    - DataGridViewTextBoxCell and binding Hello there, I wrote my own DataDridViewTextBoxCellEx, inherited from DataGridViewTextBoxCell which accepts an integer (index) as value and displays the correspondign string out of a dictionary collection. Now I want to use data binding to connect this collection (a private member and public property of my DataGridViewTextBoxCellEx) to a database. Principly I want to do exactly, what the DataGridViewComboBoxCell does, so I could use that and overwrite the paint event, but I planed to extend my TextBox with an icon which then must be binded too.     - Dynamic language dependent ressources Hello, how would you solve in general the following requirement: my application will ask you to login with a language, so you have installed on your desktop one version of my application, providing multilanguage support that means text, description, column names etc. will be displayed in your login language. The issue around translations of table columns is solved by myself, I will dynamically display language dependent column titles (using SQL table for translation of column names and updating the controls which are bound to this a data column). But how should I handle all the rest? I'm using already the project resources (text strings) and fill "caption" and "text" and other properties of the controls by these resource strings. So is possible to change the resource file at run-time to get all text etc. displayed in your language? If not, should I maintain in SQL a table doing the translation for me how I did for SQL table column titles? I don't want to compile individual program versions for each language, install them on the computer and the user has to select the exe file of the specific language each time he is using the program, this wouldn't be nice. The timeformat mentioned in the header, is produced by outlook and other mailers and in Javascript, but it seems this is not an implemented standard formatstring (such as "r").     - Webexception Error FTP 501 Hi everyone, I am trying to get the WebRequestMethods.Ftp.DownloadFile working using the 101 Samples for the Base Class Library from MS. I can get through the authentication part OK but when the code gets to: Dim ftpResponse As FtpWebResponse = CType(ftpRequest.GetResponse, FtpWebResponse) I receive a Webexception error of "The remote server returned an error: (501) Syntax error in parameters or arguments. I searched around a bit but didn't find anything more specific on the 501 error. I am fairly new to VB 2005 (moving on from VB6) but I have used the wininet.dll (InternetOpen, InternetConnect, FtpGetFile) to do the same ftp download in VB6. I didn't really want to use that again since the framework 2.0 has the ftp functions. Also the server that I ftp to is an AS/400 system, but I really don't remember having to do anything special with the code I used in VB6.     - VSTS Source Control hanging... When I try to use VSTS Source Control, it hangs indefinitely. For example, when I try to edit a workspace, or get latest, visual studio hangs. If I press Ctrl+F4, it comes back to life, as if a hidden window were closed. Also, from the command prompt, tf.exe hangs when I try to do any operations on source control.     - Setting text on Word Bookmarks from .NET Hello, I'm trying to open a Word template file, set some bookmark values, then save the document from within a .NET C# Windows application (.NET 1.1, using VS.NET 2003 & Office 2003). I've been following the information given on the CodeProject (http://www.codeproject.com/aspnet/wordapplication.asp). Modifying his wrapper class a little, I'm running into a problem. VS is refusing to compile the wrapper because it doesn't accept the Bookmarks.Item method. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated. Relevant code for the class below.     - Sql Server / VS.net 2005 debugger transaction lock problem Hello usenet, I am currently debugging an application that uses SqlTransactions. When running in the debugger, it seems that my transaction ignores the isolation level and locks everything in SQL Server... If I put a breakpoint before SqlTransaction.Commit gets called, all the tables used throughout the transaction are locked (ie. I can't select anything in a separate Query Analyzer window.) Is there a way my transaction can honor its isolation level, or am I doomed to annoy the hell of my coworkers when I'm debugging some code? Thanks for your time!     - How to convert KeyCode ? Hi everyone, I developped a UserControl and for this control I need to handle the + and - keys. The KeyPress event doesn't suit because I want to have an effet when the key is down and when the key is up. So, I handle the KeyDown and KeyUp events, but I received KeyCode and not the translated character. If the + or - on the numpad is pressed, I receive KeyCode = Add / Subtract If the + or - on the main keyboard is pressed, I received (first for + , the shift KeyCode) and then OemPlus, OemMinus. I do not want to use a trick like memorize that the shift key is pressed before the plus key is pressed because if the keyboard is configured differently, it may be not working.     - Issues running the .NET v2.0.50727 x64 on Windows XP Pro x64 I have suucessfully been able to configure and execute 32bit 1.1 and 2.0 applications on my develpopment box however once I try to run 2.0 x64 I am getting a DNS error on localhost and I have not been able to resolve this issue and I was hoping someone could point me in the correct direction.     - ClickOnce Deployment I have developed a program and published it using clickonce. I can run the program on my computer just fine. But when I deploy using ClickOnce it will not run. I copies the files over but refuses to run. I checked permissions and set the program to full trust windows authentication. I logged on as admin on another computer run the clickonce update and it failed to run. I ran it on another machine with VS 2005 and got the following error: An exception 'System.InvalidOperationException' has occured in DefaultDomain.     - VB6 App Referencing VB.NET DLL Debug Nightmare HI All, I have a VB6 App and a VB.NET DLL. The VB.NET DLL Is used to call a web service. When I compile the app is works fine but when I try to debug the VB6 Code I get this error message: "File or assembly name GetGantnerTxns, or one of its dependancies, was not found." GetGantnerTxns is the name of the VB.NET DLL This is making the debugging difficult as I have to use msgbox's and recompile. Its driving me nuts!     - dotNet 1.1 compatibility with 2.0 I have a .Net 1.1 application that starts through internet explorer and uses webservice for data-retrieval. It is an application that runs for 3 years now (so it was first created with 1.0 framework and later compiled with 1.1). To get it running i had to add it to the trusted sites and set security settings of dotnet to full trust. It all worked fine, but now there is a problem with the 2.0 framework. It seems that when i run the application it no longer uses the 1.1 framework, but the 2.0 one, but this causes some SecurityExceptions. I'll post the error below. When i adjust security settings for 2.0 framework (set to full trust like i did with 1.1), the application will start, but there are still some securityerrors that come up in the program itself. Problem is that it is computer dependant, my old pc and our terminal server don't have the problem, my new pc and my clean win xp + sp2 on vmware do have the problem. second problem is that the .net 2.0 configuration is only available when vs2005 is installed, so on my vmware i can't even adjust the settings... need some help with this... here is the exception: ************** Exception Text     - Convert RTF to PDF (C#) I got the following problem: an RTF is loaded and stored in memory in a form of a byte array. I need to convert it to a PDF without the necessety to store it on the disk (i.e. I need either byte array or a stream). I tried to use TX Text Control which works fine except that it does not convert the barcode that appears in RTF to the PDF correctly.     - Partial classes not good OO design Does Microsoft even bother involving developers anymore in their process of developing new "features"? I've spent about four hours with VS2005 now and can't believe the list of problematic improvements I've generated in that short time. Then I run across this partial class feature. What a mind bending stupid idea. This isn't an object oriented concept at all - it's very much akin to using a preprocessor to insert code. The ability to "hide" code is pretty much covered by the OO model - it's called encapsulation. Hiding UI code is the reason given for this "innovation". What happened to patterns such as MVC? Even a UI helper class would be a better idea. UI code could have been placed in a generated class which is then included as a member in the developer's "business" logic class. At least there would be a clear separation of function with this approach. Splitting code for a single class into multiple files is such an obvious, bad, hack. It seems to me the last resort to solving a programming problem is to change the underlying language specification. What a horrible precedent to set. Microsoft language "architects" ought to be really ashamed of themselves for permitting this feature to be added to the .Net language syntax.     - Binding HttpListener to a free port Hi, When providing the HttpListener with a list of 'prefixes' to respond to there doesn't appear to be an option for binding to an arbitrary freely available port, and if there is then there doesn't seem to be a mechanism for discovering that port by the calling code. I'm happy to be proven wrong here but given this situation, the obvious approach now would be to programatically query the OS for a list of used and/or available ports, and to pick one of the available ones. This may introduce the problem of a port being allocated in the time between querying the OS and binding to the port, but I can handle that exception and keep trying until a successful bind occurs (hopefully!). Am I going about this the right way? Is there an alternative to HttpListener? I suppose I could revert to using HttpListener and perhaps re-using the provided HTTP classes for handling the HTTP protocol?     - XSD.EXE vs System.Xml.Serialization problems I'm using the System.Xml.Schema and System.Xml.Serialization objects to generate XSD dynamically and then the CSharpCodeProvider to generate classes. When using xsd.exe with the "/dataset" switch it generates just what I want. When I do it through the framework I get the equivalent of xsd.exe with the "/classes" switch.     - Customization In Web Application All, Using VS 2005, C#.NET, SQL Server 2005, W2K3. We are developing a web application that would be shared by numerous customers for information management. Some of those customers want variations on the usual form layout. For example, we have a form where the user can enter their dependents information (parents, siblings, spouse, kids, etc.), but we know one of our customers wants to include additional information on that form that none of the other customers would use (company specific insurance coverage). Based on our experience with our C/S version of the product, we can expect to see many more requests like this. There are 3 ways to do this that I see. 1. Create a separate web application for that customer and host it on a different web server. 2. Add the custom fields to the single web application but hide the extras based on the customer using it. 3. Allow the customer to add the fields themselves and store them for just that customer. Pros and cons that I see. 1. Quick to implement, but costly in new infrastructure, and would end up difficult to maintain. 2. Still relatively quick to develop, and uses existing infrastructure, but would create complex forms. 3. Difficult to develop, but would use existing infrastructure and wouldn't need extra maintenance. Personally, I'd like to use 3. That is... Design the application so that each form includes standard fields, but a customer can add new labels, textboxes, drop-down combos, lists, etc., themselves and doing so doesn't require us to change any code or the database schema. While this would be a no-brainer in an C/S application, it gets a little more difficult in a web app since the only client they use is a browser. Any thoughts? Hi everyone, I hope you can comment on this -- I'm pretty darned sure that either some of the MethodInfo properties are wrong or the Microsoft documentation is wrong. Please have a look at the program below. It attempts to print out the accessibility (i.e., "visibility") of each method in the class. I've included the program along with its output. The Microsoft documentation for MethodInfo tells us that the IsAssembly property "Gets a value indicating whether this method can be called by other classes in the same assembly." Okay, great. Public methods can certainly be called from other classes in the same assembly, right? Not according to the program below. The output indicates a public method cannot be called from other classes within its assembly because the IsAssembly property is false. There are other inconsistencies in the output as well - for example, an internal method cannot be called from a subclass in the same assembly. Read the Microsoft documentation very carefully. You'll see that the IsPrivate and IsPublic properties refer to the accessibility of the member itself. For example, m.IsPublic indicates whether or not m is public. In contrast, IsFamily, IsAssembly, IsFamilyAndAssembly and IsFamilyOrAssembly indicate whether the method in question can be called from a method with that accessibility. For example, m.IsAssembly indicates whether m can "be called by other classes in the same assembly". This is distinctly different from saying that m has internal accessibility. So, certainly any public method can "be called by other classes in the same assembly", right? Not according to the output below.
