    - XmlSerializer for network messaging I'm considering using the System.Xml.Serialization.XmlSerializer class to implement an in-house data protocol between various applications in a suite of products. It was already decided for various reasons that the protocol should use XML to encode the data. I had considered simply writing custom code to marshal and unmarshal the XML messages (since they would be fairly simple XML messages and nesting would be limited), but then I thought: why not just have .NET do all that grunt- work for me (there is a limited amount of time to get this work finished)? Thus, I'm currently floating the idea of designing the protocol around the XmlSerializer class, where I simply define a base Message class, and create a bunch of Message-derived classes for each message in the protocol's message repretoire. Then I can code to the classes instead of directly to the XML DOM, using an XmlSerializer to serialize/deserialize the messages to and from Message-derived object instances. Then, the high-level protocol API would define everything in terms of Message objects. Thus, a client could say something like the following to authenticate itself to the server: ServerResponse response = client.SendMessage (new LogonRequest("user","password")); where ServerReponse and LogonRequest are both derived from Message. On the server side, it might get a MessageReceived event that contains a Message object representing the received message as a parameter (which I'll call msg). The server can then decide what to do based on the run-time type of the object: . . . if (typeof(msg) is LogonRequest) { LogonRequest logon = (LogonRequest) msg; checkCredentials(logon.UserId, logon.Password); } if (typeof(msg) is LogoffRequest) { . . . Obviously, it's a little more complicated because of the limitations of XmlSerializer (can't serialize ArrayLists and IDictionary-derived classes) and the slight annoyance of having to tack an XmlInclude attribute to the base class identifying each of the derived class types. As for the ArrayList/IDictionary limitations, we are passing scalar data around for the most part, and I could use just use a Collection when I need to push around a list of items. I doubt that I'm the first person to have thought of this: in fact, this implementation is essentially a subset of remoting, albeit concentrating more on data that on method invocation. On that note, I didn't do Remoting because a message-centric protocol seemed to fit more naturally with the requirements, whereas Remoting implies coding to the RPC model, which then implies writing a bunch of methods on an object that would expose a very ugly API (for example, one of the requirements of the protocol is the ability to query a data system using a fairely fine-grained XML-based query format, the details of which don't translate very cleanly into a neat litte parameter list, although yes, I could just pass the XML query part as a single string parameter). Point is, I'm thinking I can save myself some grief and let the XmlSerializer do most of the dirty work across the wire, and I can concentrate on protocol logic. Does this design make sense? I google'd various combination of "XmlSerializer" and "sockets" and didn't find much. A few other people seem to have tried a similar approach to creating a message-based protocol, getting XML marshalling for free via XmlSerializer, but it doesn't seem to be a "popular" design as far as what google thinks. This makes me wonder if it is fatally flawed....I mean, it sounds great on paper (to me anyway), but I'm wondering if there aren't some weird edge cases that I would have to code for. -- Mike S Tag: Google Adsense Tag: 133025

    - PropertyInfo.SetValue on new ObjectCollect I have a Windows Forms designer that writes the created form (with controls) as Xml/Xaml. Alternately it reads Xml/Xaml to create form controls in the designer form. I am trying to do this using reflection. I can use Activator.CreateInstance to create the controls and can set most of the properties using just a little bit of code: info.SetValue(temp, TypeDescriptor.GetConverter(info.PropertyType).ConvertFrom(val), null); where info is the PropertyInfo for the control property that will be set, temp is the control, and val is the string representation of the value. This breaks for some properties like font and the Items collection for some controls. It is the latter that I am looking for help with. The problem is that when I create the new control using CreateInstance the control is returned with an empty Items collection. To further complicate the matter, the instance is returned as an object. I could simply determine the control type and use a switch statement to add each Item to the collection. That can lead to alot of code and a lot of maintenance. My goal is to populate the Items collection generically using reflection as I am already doing for most of the properties. I can use CreateInstance to create an value object but since the control is cast as an object, it does not reveal the Items collection and I can therefore not add the new value object.     - How to embed IE in C#.net windows application? Hello, friends, We have a Windows application programmed using c#.net 2005. Now our users need to access web pags of one or two dedicated IP addresses only. We are thinking to embed an IE component in our application and control it in our application. As a resutl, it will look like one windows application and our users won't notice that he/she is actually viewing a web page. Can we do this way? If yes, how?     - .NET 2.0 - Sending Emails - Subject and Attachment Name Encoding Issues Hi there, I have an e-commerce website that sends automated emails that contain an automatically generated PDF attachment. It's similar to this email sample: ------ Email Sample: Subject: <Name> just completed their assessment Attachment: <Name> assessment results.PDF Body: This is a friendly alert that <Name> just completed their assessment... ------ The system correctly stores <Name> in a SQL Server nvarchar database column. Some names stored use Latin characters, while others use Chinese characters. Notably the issue that I've just recently found is that the automatically generated emails are not showing <Name> correctly if the person's name happens to have Chinese characters in it. Here is the code that is used to create and send the emails: ------ SmtpClient client = new SmtpClient(); MailAddress from = new MailAddress(this.emailFrom); MailAddress to = new MailAddress(this.emailTo, String.Format("{0} {1}", this.firstName, this.lastName)); MailMessage msg = new MailMessage(from, to); if (this.attachment != null) { this.attachment.NameEncoding = System.Text.Encoding.UTF8; msg.Attachments.Add(this.attachment); } msg.SubjectEncoding = System.Text.Encoding.UTF8; // The line below sets the subject to something like: // "<Name> just completed their assessment" msg.Subject = templateManager.ProcessFileTemplate("AssessmentComplete.Subject.vm", context); msg.Body = templateManager.ProcessFileTemplate( "AssessmentComplete.vm", context); msg.BodyEncoding = System.Text.Encoding.UTF8; client.Send(msg); ------ I built this awhile back assuming that since I was setting all email encodings to UTF8, the email system would work for various languages. Unfortunately that's not the case. When an automatically generated email is sent where the person's name contains Chinese characters, the subject will typically read: "??? ?? ??? just completed their assessment" The email body however correctly displays the Chinese name. The PDF file attachment name will be named: "??? ?? ??? assessment results.PDF" msg.Subject does write to console and shows in the debugger correctly with the Chinese characters, as does the body and file attachment name. So the storage of the Chinese characters is correct, as is the retrieval into .NET String objects. The error seems to be happening during the transport of the email I suspect. When I hard-code the subject and attachment encodings to something such as System.Text.Encoding.GetEncoding("gb2312"), which is Simplified Chinese, the Chinese characters display correctly. Why wouldn't UTF8 encoding work though? Also, I'm not able to simply hardcode an encoding of "gb2312" as the subject and file attachment encoding - what happens if names are stored in other languages? This would clearly fail. Maybe there's a way to guess at the encoding of a .NET string, but I'm not aware of one. Shouldn't UTF8 work in the first place? What do people normally do to handle this? Should I create email subject lines with Unicode escape codes for all characters? If so, is there an out of the box approach to do this? Confused!     - Calling CASPOL from within Installshield 12. I am trying to call CASPOL from within an install being created using Installsheild 12 Express using the Custom Actions. I have a custom action which calls CASPOL but I cannot get CASPOL to find the exe that I wasn to be used for adding the trust relationship. I am using the following command line with CASPOL :- -quiet -machine -pp off -ag All_Code -strong -file temp.exe -noname - noversion FullTrust -name TempSnk -description "Code group granting full trust to temp application" The porblem seems to be with finding my temp.exe. Since I am doing this through an install I do not know the specific location of my temp.exe, so what I tried to do was copy CASPOL to the same location as my temp.exe, but CASPOL still doesn't seem to find it. And if one uses a collection of objects the one more empty object doesn't seem to do much difference. Or am I wrong here? 2) (minor) Why is this explicite implementation? I want to write a method that I can call at the start of each method for logging purposes. I realise I can use reflection to get the name of the current method and the names of the parameters. How can I get the name of the method that called the current method?     - Overriding Equals Hello all, I am faced with a dilemma with a class I am working on. I am overriding the Equals() method to be able to make comparisons with objects of the same type, but this class has a member field that contains a collection. My problem is, the two objects I am comparing are exactly the same but the collections in each object are different. Is it a good idea to check equality of member fields that are collections? For example: class MyClass has two member fields: Name and Jobs. Jobs is a JobCollection of Job objects. Both MyClass and JobCollection override Equals(). I have a instance B of MyClass that contains 4 Jobs and in an Array of MyClass objects, I have element C that contains the same name as B but only consists of 3 Jobs. The Jobs are unsynchronized because when B changed from 3 to 4, there was no way to notify the Array of MyClass objects that B and C are the same and the new Job added to B had to be added to C as well. Here's what I'm doing: 1. I've built a stored procedure that pulls my data, and renders it into proper XML. I'm using 'FOR XML AUTO, ELEMENTS', but I'll bet the issues would occur with EXPLICIT also. 2. Using VS2005, I've added a DataSet item, and have dragged the sProc into the dataset so I can access it through a TableAdapter. 3. When I fill the DataTable via the TableAdapter, I get a single column limited to 2033 characters, so I'm not getting the entire XML tree.     - Desktop shortcut when deploying I added a deployment project to my solution and when through the process of setting it all up. When I run my installer it does everything correctly apart from the fact that the shortcut on the desktop and the program files menu points not to the exe file but to the folder the exe file is in. When I go into my deployment project and try to change the target property of the shortcut it only lets me choose "Application Folder". I can not choose the exe. What am I doing wrong ?     - Bug in My.Computer.FileSystem.WriteAllText I've found that My.Computer.FileSystem.WriteAllText in .Net 2.0 writes three additional, non-text bytes in front of the string it's supposed to be writing. These bytes are not in the normal text range of values, and don't show up if you load the file into Notepad or other text viewers, but can be easily seen with Visual Studio 2005's Binary editor. Additionally, if you use this method to write out an HTML file to be embedded in other HTML (like an Outlook signature), these bytes get rendered. Finding this bug was a pain, to say the least. I have an example VS2005 solution folder which shows the bug, and would be happy to send it to someone at MS if anyone is interested, but you can verify in about 2 minutes with a simple "Hello World!" output to a new text file using the above method.     - Button Background in .NET 3.0 In XAML I set up a style that says a button's background is red. I assign it to a button on my form. When I mouse over it the background turns usual blue-ish color. Mouse away it goes back to red. However, if I click the button and mouse away, the colors begin to alternate between red and the blue.     - Why so many copies of .NET DLL? Why does .NET make so many copies of my DLLs? I inherited a large project and there are two pervasive DLLs that get used everywhere: PlcmObject.dll and PlcmUtil.dll Why our build procedure copies them all over our build directory is a mystery to me. I did a dir /s c:\ and found 170 copies (I assume that is 85 copies each) of these two DLLs. Can anyone guess why our build procedure would make so many copies? I thought the whole point of using a DLL instead of an OLB (can you create OLBs for .NET project?) or including the source code again was to save disk space. Now I assume our build procedure would not make copies of these DLLs in the two Microsoft directories below. Why does Microsoft (Visual Studio perhaps?) make so many copies? I guess NUnit is making copies too. 6 copies in the Application Data directory, for example: c:/Documents and Settings/sheintze/Local Settings/Application Data/assembly/dl2/GGH8B4CG.6O1/3C1CCLC7.KVR/d27da362/4238e818_09dac701/PlcmUtility.dll 9 copies in the nunit directory, for example: c:/Documents and Settings/sheintze/Local Settings/Temp/nunit20/ShadowCopyCache/633227782609218750/Tests/assembly/dl2/9f92218c/207c98d8_53dfc701/PlcmUtility.DLL This is making life hell because periodically we have to find and delete these 170 copies to make the build work!     - ASP.NET/AJAX Accordion I have an asp.net web software program which utilizes AJAX. I use ajax on many of the pages and have not had issues in development mode or on the user's side.     - Problem post KB937143 install Windows Server with .Net dll exposed via COM Dear Group, We've recently applied KB937143 to a server and a bespoke dll we have (for encryption) has suddenly stopped working. This is a VS 2005 (framework 2) dll that simply wraps some of the MD5 functions within the .Net Framework. The dll has been exposed to COM via the usual means. This has all been working without issue in a production environment for well over 12 months with the dll being shared between a .Net application and a server side classic ASP site. The problem appears to be that KB937143 has done something to the way dll's are exposed. The dll is shown to be still registered but all the methods for it have just disappeared! Have tried un-registering the dll and re-registering to no avail. Un-install KB937143 and the COM methods will reappear! Note that this issue only happens on servers that have IE 7 installed - IE 6 based machines appear to be unaffected. Any helps thoughts, or comments very much appreciated.     - Implementing a Thread.JoinAll(timeout) using managed threading I recently found myself in a situation wanting to Thread.JoinAll(timeout) (i.e. blocking the calling thread until all a list of threads have finished or the timeout has expired). I wanted to do this using only managed threading[1], which means Monitors instead of WaitHandles. I also didn't want to assume the threads were worker threads in the thread pool. The solution I came up with resembles the one described in Joseph Albahari's "Threading in C#" E-book[2]. The problem is, I (and it) relied on a. locking, Wait()ing and Pulse()ing to control flow b. decreasing an "number of active threads" counter c. keeping track of how much of the desired timeout has passed d. assuming everything is done when the counter reaches 0 Even though it seems to work, it seems rather kludgy for something that is more or less 1 line of code if you use the thread pool and WaitAll().     - FTP vb.net firewall hi guys, i have recently implemented an ftp class in vb.net for work with one of my clients. unfortunately when i put my software live i found that the client requires the a firewall parameter to be passed into the ftp class to make it work correctly. The thing is, when we try to get the objects back (deserialize) with a different instance of the application, we receive an exception stating the constructor of the generic class does not exist.
