Reasons to use dot net

How many companies use dot net and the reasons to use dot net. Basically i
am tyring to find out usage stats on dot net. I need to convience my
friends to use dot net for a big project.

We use it on all varieties of web applications, most mission critical. I
have consulted for three different companies in the past two years that are
exclusively .NET.

As far as convincing, it would really depend on what you were doing. .NET is
not a one-size-fits-all tool.

All the statistics I know are from MS, so they aren't *that* reliable. But
IMO that's the wrong way to argue anyway. I still remember all those "but
nobody uses OOP" arguments not-so-long-ago. Take yourself a little time to
discover the most importand features of the .net framework, have a look at
the C# language design, maybe at the 2.0 betas. After that you should have
an arsenal of good arguments to convince your friends.

(If you're afraid that noone is using .net, you can simply watch this ng.
It's wouldn't be that active if .net was dead, would it?)

Also, remember that over the last several months, MS has kind of scaled back on slapping the ".NET" label on everything. dotnet is still there but the way it was marketed seemed to be confusing some as to what it really was (at least some of the articles I have read indicated that, correct me if I'm wrong). Therefore you won't necessarily see MS, or others' products bragging about being ".NET" but it is out there, and is more an under the hood kind of thing.

Also, some things, rather than being ".NET" are referred to as being done in "Managed Code" which means the same thing.
