    - Cannot read in the keys from app.config (.NET 2.0) Hey guys, I'm stumped! :( I've been trying now for the last four days to read in the settings from an app.config file, but i've failed miserably, at what seemed like a simple task. I was trying to find out how the whole System.Configuration namespace is working. So, I made a simple C# windows application: One form, with a single textbox and and a simple "Load" button. this is what's in the Event handler: private void cmdLoad_Click( object sender, EventArgs e ) { // txtSettings is a textbox txtSettings.Text = System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["MySetting"]; } BUT! when i click on the load button, the textbox does not get assigned any value! i mean, nada, zilttz, String.Empy, "" . I set up a breakpoing on the assignment above and i examined AppSettings[] . Turns out the AllKeys member has 0 (zero) dimensions. I was flabergasted :( Following is my App.settings file. I added this file by right clicking on the solution explorer, on the Project name (not the solution name) and then selecting "add new item -> Application Configuration file. Keep in mind this is a 2.0 application file. And yes, appSettings WORKS GREAT if i add that section in manually. 1) is the <appSettings> section still required by the 2.0 framework in order to read in application settings data? 1.1) if yes, why isn't it explicitely created or why doesn't the preprocessor/compiler throw a warning about it? 1.2) Yes, i could use the <appSettings> section and do my job worderfully and get this over with. But that's not the point: If 2.0 has it's own way of retrieving application settings data, i should be able to use *THAT* instead of the depresiated 1.1 way, shouldn't I? Where am I fucking up? 2) requirePermission="false" <-- what does this setting do? 2.1) why does VS2k5 bitch about it not being declared? 2.2) do I need to declare it? 2.2.1) if yes, where and how? thanks guys, looking forward to your answers.     - regexp - need help Hi, I want to parse string like "<number><trailing-char><title>" where <number> is a string containing digits and dots, <trailing-char> a whitespace or a semicolon and <title> any chars. I use a regexp (framework 1.1) to parse the strings. We are randomly getting this error message on our development and staging machines: Attempted to read or write protected memory. When we get this error, it's usually either on the opening of the connection OR on the execution of the proc/package. We had to install the client, then install, as a separate package the oracle support for MTS which supports transactions.     - Socket works fine first time, fails second time Hello all I'm using a bit of very simple code to query a game server using a UDP packet. It works the fine time I run it but then when I run it again straight away it fails with.. "A message sent on a datagram socket was larger than the internal message buffer or some other network limit, or the buffer used to receive a datagram into was smaller than the datagram itself" I reckon it's because the socket is not closing properly so is dtill open when I run it a second time. I assume this is down to lingeroption but I can't seem to set this to false as the syntax on msdn doesn't seem to work. Could someeone give me a hand with this please? My code is below...     - SqlServer UDF and DirectoryServices Using a VisualStudio Sql Server Database project template, I want to access DirectoryServices (AD) from a UDF, but cannot add a reference to directoryservices.dll (legally) into the c# project, and if I add it illegally (in the XML) ,i get a sql error saying that DirectoryServices is not in the SQL catalog when I try to deploy it Qusetion: can I access DirectoryServices from Sql Server in either a UDF or SP.     - Sending multicast messages from specific IP address Hi guys! I have several IP addresses defined on my PC (all bound to the same interface), and i need to send multicast messages from a specific address. How can i bind my outgoing multicast messages to a particular address? Thanks! p.s.: i've seen suggestions to use "MulticastInterface" socket option in order to solve this problem. However, this only affects the interface, via which the messages are sent, but not the address (as i said, i have several addresses defined over one interface). I have a problem with it when entering international text through the IME window.     - Memory leak with .NET 1.1 SP1 My mixed-mode application repeatedly calls various pre-compiled JScript .NET DLLs which generate different sorts of reports (e.g. through automation). This results in a continuous increase of the 'Private Bytes' performance counter of the application and finally ends in a crash after 2-3 weeks of operation. The implementation is done via application domains: pAppDomain = AppDomain::CreateDomain(...); pAppDomain -> CreateInstanceFromAndUnwrap(...) -> GetType() -> InvokeMember(...) pAppDomain -> Unload(pAppDomain); The 'InvokeMember' calls a function called 'LoadAndExecute' in a managed DLL (C++) which itself calls the pre-compiled Script DLLs like this: pAssembly = Assembly -> LoadFrom(...); pAssembly -> CreateInstance(...) -> GetType() -> InvokeMember(...); After the Script DLL has completed and returned control, the application domain for the managed and Script DLLs is unloaded in order to force a release of all involved resources.     - HTTP version compatibility Does anyone know if there's any issues involving versions of .Net Framework, Visual Studio and HTTP which might cause a compatibility problem? We currently using VS1.1 for our web apps (C#) and the app seems to be up and and down quite regularly on production and we're not quite sure why. Our techies told us that because we're (developers) using the wrong version of http, 1 instead of 1.1, which cause some sort of compatibility issues and/or memory leaks...blah blah blah. Without going into too much details and politics, I just like to know if there's any connections between Visual Studio versions, .Net Framework and the http versions which might cause compatibility issues. I'll explain the case and maybe some of you will be able to advise me. I have a byte() (byte array) containing about 100,000 elements (a bit less, but always is around 80,000-95,000). I need to take the data from it as int16 and compare the int16 to a reference value for now, I'm using a MemoryStream created from the byte(), a BinaryReader that reads from the MemoryStream (ReadInt16) and then compare the int16 to a reference value and return false if the int16 is greater than the reference value. if all the values are lower than the reference value, then the function returns true. If it returns after the first loop or so, it's ok, but if it runs through all the elements it's way too long. In assembly it would take way less time than that, because I could move the reference value in one of the CPU's register and leave it there as long as my loop runs and iterate directly in the byte() to get 2 bytes at a time. In VB.NET it's a function that stands in about 10 lines of code (maybe even lower), but it takes up to 50% of the CPU (when looked in the task manager) which is way too much because it runs very often. When it does not run (many other things are running in the app), the app takes about 1%-2% of the CPU, when this close loop starts being called, the app get's to 30%-50% of the CPU... it's a bit excessive due to the fact that the function is called about 8-10 times a second. thanks for your help ThunderMusic Tag: .NET Framework data provider for firebird Tag: 112052

    - Framework Unregistered after Reboot Hi, There are three workstations in the group where I work that are constantly having the .NET framework uninstalled if we reboot. In order to get the local ASP.NET applications running again we have to run aspnet_regiis -i and iisreset. The question is what could be causing this? There is group policy in effect, perhaps Active Directory could be causing this? Any recent viruses that would cause this behaviour? I did a full scan that turned up nothing... This is what we are doing, in our VB.NET Project we have an MDI form, and a child form class called frmConfigBrowser. Hi, Something strange is happing with my Windowf Forms application (VB.NET 2005): The users had all local Administrator-rights on there pc. We changed it to the 'normal' users, and now they can't run our V.NET application anymore! The application starts (you can see the screen and caption etc), and than they get the well known error "MyApplication has encountered a problem and needs to close" with the "send error report"-button etc. When we change their rights back to PowerUser ou Administrator, it works again... Does anybody get any idea why this happens? And how to find a solution? Do they need some special rights on something?     - gradual slow down Hey guys... I have a question regarding performance of windows forms.. Is it normal behaviour for a windows form to gradually become slower and slower as more stuff gets loaded? I have a tab control on my form which when the user selects a tab i dynamically load a selection of controls to go onto the tabpage.. I have monitored this with the QueryPerformance API and the results show that as more controls get loaded and place onto the form, it starts to slow down dramatically, 3 times slower plus then the orginal time. Could I be doing something wrong or is this the way windows forms works... I understand why it could slow down, but i ened to know a way around it... (My process at one stage was taking up to 30 seconds to generate content... I have since revised my structure and got it down to approx 4-5 seconds... I still need it faster... I would like almost instant.... My times now start out about 60 ms per each control group (being about 6 controls of labels textboxes and checkboxes and a selectlistbox) and then by the end (about 6 groups) is upto about 300ms. these controls arnt "grouped" as such but are just controls in a particular section of my form. I am using vs2005. The tab control has a panel as the main container which all the controls go in. (this panel stays small until the end of the generating process, then a resize the panel.) I set "e.HasMorePages = True" after completeing the first page in the "PrintDocument1_PrintPage" subroutine, and then "exit sub".     - Consuming COM-Objects built as .NET assembly Hello! As we use .NET technology to build our applications, we also create several components using it. To be able to use the components in unmanaged applications, we expose the public interfaces to COM. On my workstation, I have .NET 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 installed. We now found out, that the .NET runtime always loads the latest version of itself, if any .NET based COM object is created. We know, that there are ways to force the loader to use a specific version of the runtime, but the following topic is not completely clear: Somebody offers a COM object developed using .NET technology and builds that using one of the available runtime versions (lets say 2.0). Another guy, offering another COM object builds that using version 1.1. A third guy builds an unmanaged application using both COM objects. Lets say, the application has two functions, A (using COM object 1) and B (using COM object 2). If the user activates A before B, COM object 1 gets created first, and runtime version 2.0 gets loaded into the process. So, COM object 2 will be executed with runtime version 2.0 too. If the user does it the opposite way, COM object 1 will be run with runtime version 1.1. Thats the way I think it would be! I know that the best way is to ensure, that all used COM objects are built with the same runtime version, but what if you don't have a way to do that!? Interestingly if I put a Thread.Sleep in the main thread before ts.Complete() the open works ok and the transaction is promoted. This seems to suggest that the ts.complete is doing something to the transaction to stop the second connection enlisting. However I thought that the whole point of the BlockCommitUntilComplete option is to stop the root TransactionScope committing until any DependentTransaction processing is done. Also, if I open another connection in the main thread (therefore promoting the transaction) before I start the second thread then it also works. If I just declare the class as derived from the base type and execute CreateType() it works fine. The problem that I'm running into is being able to access these resources from external assemblies. I have created a "CompanyResources" Assembly, that contains a Resources.resx with all my resources. Code is then automatically generated for this, and placed in a Resources.Designer.cs file. For classes residing in my CompanyResources assembly, I have strongly typed access to the resources. For example, if I have an image titled "MATERIAL_REACTANT", I can access this image from within the resources assembly with: Properties.Resources.MATERIAL_REACTANT; Unfortunately, I cannot get strongly typed access to these resources from classes outside of the resources assembly. If I examine the autogenerated code in Resources.Designer.cs, I see that the class and all resource properties are "internal": internal class Resources { ... internal static System.Drawing.Bitmap MATERIAL_REACTANT .... } Obviously there is no way of accessing these properties from outside of the assembly, when things are internal. Is there a way to get around this? I did find a way to access these resources from other assemblies by doing the following: private System.Resources.ResourceManager resources_ = new System.Resources.ResourceManager("CompanyResources.Properties.Resources", System.Reflection.Assembly.Load("CompanyResources")); The downside of doing this is that I lose strongly typed access (and intellisense) to the resources. So instead of: resources_.MATERIAL_REACTANT I have to do: resources_.GetObject("MATERIAL_REACTANT"); It seems that there must be some way around this. Clearly one of the benefits of .NET Resources is being able to have strongly typed access, and it would seem that having one global location for all resources should be possible. Any suggestions?     - Retrieving info on files with a long name using .NET I had previously written a program to set the attributes of all files in a folder. The program uses the Windows API functions FindFirstFile and FindFindNextFile to process the files in a specified folder and its sub-folders. By specify the prefix â??\\?\UNC\â?? or â??\\?\â?? files or folders with names longer than 260 characters are processed. I have now written a VB.NET 2003 equivalent using.NET Framework version 1.1. The program uses the Directory class methods GetDirectories and GetFiles, and the FileInfo and FileAttributes classes to do exactly the same thing. However it appears that these .NET Framework classes do not accept the long file name prefix in the path so the program cannot set the attributes of files or folders with long names. Hi all,

I installed Visual Studio 2005 standard and when I click on new
connection (to connect to a SQL database) I get:

"An unexpected error occurred in the .NET Framework data provider for
firebird"

I tried deinstalling VS2005 completely but still get this message. The
firebird data provider is uninstalled long time ago (and I don't need
this). How can I fix this? Where do I need to look?
