 - Is IDictionary serializable ? Hi there, in an Asp.net application, a class GfProjects I used in a Profile implements IDictionary. The class is marked as [Serializable] and the profiles appear to be saved and read succesfully. However, I've build an Asp.Net web service which gets this profile field, and when I test it on IE, I get the following message: "Cannot serialise member XXX.GfProjects of type System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary`2[[System.String, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089],[Gilif.Auth.GilifProject, Gilif.Auth, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=4df35566e5ba3853]], since it is implementing IDictionary."  - Excel with Ado.Net and OLEDB problem - Hello, I am trying to create a simple excel (xls) table , when creating the table I get a ' (single quote) prefix before each value , how can I get rid of this single quote it is messing up my numbers with format errors !!!  - FtpWebRequest, SSL, MVS, and command [OPTS utf8 on] Hello, I am tryin gto use FtpWebRequest to connect to a MVS FTP server using SSL. According to the trace logs, the authentication goes OK, but when the server doesn't recognize the command [OPTS utf8 on] I get a 501 error response and an exception instead of the results from my ListDirectory command. Does anyone know if FtpWebRequest can be used with a MVS server? I found some messages from people having problems, but no solutions or workarounds (negative evidence).  - IL Code similar among VS languages? Is there a huge difference in the intermidiate language code produced by VS among the different languages supported?  - Bug in System.Windows.Forms.ToolStrip.ProcessCmdKey Greetings, There is a bug in the method System.Windows.Forms.ToolStrip.ProcessCmdKey which can cause application-wide shortcuts to stop working. For instance, we have an application where there is a global shortcut ctrl + k to open a form. Whenever the toolstrip is active, however, pressing ctrl + k will instead behave as if you pressed ctrl + tab. The problem is the following line from System.Windows.Forms.ToolStrip.ProcessCmdKey (here reconstructed using the .NET Reflector): if ((!this.IsDropDown && ((keyData & (Keys.Control | Keys.Tab)) == (Keys.Control | Keys.Tab))) && (!this.TabStop && this.HasKeyboardInput)) In particular, the following part which is supposed to determine if ctrl + tab was pressed: (keyData & (Keys.Control | Keys.Tab)) == (Keys.Control | Keys.Tab)) But this is clearly a bug, since every keycode for which kc & Keys.Tab == Keys.Tab (i.e. 8) will satisfy the condition, including k as well as several other alphabetic characters. The entire line should instead be: if ((!this.IsDropDown && ((keyData & Keys.Control) == Keys.Control) && ((keyData & Keys.KeyCode) == Keys.Tab) && (!this.TabStop && this.HasKeyboardInput)) Which would fix the bug.  - Microsoft Word 2003 Saving Problem I am having problems with losing information that I am working on. Twice now I have lost a document I was working on because when I go to save it, and error an error message pops up asking if I want to continue and save. If I click no, it takes me to another box where it says: "File Conversion - Rescued Document - Warning saving as a text file will cause all formatting, pictures, & objects to be lost." Then below that it says, "Text Encoding" and I have 3 options: windows default, MS-DOS, other encoding." Further down it says "allow character substitution". So I chose the Windows Default option and that took me back to the original box where I forgot what it asked but I had to choose Yes or No again. So the next time I checked Yes. Well, it closed out of the document and it just disapeared from my computer! When I opened up autosave in word, it said "Word has experienced and error in trying to open the file." Then it gives me some suggestions (check the file permissions for the document or drive, make sure there is sufficient free memory & disk space, & open the file with text recovery converter. I have no idea where the document went! I check the recycle bin but I guess its gone. The document was saved on a USB drive but I cannot find it on there anymore.  - Avoiding new references This is probably going to be an obvious answer for some, but I'm just looking for directions or where to look or read. How can you make an application that references a specific file ... say foo1.2 ... not break when foo1.3 is released. For example, I have an application that uses a commercial available class say V.1.0 that has a function called getColor, then the vendor releases V1.1 that fixes a bug in getColor. How could I write the application so I could just add V1.1 in the apps folder without having to recompile the entire application?  - ASP.Net Hosting I have hosted my site designed by Dreamweaver for quite some time. The first page was named indexhtml. I recently re-designed my site using Asp.net where the first page is Default.aspx. Now my site cannot be accessed from the internet. I made sure the new files are copied in the website, on the IIS, Default.aspx has been added to the accepted documents. Also Asp,net service is running on the sever. Is there anything I am missing for it to accept an Asp.net website? Should I rename it to index.html?  - WCF Error Hello, I have a simple WCF client/service solution and I'm trying to call an operation in the service from the client. However, I get the following error back: System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException: The socket connection was aborted. This coule be caused by an error processing your message or a receive timeout being exceeded by the remote host, or an underlying network resource issue. ... An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host at ... I'm using NetTcpBinding in both the client and the service and I'm configuring it via code: NetTcpBinding b = new NetTcpBinding(SecurityMode.None); b.Security.Mode = SecurityMode.None; b.Security.Transport.ClientCredentialType = TcpClienCredentialType.None; b.Security.Message.ClientCredentialType = MessageCredentialType.None; As you can see, I'm using SecurityMode.None. I even have those extra redundant security lines that probably don't do anything since I passed in SecurityMode.None when I created the NetTcpBinding object, but hey, I wanted to be sure and I have no idea why I'm getting back this error. I've made sure the Windows firewall is turned off, and I even copied my service over to another machine and made sure the Windows firewall was turned off there as well. I still get the same error.  - Identifying the Publish Version of a ClickOnce app at Runtime Not really sure where to post this but here goes: I would like to be able to put a Publish Version in an AboutBox in my VS 2008 WPF application. I am following this example in the VS2008 help files: ms-help://MS.VSCC.v90/MS.MSDNQTR.v90.en/fxref_system.deployment/html/a848f1ad-bea0-1762-ff71-542adc0cdcc9.htm I am having difficulty adding the following to my source code: Imports System.Deployment.Application I get the following error: Namespace or type specified in the Imports 'System.Deployment.Application' doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found. Make sure the namespace or the type is defined and contains at least one public member. Make sure the imported element name doesn't use any aliases. I'm not sure why I can't list this import.  - Using Structs As Dictionary Keys Good afternoon. I think I've gotten to the bottom of an issue that's been frustrating me this afternoon, but I find the result somewhat astonishing. Can anyone explain to me why this is desirable behavior? I need to look up values based on four integer keys. I've written two- and three-key dictionary wrappers before, but they just gracefully wrap nested Dictionaries, but that seems silly with four keys. So I created a simple struct, wrote a decent hash function (thanks, Jon Skeet!), and started populating data. But I get nothing back. Apparently Dictionary requires that keys be not only equal, but *the same object* to be considered the same! I thought I was working around that by using a struct; they should always be handled purely as values, such that I could freely create a key once when loading data, and again later when retrieving, and the Dictionary would never know the difference. Am I missing something? Is it because the structs are being boxed to become keys? Doh! Need to override Equals. I assumed that structs, being value types, would compare on the basis of fields by default, like an old-school Union construct. I assumed wrongly. Here's hoping this helps someone!  - Serialising/Deserialising subclass to base class I have a class "RtpImage" which inherits from a class called "LogImage". I serialise this class and then deserialise back to a LogImage. However it seems that .NET is remembering its type and calls the RtpImage constructor/finaliser instead of the LogImage constructor/ finaliser. This is causing me problems in the case of the finaliser. I've tried using TypeDescriptor.GetProperties to get PropertyDescriptors and I've tried <t>.GetProperties to get PropertyInfo but I can't figure out how to determine for a given property whether or not the property in question is inherited from an ancestor or not.  - Disappearing Data on Dynamically Loaded WPF Form Hey all - I'm seeing some extremely odd behaviour on dynamically loaded XAML forms that are bound to an XmlDataProvider. This will be slightly difficult for me to explain, so I'll try to give everybody some background of what we're doing and what the problem is. We're creating an application for our client that has to generate forms, on the fly, that revolve around XSD (which they will be updating with additional complexTypes whenever they need). Pretend you have a whole bunch of XSD complexTypes, and the application has to create forms that allow users to create XML fragments that are valid for each XSD complexType. For example, perhaps they have an XSD ComplexType named "Dog" with a few elements (colour, gender, and breed) - our application will be required to generate a form with colour, gender, and breed input controls. This is easily achieved by running an XSLT stylesheet over the XSD and generating a bunch of XAML at run time, which we then load it into the app using a XamlReader. The generated XAML contains 2 XmlDataProviders which the controls bind to: 1 for binding pick lists (some of the controls are comboboxes), and a second that is the user-created XML fragment. The controls are bound to these XmlDataProviders as one would normally bind to an XmlDAtaProvider in XAML; using XPath. I have a single class that's responsbile for loading the styles sheets, creating the XAML on the fly, and keeping track of the generated XAML's namespace (so that I can reference the various elements on the generated XAML fragment if needed). I have everything binding, rendering, and saving beautifully (although the saving is a bit of a hack due to the XmlDataProvider not creating elements/attributes on the fly)... with one extremely frustrating and puzzling exception. Sometimes, after generating, loading, and binding the XAML form, data on that form will disappear if I modify data on other parts of that same form. For example, lets say I have 3 textboxes, "Manufacturer", "Make", and "Model", where "Make" and "Model" are in a stack panel. I provide a value for Manufacturer, all is well. When I provide the value for Make or Model, however, the value for Manufacturer suddenly disappears. All 3 textboxes are bound against an XmlDataProvider and are TwoWay. Note that if I have multiple textboxes at the same level in the XAML (such as all in a grid, and none of them in a child stackpanel), then they all behave fine. It's only when some of the textboxes are "deeper" in the visual/logical tree, such as in a groupbox or stackpanel, when I witness the behaviour. I have no idea why data is just disappearing like this... it makes no sense to me. None of the three xaml elements are dependent upon eachother - the only thing they have in common is the XmlDataProvider (however all 3 have a different XPath). Also, if I take the generated XAML and create a normal Xaml page in VisualStudio, build and deploy, none of this behaviour is ever exhibited - it seems to only happen when the form is generated and loaded on the fly. Has anybody experienced anything like this? Has anybody observed this behaviour? Have I made any sense?  - SqlConnection.BeginTransaction timeout under load I am load testing a client-server application and see intermittent timeouts in the BeginTransaction method. The server is close to I/O bound but SQL Server is generally responding to queries in less than 4 seconds and is using 25% CPU about 25% of the time and probably averaging closer to 18% on a dual-dual-core box. According to my log file, the timeout must happen in less than 16 seconds (20:21:16.890 is time stamp of previously logged trace line at top of method, 20.21.32.000 is time stamp of timeout exception). I know I can bump SqlConnection.ConnectionTimeout up from the default of 15 seconds, but I would like to also understand what can cause a loaded yet healthy server to take so long to set up a transaction on 1 out of 1000 or so attempts. BeginTransaction must be blocking on something but I am not sure what resource it is waiting on, I am not seeing anything on SQL Server's side (tracing using Profiler) related to this timeout -- so the transaction attempt does not seem like it has made it that far.  - GC causing variable run-time ? We have a .Net 1.1 application and witnessing huge variance in performance, and suspect the GC is the culprit. The same operation can take 6mins initially, then 2:30 mins, then 3 mins. The variance is bigger on slower machines. On a 4 core 2.36 workstation the variance is limited and the same operation takes around 1:40. We are running the "workstation concurrent" GC algorithm. When inducing full collections in between runs, we consistently seeing the performance degrading after that, which made us think that by forcing a collection we must be wiping the historic data that the GC maintains, making forget about the previous allocation pattern. We have looked carefully at the app code, and ruled out latency or locking. The operation in question allocates a lot of objects(hundreds of thousands). A big majority of these survive for the duration of the operation and die shortly after that. The problem is that we are not able to correlate this variable run-time with the performance counters. More or less we end up with the same number of Gen 0/1/2 collections, but the total times it takes can vary by 300%. In a typical scenario, we get around 500 gen1/40gen2/1-2 gen2. We have tried to look at %Time spent in GC, but sometimes it shows non-sense numbers like tens of thousands, which makes it impossible to compare the average between different attempts. Has anyone witness this before ? Is there any other efficient way to measure the time spent GC-ing which could either confirm or infirm our assumption ? Is the GC algorithm hardware specific ?  - SendKeys problems Hi, I'm writing a custom clipboard application in VB .NET 2008 similar to Ditto (http://ditto-cp.sourceforge.net/). I have tried targeting .NET Frameworks 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5 with the same results. I have also tried targeting x86 and x64 CPUs. I am developing on Windows Vista SP 1 x64. My problem is that when pasting to IE forms, nothing is pasted! It pastes to all other tested applications as expected. Basically, I set the text to the clipboard and use SendKeys.Send("^V") to send Control-V to foreground window. I am using Interop with user32.dll's SetForegroundWindow (ByVal hwnd As IntPtr) As Long function. When I use SendKeys.Send() and pass the actual text as oppoesed to Control-V, IE accepts the input as received BUT all CR's in text are sent as {ENTER} and Posts the form. This causes undesirable results in the form of a comment with the entire paste building at each CR. I have been testing with a Comment field. ------------------------------------------------- ie, trying to paste "Hello, World" results in two comments; 1st comment: Hello, 2nd comment: Hello, World Suggestions for resolving either of these issues is greatly appreciated.  - Sharing a web service proxy across projects Hi, We have a mult-tiier smart client application (.net 3.0) which uses asmx 2.0 web services to talk to the data access layer. We have multiple projects that need to access that data from the client and we originally would "new up" the adapter (proxy) in each class that made web service calls. We now want to use just one proxy for all projects to use as we are using cookies to get authentication. My question is, is there a simple way to create and share a single proxy across all projects?  - Handling Unhandled Exception in DotNet Hi, i'm loading a third party unmanaged dll in my dot net application. the dll doesn't have a try catch block for any of the functions declarations . When a method in the dll is called by the dot net application, the dll creates a thread and for some reason the thread throws a access violation exception. The third party vendor who provided the DLL isn't ready to fix the bug as its not happening in their C++ application. Now in my dot net application how do i handle this issue. i tried using the AppDomain.UnhandleException event; but its not handling the AV exception and my Application always crashes with the crash info. i don't want the application to crash and it has to run continuously. how do i achieve this. i would appreciate if someone can help me on this.  - Error code 0x80070035 - The network path was not found We recently purchased a pair of new servers and installed Windows Web Server 2008 on them. During the initial setup of the servers I was able to copy data back and forth from the existing 2003 Web Edition server and our 2003 R2 file server. Once I had all the data I needed on one of the 2008 servers I put them both on the DMZ and configured them identically. When it was time to transfer the data (C:\inetpub), or even browse, from one server to the other I was unable to do so. As I said before the servers are identical, the same users and shares on each, both are members of a workgroup called DMZ. The error message: Title Bar â?? Network Error Windows cannot access \\servername Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click diagnose. Details: Error code 0x80070035 The network path was not found. If I click the â??Diagnoseâ?? button it tells me it canâ??t be repaired automatically. This happens in both directions, server1 to server2 and server2 to server1. Going from memory here is what I have tried so far making one change at a time, I think: â?¢ I can ping each server from the other â?¢ I can use â??webemtestâ?? to authenticate and connect from server1 to server2 and server2 to server1 â?¢ The Windows Firewall service has been disabled on both servers â?¢ Disabled UAC, this has been turned back on at this point â?¢ Set both servers to use LM & NTLM â?? use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated â?¢ The workgroup DMZ has been set to be a private network on both servers but changed back to public once and awhile, I think when other Network and Sharing Center features are turned on or off â?¢ Network and Sharing Center - Network discovery, file sharing, and password protected sharing are all turned on, printer sharing is not because I am unable to turn it on. Each time I try it resets itself to off after I click apply (Web edition limitation â?? no print services?). â?¢ File and printer sharing is enabled on the NIC â?¢ Each server has a static IP, these are different of course â?¢ I added records to the host file since DNS isnâ??t an option on Server 2008 Web Edition.  - Relationship between versions of .Net Framework I am developing an application using Visual Studio 2005, Windows XP (or 2003) and C#. I am using facilities of .Net Framework 3.0, but not of 3.5. I am falling foul of some memory leaks in the framework, which Microsoft claim to have fixed in .Net Framework 3.5 SP1. I confess to not really understanding how the various versions of .Net Framework that have been installed on my machines are actually used by the application. So my question is: if the leaks really are fixed in 3.5 SP1, will installing that service pack also fix the same leaks in 3.0?  - Assembly missing in GAC after Publish? Hi, We're using ClickOnce alreaddy more than a year for a given applicaiton, doing more than 50 publishes without any problem. Yesterday we made a minor change to one of our components (let's say with the name MyAssembly), and incremented it's version (AssemblyVersion: from 0.1.7.0 to 0.1.7.1). We did the Publish with ClickOnce, but when the users know want to run the application they get this error: "Unable to install or run the application. The application requires that assembly MyAssembly Version 0.1.7.0 be installed in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) first." This is so weird, especially when knowing we had alreaddy inremented this version number without any problems in the past. Anybody has any idea? Your help will be really appreciated!  - Windows Workflow Foundation State Engine - general questions Okay, I've been cramming my brain the past few nights on the whole concept of using Windows Workflow Foundation in my project. I understand the basics of persistence, tracking, etc and how there's a WF host running the workflows themselves. What I don't completely understand yet is how that process can interact with external sources like another windows or web app in particular with a state engine. Example: I have a situation where I have a state engine business workflow driving process from several environments. I have a windows service and a asp.net app populating data to a database. I have other windows services that pick up data in a specific state and sending it out to downstream systems. There's also a notification piece to this which I send out emails at certain times during some of the states. What I'm not completely grasping yet is the following: --How do these mixed environments talk to the same workflow or are they not supposed to? --Should the workflow state engine run in its own process like a windows service and listen to external events called by the other windows and web apps? --If so, how do I fire events in that service from the asp.net app or the other windows services? --How large can a state engine get? My example coming works with thousands of products in a database. Would I design a way to "expire" the state of the product intentionally to keep only the workflow states necessary running or would it be okay to keep the product in state for the lifetime of the product data? So I guess I'm asking, do I design a state engine just for a specific business process, or do I design the state engine around the lifetime of the data being managed? I'll continue to read more docs, but this has been quite the challenge to find real examples that show this kind of separation. Links, example scenarios, descriptions, etc are welcome.  - Compiling to exe Sorry for the very basic question. Using .NET, can I create .EXE programs which will run on any Windows machine without that machine having to install .NET components first? I want to write applications, compile to .exe, and have them run on Windows machines without requiring those machines to install additional .dll, .net, or other files.  - How to determine the CAS for an assembly at runtime We have a windows form application that is deployed to several remote users. We use a batch file to execute the application. This batch file is in charge of doing an xcopy of any new files sitting on the deployment share (Intranet). The batch file also starts the application. We've noticed since a week ago the application is behaving differently if it is called from the batch file or from the command prompt than if the application is called from windows explorer. The actual error is in loading some objects from our domain model, the objects are not instantiated properly when we run the application using the following line on our batch file start applicationname.exe The same application works without problems (objects are instantiated and do not give null reference errors) when we double click the executable in windows explorer or use the following line in the batch file explorer applicationname.exe Any comments or suggestions for troubleshooting this are more than welcome. Hi,

I got ajax application that is converted to version 3.5. It is working on my
machine well. But when I deployed it to one of our deployment machine, ajax
futures are not functioning and returns 'Sys is not defined javascript error
message. The machine has 3.5 framework, so we should not install ajax tool
separately. I also created very simple ajax web site and it is not working
also. Any help would be very grateful.

Help pleaseeee!!

All I can say is that you should perhaps forget about Ajax Futures and try
.Net 3.5 SP1 which is now the reference.
