    - Debugging startsup slow I am debugging managed and unmanaged code in C++ DLL When ever i start debugging debugger hangs for 30secs or so at the last line below at the last line and then continues as normal.     - Misbehaving COM object? We have a .NET project that makes pretty regular use of a COM object that appears to be misbehaving. Am I correct in understanding that setting a COM object to nothing should act the same way that it would have in VB6? By this I mean it is actually destroyed and not marked for GC. We have an object that is called in a polling routine and looks to be leaking 6-8K at a time and never being reclaimed even though it is set to nothing.     - Namespace organization Any advice on how to organize my core class library project into sub-namespaces? What are the general rules of thumb regarding cross-namespace references? Can I have a class in namespace A have a function or a property that returns a class from a different namespace? For example, lets say I have a root namespace called ACME for my class library project. Under the root namespace are classes such as Individual, Address, etc. I also have a namespace defined for financial classes, called ACME.Financial, which contains classes such as Invoice and Transaction. Under Financial is a subnamespace called Discounts (ACME.Financial.Discounts). A second namespace under the root, called ACME.Groups, contains classes such as Group, GroupPlan, etc. ACME ACME.Financial ACME.Financial.Discounts ACME.Groups Now, if I'm coding something for the GroupPlan class in ACME.Groups, is it ok (I know it's possible but is it acceptable) to return an object of type ACME.Financial.Invoice from the ACME.Groups.GroupPlan class or should I stick to classes contained within the local namespace boundary (ACME.Groups) or higher (ACME)?     - WebRequest https and proxy authentication Hi I am using WebRequest object to access a https URL through a proxy: string Url = "https://www.verisign.com"; WebProxy proxy = new WebProxy("http://proxyserver.domain.com:80",true); proxy.Credentials=System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials; WebRequest req =WebRequest.Create(Url); req.Method="GET"; req.Proxy= proxy; result = req.GetResponse(); The proxy server requires NTLM authentication. This code works fine if (a) The URL is an http site (b) the URL is a local https site (therefore bypassing the proxy) but doesnt work where proxy authentication is required for an external https URL. I can access the https site fine through the proxy in IE so the proxy and authentication are clearly working OK. I have read another post that indicated this was an issue in .NET Compact Framework (http://www.dotnet247.com/247reference/msgs/51/255270.aspx) - does anybody know if this is also the case with .NET on W2003?     - Socket data out of order I am using asynchronous socket receives and writing the data to a disk file. I am finding all of the data makes it to the file, but it is SLIGHTLY out of order. The approach is to create a pool of contexts, each which has a 1K byte buffer. Then I start it all by getting a buffer from the pool, and do a BeginReceive on the socket. In the receive completion handler I call EndReceive. THEN get a buffer from the free pool, and I invoke BeginReceive again. If my buffer pool was exhausted I would allocate a new one, rather than stall. THEN I invoke BeginWrite to write the just-received data to the disk file. In the write completion handler I return the context and buffer to my buffer pool. I am managing my buffer pool in a .NET "Queue". I protect all Enqueue and Dequeue with Synclock on the Queue object. Enqueues and Dequeues seem to have integrity, in that there are the correct number of buffer pools in the queue when the whole thing winds down. Without the disk writing I get about 60 MBits / second maximum received on the socket. When I involve the disk writing it hunkers down to about 22 MBits / second. My pool size is initially 25 contexts/buffers, but typically grows to about 80-90 with very large and very fast transmissions. I don't queue up multiple simultaneous socket receives. I know that doing that could easily result in EndReceives firing out of order with the data stream. But obviously I am queueing up to about 80-90 pending disk writes. But they SHOULD be queued up in the order they were received. And I understand they should then end up in the disk file in the correct order. I suspect something about this aspect of writing to the disk is what is getting the data out of order. Can you see what I am doing wrong? Or perhaps there are some known bugs in the Framework?     - Date format question Hello, I would like to define a date format that displays a datetime according to the current culture like this : if locale is 'fr' then date format would be "dd/MM HH:mm" if locale is 'en' then date format would be "MM/dd HH:mm" and so on....     - Multicast Sockets: no sending with active local Internet Connection I have a Multicast Sockets Chat / Picture Program that runs correctly when there is no Internet Connection on the local Machine. 2 Chat Programs run correctly on the same Maschine (when different Ports are used). 1 Chat Programm on each Maschine also works correctly. 3 Chat Programs run correctly on the both Maschines (when different Ports are used on the second Machine). But when the local Internet is started on the first Machine the Chat program on that Machine cannot recieve or send. The second Chat on the second Machine recieve however the Message from the first Chat on that Machine. What could be the cause of this be? The ports for the Fireball are OK (when newly compiled, it allways asks). The Group used is : 234.77.77.0 - could it be something with the '234' ? I have recieved Mails with similar reports. On another LAN (also without Internet) everything is OK. I have been told that on a LAN where the Internet Connection is on some other Machine it also works. So it looks like problem with the Local Connection - but I can see nothing in the Properties that could be set.     - ADO.NET and SQL Server Data Paging I had to built a custom data paging control for my asp.net app and SQL Server. This is what I'm doing: 1. do a SELECT to a SqlDataReader 2. create a DataTable with data from GetSchema() 3. loop trough the datareader using .Read() to the point I want to start 4. add data to DataTable with max of [pageSize] records 5. close the data reader and return The question is: Isn't looping reader.Read() doing nothing to go to start point where I want start getting data too expensive? Although DataReader is fast, won't ".Read()" get the row data from the server to the client? If so, if I need to get data from record 10000 ahead, it is actually reading all 10 thousand rows of data, so it is a big waste of resources. Maybe someone who knows more about the internals of the DataReader can answer this. Since SQL Server doesn't support "LIMIT" like keywords, if there is a better way to page data in sql server, I would like to know. Thanks.     - Implementing / using the IExpando interface Guys, Does anyone know much about the IExpando interface? I have a business object I've created and I'd like to add support for methods / attributes at runtime so that scripting clients ( e.g. ASP / VBScript / Java script ) can call the .NET object through a RCW and invoke methods which are added at runtime. Do I need to inherit my .NET class from IExpando and implement methods such as AddMethod. Are these called by the scripting engine to resolve methods which don't exist. e.g. assume a query class contains methods such as Save however a method Resolve needs to be added at runtime so I can write code such as oQuery.Resolve.     - SQL + Dreamweaver Hello, I seem to be running into a problem with regards to data size etc: Explanation: A person opens a .aspx page and posts and writes an article of a few thousand words. When they click Insert Record they get this message: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: String or binary data would be truncated. The statement has been terminated. at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior cmdBehavior, RunBehavior runBehavior, Boolean returnStream) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() at DreamweaverCtrls.DataSet.DoInit() Problem: It's to do with the size of the data being inserted into the record and I have increased the VarChar length to 6000 characters to compensate. Is there a better DataType to hold the information? With MS Access this is a major problem but I would expect that but not with SQL Server? Any suggestions?     - Determining the path to the .NET framework Is there a canonical way to determine the path to the folder where the runtime environment is installed? The reason I am asking is that I have created a small Office Add-In in C# which needs to be registered as a COM component using regasm.exe during installation. So I need a way for the install script (the Add-In is only a part of a larger project which does not use the default Microsoft installer) to find the regasm, since it is not in the path by default.     - Drag and Drop Question I've been looking around for info on this, but not finding much. What I'm trying to do is allow a user to drag and drop objects between two forms in my app. The objects are classes that I've built and I want the target form to be able to recognize what kind of type is being dragged over it and dropped. From what I could tell from the MSDN docs, I apparently need to add a custom dataformat type to the existing list, and/or to register a new data type in the registry. To me, this directly states that when I Pulse a locked object that has threads waiting, a thread that is waiting with a timeout will be moved to the ready queue ahead of a thread that is waiting without a timeout. It also rather strongly implies that a thread that is about to timeout will get priority ahead of a thread that is willing to wait longer. Yet, the attached program wakes waiting threads in creation order, exactly as if a Pulse or PulseAll simply moved threads from the waiting queue to the ready queue in the order that they entered the waiting queue. We're trying to do serial comm with the new serialport object in the VS Beta 2/.NET Beta 2 system (using C#, but I don't think that's terribly important). I'm using a slightly cranky GPS receiver, and it works fairly well under Windows, but when hangs hard in the PocketPC 2003 emulator, and on an actual iPaq handheld. Does anyone have a SIMPLE code snippet that works for serial comm for them under the Compact Framework? serPort.ReadLn() or similar would be sufficient.     - A Question about Control.Invoke I have a code sequence that goes something like this: 1. Start an asynchronous i/o with a completion callback of /cb/ Now when the i/o completes we end up in the /cb/ routine.... note that we are in a pool thread during the callback, not the main form's thread. 2. call the Endxxxx(ar) to retrieve the results of the operation 3. form.Invoke(delegate method, params) 4. do another asynchronous i/o for more data At step 3 we call Invoke to switch to the main form's thread and pass it some data. This is necessary since doing anything with form's controls outside its main thread is not safe. My question is what is Invoke doing under the covers? Does it just launch the delegate with the equivalent of a PostMessage or PostThreadMessage and return straightaway so we can get the next i/o started at step (4), or is step (4) not executed until the delegate method (and any routines it calls in turn) in step (3) completed?     - Application.Run not creating Main Form Sometimes my main form appears and sometimes it doesn't. VS.NET acts as if the process is running and I can click the "stop" button but I get no windows or forms.     - Implementing a namespace over more than one assembly? Hi all, Can anyone tell me if it is advisable (or even possible) to define a namespace across 2 or more assemblies? For example, consider the namespace SampleApplication.Data.Providers Would it be possible to have assembly A define a class as part of that namespace as well as Assembly B also declaring a class to be within it as well? In particular, I have a number of data providers. It would be useful (I think) to declare them in the same namespace, but for the purposes of a demonstration I'm doing, each provider must exisit in its own seperately deployed assembly.     - Delphi 4 & VB.NET, don't play nice?? Hello all, Im stumpped. I have a small app i wrote in VB.NET which takes in a file name, and a bunch of other params, runs the file with the params, and then exits. At the end of the program, it can optionally echo back all the params it received in a msgbox. When the app is run from a command-line, it works beautifully. The report runs, then when you close it, the msgbox pops up with the params that were passed into my launcher program. HOWever.... we have another application, written in Delphi 4, which attempts to run the same command line as we tried running manually. When it is run from the Delphi app, the msgbox with the params never pops up. The Delphi app is shelling out to my app using the delphi command WinExec(). Is there some weird interaction between Delphi 4 and VB.NET or the .NET framework in general, that would prevent this msgbox from showing up???     - Can't get IIS to run ASP 1.1 Every time I open up a web application in Visual Studio, I get the following error message: Visual Studio .NET has detected that the specified web server is not running ASP.NET version 1.1. You will be unable to run ASP.NET Web applications or services. Not surprisingly, I'm unable to run any of my ASP.NET web applications. Every time I try to open one of my application's web forms in IE or Firefox, the browser wants to open the file with Visual Studio, which I think is symptomatic of the ASP.NET engine not bothering to generate the appropriate web pages dynamically. However, I believe that I do have ASP.NET 1.1 installed -- it's listed (along with ASP.NET 1.0) in my Add/Remove Programs control panel, for example. Now i have tested the assembly (still build with VS2003, framework 1.1) on the framework 2.0 beta. Unfortunatly in some cases, the method "process.WaitForExit()" waits infinite. When the process exits, it does not affect the WaitForExit method. If i replace the WaitForExit method with an interop call to kernel32.dll -> WaitForSingleObject it works perfectly again.     - Inserting/Adding objects to Collections Hello I am trying read from a xml file, pull the values in a object and then add the object to an ArrayList. I am using a 'while' loop to move through each node in the xml file and pulling the required values as needed and setting them to the relevant property within my object. The reading of the xml file works as it should. I get a problem when I try to add the object that I created to the arraylist. It seems to be adding each one, but when I view the results of the list, it shows the last object passed in for each object stored within the Arraylist.     - Too many pending asynchronous disk write causes spurious errors I am using the asynchronous I/O model to receive data over a socket, and asynchronously write the incoming data to a disk file using FileStream. So long as the pending writes have not yet completed I continue to allocate more read buffers. As a result I can get a backlog of about 250 disk writes (1K buffers, because that is the max size the receiver will give me). During the course of a 50 MB transfer I get about 6 of these errors: 07:42:50.14 System.IndexOutOfRangeException: Probable I/O race condition detected while copying memory. The I/O package is not thread safe by default. In multithreaded applications, a stream must be accessed in a thread-safe way, such as a thread-safe wrapper returned by TextReader's or TextWriter's Synchronized methods.     - Disk file write performance Seeking some hints from a real framework asynchronous I/O ru of gu. I am trying to find the absolute fastest way to write binary data to disk files in VB.NET. I am working on an FTP server. In my development testing I have found that I can receive about 60 mbits/sec over the socket data connection using asynchronous reads, with the file writing disabled. When I try to incorporate asynchronous disk writing with FileStream it bogs down to about 4.5 mbits/sec. So I start with only three, but I allocate extra data buffers as needed to keep feeding the socket reads as fast as the system will take them, and obviously not reuse the buffers until the asynchronous disk write completes, and I find my buffer pool grows to about 250 (i.e. up to 250 pending asynchronous disk writes at any one moment).     - Exception on Machine Without Visual Studio .Net Installed I have created a mixed mode (managed + native) application that links to a mixed mode dll. It runs fine on all XP machines with Visual Studio .Net installed, but on other machines with the .Net framework installed but not Visual Studio, it displays a pop-up window entitled "Common Runtime Debugging Services," and the unhelpful message: "Application has generated an exception that could not be handled." This happens when the application gets to the managed-code wrapper of a function (C++) that initializes the dll (__crt_dll_initialize) . The error is triggered just before it enters the crt-initializing wrapper function. It won't display a message-box window placed within the function but before the initialization. Try-catch does not catch the error. Depends.exe show no missing or problematic module. The error also is triggered when 0 is assigned to a pointer to a managed class of the dll.     - Custom Class - Different Instances Hello, I have a custom component class that I created that will basically save x amount of "objects." Once x + 1 object pops in, the oldest one falls off. It works great as I have it. In my test web page I create a Static object and use the New to create a new instance of it. If I don't use the Static, nothing is remembered. The only problem is, when I start a second page, I expect it to have a NEW instance of the class but the numbers stored show up the same. How do I get it to always create a New instance. Am I missing the public, private, protected, internal - modifiers in the wrong position? I assumed the New is necessary so it can create a New instance of it. If it take out the Static modifier, nothing works and no random numbers are stored. If I leave it in, it will remember the number (5) I have told it. But so will each new web page I bring up and point to that page. Do some work with it in a try-finally block, and in the finally block I dispose resources. I would like to in my finally block detect if we are leaving because of the code actually just leaving the block (normally or through a return statement) or an exception occurred. If we are leaving normally I want to commit the transaction, and if we are leaving because an exception is thrown, I want to abort the transaction.     - GC problem Hi, I am setting System.Threading.Thread.CurrentPrincipal to a Windows pricipal before I go ahead call methods to process, sometimes cross assembly. The problem I am facing is that intermittently the WindowsPrincipal object within seems to be garbage collected because I get "Handle is invalid" sometimes.I tried setting GC.KeepAlive (System.Threading.Thread.CurrentPrincipal) post setting the value in CurrentPrincipal variable.     - dotnetfx deployment program. Hi, I have an Install project which a service. I am using the setup.exe which checks for the presence of the framework and deploys it if it is missing so the install Project is set to . My install package has been working quite happily for some months on the Development machine. However it has now started giving the error message: 'MyService install Setup has failed. If the problem persists, please contact Product Support.' The msi package is OK because if I execute it directly it performs the installation OK. Looking inside setup.exe and dotnetfx.exe with a text editor shows that the message is present in dotnetfx.exe only. So I ran up another install which installs an application using the same setup.exe and dotnetfx.exe This went OK i.e. The setup stepped through to calling the msi file. So the only difference I can see is that the first project is installing a service while the second is installing an application. I restate that this was all working and has suddenly stopped.     - Port .Net 1.0 application to Windows Server 2003 Hi, We have a complex application (C#, EnterpriseServices (COM+), MSMQ, etc). Application was developed with .Net Framework 1.0 and running on Windows 2000 with SP3. We need to port it to Windows 2003. By default, Windows 2003 has .Net Framework 1.1 installed. Initiall we were planning an application upgrade to 1.1. But later decided to try to install .Net Framework 1.0 on Windows 2003 server and try to port it the way it is now. Is it doable? I don't see why not. I was reading different sources and I didn't find any reasonings why not. Can you let me know, please. Second issue for the same problem: an applicaiton server, that is going to be running a COM+ components is like I said Windows 2003. I installed a component on it, extracted a proxy and installed that proxy to the test machine from which I tried to run a strip-down version of the same application (only test machine issies calls to the database thru COM= component.). I receive the following error message: The activation for CLSID {070CE8EA-70F6-4E7C-8E73-A902507E811F} failed because remote activations for COM+ are disabled. To enable this functionality use the Configure Your Server wizard and select the Web Application Server role. The application is desctop, no web interface. Why does it need to be configured for the Web Application Server role? Is it a Windows 2003 issue? We prepared the server just as we did before with Windows 2000. Any input is welcome. I'm trying to install .NET Fw 2.0 as a prereq to Visual Web Developer 2005,
and I just can't get it to go, I keep getting this message in the
FailInfo.txt log, and I can't find any online answers:
Error 25015.Failed to install assembly

Any suggestions?
