normal aspx (not mobile) and it appears to work very well. I checked it out with the OpenWare 7, Microsoft Mobile Explorer 3.0, and Pocket PC 2002 emulators and everything works very well. I save and get the ViewState from Persistenance media and each of the two pages that I'm producing only transmits about 500 bytes of data so I think the performance is OK.     - Regular expression problems Hello al I am not sure where to post this, so I hope this is correct. We have written a Visual Studio AddIn that relies heavily on regular expressions, which are often executed thousands of times. When running, it works successfully for a while, but the Windows Page File Usage gradually increases, and eventually the application freezes. We have traced the problem to the regular expressions, but the problem does not apply equally to all expressions. For example, the expression "^([\s]*)('|REM( |\t|\v))([\s\S]*)$" does not cause any problems, whereas the expression "^((("(("")|[^"])*")|([\s\S]*?))*)(('([\s\S]*))|$)$" causes a severe memory leak. After this it again returns quickly. In production code I'm calling PerformanceCounter.NextValue from a separate thread, but it still seems to "freeze" ALL currently running threads of my app - nice 20 second delay :-) It only seems to happen at the 2 minute boundary, after that it doesn't (seem to) happen again.     - strange memory managment Hi All, This might be something really straight fowward, but I have been debugging my application. I noticed some really unusual memory behaviour, after putting it through a profile, I narrow it down to the property AllowDrop = true. I created some sample code, which simply adds a panel to a tab control 10 times, then removes the control 10 times. If I have AllowDrop=true set the panel is never destoryed in memory. I am just interested in knowing why AllowDrop=true would stop the panel from being destroyed ?     - .NET and C++ template I have created a C++ MFC dialog based appliction with .NET 2003. I am trying to use a functioning MFC extension dll. There is a header file for this dll that defines a template class. .NET errors when trying to compile this file. This dll and it's associated headers compile and function just fine under VC++ 6.     - Shell_NotifyIcon from a service? Service handles the EventWritten event on an event log. Service is set to run as LocalSystem and interact with desktop. In the event handler, I create a form (but don't show it), and then call the native Shell_NotifyIcon using the form's handle and icon to display a balloon tip. The form will handle the UserClicked message and display itself if the user clicks the balloon tip. However, I have not yet successfully gotten the balloon tip to appear (on Win 2K SP4).     - Large file upload to server (webdav/http file post/other?) Ok, I am asking a question on a matter of theory... I've got a linux server that runs mono+xsp/mod_mono. I would like to create an application to upload large files and be able to update progress during the upload. I've toyed with the idea of dav, but it seemed to be a pain to get going. Plus I didnt really know how I'd upload a file (seemed to be pretty undocumented area) I thought about httpfile post, but it seems like even with proper precautions in place (a large file upload module), it was a best effort type setup where hopefully it'd work.     - Crystal keycodev2.dll Frustrations!!!! I've been in the IT industry for over a decade now and I have worked with Crystal Reports on many occasions. Creating reports is simple. Creating reporting applications has ALWAYS been a frustrating pain in the behind. Crystal is supposed to be the premiere reporting application -- I am losing confidence in this fact and will soon be recommending alternate solutions to my clients. I am trying to get a Windows Forms app to run on a server in a background capacity. The application works fine on my developer's machine, but I continue to get the following very bothersome error on the server: "Cannot find KeycodeV2.dll, or invalid keycode." I have researched this error in the Crystal Knowledge Base and followed its recommendations without avail. Futhermore, I have searched the Google news groups and found that many others are frustrated by the same thing. They have referred to the KB and followed its instructions and still the same damn error! The KB results is a false hope. You think you're onto something, but in the end you find your efforts are in vain. I have registered the license no. in VS.NET. I have registered the keycodev2.dll. I have verified that all the necessary assemblies are registered in the GAC or local folder. I have searched the net for hours, going on days. This is sickening and disgusting. AND... this is not the first time this has happened to me. I have run into Crystal troubles in the past and have had to spend too many hours working out the issues. Crystal keeps on enhancing the reporting features, but they do very little by way of enhancing the ease with which developers can create custom Crystal apps. I for one am getting FED UP with Crystal. If they're going to support a KB, then I expect it to be USEFUL. Run a Google search and you'll see how many others have been frustrated by this same issue. DID ANYONE EVER SOLVE IT? Mario T.
