 - Threading question Ok, I'm trying to learn how to use threading, but I've run into a problem. I'm doing this in VB.Net. I started out making something pretty simple. Just a sort of wrapper for cmd.exe. I used separate threads to read from stdin and stderr. It seemed to be working ok. Then I added macros to it. Here's what's happening. The sub that runs the commands gets called several times in a row very quickly. It's spawns a new cmd.exe process each time, and a couple of threads to listen for the output. The problem is that the commands can take different amounts of time to finish, so the output I get is all out of order. I need to make sure that the commands run one at a time, each one waiting until the previous one is done. How exactly can I do that?  - System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException error merging dataset Hi All We are getting an error with an application we are writing. What happens is that when a dataset is being merged an exception is being thrown which reads System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Load factor needs to be between 0.1 and 1 This hasn't been an issue until a day or so ago when we did our latest build. The dataset has not changed significantly recently, it does have a reasonable number of tables although we can get the issue when there is very little in the various tables.  - How can I disable Net Framework >>without<< uninstalling it? I have the Service Pack installed, but this program is just plain buggy. I don't even WANT it, but I couldn't get my ATI drivers to install unless I had it on the system. I don't mind if the files just sit there; I just don't want them RUNNING. Not once have I been able to shut down my computer without having to suffer a 2 minute wait while "NET FRAMEWORK is not responding." I have Windows 2000 Professional and am about to commence a reinstall with new HDD's, so I want to see this modification in action BEFORE I do the new install, just to see how it's affecting my video (if at all).  - sorting a string collection Hi, Can anybody please tell me if it is possible to sort a string collection into alphabetical order (or indeed sort in any order at all).  - How to uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Hi. I have Windows 2003 Server running critical application. After installation .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 my application stopped working. I know exactly that problem is in SP1. I test it on my test server without SP1 and after installation of SP1. How can I uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 from Windows 2003 server? Itâ??s easy on XP and Server 2000. I just uninstalled .NET Framework 1.1 and installed it back.  - ClickOnce on FireFox I tried publishing an application using ClickOnce in VS2005 Beta 2. I am able to run it fine from IE 6, but not FireFox. The App Launcher appears to start, but I get the error "Unable to retrieve application. Files missing in deployment". MSDN indicates this could be server-related, but since it works fine on IE6, I assume this is an issue with FireFox.  - Is there a way to check for "exclusive" access to a file? Hi, I have an application that watches a directory using FileSystemWatcher. When a specific type of files comes over, I want to parse it and then move it. However, these files can be somewhat large, and the FTP process isn't complete when I try to access the files. In those instances, an exception is thrown when I try to access the file. Is there a way that I can check to see if the files is ready for reading and moving before I read it? That way I can wait until it's ready instead of having the exception thrown.  - Slow loading of XML in debugger only I have an C++ application that uses MSXML.DLL to load and parse an XML file. When the application starts from the debugger the XML loads/parses VERY slowly. When the application is run stand-alone it runs at normal speed. Note that both cases use debug binaries. What is making XML run so slowly from the debugger? (I don't see any XML specific trace statements generated.) How can I get the debugger XML to run at the non-debugger speed? Any help would be appreciated!  - unable to install SQL Express 2005 CTP Hi, Am trying to install SQL Server Express CTP on my machine (Windows XP with SP1). I have downloaded the windows installer and .net framewrok specified in the readme file(ReadmeSQLEXP2005.htm) and also followed the steps given. but could not install express. I tried installing both June and april edition. When I tried to install april edition the below error window is popped up when the setup is in progress during configuring "SQL Server Database Services", But am logged in windows domain with admin rights and also I tried running setting through a local admin user (not logged to win domain) but still facing the same error. "Please user an admin account when installing on XP SP1 Systems. Setup cannot proceed with non-admin accounts on XP SP1 systems. Refer to the product documentation for more information" When I tried to install june edition the following error was shown before any install window popped. I used the uninstall wizard and removed .net framework and again installed framework (tried with different version of 2.0 framework like *64,*86, IA64) "SQL Server 2005 CTP Setup has detected incompatible beta components from Visual Studio or SQL Server.  - Dynamically Create Type By Version Our software is interface based meaning that we don't add any references to implemntation assemblies. All loading is done via Activator.CreateInstance(assembly, class name). Our components that we are instancing are loaded in the GAC. In preparing for a version change in our software we are wondering how we would be able to instance a particular version of a component. Say I know the class name and assembly, yet there is a version 1.0.0.0 and a version 2.0.0.0 and I specifically want to load version 1.0.0.0. What can I do to ensure this is the version that I get? There doesn't seem to be an overload for loading a particular version of a component via Activator. I thought I would create the type as well, but I can't fiure out how to specify version.  - ASP.NET DB Access I hope this is the correct forum for this because I'm at wits end. I have a Win 2003 server, SQL server 2000 and the .Net framework sdk installed. The ASP.NET VB Quickstart tutorials have web form examples some of which connect to the database. They do not work and I get 'server does not exist or access denied' when I try to run any of the database examples. If I revert back to asp and write a simple asp program that does an ADODB connections and select, it works just fine. Anybody help me on this? Is there an in which these are supposed to be installed?  - GDI+ and World transformations Hello: I need to draw some graphics in a control, and I want the Y-axis to grow form down to top. The matrix I'm using is a combination of translation, scaling and translation, But when I try to combine with a reflection in the Y-axis, the transformation get "sheared", and the graphics deformed.  - Need advice how to approach project? Hello All! I'm getting ready to build an application in vb.net. It's a game the will will have a countdown clock, keep track of points and user inputs. One game that will be played by the same people. It will be hooked up on a private network, possible up to 100 workstations, connected to a SQL server for the database, and another server that will control when to start games, stop games, start and stop the timeclock, etc. So my question is, what would be the best way to build this. Should I use asp.net and treat as a web application, or would I use web services?  - Killing background thread when in blocking call Hi: I have a class that needs to request/receive updates from a server over a network connection for the entire life of the application. I use a background worker thread to do this, and then send updates to the main thread using events. This works great. My issue is that when a user wants to terminate the application, the thread could be (will be) in any number of blocking calls, for example BinaryReader.ReadByte. Almost all of what my background thread does is pull data from the server via a TcpClient > Stream > BinaryReader. I've done lots of reading on the topic, and everyone seems to say that I sould use a ManualResetEvent and have the thread check periodically that this event hasn't been Set. I do this now. The problem is that even though I check to see if the event has been set, the next line of code will start a blocking read. I don't want to use Thread.Abort, and I don't want to switch to non-blocking calls on the socket. What am I missing? Thanks. Dave P.S. Why not use a bool instead of a ManualResetEvent?  - Printing a Document I'm using the PrintPageEventArgs with the Graphics namespace, and when the code gets to the point where it sets HasMorePages to true, it loops in a while loop to being the new page. The problem is that all of the next page still prints on the first page. I can't figure out why this is.  - Some img tages being stripped out in ASP.NET 2.0 I've just started using this new version. I have created a simple site which make use of the MasterPage concept as well. It works fine on the development machine. On the host site some of the img tags have been stripped out. There are some generated by an AdRotator component and some normal html img tags which when viewing the source of the page in the browser are completely missing.  - problem with unhandled exception in Windows application Hi Everybody, I'e got a problem with one of my Windows applications: Some times (not very often) the application displays a message box that says "Application has generated an exception that could not be handled". The only information provided is the process&thread ID. It does NOT provide a stack dump or any other information about what or where this error is (the log in the system event viewer does not give any more information) The application catchs unhandled exceptions and writes the exception info to a log file (I tried, it Works!) but in this case no log file was created. the only options the message box gives me are to stop the application or to run a debugger. Now, this application runs on a client's producation computer so I don't have any debugger on it. How can I find out what caused this exception?  - Unrelated TCP sockets affected! Hi All, I realize this is a very peculiar situation, and I was sceptical about this "finding" also, but after days of debugging, this is what things have narrowed down to: I have an app (originaly a Web app, but I am able to replicate the issue in a WinForm app also) that calls on a 3rd party DLL through PInvoke. The library connects to a remote 3rd party server thorough TCP/IP to perform some EDI data processing. We started noticing that every one of these TCP connections remain in the "CLOSE_WAIT" state until the process is shut down. At first, we assumed it's a problem with the 3rd party ilibrary. However, after further investigation, we found that this only happens if we connect to a SQL server first! To clarify, if we use the 3rd party library without ever connecting to the SQL server, then the TCP connections close properly in a timely manner. However, once a SqlConnection.Open() call is made (and loaded modules in VS show System.EnterpriseServices.dll, and System.EnterpriseServices.thunk.dll loaded), any subsequent call to the 3rd party DLL starts to hang in the CLOSE-WAIT state indefinitely. I tried to see if turning off the connection pooling would affect this, but it did not. Please note that I do not have to run any commands agains the database for this to occur. As long as I do SqlConnection.Open(), this problem starts! I am beyong confused! I know this 3rd party DLL is written in VC++. I have a unsubstiated theory that perhaps perhaps the SQL DLL and this 3rd party DLL have the same base address, and the 3rd party DLL gets rebased by he OS loader, and thus cannot be unloaded, causing the bug to appear.
