    - 3rd attempt: UDP Socket Bug Using udp sockets inside a class called by ASP.NET By impersonating you can use a TCP socket from a external class and call it from a ASP.NET page. However, changing the socket type to UDP and binding it to a port throws an error "An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions". I tried all the methods I knew of to get this to work such as... ASPNET added the account to the local administrators ASPNET act as part of the os inside local policy <identity impersonate="true" userName="administrator" password="*****" /> inside the web.config file. System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent.Impersonate inside code I have seen (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;195445) Environment: W2K Advanced Server SP4 IIS 5 VS.NET 1.0 This leaves me at a loss on how to get my class to run from a ASP.NET page.     - "JIT" complete application? Hello, I'm currently wondering if it is possible to JIT a complete application at start-up. The problem is that I have a very time-critical application, which should be able to shoot out of the halter, and this from the first shot on. I know that there is the possibility to use NGen. However, in several posts I read about the trade-offs like less optimized code. Since start-up time is not critical, my idea was to look for a way to tell the JIT compiler to compile EVERYTHING at once in contrast to method-by-method JITting during runtime. Anybody any ideas?     - framework 1.1 instal failure I have a site using nt4.0 sp6a with framework 1.0 installed and running .net applications OK. Have just tried to update to framework 1.1 and receive the following error right at the end of the installation. Regsvc.exe Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.     - system.ArithmeticException My OS was hit with a virus not too long ago and we had to use the recovery disk to start all over. I installed VS .NET 2003 -the same version that was on my system before and worked fine - and now I get the same error every time I try to run any created application, including the samples that come with VS .NET. It compiles and builds just fine, with no errors or warnings, but gets the System.ArithmeticException in System.Drawing.dll error when I try to run the application. I have done the windows upgrade and even tried uninstalling, then reinstalling VS .NET, but no luck. The debugger always pin-points the problem to a "forms.controls()" statement in the automatically generated initialization code, but I don't know what to do about it. It even does it when I try to run a blank form with no additional code. I recently tried it with a clean boot that I read on the Microsoft Support page, but couldn't determine if it still had the problem, because I got a different error, saying that the debugger could not be initialized.     - Work with Dataset Prior to Displaying I am querying a SQL database and then creating a dataset and binding that to the datagrid. Is their any way prior to binding I can work with the data in the dataset? What I am trying to do is run some logic on the data prior to binding it to the datagrid. For example: I am checking for a certain value in two fields if I find the value in one field I would like to display that date in a column if not I would like to display the other date in the same column. Hi all according to a lot articles that I read about .NET assemblies, I understand that an assembly file always contains a manifest but it is not required for a non-assembly module or it should not contain a manifest. In a multi-file assembly scenario, I created a module using the C# compiler as follow: csc /out:MyModule.mod /t:module MyModule.cs then I created an assembly that includes this module by doing this: csc /out:MyAsm.dll /t:library /addmodule:MyModule.mod MyAsm.cs After I use ILDASM to view their metadata information, nothing unusual for the assembly file: MyAsm.dll, it comes with the usual manifest and types metadata and ILs. But when I open MyModule.mod using ILDASM, there is also a manifest associated with the non-assembly module. The only way i've found to alleviate the "problem" is to declare a string constant and hope that the two will always be the same... most likely... but not 100% guaranteed. Since you can only use value types in attributes anyways, couldnt the compiler invoke a integer.tostring() itself in the context of the constructor?     - File Upload sometimes does not work Hi, I am using a multipart form with a HTML INPUT control and a HtmlInputFile class on the server side. Unfortunately the file upload does not work on the destination server. The Value property is empty as if no file was specified on the client side. I tested on three servers so far: 1. Win2k3, .NET Framework 1.1 - OK 2. Win2k, .NET Framework 1.1 (MSVC 7.1 installed) - OK 3. Win2k, .NET Framework 1.0 - FAILED The application is compiled on machine 2 and uses the redirect entries in the web.config file to operate with the 1.0 framework. The main entry function CreateAssemblyCache is implemented in fusion.dll. But how do I find the correct version of fusion.dll at runtime? After installing the preview of .NET 1.2 (Whidbey) you have to use the version of fusion.dll that ships with Whidbey. Otherwise a call to InstallAssembly returns an E_NOINTERFACE. Does anybody know any better method to find the correct version than scanning the subdirectories of C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework and taking the one with the highest version number? Now my question: I've an export from a proprietary old db system, which exports the data in hexadecimal representation. I want to give the hex string as a whole to the method e.g. - HexToString ("3139383530323038") and not - HexToString("\x31\x39\x38\x35\x30\x32\x30\x38") Are there any classes in the .NET framework, which can convert hexadecimal data in the way I would like ? If not, are there any suggestion how to solve my problem in a different way without doing all this decoding on my own ?     - Suggestion for implementing controls based on rules Hi everyone; We have a problem in our compact framework client-server application for which we would require your valuable suggestions. Problem: There are controls in the application user interface that has to be loaded based on rules / transaction codes else they are not displayed at all, hence the controls won't be there at design time but they would have to be created and placed at run time.Hence a elegant and simple solution has to be designed to meet out the requirements. Solution: We are leaning towards getting all valid transaction codes from the database and loading into memory at the start of the application. When a form is created for the first time,the form and all the form controls are created based on the transaction codes.The form is then saved into a form factory. If that form is required again then it is loaded from the form factory. I would appreciate some comments or suggestions to this approach.     - A more functional serialization wtih rdbms's? It appears your only route for using System.Runtime.Serialization and friends with a database is to use a blob field and shove the zeroes and ones in there. This loses half of the reason you're shoving everything into a database to begin with -- sure you can pull out your serialized object, but you're not able to search by properties or group by expressions, etc. Short of rolling your own objects, is there any "more intelligent" method to get serialization, more along the lines of what I get in Java using JDO (http://java.sun.com/products/jdbc/related.html#what_is)? I realize there's a bit of a mixed metaphor going on here (relation databases versus object oriented programming), but I'm not sure there has to be.     - How to get an assembly from a type string Hello all, I am working on coding a custom Formatter to be used to export and restore property settings from objects on a form in an easily edited text format. It's not true serialization and deserialization because I'm not fully describing objects or instantiating them during deserialization (just storing and later setting properties which meet certain Attributes). The serialization works and now I am working on the deserializing portion and am trying to figure out how to obtain a type from a type string so I can read the data back in. The GetType() method only works for types which are included in my assembly or if I explicitly obtain the assembly - otherwise it returns null. For example, my file would contain a line like: "Size System.Drawing.Size {Width=40, Height=25}" which would tell the code that this object's property "Size" of type "System.Drawing.Size" has the value "{Width...}" I need to obtain a type object from "System.Drawing.Size" to properly parse the data of this property. So, is there any way to obtain the assembly of an object derived from system based solely on its string? I don't want a hard-coded solution because it would be preferable if the code would work with future releases of the .NET redistributable and also I don't want to look up the correct dll for each property to make the method more robust. Here is a brief fragment which is as close as I got (gleaned off another website): string assemblyloc = Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("systemroot") + "\\Microsoft.Net\\Framework\\v" + System.Environment.Version.ToString()+ "\\System.Windows.Forms.dll"; assembly.LoadFrom(assemblyloc); This code still has 2 problems: the dll file is hardcoded, and the version string includes an additional field which causes it to generate the incorrect path (my path is: ...\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.0.3705\", but the value returned by System.Environment.Version is 1.0.3705.xxxx - this xxxx field would need to be removed to generate the correct path). Many thanks for any advice, Markus PS - as I type all this in, I came up with a possible solution - which isn't a solution to the problem above, but might work for me... I will probably try to do things from the other end - instead of getting type information from the system which requires me to get its assembly, I could instead get it from my own objects, since their type information is in my assembly. For example, my serialization Formatter might produce the following: "MyNamespace.MyClass 1 #" "Size System.Drawing.Size {Width=1, Height=1}" Where the first line describes the object, 1 indicates the number of property entries for this object, and # represents the object's ID property (used for persistence). I can use reflection on "MyNamespace.MyObject" to get a reference to this object's properties, then use "Size" to obtain a reference to the various parts of its Size property.     - Mail Method Modifying Attachments? I wrote a simple utility for submitting source files to our build folks for patching a pending release. It uses methods from the System.Web.Mail namespace to create an email message, attach a list of source files (by path name), and send it to a list of recipients. While I was away on vacation, someone complained that this utility stripped some '.' characters (dots) out of some source files, specifically changing "this." to "this" in several places. Of course, those sources wouldn't build. My utility doesn't even open the sources, let alone do a search/replace of any kind. It simply uses the library method to add files -- based on their local path names -- to a message that's being prepared. Thus, I can't see that there's any way it could be corrupting those files, and suspect that it's a problem elsewhere in the system. But I don't know what all the System.Web.Mail methods do with attachment files, of course, so there's the very unlikely possibility that some of the library methods I'm using are at fault. Has anyone else using this namespace ever found (or even suspected) that any of its methods could possibly be responsible for removing characters from an attached file? Has anyone else used that namespace to email source files as attachments, and NOT had any dots stripped out of object names? I think we need to look elsewhere for the cause of the problem, but I don't want to give anyone the impression that I'm reluctant to admit that there might actually be a flaw in my own utility. I have spent a great deal of time trying to develop a DLL which will hide away the complexities of linking to one of my web services, and simply return a dataview. I wrote the original version in about an hour, and it worke3d fine. Then I tried to create a version of the same DLL for .Net C/F. To cut a long story short proxy generated when I add my web reference (reference.cs) contains the following code: ...[return: System.Xml.Serialization.XmlElementAttribute ("return", Form=System.Xml.Schema.XmlSchemaForm.Unqualified)]... This is fine for my windows client, the reference to System.Xml points to the Standard framework (1.1.4322). For the compact framework it points to 1.0.5000. The winforms machine connects to the internet via a Windows Authentication proxy server (ISSA or whatever it's called!).     - How to prevent cpu-bound thread locking out UI thread Hi I have an application that has a UI thread and a file-content-searcher thread which asynchronously searches a large (1GB+)file for occurrences of a user-specified string. I start the file-searching thread with a ThreadPriority.Lowest to make sure it does not monopolize the cpu cycles. However, what I see is that screen repaints stop until the file-searcher thread completes (or I put in artificial Sleep calls). I've tried inserting judicious 'Sleep(0)' in the file-searcher thread but to no avail. What am I missing? I created a Web setup project using Visula Studio.Net
2002, .net framework 1.0. I deployed the application on a
Windows 2000 machine with IIS 5.0, .netframework 1.0. The
application setup did not give any errors. However, on
clicking one of the links i get the following
error: "Remote Server returns : (404) Not found". I have
checked for borken links/wrong URL already - there are
none.
