WebService and timeout
Hi.
I'm dealing with scenario when call to any web method ends up with timeout
and I try to add the user a chance to retry (wait a little bit)
My service proxy code looks like this:

My scenario is following:
1. BeginInvoke initialize asynch web method call
2. WaitOne waits for Timeout miliseconds
3. WaitOne returns false because timeout occured, and wait screen is
displayed. When user close it the web methos is finished.
4. result1.IsCompleted is true so I expect that EndInvoke shall return the
results but it throws excpetion "timeout" !!!. Why?
Everything works fine if timeout doesn't occure.

SharedPerformanceCounter.CreateInstance exception
We have written a SOAP Extension assembly that writes timings and method
counts to Performance Counter instances every time a Web Method is invoked.
This has been working stably for some years.
Recently one one server or another we have noticed some exceptions coming
out of this assembly:
System.InvalidOperationException: Custom counters file view is out of memory.

ClickOnce deployment to Vista 64 bit problems
Hello Folks,
Has anyone had any experience deploying to Vista 64 bit OS using ClickOnce?
We are having problems with two development machines where Visual Studio
2008 is already installed.
The application in question has Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio
(x86,x64) selected as a prerequisite. The machines in question have Crystal
Reports Basic for Visual Studio (x64) installed and working OK.
The first problem we encounter is that ClickOnce does not recognise the
existing installation and attempts to install the Crystal Reports Basic
runtime again. Then to make matters worse the installation fails with this
message"
Component Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio 2008 (x86, x64) has failed
to install with the following error message:
"Fatal error during installation.
The following components failed to install:
- Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio 2008 (x86, x64)
See the setup log file located at
'C:\Users\martinh\AppData\Local\Temp\VSDB500.tmp\install.log' for more
information.
There is a whole lot of stuff in the install.log but it ends with these
lines:

Now all this happens even if the publishing machine and the ClickOnce
deployment machines are the same. It looks to me like a permissions problem
but how can this be? I actually have administrator privileges in this
domain. Can anyone point me in the right direction on this one?

Funky Build Shows No Errors When Compiling
Something got funky with my build.
I had been happily developing my web site when all of a sudden F6 (or
rebuild solution) decided it was not going to compile my .aspx.cs nor
ascx.cs code and thus I do not get error messages until I try to open
page in browser.
Could someone walk me through how I get this functionality back. In
property pages I have "Build Web site as part of soution" checked but
does not seem to do anything. Sometimes if I right click on the web
site project and select "Build web site" the first time i will get no
errors in the error list and the second time I will get errors.
This behaviour seemed to rear its ugly head rather unexpectedly. Not
sure what I toggled, if anything, that invoked this (ahem) feature.
Needless to say I am having another one of those Microsoft moments of
which I am sure Bill Gates has needed to hire himself an army of
psychic defense artists to repel the curses sent to him daily.

I am curious. When looking at the XML comments provided by .NET 2.0.
What is the difference between a single and double back tick? MS

states;
For generic types, the name of the type will be followed by a back
tick and then a number that indicates the number of generic type
parameters. But they fail to mention the double back tick.

How do i get the line number of the calling method in debug-mode.
This is what i do:

This method gets the callers function name, but i don't know how to get the
line number.
Is it possible to get the same line number as shown in Visual Studio ??

Dot net 3.5 compatibility issues with 2.0

Can someone help?
We have visual studio 2008, and our coding team have been coding new
features on our older infrastructure.
Currently it runs dotnet framework 2.0 and we are having issues when
running this or uploading any new developments.
Is there any way of selecting what framework your code is?
Can anyone help/point me in the right or suggest the best way for us
to ensure no distribution to our live system please?

assembly always gets built optimized
Hi Robert,
I recently came across the same problem. I am not able to debug parts of the code when I attach my visual studio debugger to an already launched process.
Did you find a way to get across it ? Do I need to modify the build settings for the particular assembly to solve the problem ?

I did not mention an important detail (since I didn't think that it
matters). I attach to the process that references my assembly after
the process is started. When I do not attach visual studio to the
process but instead start the process directly from vs by hitting F5 I
infact am able to debug. Also note that the probelm with "Cannot
evaluate expression because the code of the current method is
optimized." only happens with the one project. The sourcecode of all
other projects in the same solution can be debugged just fine no
matter if I attach later or start the process with F5.
What does this hint? How could I narrow the source of this evil down?
Does it have to do something with the visual studio hosting process
(wich only is used when starting the process with F5) ? Or could it
have to do with the working folder or the loaded symbols?

click once command line parameters how to ?
I want to pass parameters to a click once application run from the windows
scheduler. I have found several references that tell me these applications
are launced using a URL to the deployment manifest using query string
parameter syntax:
http://mydeploymentserver/MyApplicationFolder/MyApplication.application?param1=foo¶m2=bar
2. The question is how can I do that? Is there a way to do this from a .bat
file? Do I need to write an application to send the http request? Is there an
example application somewhere? This seems like something that is common
enough I should not have to write code to get it done. I have found several
examples of how to retrieve this data within my click once applicaton but
none on how to send the request.

ClickOnce exception in IE
Our app uses the following chain of urls:
1. yoursite.com/launch.php?room=00000271 - validates the roomid appends
an appropriate server variable and encrypts and adds a hash and sends on
to #2
2. mysite.com/launch.php decodes the encryption and compares hash for
alteration. Re-encodes and redirects to #3
3. clickonceinstaller.application
All redirects are done with:

header("Pragma: no-cache");

If I open IE and type in the starting link I get the clickonce app with
no problems. If I leave the browser open and do it again (type in the
url) I get:
Cannot continue. The application is improperly formatted.
Details reveal:
the manifest may not be valid or the file could not be opened.
+ There are multiple root elements. Line 1, position 122.
And I notice that I get a HTTP response of 206 instead of 200.
Any ideas?

IsDnsEnabled
We just moved to .NET 2.0, and in trying out
System.Net.NetworkInformation and friends, I find that it always says
IsDnsEnabled=false, even when that connection clearly is using DNS to
resolve names, I can fetch back DNS server addresses, etc. Anyone else
see this? All of the other settings look correct.
I was also *very* disappointed to find that NetworkInformation only
gave read access to network settings. To make changes I have to
continue using that abominable WMI. Which causes me even more grief by
behaving differently on Win2K than on XP. Is there any chance that
there is something for this in 2.0 and I'm just missing it?

SingleInstanceApplication gets SocketException on Vista with .NET
I have a single instance C# application I wrote in VS2005. When I update that
to VS2008, I get a SocketException in the first instance, when the second
tries to run.
I made a very simple test using VB. In VS2005, make a VB win app. In the
project properties, check the "Make single instance application" box. Run the
app in the debugger. Launch a second instance from File Explorer. It will,
correctly, startup briefly then close. The first instance will bring itself
to the forefront. This is good.
When I convert the app to VS2008 and run the app in the debugger, launch a
second instance, the first instance will get a First Chance SockedException
then an IOException (wrapping the SocketEx) in the debug output window.
The exception is handled, but I'm wondering if I need to be doing some
different setup or permissions something.
I'm running this on Vista. I get the exception running normally, running as
administrator and running with UAC off.
When I do this test on XP, I do not get this exception.
Is this something I need to be concerned about in my code?
Is this a bug with the framework/Vista that needs to be reported?

No... I was wondering if an instance of delegate stateful or can it be
reused?
For example you see a lot of (new AsyncCallback (method), param) it i/o
calls. If the delegate itself isn't carrying state, it seems like you could

I created one ASP.Net 2.0 application and deployed that in IIS.
When I tried to access that through IE, it is giving following error.

In .NET there is attribute named ObsoleteAttribute which is derived from
System.Attribute Class. This attribute when applied to a target (class or
method etc.) gives a compiler warning/error. I know we can write our own
attributes by inheriting the System.Attribute but I want to make it give
compiler warning or error when it is applied on the defined attribute
target.

download file from IIS 7.0 using httpwebrequest problem
hello
i made an application that connects to a http server (iis 7.0 on vista) and
downloads/uploads a file using httpwebrequest (.net 2.0).
i have a problem when uloading files. i have write permissions and i think
that all it's set ok. the error i get is 404 file not found. when i make the
upload i set the method property of the request as "PUT". with the same code
on an XP machine it works.
has anyone any idea about how to set my iis 7.0 website to accept that file?
and why the message is file not found?

CodeBase and Dependent Assemblies
Hi
I have a question or two which I'm pretty sure of the answers, but wanted it
confirmed by those who know more than me!!
Basically we want to share assemblies across many applications and allow for
side by side execution, but for reasons that I donâ??t quite agree with the GAC
is ruled out! These applications are essentially scheduled tasks hence using
the GAC means deploying to many boxes.
So that leaves me with adding a CodeBase element for each dependent
assembly. This works fine except when the referenced assembly also depends
on another assembly in the CodeBase directory, in this case the application
fails with a FileNotFoundException.
Using FusLogVw it's clear that the CodeBase is not used when probing for
this dependent assembly that is not directly referenced by the application.
If I add another dependentAssembly element for this assembly then all is good.
So at last I get to my questions:
When loading an assembly via a CodeBase why doesn't Fusion use the CodeBase
to find any of its dependent assemblies?
Other than the GAC is there an alternative?

We want to 'secure' the touchscreen from each other, and we set each of them
in a VLAN.
Now we have security cameras and intercom (on other VLAN) and we need to
share them across the appartment, for that we have a firewall whic does
routing as well.
Also I'm new to this company and I don't really understand very well how all
of this work.
Currently it's all TclTk and Linux.
We are going (thanks to my evangelism) to .NET/WPF (and probably Windows
Server as well).
Now I wonder about:
1. how do I write a program on the intercom machine which access the flat?
(they are on different VLAN and there is some tagging of the network packet
going on as far as I understood)
2. what do you think of that architecture?
it's just that VLAN are mysterious to me and I wonder why not having all the
machines on the same network? Yet I'm sure with a bit of explanation it will
all become clear,any MS link on the topic? andadvice about the config?
3. Also does Windows server could act as a router for this kind of

System.Diagnostics.Process.CloseMainWindow(), WM_CLOSE, SC_CLOSE
My application runs minimized from a system tray and when
CloseMainWindow() is invoked the application does not get the close
request. When the applications displays a dialog box then
CloseMainWindow() works fine. In general this is not good since I can
not predict/force the application out of the system tray.
System.Diagnostics.Process.CloseMainWindow() is essentially a Native
Win32 SendMessage/PostMessage with WM_CLOSE
On the other hand if I use unmanaged code to call SendMessage with
SC_CLOSE, my application running minimized in the system tray gets the
request and closes gracefully.
My question what piece of the .NET framework will send SC_CLOSE?

Windows Service & System.Timers.Timer production issue...
I'm looking into a production issue related to a windows service and
System.Timers.Timer. The background is the windows service uses a
System.Timers.Timer to periodically poll a directory location on a
network for files and then copies these files to another location (on
the network) AND then updates a record in the database. The file
copying is performed before the database update because the file
system is not transactional.
The code C# .Net (2.0) has the required try/catch/finally to capture
any exception that might be generated during the Timer Elapsed event -
any errors that are generated are logged. I also know about the issue
relating to System.Timers.Timer swallowing unhandled exceptions. The
code also logic (locks) to prevent to Timer Elapsed event being
processed at the same time, the files are processed in a synchronous
manner.
The issue that is arising is intermittently files are being copied BUT
the database record is not being updated as expected AND there is no
error message in our logs. As I said this is an intermittent fault
that I can't reproduce on the development server even when I chuck a
large number of files (large file size as well) at it.
I want to know has anyone had any similar experiences.
Next step is to investigate the hardware & software configuration of
the production server.

true, but it didn't help much.

I want to copy a DateTime value to/from an byte[] array. However, when I try
to get the size of DateTime by using sizeof(DateTime), the compiler complains:
'System.DateTime' does not have a predefined size, therefore sizeof can only

Why I cannot get the size just like other integer values? How do I convert a

We are having a lot of problems trying to print a PDF file in the background
using a C# application that is executed via SQL Server Agent. The output
should be printed to a local printer (HP Color LaserJet 1600) connected via a
USB port.

Weâ??ve tried just about every combination of the process objects properties
trying to get the PDF file to print. But, it never works. The code executes
without error, just nothing ever shows up on the printer.
More infoâ?¦ Weâ??re executing our custom C# application via a SQL Server Agent
job. SQL Server Agent is running as Local System account. The Job Step Type
is Operating System (CmdExec), with Run as set to SQL Server Agent Account.
The command is simply the path and file name of our custom C# application
(e.g., C:\Temp\PrintPDF.exe).
Again, we get no errors/exception and no job failures, but the PDF never
gets printed.
How can we re-code or fix our situation?
What can be done/tried?

OLE call STAThreadAttribute exeception on
I was having the same issue and found on another post that this was not an issue when run in release mode - only in debug mode. That got me to thinking... so I went out in the bin file and deleted all files in the Debug and Release directory, did a clean and rebuild. After that, set to run in debug mode and ran just the way I expected - no errors and savedialog poped up without a hitch.

I'm using Windows XP/SP2 C#2005 / .NET 2.0
I'm trying to access (read and possibly write) the information in media
files (mp3 and wma) using C#. I noticed that if I browse to the â??My Musicâ??
folder using the windows explorer the folder properties can be set to â??Best
For Music Filesâ?? and the explorer than displays artist name and so on. Is it
possible to access this feature of getting the media file information with
C#? I imagine something like accessing the file using FileInfo, declaring it

Binding a generic List to GridView
Hi there,
sorry for crossposting, it's getting late in the evening here in Europe :-(
I have a little problem binding a generic list to a GridView. The List gets
filled
with data from textboxes (via properties in class Person, see below) and I
want the grid to show each new set of textbox strings to show up as a new
row in the grid. i mahaged to do this by definig a little sessionmanagement
but the really problem now is that each time I post the strings to the
server, the previus set of data/strings in my grid (and also in the List)
gets overritten with the last input of strings. In the end i get thre or
four or more rows in my dataset with the strings of the textbox input.
Any idea about this?
