    - Bloated Files... Hello, We're moving a project from MFC to .net. And we've been able to make some great improvements on the way - especially on the GUI side (big hurray for the guys who made the propertyGrid). But when it comes to Serialization - well I don't know. Using BinaryFormatter the file is 436 times larger then the file created with MFC. And just a hint for the problem in this: the file with 2.2 million objects was 7MB and now it is 3GB. (oh - not to mention that the load time was 30seconds and now well over 15minutes). Now I've read a lot about all the different options and have tested quite of it. I love the way all the formatting stuff fits together e.g. in remoting and I can see the merits. But, just in the off chance that I am overlooking something - is there a better Serialization scheme hidden somewhere in .net or has somebody else sat down an implemented a "MFC" similar way? One of the public methods in the Environment class is 'GetLogicalDrives', which returnes a String[]... What methods/classes allow the programmer to querry the types of devides returned in this array... For example, I need to know, if the device is a 'removable' device (i.e. memory stick, CD-ROM, etc)... What class method could be used to identify these devices (from a string no less)...     - What good is this automatic garbage collector? I have a simple .NET application with two or three listViews which are filled with icons and when the user click on the proper item, they display the related images. I use "image = null ; " for all images that have been used and are going to be closed. This is how ever no way to reduce the memory consumption. I have noticed , using the task manager, that garbage collector doesn't actually do any collections unless the computer becomes low on memory. This is very foolish, and what good is a garbage collector which doesn't collect the disposed objects when they aren't needed anymore? Besides, calling CG.Collect() is usually avoided for performance and speed. What else can i do? I got this exe to run when called from a windows application in VB.NET. When I tried to do the same using a webservice, the process.start runs without error and I do not get any errors or output. No result files are generated. Can someone tell me why this may be happening. I did create another exe in VB which basically writes to a file. I called this exe from the webservice and it worked and also created my file. I get this exception raised in my small C# tool whenever the HTTP server returns HTTP/1.1 200 OK with no more data in the response body. If there are some other data after 200 OK, then no WebException is thrown. Can it be that the reason of WebException in this case is the absence of the response body? Because in RFC2616 it is mentioned that in case when response contains no data the correct HTTP answer code must be "204 No Content".     - Application Quitting with no Error I'm using Aspects for my middle-tier data access, and on call interception the application quits without error. It's inconsistent and I've found no solid repro. I'm assuming the CLR is encountering an error it can't handle, but I can't reproduce it consistently so it's hard to determine how this is happening exactly. The object is constructed, and then on property access the application quits. The aspect is used in other places (And is executed well over 50 times) before it crashes. It only crashes in one specific class that doesn't do anything special. Any ideas? Does the CLR have a log file I can access?     - Need to monitor LastAccess I am using FileSystemWatcher to monitor access to a file. I am setting NotifyFilters to LastAccess. The problem here is that this notification only allows monitoring change in Access Date. The event is not fired if only access time is changed. Any workaround for this?     - HRESULTs Hi, I've been asked to write some code that only logs "serious exceptions" (a client... long story). I'm a somewhat young programmer and started w/ .net so I haven't been exposed to Com and Hresults before. My question is: I know that all .net exceptions have an HRESULT protected property. Is it true that there's a relationship between an error/exceptions "level of severity" and its HResult value? For instance: The HResult for a common error such as System.NullReferenceException is: 0x80004003 (Reflector has the integer value as: 2147467261) The HResult for an exception that signifies serious trouble such as System.ExecutionEngineException is: 0x80131506. Aka 2146233082 Would it be possible for me to define an HRESULT "threshold" and log all exceptions that are above or below such a value? Or is there no relationship between severity and an exception's HRESULT value? I suppose the other alternative is to use multiple exception filters but assuming that my "relationship" assumption is correct the user one if statement would be more simple and scalable. I know the Logging Block in the new Enterprise Library can do this but Iâ??ve been asked to implement a solution in the next couple of days and havenâ??t delved far enough into the Enterprise library to use it in a real project yet.     - How do I launche browser maximized each time? I am running Windows XP, IE 6.0, and VB.NET, all with the latest service packs. Originally, whenever I would press F5 from VB.NET to start my web application, I.E. would launch full screen (which is 1024x768 on my computer). (I think I had the browser screen stretched to 1024x768 rather than using the Maximize button). Then I changed my Windows XP resolution to 640x480 to see how my web application would look. Then I changed my Windows XP resolution back to the original 1024x780. But now, each time I press F5 from within VB.NET web application, it launches IE at a resolution of 640x480. Regardless of whether I stretch the browser window or use its maximize button, the browser will launch at 640x480 (not maximized) the next time I press F5 to launch my VB.NET web application. How can I make IE launch maximized (or with a resolution of 1024x768) each time I press F5 in VB.NET? NOTE: If I just launch IE manually from my desktop, it DOES start in Maximized mode, so the root cause appears to be within VB.NET not IE. Thanks for your help.     - How to use interfaces properly... Ok, I have been testing some things and now I have questions about it. I created a dll assembly that contains just one interface (called ITestInterface), which in turn just has one string property called TestName. I built that project and then closed it. Then, I created a windows forms project and added a reference to that assembly (it's named MyInterfaceTest). Now, before I did anything else, I ran the project and a blank form came up. That was as expected. Then I added the "Implements MyInterfaceTest.ITestInterface" line and it added the property code for me. I built the project again and it ran fine. Then I changed the "Copy Local" property on the reference to "false".     - TlbImp marshals array as single ref When I run TlbImp.exe on my COM dll, the IDL following has an array of longs: [local] HRESULT SomeMethod ([in] short nNumBlocks, [in, size_is(nNumBlocks)] long *alBlocks, [out, retval] long *plRetVal); The output creates this method, with a ref int where the array should be: int SomeMethod (short nNumBlocks, ref int alBlocks); I have also tried using 'long alBlocks[]' instead of the pointer, but that doesn't work either. The [in, size_is(..)] *should* be indicating to TlbImp that it's an array. I have temporarily gotten around this issue by writing this command to a batch file & launching the batch file without arguments, but would like to launch it directly from .NET. I added a reference to OWC components in my project and I have a form with an AxSpreadsheet control in it. However, AxSpreadsheet is a Web control and I am running into stumbling blocks.     - Debugging Hi, Im running a .net program I have made and all runs fine, but randomly it will reset itself without warning . The program is a touchscreen program and runs full screen forms ( borderless ). My first thought was a memory leak so I have been watching memory usage via the task manager. It seems that everytime I perform an action in the program ( all action use datasets and data fetches or local xml fills ) the memory usage increases by 5mb. As a test I performed about 70 actions with the program and at the end found that the memory usage was up close to 150mb. Knowing that the Garbage Collector should be collecting any memory that is out of scope ( all forms containing the datasets are closed ) I left the program running on the login screen for 15mins. When I came back I was presuming that the disgard memory would have been collected. But It hadnt, strangly enough the only way the mem used would drop was when I minimized the program and a few minutes later maximized it again. What im asking is : 1.) Does it sound like a memory leak ? or am I wasting my time looking for a leak as this is perfectly normal action for a program ? 2.) If its not a memory leak - what could be causing my program to reset itself ? on the initial form I added an onclose check ( yes / no msgbox ) as a test, but when it reset this check doesnt show. 3.) If it is a memory leak how do I begin tracking it ? I have no experience of finding this kind of error, as the usual stop and step into obviously wont work.
