    - Loading Assemblies from several directories. I've the following scenario, an application needs to load several users assemblies to a seperate appdomain, load it's own code (which reference to a 3rd party dll) and then execute its code, which will use the users' dll. I've been unable to make this work. The directory structure is something like: c:\mine\main.exe c:\mine\my_app_domain_code.dll C:\mine\3rd_part_library.dll C:\user\library.dll c:\user\referenced_library.dll I tried playing with the AppDomain's ApplicationBase, PrivateBinPath, etc. But it doesn't seem to solve what I need. I /can/ get all those assemblies to run if I use Assembly.LoadFrom(), but I want to use Assembly.Load(). The reason for that is that I need to resolve referenced assemblies which Assembly.LoadFrom() does not allow. And the 3rd party library uses code like this: Type.GetType("user type"); When I'm tyring to load the assebmlies with Assembly.LoadFrom(), that fails. Any ideas what I can do?     - Using reflection to get the class name from a virtual method in an abstract class I have an abstract class, call it A, with a virtual function from which I want to handle the default functionality of that method. However, that method needs the class name of the runtime type of the subclass. public abstract class A { public virtual string B { get { string s = somefunction(); s += {Virtual class name here}; return s; } } } Therefore, if I have a class C that extends A, I want to be able to call B on an instance of C and get the value of somefunction() + "C" (without implementing the B property and deferring to the abstract virtual property).     - Retrieving account starting service Iâ??m trying to write an application to enumerate all the services running on all of the servers in the company I work for. Iâ??ve got it working except that I have not been able find how to pull the account that starts the service. This is important because once I know this info for all the servers, I have to write an app that will periodically change the passwords used by the accounts starting these services. I donâ??t want to logon to all of these servers individually to do this. Iâ??ve been able to get the information from many of the servers by pulling the info from the registry, but many of the servers have remote registry disabled.     - CDO.Message object error I am not sure if this is the best group for this problem, but here goes. I have a Windows application that has been running fine on about 40 machines for over a year. It uses behind the scene emails (borrowing System.Web.Mail to do so) to notify people of the need to do their part of the process. The application was just installed on a WinXP system and the behind the scene emails fail to send. The system is up to-date on all Windows patches. It gets an error to the effect: System.Web.HttpException: could not access 'CDO.Message' object. --> System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation, --> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040213): The transport failed to connect to the server.     - HttpWebRequest and pipelining The httpWebRequest class supposedly supports HTTP 1.1 pipelining. I wasn't able to figure out how to send multiple GET requests pipelined together. All I could do was set one URI, and do GetResponse, or BeginGetResponse, which would fire off a request for just that one URI. I need it to pipeline multiple GETs over the same connection, to test whether our Web server properly responds to pipelined requests.     - Dynamic Event Binding & Interfaces (Complex Questions) Hello, I'm building up a new application framework that consists of multiple components that communicate through events. These components publish their events as they do work and consume events through what I'm calling the Event Service Controller (ESC). The purpose of the ESC is to receive events from the individual components and then publish events through multicast to each component that has subscribed to the events it is interested in. You might think of this as a traffic control system in that all communication goes to the ESC and then it is broadcast again. All of these components, and the ESC use a set of interfaces that define what events they publish. The problem that I'm running into is that when the ESC starts a component, how can it determine which interface(s) that component is using to publish events? I have many different components that (obviously) do not need to know anything about other components and I want all communication (through events) to go through the ESC to facilitate an elegant design. For example, I might later code a component to log specific events received by the ESC, regardless of where they came from and whatnot. The crux of the problem is that a specific component may raise only a few events defined in its interface, of which the ESC has a reference to, but the ESC has no way of knowing at runtime which interface(s) that component is going to use and therefore I cannot figure out a way to bind the event handlers in the ESC to the component. Ideas? I appreciate any help you can provide... I know that I can use reflection to get the publically exposed events from the components but that still leaves me trying to figure out the logic to bind those events to the corresponding handlers in the ESC.     - Missing Method Exception (REALLY Weird!!!) PLEASE HELP I created a scripting engine that accepts source code, source language, and various other properties that specify imports, references, and such. Then, I created a ScriptPanel that allows editing of all this data, with a drop down for the language, list boxes for the imports and references, and a highlighting textbox for the script itself. Next, I inherit from the scripting engine to create custom scripts. These custom scripts contain properties such as RequiredMethodName, RequiredMethodParameters, and RequiredMethodReturnValue to clarify how they should be written, so that consumers of the custom script know what and how to call into the script. Likewise, the ScriptPanel contains these same properties such that the panel can be assigned the values from the custom scripts. In this way, the panel can test whether the requirements are met in the edited script. Seems logical, right? Well, the properties on the custom scripts and on the ScriptPanel are like so: Public Property RequiredMethodName() As String Public Property RequiredMethodParameters() As System.Type() Public Property RequiredMethodReturnValue() As System.Type Notice that the types of these properties are "System.Type" and an array of "System.Type". However, this is apparently not allowed, though I can find no documentation that says so. Whenever I compile, I get no errors. Even the background compiler does not give me any squigglies, and IntelliSense shows the correct property signatures. However, whenever I actually run the application, whether in debug mode or by launching the compiled EXE, I get the following error: System.MissingMethodException: Method not found: Void ScriptPanel.set_RequiredMethodParameters(System.Type[]) Well, that doesn't make any sense! The property is right there. How can it not be found? In the code editor, even when I right-click and select Goto Definition while on that property, it takes me right there to the code or to the Object Browser, depending on how I reference the project containing the ScriptPanel (I've tried it both ways). So, I thought, maybe it doesn't like properties of type System.Type or arrays of System.Type. (I also tried just with the single System.Type, commenting out the array, and I get the same error, albeit with a different method name.) So, I changed the properties to pairs of Set/Get functions like so: Public Function GetRequiredMethodParameters() As System.Type() Public Sub SetRequiredMethodParameters(ByVal parameters As System.Type()) Again, I get the following error: System.MissingMethodException: Method not found: Void ScriptPanel.SetRequiredMethodParameters(System.Type[]) WHAT??!! I just created that function. There it is right there! What gives? Can you just not pass System.Types around? That would be very strange if so, and no where can I find that this practice is not allowed. And if it is not allowed, I am totally screwed because I need to pass types around. Passing strings around might work, but then developers and script writers are going to have to fully qualify everything all the time. Not gonna happen. :) I have changed properties to functions, the names of the functions, putting the ScriptPanel in another namespace, the names of parameters, everything. The only thing that fixes this issue is removing System.Type and arrays of System.Type. Even when I look at the DLL with ILDASM, it shows the properties or functions as being there. Yet, at runtime, it cannot find them. Can someone please explain this to me? There seems to be something really wrong here and it is driving me bonkers.     - fill DataSet using OleDbDataAdapter from Access field format is lost I have an Access database that has an input mask on a field, !\(999") "000\-0000;0;_ , that formats a phone number. When I fill a DataSet using an OldDbDataAdapter some of the records lose the formatting. For example: Sam Jones (999) 555-1212 *this is good* Joe Smith 9995551212 *this is bad* Why would some records lose the formatting?     - Split - not like perl? Hello, I am trying to use string.split to break up a string into fields. It seems as though, when using space as a delimiter, the method fails to perform as desired when more than one space delimits two fields. Am I interpreting this correctly? In perl, the following string: "this that and the other thing" would split into 6 elements. The .NET makes a fields for each space? Is there a way to handle this (other than regular expressions?) I've been working a bit with the HttpWebRequest class and one requirement I've gotten recently is the desire to set the HTTP Host: header separately from the specific machine referenced in the url. For example, the url http://frontend1.east.company.com but passing Host: www.company.com to emulate a call to the general front door. I look in the HttpWebRequest documentation on MSDN, and under the Headers property, it says specifically that the Host header's derived from the url (implying that it can't be overridden).     - Collection Class Design Question (Compound Key) Hello, I have a class that inherits from the CollectionBase class that contains records from a table in database that has a compound key. Items Table Company_ID [PK, int] Item_ID [PK, int] Description [varchar(50)] Does anyone have any suggestions on how to implement a property, similar to Item(index as Integer), that accepts the compound keys? Desired Property Item(company_id As Integer, item_id as Integer) As CompanyItem Currently if the table has only a primary key, I create a hashtable to store the primary key and the index of the object. Since the service is opening the application, the view of the application is not available. Is it possible to have the application that is opened by this service user to show on a different screen, such as console or even better, a remote desktop session?     - Trying to load a .NET dll I am experiencing the following problem. I have a c++.NET dll in some directory. Let's call it ABC.dll. Now, I try to create a c# project and add this dll to it. So I add it as a reference. The project builds. When I run it, however, I get a FileNotFound exception. File or assembly name ABC (mind you without the .dll), or one of its dependencies, was not found.     - Socket Class Slower Then HTTP Web Request I developed an application that automates dwonloading of a web page hundreds of times. I first developed it by using http web request, but then I read up that HTTP Web Request has some overhead that I thought I could eliminate if I re-wrote it with sockets. However, what I have found is that sockets actually works significantly slower (I get about 1/2 to 2/3 of the performance I get with HTTPWebRequest). Now, the web server sends a close command on every request so even if I post a Keep-Alive request I have to create and open a new socket for every request, but I assume the HTTPRequest class must do the same thing under the covers. Below is my Socket Send Method (very basic). I have a task in hand, whose scenario is as follows. i have a window application, using a button on which (say 'upload' or 'download') i need to connect to internet and then open my abcd.aspx page to process the text file passed.. For example, if=20 a user presses 'A', the underlying form should receive=20 a 'B'. My first idea was to use an IMessageFolter and=20 change the value of the WParam of the incoming message.=20 Since it is declared as a ref parameter, I was hoping=20 that it might work. Id does not. The code runs and the=20 value is changed, but the form still receives the=20 original message. None of which worked for me. I am using Version 2003 of Visual Studio .NET. SOLUTION: You can't name your Dataset the same as your table name that will be in the dataset or you will get this error.     - Cross AppDomain Communication, Scripting Howdy All, I am having difficulty with two-way communication across AppDomains in an attempt to dynamically script applications. Everything works as expected, except when using ByRef parameters. The below explanation is lengthy, but well worth the read. If you can help me, I'd gladly share this code which has greatly helped my development of extensible applications. I have developed an easy to use scripting engine for .NET that handles loading and unloading of a secondary AppDomain automatically. I call the object "SafeScriptingEngine", and it has properties for the source language, source code, and any needed references and imports. When its compile method is called, the code is compiled by the appropriate compiler, then it creates a new AppDomain, loads the compiled code into the AppDomain, and uses a Class Factory approach to return a well-known interface. This simple interface contains two functions called "MethodExists", which accepts a function name and a list of parameters then return a Boolean of whether the function exists, and "CallMethod", which again accepts a function name and a list of parameters then actually calls the function. There are no memory leaks, and all compilers, AppDomains, and assemblies are unloaded as desired and expected. In fact, I designed the engine to be inheritable such that functions can be created that are strongly typed. As you can see, the default engine expects a non-strongly-typed array of Objects. To prove the usability of the engine, I created a "SimpleStringScript" which inherits from the "SafeScriptEngine". The "SimpleStringScript" accepts only the part of code that does the manipulation, such as "s.ToUpper" in the example above. In the background, it adds function, parameters, and Return statement. Also, with the "SimpleStringScript", there is no need for "MethodExists" that accepts parameters. Instead, it has a "StringMethodExists" function that accepts no parameters, which then calls "MethodExists" on the base "SimpleStringScript" with a String Object as the parameter. Likewise, there is no need to call "CallMethod" with a function name and Object array. Instead, it has a "CallStringMethod" function that take a String as a parameter, which in turn calls the base "CallMethod" with the appropriate function name and the String parameter encased in an Object array. Public Class SimpleStringScript Inherits SafeScriptingEngine Public Function CallStringScript(ByVal s As String) As String Public Function StringMethodExists() As Boolean ... End Class Again, all of this works great, just as desired and expected. The problem arises when you create a script that uses ByRef parameters. I would like a function that looks like: Public Sub MyCustomFunction(ByRef e as MyEventArgs) e.MyObject.MyProperty = "some value" End Sub I quickly discovered that any parameter being passed into another AppDomain must be Serializable, as do any objects that are referenced in its hierarchy. Otherwise, it will throw a SerializationException when you try to pass in the parameter. So, I changed all objects that are referenced in the EventArgs to be Serializable, and that solved the problem when calling. However, upon return to the calling AppDomain, the objects and values in "e" are still the same as before the call. None of the manipulations taking place in the script from the secondary AppDomain are carried back to the calling AppDomain. I figure this is because, as expected with the Serializable objects, the "e" is being serialized, sent across the AppDomain boundary, then deserialized. When it is deserialized, an entirely new object is created. Changes made are not sent back across the boundary simply by using ByRef arguments. Unfortunately, I'm not sure exactly how to solve this problem. I think I should be sending an Interface as my argument, rather than an object of MyEventArgs. As long as the Interface is well-known in both AppDomains, I think the scripting AppDomain should know what to call, and when it does, the call should be marshaled back to the primary AppDomain via the Interface. Basically, the Interface is just a pointer back to the actual object. Can anyone confirm this to be True or False? If False, please HELP! If True, then is it possible to simply wrap the MyEventArgs object into an Interface, such as "IMyEventArgs", then change the scripted function to accept the Interface rather than the object, then pass an Interface rather than an object into the method? Would that suffice, so long as both AppDomains are aware of the Interface and anything it references? Obviously, if the Interface referenced a type that is not loaded in the secondary AppDomain, then there would be problems because the script would not know how to use it. Or, do I have to wrap the EventArgs into an Interface, as well as wrap every object that it references into an Interface. Meaning, again using the example above, would I also need to create an "IMyObject" Interface? My workaround for the time being is to return the object being manipulated as the return value, that way, the new object (created from deserialization) is again serialized upon return. However, this requires the scripter to know that they need to return it. Using C#, that is no big deal because the compiler will tell you when there is nothing returned. However, in Visual Basic, if you fail to supply a return value, you simply get Nothing. But, since I will be writing the scripts, I'll deal with the workaround for now. But, I sure would like ByRef to work across AppDomains. Any suggestions?     - httpwebrequest when RSA/ACE securid server is involved Hello, I have an assembly, written in C#. The assembly runs under IE (6.0 SP1). IE accesses a web site on which a reverse proxy with an RSA/ACE secureid is installed. When this happens an authentication process takes place and after its completion, the web request goes through and completes successfuly. Naturally, any further http requests to the same site will not have to re-authenticat. However, my C# assembly runs under IE and tries to invoke an http request via the standard httpwebrequest class. I am setting HttpWebRequest.Credentials = CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials still, it does not help. Any idea what I am missing here?     - Combobox text not in list strange behaviour Here is a weird one. I have a combobox that accepts and displays values that are not in the list. However if I do a droppedDown = true in the onEnter event handler and then tab to another combobox, the text value is reset to null/empty string. My solution at this point is to separate the two comboboxes with a textbox so that doesn't happen. (Note that it also resets to null if i step through through the droppeddown = true statement.) If anyone has seen this or heard of fix for it, please let me know. Specifically, when you call GetResponse() it throws a WebException, to quote the msdn page, Abort was previously called. -or- The time-out period for the request expired. -or- An error occurred while processing the request. The last item is the part I find quizzical. "An error occurred while processing the request" appears to cover any non-200 return status while ignoring that, say, a 404 or a 500 status *can* have a payload that is of interest. A custom error page, or a 500-page might have information about what went wrong. Is there any way to get ahold of the payload when the return status is not 200?
