    - My manifest loading a reference twice im getting the ol' Could not load file or assembly 'ComponentArt.Charting.WebChart, Version=2007.1.1052.2, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=9bc9f846553156bb' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. as you can see the .net framework wants to use version 2007.1.1052.2 of my 3rd party dll. I recently upgraded the 3rd party dll and expect .net to try and use 2007.1.1126.2 I have tried everything, removing / readding the reference, checking the gacutil (which does not list this assembly) even unloading iis and anything that is running the project before removing/readding this reference. Upon viewing my manifest for the project i see that this reference is being loaded twice .assembly extern ComponentArt.Charting.WebChart { .publickeytoken = (9B C9 F8 46 55 31 56 BB ) // ...FU1V. .ver 2007:1:1126:2 } this looks good, i see the version i want in the manifest, scroll a bit further and i find this .assembly extern ComponentArt.Charting.WebChart as ComponentArt.Charting.WebChart_19 { .publickeytoken = (9B C9 F8 46 55 31 56 BB ) // ...FU1V. .ver 2007:1:1052:2 } why is this in there? it is the wrong version, with the same publickeytoken and some kind or renamed reference to WebChart_19 Im guessing this is my problem, but this 4 lines of text seems impossible to get rid of...     - Using cacheing?? Iâ??m researching the idea of using caching in my application. And I wanted to get other people thoughts that have used it with .NET 2.0. Below is an explanation of the current process: I have an application with several web pages. When any of these pages is first loaded, it retrieves the information from SQL and stores the information in a DataSet. This DataSet is then converted to a Session variable so that it can be used over and over without the need to reconnect to the database to refresh the data. The only time connections to SQL are made is when the user requests to DELETE or UPDATE the physical records. Once the delete/update is complete, I convert the Session variable back to a dataset and perform the same action on the dataset. Next I rebind the dataset back to the control and redisplay the page. All works great and it is fast. But it takes a lot of memory to store those datasets for each user session. Not to mention that if user(A) makes a change to a record, and user (B) is view the same record, b/c they are session variables, user (B) will never see user (A) changes. So I wanted to try using disk caching where user (A) requests a record, it gets cached on the server hard drive. SQL update and deletes happen as they do now, but I update the cache instead of a dataset in memory. If user (B) accesses the same record, and this record is already in cache from another user, it reads the cache instead of connecting to SQL to issue the SELECT statements. This cache would need to reside on the drive for say 24 hrs. All this to say, have any of you done anything similar? What are thing things I should watch out for? Whatâ??s a good resource to get started using this method in C#.     - Programmatic diagnostic questions about dlls Hi, I am currently working on a diagnostic utility for developers, and some of the things I want to check are whether a dll in a project output folder is locked and cannot be over-written, or if an incorret version of a dll has been cached in the temporary internet files folder. A friend said that I could possibly open a file stream on a dll, and attempt to lock it, and if it failed, it would give info on which process currently had it locked, which might solve the first requirement - does anyone else have any ideas or suggestions on this? As for checking for cached dlls, I was thinking that I could maybe use reflection on the dlls in the temp inet folder to check for inconsistent dll versions, but I'm not sure if this is the best approach, or would even work - suggestions?     - Is This Overkill? I've been maintaining some source code, and I've noticed some radical inconsistency in the code, particularly in the way that parameters are validated. I've noticed that this seems to have been pretty much the case throughout my career. For instance, consider the following block: If siteId <= 0 Then Throw New ArgumentOutOfRangeException("siteId") End If If name Is Nothing Then Throw New ArgumentNullException("name") End If If name = String.Empty Then Throw New ArgumentException("Empty strings are not permitted.", "name") End If If buildingIdToIgnore < -1 Then Throw New ArgumentOutOfRangeException("buildingIdToIgnore") End If Sometimes, this code is collapsed as follows: If siteId <= 0 Then Throw New ArgumentOutOfRangeException("siteId") If name Is Nothing Then Throw New ArgumentNullException("name") If name = String.Empty Then Throw New ArgumentException("Empty strings are not permitted.", "name") If buildingIdToIgnore < -1 Then Throw New ArgumentOutOfRangeException("buildingIdToIgnore") Sometimes, it's omitted altogether. Somtimes, not all of the parameters to the procedure are validated. And in many cases, the messages aren't consistent from one parameter validation to the next. (Resource files would go a long way towards solving that, but that's a whole different thread.) What I've been pondering for some time is a way to make it easier to validate method parameters. My *theory* is that it's a lot of gangly code to write If...Then...Throw...End If, which leads to short-cuts and, eventually, outright omissions. So, a way to abbreviate that and make the code clearer might help to encourage consistent use of parameter validation, which should (in theory) improve code quality throughout the system. So I have this model I'm working on, and before I go completely off the deep end with it, I thought I'd run it by you to see what you thought of it. Essentially, it's based on NUnit asserts to validate parameters consistently and clearly. So, the code above is changed to this: Validate.That(siteId, "siteId").IsNotNegative() Validate.That(name, "name").IsNotNullOrEmpty() Validate.That(buildingIdToIgnore, "buildingIdToIgnore").IsGreaterThan(-2) Validate.That(connection).IsOpenAndIsNotNull() My tests for the model are going very well. I think that once I get it going, it could provide a very cool, extensible validation framework for parameters. The "framework" is in a separate class library, and the messages are in a string resource file, providing consistency. The big caveat, of course, is that there's no guarantee that it solves the *enforcement* problem. There's also the problem that FxCop thinks I'm not validating parameters when I am. So the question I have is, is this even worth doing? When an existing code base is refactored to use it, it looks much cleaner, and appears to be easier to read and maintain. But the question remains: is this a real problem, or am I addressing an issue that doesn't really exist? Your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!     - DataTable.Merge() I'm a little confused about DataTable.Merge(). I have two DataTable objects with the same structure - dtOrig and dtCurrent. The end result I'm trying to achieve is to get all the rows in dtCurrent that are in some way different from the corresponding rows in dtOrig so those new/ modified/deleted rows can be processed. My idea was to use dtOrig.Merge(dtCurrent), and then call dtOrig.GetChanges(). But what I found is that when the preserveChanges Merge() parameter is 'false' (or not supplied) the values in dtOrig do get updated, but the RowState stays 'Unchanged'. When preserveChanges is 'true' then the RowState for all rows becomes 'Modified' but the values in dtOrig are NOT actually updated! What am I missing here? Is there a better way to go about this?     - SslStream caching and Vista: Hi. When my client program runs under XP and calls a server (solaris in this case) via an SslStream all is well. The client may make multiple calls and multiple authentication calls and be fine. Running the client under Vista, when the second authentication call is made it returns the following SSPI error: "A call to the SSPI failed, see inner exception" which reads "the Local Security Authority cannot be contacted" Well that was pretty mystifying so I looked at what was going on with ethereal. Apparently, on the second authentication go-round the client asks the server to re-use a session Id. The client responds and then Vista rejects a re-used session Id (even though it asked to do that). What I have found out is that the .net framework seems to cache SslStream sessions automatically, I have not found any way to turn this off for Vista - any ideas on how to do this? The question applies more generally, but I'm going to ask in the context of a Control. How does one decide whether to write an "override" method to an event and when to simply add an event handler for that event? My current thought is that when you are not inheriting from the base class, you register a delegate (duh, since you obviously have no way to override the method in that case), and when you are inheriting from the base class, you override the method (the main reason here being that if you're inheriting from the base class, you want your new functionality to always work, rather than relying on your delegate remaining in the event handler list). In other words, override when you can, add an event handler if you can't. Is it really as simple as that? Or are there other factors I should be considering?     - convert an object to string and back (in a culture independent fashion) to store user preference in our application we have an 'hand written' XML file. (as opposed to XmlSerializer written one, which crash sometimes, on some user's computer, for some unknown reason.. but I'm digressing) In this XML file I store object value, which I convert to string (when writting) and from string (when reading) with a couple of simple function which (should) do a reversible conversion (using TypeConverter) (functions below). Unfortunately, for some Enum, (namely System.Windows.Forms.Keys) I got a culture dependent string, even though I specify CultureInfo.InvariantCulture as an argument in my ConvertXXX method with the TypeConverter. Even using 'new CultureInfo("en")' do not fix this behavior.     - Windows Workflow - What basic tutorials? What's going on here? I thought I was an experienced programmer but I'm looking at the beginning WWF tutorial (Simple Expense Report) and I'm baffled.     - Truly cross platform? The thread bellow titled 'Determining if two paths are the same' brings to mind some of the first 'things' I had heard way back when DotNet started. It was going to be the panacea of cross platform development. I am asking the question here of the group to find out if everyone (anyone) thinks this has come (or is coming) to fruition. I think that perhaps it has gone a long way towards making it simpler to communicate between platforms but I am not sure if the framework itself has actually made it to the cross platform development hall of fame just yet. What do you folks think is the possibility of truly doing that? Looking at the mono project and actually trying to use it in some productive manner has showed me that this is far off. Just trying to get it working along with GDK and Mono-develop on a fedora Core 6 system was an exercise in futility. While I can understand what drives the open source community I honestly can't understand what keeps it going when stuff is that hard. I can install VS.NET 2005 and be developing in an hour.     - Locking Desktop and Threading Issue Hi, I have an application that displays forms on the users desktop, what I am doing with it is having a SystemEvents SessionSwitchEventHandler to capture the lock of the desktop, I would like to kill the forms when this event is captured, that piece is fine, but I would like to sleep the app until the SessionSwitchReason.SessionUnlock happens then I can wake it again and go the correct part of the code? Can I wake a sleeping thread, or should I not sleep the thread at all, is there another way to get the thread to sleep or hibernate and then wake up?     - .Net Windows Service ...data access problem Hi, I am writing a .NET windows Service that will access the database every 10 minutes. When the service calls the function in the business services layer which in turn calls the correponding function in data access layer, this DAL function fails.     - Installation problem - MSDN Libs for VS2005 I'm trying to jury-rig an installation of MSDN for VS2005 from ISO disks. The company I'm working for has an 'install drive' so I'm not sure of the pedigree of these directories. Essentially, since I don't have a CD burner at my disposal, I'm trying to run the installation directly from the ISO images using Microsoft's Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel v2.0.1.1. The problem is as follows: It doesn't matter if I run the setup on the first MSDN disk or call MSDN installation directly from VS2005's setup screen. Either way I get an error message saying: "Error 1311. Source file not found. U:\_17693_RTL_x86_enu_NET_Framework_SDK_HxS.cab. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it." I should note that given the current mounting scheme, the 3 ISO images are disks T, U, and V and presumably software on the T drive should be running. So how could it know about the U drive in the first place and why didn't it issue a standard Insert Disk prompt? (The file definitely exists and I can even copy it.)     - The Interlocked on the Edge of Forever I've got a quick question that's been bugging me for a long, long time: Let's say I've got a member variable (in a heavily threaded app): private int _firstTime = 0; To make changes to this is easy enough: InterlockedExchange(ref _firstTime, 1); ... or I can use the InterlockedCompareExchange: int oldValue = InterlockedCompareExchange(ref _firstTime, 1, 0); No problems here. ... but, if I just want to read the value, I CANNOT do: int myValue = _firstTime; or if (_fistTime==0) Doing these requires a memory barrier of some type (volatile variable, monitor, etc) to have any degree of reliability. Now, reading the value out using InterlockedCompareExchange always seemed a bit silly to me. I don't want to always write: int myValue = InterlockedCompareExchange(ref _firstTime, Int32.MinValue, Int32.MinValue); I've never found (although not for lack of looking): int myValue = InterlockedRead(ref _firstTime); Of the code that I write, reading the value, and branching based on it's value, is much more common than writing to the value. I have, in the past, used volitile variables for this - but I've stopped due to the various issues regarding volatiles (non atomic reads & writes). Is there a concensus on the best way to do this? It seems like all the solutions are.... incomplete. Essentially I'm looking for a volitile varaiable that is atomically read and written.     - tcpclient connect security exception - unauthorized Hi all, I have a tcpclient and server setup client and server both different machines. The client when run under administrator credentials connects fine, but when run under normal user, the tcpclient connect is refused with unauthorised. All of this is on same netword/domain. tried right click to get to the context menu of the application, it doesn't
work at all.

Does anyone know what causes it?

There shouldn't be any differences between Windows version in their ability
to show ContextMenus, so there must be something in your application that
prevents the menu from showing on your friend's computer.

Do you have any code to dynamically populate the menu and/or control when it
is shown? If yes, can you post the code? Also, which operating system is
your friend using?

And, does your application use more than on ContextMenu? Are they all not
working on her PC, or just one?
