 - Populating a combo using n-Tier datasets All, I would love an answer to this issue... I am trying to populate a combo using DataSets in an n-tier model. I have the function in the form called FillCombo send the SQL paramters to a support DLL. The support DLL in turn calls the data layer to actually retrieve the data from the database. What I need to be able to do is pass the DataSet from the data layer through the support layer to the presentation layer. I am stepping through the code and see the data populate at the data layer. I cannot see if it is getting through from there though. ComboBox1.DataSource = objSupport.FillCtl(sSQL) (returns a dataset) Public Function FillCtl(sSQL...) as Dataset ... ds = objDB.RecordGet(sSQL) FillCtl = ds.copy ... Anyone have any examples or suggestions? I have tried populating the DataSet using a DataAdapter, then using .copy to copy the dataset to the function so it gets returned. This is not working...  - message that .NET is not installed Hi, I have written a Windows Forms application. When someone tries to run it on a machine where .NET is not installed, he sees the message that does not give any idea of what went wrong.  - dll files I have a dll created by MS V C++ version 6 Class. The original files it was based on were Borland and so this dll was created to use the Borland files in a MS environment. However I am trying to access it in a .NET application by adding it as a reference, and it keeps complaining that "a reference to CDFSvrMS.dll could not be added. This is not a valid assembly or com component." I have tried to load up the MS VC++ version 6 project in .NET which seems to automatically convert the project. However when the dll is re-compiled it still does not work! I have also tried to create a new dll from scratch, based on the cpp but it complains "error C2872: 'IServiceProvider' : ambiguous symbol" Any suggestions on how to get my dll working.  - Compilation error with IIS6.0 on Win Server 2003 Hi I have recently configured a server to run on Windows Server 2003. I installed IIS6.0 and used aspnet_regiis.exe to enable aspnet_isapi.dll. When I try to access a static page, I see it perfectly, however, when I try to access any dynamic pages (aspx, asmx...), I get a CS0016, compilation error. It says it could not write to output file c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET Files\WebSiteName\9bc2498f\2a863c34\kag1z89k.dll - - Access is denied When I navigate to the relevant directory, I don't even see the dll that they are referring to.  - Computers File Structure like Windows Explorer Hi I would like to display all the files and folders , drives in tyhe system in a Form using Tree View Controls. The Tree view control should look very similar to Windows Explorer. I have seen 'Folder Browser' class provided by .net, but it shows a a separate dialogue.  - Styles missing after upgrade Today I upgraded from Framework 1.0 to 1.1 and Visual Studio from 7.0 (2002) to 7.1 (2003). Following the upgrade my web site renders HTML with all control style width and height properties missing. Here is a before and after sample of a piece of rendered HTML for a button that has its designer property set to 80px: <input type="submit" name="btnLogin" value="Login" id="btnLogin" style="width:80px;" /> <input type="submit" name="btnLogin" value="Login" id="btnLogin" /> You can see how the style is being omitted, and this behaviour is happening to all controls in all projects on my machine. This weird change in behaviour has totally ruined the appearance of my web site and has killed development stone dead. Does anyone know what's going on? The problem consist if any client disconnect under UDP protocol from server ( code below ) it raise exeption 10054 - It shouldn't be under UDP protocol - becouse this protocol is connectionless and does not have any notification about closing. I have also another win-form application that needs these search results.  - Unable to debug multiple ASP.NET projects simultaneously Hi, I was trying to debug two different ASP.NET projects at the same time. But I was only able to debug one of them and I got the following error for the other one: "Unable to start debugging on the web server. A debugger is already attached." When I further checked the Output window, I noticed another error message: 'Auto-attach to process '[2248] aspnet_wp.exe' on machine 'CSSVR' failed. Error Code 0x80040001 (Invalid advise flags). Does it mean that I cannot debug 2 different ASP.NET application simultaneously or there is some configuration that I need to do? Any help is greatly appreciated.  - Non-blocking socket question The following code behaves differently from what I would expect: socket = new Socket(AddressFamily.InterNetwork, SocketType.Stream, System.Net.Sockets.ProtocolType.Tcp); socket.Blocking = false; socket.Connect(ipe); isConnected = socket.Poll(30*1000000, SelectMode.SelectWrite); I would have expected that once I set the socket to non-blocking, the connect would return immediately and the poll would wait up to 30 seconds for the connect to succeed. Instead, what I see is that after 10 or so seconds, the Connect() throws a SocketException ("A non-blocking socket operation could not be completed immediately").  - Problems using 2002 Assemblies on 2003 Hi all, I'm creating an addin for the .NET IDE, and have the following problem. It's using C#, and is packaged into a installer with the .NET 2002 version. Obviously, this results in the 7.0 version of Microsoft.VisualStudio.VCProjectEngine.dll being packaged. Now, I need the addin to work with both the 2002 & 2003 version of .NET. For people who have both versions installed (which is my case), there's no problem. But people who only have the 2003 version installed, they get the error message: "The located assembly's manifest definition with name 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.VCProjectEngine' does not match the assembly reference". My question is, what would be the cleanest way to resolve this issue? Will my installer have to dynamically change the manifest, package both 7.0 & 7.1 version of the DLL, or ..? Thanks for any help!  - how to locate & load 3rd party private assemblies at run time? I'm writing an add-on to a 3rd party commercial application. This other app has a bunch of private assemblies -- nothing in the GAC, all private -- and to interact with the app I need to use various objects in these assemblies. That's how this other app's SDK works. The problem is, I don't know in advance where the other app is installed. It has a regular setup wizard so the end user can choose an installation directory. My add-on application is to be distributed via the web, not installed and configured by hand. So I can't assume any particular location for the 3rd party app's DLLs, and I am not going to be around to tweak the .config file for my add-on app by hand each time. It needs to handle things dynamically. Else, I get the dreaded System.IO.FileNotFoundException. I can look in the registry and get the installation path for the 3rd party app, and thus find its DLLs. But what do I do next? I've tried loading these assemblies using Assembly.LoadFrom(), but I'm not sure what to do afterwards -- how do I then create objects, call methods etc? I also read some advice saying I should create a new AppDomainSetup and set the ApplicationBase path to be the path to the 3rd party app, but I'm still not clear what to do after that and then I won't be able to load my own app's private assemblies. Seems like this is a common enough problem and there should be an easy solution, but I can't find it. Can anyone tell me the trick? How do you locate, load and USE private assemblies where you do not know their location in advance but can discover them at run time?  - Attribute programming Hy, I understand that attribute programming is used to add metadata to the code, but since they are implemented with a class and we can extend that class, we should be able to do any normal class thing with attributes like: -Have methods -Use any kind of code in the constructor and the methods (ex.  - Starting a new thread in ASP.NET application Hello, Some pages in ASP.NET application perform very process-intensive tasks (parsing large flat files, saving data to SQL Server, etc.. ) Some tasks might take longer to execute than users' expectations. New thread(s) will be started for these process-intensive tasks, so asp.net process can take over and send response to the client's browsers. Does anyone see any issues with this scenario? How can application inform user when thread is completed or failed after response was sent to a browser.  - Remote Development of VB.NET Application Dear all, Can you please provide some information on the following issue, at the earliest. I have a development server setup in the network, say machine X. Also, there is another workstation, say Y, for a programmer, to work with. The application is a Winforms Application and machine X (server) does not have Visual Studio .NET installed on it. Machine Y(workstation) has got Visual Studio .NET installed on it. Y is connected via sourcesafe to the solution in X, without making a local copy( I mean through a network share). There are issues faced by the programmer, in executing the application in X, via Studio environment in Y. Basically application is not doing any database related activities, and throws exceptions and breaks at will. Will this kind of a scenario ever work??? If not, please detail a suitable alternative.  - Return string from Fortran Dll back to C#. Dear all: My C# program need a string returned from a Fortran Dll.  - Should I close a connection in a dispose method? I've built a class to broker the data in may application. In other words, when my business logic needs a list of widgets in the db, it calls mybrokerclass.getWidgetList, which might return a collection or arraylist of widgets. This way, the business logic doesn't care about where the data comes from. (BTW, this is a web application) So my problem is this.. during a postback, a series of operations will occur wherein perhaps three requests to this broker class will take place, all for different sets of data. Rather than opening and closing the connection to the db in each method (three times opened, three times closed in this case), I think it would be better to OPEN the connection in the constructor of the class and then put the CLOSE method in the destructor (dispose). Does this sound like correct thinking or am I screwed up in how I'm approaching this? P.S., since I'm only worried about closing the db connection in this dispose method, I'm assuming I should _not_ call the GC.suppressFinalize method so the GC can clean up anything remaining...?  - ApplicationHost and HttpModule problem I am trying to execute a web page in application host (without IIS) using ApplicationHost, but have a ConfigurationException thrown. I have several HttpModule add directives in Web.config but cannot remove them, it would cripple my application). I wonder if there is any way to get rid of this error?  - Security: securityexception with web parts (SPSv2) Hi All This is one for the experts! I have developed a Web Part (in C#) which should list some entities from Active Directory using System.DirectoryServices, all compile fine - but when trying to execute the Web Part on a Web Part Page I keep getting a "system.security.securityexception". All comes down to the call: DirectoryEntry d = new DirectoryEntry(ldapPath); where ldapPath is any valid LDAP path towards our directory in the format "LDAP://dc=domain,dc=com/cn=users,dc=domain,dc=com" or something similar... I have written tons of code using ADSI and COM and a quick vbs-script to prove I'm hitting the right ldap-objects also evaluates to true. However this DirectoryEntry call destoyes the Web Part page and breaks with the securityexception error. I guess it has something to do with the security levels in the .Net framework, but I don't know where to look. I have tried to assign full trust security to my assembly using the .net 1.1 wizard with no success. Any inputs anyone...? So I create separate application domain, explore the assembly via Reflection in this domain (this results in building a hierarchical data structure containing the information about the types in the assembly) , and unload the domain. The question is what is the best way to pass the data structure from this domain to the default domain where the main work happens?  - Raise event from library worker thread. Hi! I am writing a library in managed C++ for the .NET framework. I have problems fireing events from a worker thread. The managed event must be raised from the main thread, but I cannot find any way to pass control from the worker thread to the main thread. In the COM programming model the problem was solved by creating an invisible window which the worker thread passed win32 messages to. With what is that paradigm replaced in .NET? I have found some solutions that involves the Control.Invoke method. This approach works if you got access to the clients Form handle, but since I am writing a library (and not a control) I don't now how to get that. Instead I get this error message if a I let my class inherit from Control and then call Invoke() "An unhandled exception of type 'System.InvalidOperationException' occurred in system.windows.forms.dll Additional information: Cannot call Invoke or InvokeAsync on a control until the window handle has been created."  - Trust an assembly (not using.net wizards?) Hello all, first of all I'm just a simple system administrator and I have no idea how Framework works - that's why I need your help. Our devoloper team is just in the process of writing a couple of new programs for internal use. They're using C# and their programs require the latest Framework version on every client PC. Using group policies I installed Framework on the clients - no problem there. But what I have a problem with - and where I'd need your help - is when it comes to trusting those applications. Now I have two questions: 1. According to my colleagues you can't write a Framework-based program without security. So everytime you have a new application or change an application you have use the "Trust an assembly"-Wizard on every workstation again. Is that right? 2. If 1.) is right, do you have any idea on how to do that process automatically ... using i.e. group policies and other means. I don't want to run around every couple of days (that's about how often our developers change their programs) to change the trust on about 100 PCs. I couldn't find any info on that on the web. I'm sure it's out there somewhere - but as I have no idea on how the whole .NET and framework things work I hit a wall when it came to understanding the articles.  - Unloading assemblies Hi all, I'm developing a tool that explores contents of assemblies via reflection. When the tool is requested to get some information from an assembly, it loads the assembly and reads the information. I would like unload the assembly immediately after to prevent it from locking and give the client a possibility to update it. Is there any way to do this? System.Assembly class has no Unload method, so I create separate application domain and load the assembly in this domain. Then I unload the entire domain by AppDomain.Unload call. However it seems that the loaded assemblies are still locked even after unloading the domain. Has anybody ideas about the reasons of such behavior? I would compile the program, then do the following in order given: gacutil /u myAssembly gacutil /i myAssembly.dll net stop iisadmin net start w3svc Yet IIS and the web applications conitnued to use the old code, no matter how i played with these steps and the order of them. The only way i could get IIS to use the new code was to open a windows explorer windows to C:\WINNT\Assembly, locate my assembly, right click it and go to properties. Once i did this, IIS would use the new code. This sounds totally bizarre, but i ran the process over and over and over and over, first trying without going to the file, then going to the file, and it was 100% consistent.  - Uploading files up to 150MB onto server Dear all, I am running an online file management server that allows web clients to upload files from a webform to the web server. Using the code "filename.PostedFile.SaveAs(fullPath);" I have no problem uploading file with size up to 25MB, but the page starts to create problem with any size above 25 MB - the error message displayed is "Server Unavailable" or occasionally it just dies off. I am running the web server using ASP.net framework 1.0 developed using C# In the Application Log of the machine's event viewer, I get these message: Event Type: Error Event Source: ASP.NET 1.0.3705.288 Event Category: None Event ID: 1003 Date: 6/26/2003 Time: 10:45:47 AM User: N/A Computer: ROSIE Description: aspnet_wp.exe (PID: 2108) was recycled because it was suspected to be in a deadlocked state. It did not send any responses for pending requests in the last 180 seconds. Event Type: Error Event Source: ASP.NET 1.0.3705.288 Event Category: None Event ID: 1001 Date: 6/26/2003 Time: 9:54:35 AM User: N/A Computer: ROSIE Description: aspnet_wp.exe (PID: 1532) was recycled because memory consumption exceeded the 306 MB (60 percent of available RAM). I'd set the following value on Web.Config, but it still doesn't work: <httpRuntime maxRequestLength="153600" /> Anyone know how to go around this problem?  - Debugging Shared Assemblies (ex. Custom Controls) Hi Gurus .. I would really appreciate some insights for the problem that bugs me for quite some time. I keep my custom controls in their own shared (private/public key signed) assembly. I need to have it shared. Usually I work with a Web application project that has a reference to my shared, custom controls assembly. Web project is a "Startup Project". I need to be able to set a breakpoint in my Custom Controls (shared) project. VS.NET solution can hold more then one project - that's the most convenient way to go. There is no problem to stop debugger at that breakpoint having all assemblies kept as private. Annoyance begins with shared assemblies and its projects not being set as a startup project. The reference "Copy Local = false" always locks them up producing errors : "The file xxx cannot be copied to the run directory. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process". "Copy Local = true" helps to eliminate the error since the reference is no longer kept by public key in my Web application's manifest BUT even though they should be treated at this point as private assemblies I can't seem to get them to debug at all. I keep my shared assemblies in GAC so the reference with "Copy Local = False" at the run time concerns this location. Sometimes I succeed and can debug inside my shared assembly from other startup project but in so indeterministic way. No matter what - locking up shared assembly at the compilation time undermines efficient way of working with multiproject VS.NET solution. Can somebody share any guildlines, experiences ? (username) has certain permissions (for example read) on a
certain file \\anypc\someshare\somedir\somefile.txt?
The verification is done using different account (for
example app_process).
Any ideas?
