    - Cannot get audio resource in Compact Framework Hello, I am developing PocketPC application in .NET, I defined audio resource BeepSound using project properties. When I want to get resource using MyApp.Properties.Resources.BeepSound in C#, the byte array is returned, it has correct length, but contains only binary zeros instead of the sound. Sound is played correctly from resource editor in VS, and regardless of the Persistence property, the I can see the sound correctly included in the resulting executable. I can succesfully get BMP images this way in PPC application. I also tried to do similar thing in full Windows Application, and it works correctly, but there I am getting audio resource as UnmanagedMemoryStream instead of byte[] as in Compact Framework project. The ResXFileCodeGenerator tool generates this access method: internal static byte[] BeepSound { get { object obj = ResourceManager.GetObject("BeepSound", resourceCulture); return ((byte[])(obj)); } } , but object retrieved contains all zeroes, though length seems correct.     - Process priority problem! Hi, Using set priority option in task manager I've changed priority of my service to RealTime. Now when I try to return to Normal I receive "Access denied" message. I tried to uninstal service, build new version, delete registry entries and when I start that new version the priority of service is again RealTime. How to return to Normal priority? Is there any place where windows writes process priorities? I even tried to put in different folder, rename it... Service is developed in C# 2.0, runs on Win XP SP2 Any help is appriciated!     - Possible to install .NET Framework via ActiveX? Forgive me if this is naive, but can I install the .NET Framework 2.0 via an ActiveX which is embedded in an HTML page? In addition, I want to register some 3rd-party COM/ActiveX components and then install a few assemblies in the GAC. The scenario I'm trying to satisfy is an intranet/internet user logs into our webapp (via IE), an embedded ActiveX detects .NET is not installed, installs it, registers other COM/ActiveX stuff, installs some assemblies, and then moves forward in the webapp (or asked to logout/login or reboot).     - Menu / Tool Strips.. Why wasn't the toolbar, menu bar items developed as a single BarItem and then allowed us to build as Toolbar or a MenuBar. This way I could just have one click event. I do have in my code in a method for say a toolbarItem click.. But when I add the same to a menu, I have to attach a item click event and call the method.     - Monitor.Wait problem Hi, I am relatively new to NET Threading and learning from net examples and books I got a problem that is not mentioned anyware. Let's say thread1 does following: Monitor.Enter(o); try { Do X; Monitor.Wait(o); Do.Y; } finally { Monitor.Exit(o); } Thread2 does: Monitor.Enter(o); try { Do A; Monitor.Pulse(o); Do.B; } finally { Monitor.Exit(o); } On my dual core processor it happens sometimes that Thread2 ends before Thread 1 starts, though they are started in order: Thread1, Thread2!! And there is the problem: At the moment Thread1 calls Monitor.Wait, thread2 is already finished, so there is no thread that can call Pulse So, Thread1 blocks forever. QUESTION: Why does Monitor.Wait not acquire the lock back if no other thread holds the lock. How can I detect this situation and avoid it in an elegant way?     - BUG: Strongly-typed DataTable GetSchemaSerializable method Hi, I've created a strongly-typed DataSet that contains one DataTable. My intent is to return this DataTable from a WebService that will be consumed by a Windows Form. In my windows application, when I add a reference to the Web Service, the proxy code that is generated in the Reference.vb file throws the following errors: "sub 'ReadXmlSerializable' cannot be declared 'Overrides' because it does not override a sub in a base class." AND "Protected Overrides Function GetSchemaSerializable() As System.Xml.Schema.XmlSchema' cannot override 'Protected Overridable Function GetSchemaSerializable() As System.Xml.Schema.XmlSchema' because they differ by their return types." I can workaround this by removing the overrides directive from these methods, but a warning is then generated saying they should be marked with the overrides directive. I was having this problem earlier today in the Designer.vb file associated with the .xsd file of my DataSet before the WebService project was added to the solution and got rid of it by deleting everything and starting with a fresh solution and recreating my strongly-typed DataSet. I'm a bit farther along in the solution this time, so starting over again is not an option. In the meantime I can live with the warnings, but I have about 20 or 30 more strongly-typed DataSets and DataTables to create, so a fix for this would be great. Thanks.     - .NET Framework 1.1 installation after 2.0 hi, sql server 2005 brings .net framework (dnfw) 2.0. but for a specific application we need dnfw 1.1. there is no way around this! so installing dnfw 1.1 after 2.0 ends in an error message saying that "the latest version is already installed". we are worried about the fact that uninstalling dnfw 2.0, installing dnfw 1.1, reinstalling dnfw 2.0 can lead to a broken sql 2005. therefore we want to install dnfw 1.1 after 2.0 without uninstalling dnfw 2.0. is there any hack known, how this can be done? thanks in advance, paul Tag: RichTextBox troubles Tag: 114988

I would like to do this on a worker thread, which I do when I create the first level of nodes. However, whilst Treeview has an invoke method, TreeNode does not appear to.     - Timer hangs Hello I have a big problem with a timer (System.Threading.Timer) in a windows service. Sometimes the callback-method of the timer seems to hang. It can work more than one week without problem and suddenly the timer stands still. The timer check regulary if it's midnight. If not, then it sleeps again for some time. Suddenly the event to check the time doesn't comes anymore. :-( There is no more code in the callback-method. The problem appears on two different Windows 2003 Server with .Net SP1.     - garbage collection for hastable. Hello all, I am writing a class to cache xml and dataset objects that would be required frequently by my application. I also have a time to check the last access of the obect... If the object is not used for some time I would like to remove it from the cashe to free memmory. I am using hastable to store these objects. What I observe is that even if I remove the object from the hastable the memmory is not freed even if I wait a long time (more than 10 mins) to for the Garbage collection cycle to happen. To make sure there was an issue with the garbage collection I wrote a test application. I declared a class variable for Hashtable in one function I am filling the hastable like below for(int i = 0 ; i < 10000; i++) { HTT.Add(Guid.NewGuid().ToString(),new string('d',40000)); } In another function I am calling HTT.Clear() to delete the items during this time I am observing the memmory useage in the taskmanager. The memmory useage rises as expected in the first function call but does not come down after the second function is called. I waited enough for the GC cycle more thant 10 mins... after the HTT.Clear function call if I call CG.Colloect(); then memmory was coming down. I did not want to do that in my app. please suggest. Here is my problem: I am using Visual Studio 2005 Professional edition. When I clicked 'Select Certificate' in the Properties page to sign a project output, VS became not responding.     - "Cross-thread operation not valid" without threading!! Hi, In my VB.NET 2005 application I'm generating and sending emails using the outlook-object model (2003). When a mail is Send (MailObject_Send), I raise an event in a global class, that is caught by all my forms that than refresh the lists with emails. But on the moment I do a MyDataGrid.DataSource = nothing, I get this "Cross-thread operation not valid"-exception: The problem is: I'm not using delegates, backgroundworkers or whatever! Why does this happen? and what is the solution?     - Generate .NET types from C header file? Hi all, The question of reusing C header files in C# comes up frequently and there's really no general solution. I do have a specific problem that I think can be solved and I'd like to get some feedback on. I have a C# app that communicates with an embedded C app via UDP packets. I have to ensure that both sides see the exact same data structure. I know how to do this by defining classes with attributes in C# and defining the appropriate header and compiler switches on the embedded system. I'm wondering if I can have a single source that defines the structure for both systems. Right now I can envision the following solutions: 1) Write a utility that parses the C header and generates the C# class definition. 2) Write a utility that parses some other file format (XML, etc.) and generates both the header and the C# class definition 3) Use C++/CLI to somehow generate a .NET type that gets imported into the C# app. Solutions 1) and 2) are doable but seem kind of tedious and boring. Anyone know if tools like this exist? The C headers have not been written yet and they will be quite simple. No need to parse exotic C constructs.     - .NET 1.1 created event log has only "Not available" properties We are using VB.NET 2003 Diagnostics.EventLog class on Windows 2000 to create our own custom event log. When using Computer Management and doing properties on the event log it only displays "Not available" for the Size, Created, Modified, and Accessed attributes.     - resource leak issues in win xp sp2 w .net 2.0 Hi, we are running XP SP2 with .net 2.0 framework installed we also installed a .net application that we wrote and run it occasionally without problem. however at some point (even with our application not running) but quite a few other windows open our workstations seem to run out of resources. as in. we cannot open any more windows (be it explorer windows, IE windows or any program for that matter). or sometimes the window will "half" open (the window will come up but say the IE tool button will be missing). now if we close an existing window (IE, explorer window , calc and program) we can then open another program (like a 1:1) correlation. the other thing i noticed when i was in this state and i say tried to run a ping using cygwin i got win32 error 1114 user32 could not be loaded. we have seen this on 4 machines now. any ideas?     - no touch request adds .config to url I have a "no touch" deployment app running successfully on XP. All machines use the 1.1 framework. When a url specifying an exe file is entered on an XP machine, the exe is downloaded by the framework (asp.net on the web server machine) and the exe runs on the "client" machine. The first thing it does is download an xml file. This works OK on the XP client. When the same url is entered on a WIN 2000 machine the exe is downloaded but whe it attempts to download the xml file a ConfigurationException is thrown. The client is trying to download a .config file. The .config is tacked on to the end of the url (no matter how many parameters are on the url) and the request fails. BTW, there is no config file associated with the executable. Why is WIN 2000 different than XP in this case? How can I prevent, or catch, this error? Thx Tag: RichTextBox troubles Tag: 114913

    - database connection loss Hallo! I'm working with C# .NET 2.0, implementing Client/Server Applications which are connecting via Network to SQL-Server or Oracle Databases. To stay independent from the underlaying Database I use System.Data.Common.DBConnection and .DBCommand. How can I keep aware from connection losses (network not availeable, db-server not available...)? Are there any strategies to detect this broken connections, and how can I implement reconnecting to the database? The only solution I figured out, is creating a thread which frequntly performs a SELECT 1 (MSSQL) or SELECT 1 FROM DUAL (Oracle) within a try-catch block. When an exception occurs I have to send my other worker-threads to sleep, till I'm able to reopen the database connection and my Select-Statement works again. Then I have to trigger the other threads to reopen their connections and continue working (every thread gots his own DBConnection). For me this seems a little bit to complicated and insecure. It also could happen that one of the worker threads gots a timeout due locking or delayed server responstime, and will loose his Connection in fact of this exception. Such, or similar problems I can not get handled with my solution. Are there any suggestions, patterns or automathisms with ADO 2.0? with friendly regards Martin Tag: RichTextBox troubles Tag: 114912

Hi All I was testing my understanding of Hashtables and I thought that if I override GetHashCode then i could add an object to hashTable like so: Dim ht As New Hashtable ht.Add(s1, s1) ht.Add(s2, s2) ht.Add(s3, s3) Where s* are instance of a student class that overrides GetHashCode to return the StudentID (code at end of post). I shouldn't add it like: ht.Add(s1.GetHashCode(), s1) as the HashTable calls GetHashCode on the Key for me. This should then store the Hash (The ID returned from GHC) as the Key and the student as the object. However if you loop through the HashTable with: Dim de As DictionaryEntry For Each de In ht Console.WriteLine("Key = {0}, Value = {1}", de.Key, de.Value) Next It shows that the student is stored as both the Key and the Value. Does this mean that you should just add objects to the HashTable like: Dim ht As New Hashtable ht.Add(s1, Nothing) ht.Add(s2, Nothing) ht.Add(s3, Nothing) Seems to me I have misunderstood something here and thw whole point of a HashTable is to use a key to get to a value, was hoping somebody could clear this up for me.     - menus Hi all, I am creating an application that has menu options, with a 'Navigation' menu that will re-direct the user to the appropriate form when clicked. I have a Case structure in a class file for the application to access because there are about 12 different forms to choose from. When the appropriate selection is clicked, it will call a method in the aforementioned class file, and pass a global variable to the method. Is the menu index based?     - SmtpClient uses lowercase headers and an odd date format when sending a MailMessage When you send mail using an SmtpClient object (System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient), the headers it adds like "from:", "to:" and "date:" are in lower case. This seems to be a red flag to some spam filters, so it would be good to be able to specify that they be proper-cased, i.e., "From:", "To:" and "Date:". Also the date format used doesn't include the weekday, e.g., "31 Mar 2006 07:25:10 +1200" instead of the more common "Fri, 31 Mar 2006 07:25:10 +1200" which is also a red flag to some spam filters, and so it would be good if it used the latter.     - GAC and development So we've determined that our assemblies will be getting placed in the GAC going forward. I have done a bit of research and determined a process based on that research on how to manage the assemblies for deployment. Here is my issue, all of the information I find talks about what you should do for deployment to prod, I've not found very much on how to handle this with a team of developers. Where do we put the assemblies? How do we get each of the dev boxes updated on a daily basis? How do each of the projects get updated to reference the current build of the assembly? How do we deploy current builds, but not screw up anything that may be a work in progress on the developers box? E.G. they are responsible for fixes a bug in a shared assembly.     - TimeZone.ToLocalTime changed in 2.0? We have code that used an instance of a timezone (for a timezone other than local), and called ToLocalTime(), passing in a UTC time. In version 1.1, the return value was the time in this time zone. I have found that in 2.0, the return value is the local time for the machine. We could do that already with DateTime's ToLocalTime() method. I have found no combination of values for the new DateTime.Kind flag that gets me back to what worked in 1.1. Why was this changed?     - Datagrid Issue - Limit to numeric input? I have a windows form that contains two datagrids (framework 2.0/). I would like to limit two of the columns to numeric entries only. IE If the user types a letter or anything other than 0123456789. then I want to supress the key. I have tried turning on keypreview on the form (I'm using this method to limit entries in other textboxes/controls) but this method does not capture the keys once the datagrid goes into "edit mode". Ideas on how to do this would be great. BTW: When you set the format option of the datgrid column to format for numeric, it still allows the end user to type alpha characters (a-z). Hi all!

I have richtextbox in my program for viewing rtf-files containing
tables(which contain many lines in a table row). When I'm opening them in MS
Word - everything is fine, but When I open them using my program in
richtextbox I see that table grid shown only for the first textline and then
I see text.

Any suggestions??
